Searching For The Light
A Silvaze Fanfic
Chapter 14 - A Confession
"No... Guys, seriously, go on without me." Sonic stated, leaning on his crutches and casually examining the X-Tornado in front of him. The morning air was sharp and cool but bearable with an extra layer or two. The blue one continued, "I'll just slow ya' down."
"Look, Sonic... We started this thing together... That's how we'll finish it." Silver replied.
"I know, but-"
Tails finally spoke up, "You might as well come along. I have to stop by your house to pick something up, anyways. We can at least take you home, can't we? And since when do you slow anything down?"
The speedster submitted, with a grin, and slowly worked his way into the back of the X-Tornado. Tails and Silver made sure everything was accounted for, and soon the engine was started. All three looked back at their home for the past month or so.
"Yeah..." Sonic said, chuckling. "It's a neat little place."
The flight was much like the very first one the three had, only a tad more talkative. In what seemed like no time, Sonic and Silver were waiting while Tails scavenged for what he was looking for inside the blue one's house. Finally, after a long period of silence, our hero sighed. "Sonic..." He said, staring ahead. "I... I'm so sorry..."
The speedster glanced up, "Sorry? For what?"
"For... Well... Everything. None of this would've happened if I weren't such an idiot..."
The Blur started to speak, and then caught himself, taking a few more moments to think about what to say. Eventually, he just came out with his question: "Why do you blame yourself so much, man?"
Our hero sighed again, taking a long time to answer. He knew now would be as good of a time as any. "Because..." He took a moment, careful to not get choked up. "Because you still don't know the full story..."
"Oh, really?"
Silver nodded, and swallowed hard before continuing. His eyes were wide, as if he'd just came to a realization of some sort. "It's... It's all my fault..."
"Huh? What happened?"
There was silence. "Do you honestly think..." The albino one finally said, "That Metal blew up the whole world in a day by himself?"
After an attentive look from Sonic, our hero continued: "In the future, I hold the same position as you, Sonic... But... It's different. In your time, the label of 'hero' gets tossed around here and there, at least amongst those who actually know you. But in my time, it's like a position of office. I'm treated... Well, I was treated like a celebrity. It didn't matter what I did... Just helping an elderly lady across the street made the front page as long as I did it. It's just different in the future, ya' know?" The Blur nodded, and Silver sighed. "Well... Not only that, but I was also treated like the leader of the world. Like a protector. Long story short, I just wasn't ready for that much power."
A few more moments of silence followed. Our hero was desperately searching for a way to back out of the story now, but it was to no avail. He stared off, examining every leaf on every branch on every tree around him before continuing. Through the lump in his throat, he finally managed to reveal the truth. "Her... Her name was Skye."
It is a warm, quiet night in the year 2072. Traffic from the highway can be heard off in the distance, but is easily drowned out via the television. In his living room, Silver sits anxiously on the edge of his couch, as if he's waiting for something to happen. After a few minutes, he lays back, and takes a sip of wine, staring at the sparkling chandelier above him. Finally, a knock is heard at the door, and suddenly all of the tension in his body is released. He smiles, and walks towards the familiar sound to greet his visitor.
The door opens to reveal a slender, baby blue-colored fox. She stands, about the same height as Silver, dressed in a rather tight, black, lace-up top along with a pair of black skinny jeans. Her smile radiates towards Silver, pulling him in, and finally capturing him like a fly in a spider's web. The hedgehog steps aside, inviting her in.
"I... I was starting to think you wouldn't come..." He says, somewhat embarrassed.
"Relax... I know your schedule." She replies, playfully. "I got caught up chained to a bed frame somewhere... You know how it goes. Besides, why would I want to miss out on my favorite client?"
"Woah, woah, woah! Hold up!" Sonic exclaims suddenly, stopping the flashback. "You had a prostitute?!"
"Well... I... Uh... Yes. Technically. It started out that way, at least. I guess since I was such a regular customer, on top of me being this huge celebrity figure, we became..." He hesitates, "Friends."
The blue one stares for a moment, processing everything. "Okay... Go on..."
"Anyways... Like I said, I was seen as a leader of the world. So, naturally, all of the nuclear bomb-type weapons were my responsibility."
In his bedroom, our hero passively stares out his window, slowly unbuttoning his shirt. He is wide-eyed as if he holds a piece of information, and the fate of the world is dependent on whether or not he reveals the said information.
"What's the hurry?" His partner says, "Why don't we have a drink first?" She pours two glasses of champagne with her back to Silver. After a few moments, she sits on the bed and invites him over, handing him his glass. "Is everything okay, Silv? You don't look well..."
He sits back against the headboard, allowing a swig of the drink to enter his mouth. He winces at the taste, but allows that it is only the sudden rush of alcohol. His voice is a tad shaken. "Yeah... Yeah. I'm fine." A long time passes. Neither of the two really know what to say.
"So... You wanna' just start this, then?"
...Silver rolls over, a little later, sweating and breathing heavily. He still retains the same expression as before, although his eyes seem glazed over as they remain fixed on the ceiling. "Skye..." He says, abnormally still out of breath. "I... I wanted to tell you something..." He closes his eyes for a moment after seeing the fox's listening face and attractive smile. "I... I... Just..." His words become slurred and his vision blurred. When he opens his eyes again, all he can see is a light blue haze, almost nothing but an illusion. "Y-You... I just... I wanted you to... I..." His head drops and eyes close again as he slips into unconsciousness. "Hnn..."
The fox crawls on top of the now oblivious hedgehog, and gives him a kiss on the cheek. "I know." She looks over our hero's body again, and her expression softens. She runs her hand through his chest fur, and whispers: "I'm sorry, Silver..."
The albino one swallowed again. "I wanted to tell her that I was starting to have some really strong feelings about her." His eyes began to water, and a tear streamed down his cheek. He took a while to continue, "I would've never guessed she had ties to Metal. She put something in that drink... And I didn't wake up until it was too late. She took everything. Every little piece of information I had on military defense, codes to get to all of those nuclear weapons, basically anything that Metal could use to his advantage... She took it all." Silver stopped again, and sniffed. "And Blaze never knew..."
Sonic could do nothing but stare at our hero. "Wow, Silver... I... I don't know what to say..."
"I know, I know, I know. I'm retarded. I got caught up in the corruption of power and didn't look back until it hurt the ones I loved."
The Blur hesitated, wanting to slightly change the subject. "So... Wait... I thought you loved Blaze-"
Our hero smiles as more tears make their way down his muzzle. "Yeah. But I didn't realize it until I was beat down, bloodied, holding her lifeless body in my arms." He fell into his palms, and sobbed for a moment. "You don't know what you have until it's gone, Sonic... You just don't know..."
The blue one nodded in an understanding way, and Silver continued to weep. However, he stopped this when he heard a door shut, and soon Tails walked over. "Okay... I got what I need-... Oh God, is everything alright?" He said, seeing Silver's red, watery eyes.
Sonic grinned, and winked at the albino hedgehog. "I think we're good. Whatcha' got there?"
The fox gave a skeptic look, but shrugged it off. "You may not remember this... But when we were in the hunt for all of the emeralds a while back? Well, I found-"
"The tracker!"
"Yep." Tails confirmed, holding out the device. "It's a little rusty... And needs a lot of tweaking... But I think I can get it to work again. And if I can, we should be able to find that emerald in no time."
Sonic fist-pumped, "Awesome! So, what are we waiting for? Let's get over to your place and fix this puppy up!"
The fox nodded, climbed back into the X-Tornado, and took one last look at Silver. "You sure you're okay?"
Our hero paused for a moment, and then smiled. "It's a long story."
That'll be all for now! Uh... I'm guessing I'm the only one who saw that coming...XD
