3rd December (21 weeks)

Brittany sat on the sofa, twiddling the small box in between her fingers. She was gonna do it. Propose to Santana that was. She was just waiting for Santana to get home from tutoring someone from school, to get more money. The blonde had just returned from a day at work and gotten changed into something a little nicer (a dark blue, short sleeved button-up shirt, and a pair of white chinos), even taken her hair out of a pony tail into flowing locks.

It was a cliche type of scene. Rose petals, nice fragrance, a dark room with candles and even a dinner for afterwards. But still something didn't feel right. It felt forced. She didn't even put much thought into it, just watched some proposals on YouTube. But it was the right thing to do, that's what Mr Lopez said. After they get engaged, they'll get married and everything will be just fine. Santana just needed to come home so she could pop the question.

Luckily, Santana was just on her way up the stairs. Brittany could hear her and so she stood up and held the box tightly in her right hand. She heard the keys in the lock and then Santana pushed open the door.

"I swear to God, that kid has-" Santana looked around the room with furrowed brows. "What the hell is happening?"

Brittany made a bee line for Santana and then took her hand and brought her to the chair in the middle of the room. "Just sit down please," she said softly, nerves coating her voice completely.

"Brittany, what's going on?" Santana stepped forward and went to grab Brittany's arm, but the blonde turned around to face her.

"Just sit down," Brittany replied softly. The latina nodded and sat down on the chair. "Okay, I don't thinking I've ever been this nervous San," she open her hand slightly so Santana could see the box. Her eyes widened and she knew exactly what was happening.

"Britt, don-"

"No, I-I need to do this Santana. Your Dad gave me this ring. He said it was your grandmother's and that she wanted you to have it," the blonde said, pacing up and down in front of Santana.

"Brittany I-"

Santana was interrupted when Brittany crouched down in between Santana's legs and kissed her passionately. As Brittany went to stand up, Santana stood up with her. The blonde cupped Santana's cheeks, and Santana moved closer to touch body's with her girlfriend, snaked her arm around Brittany's back. Brittany moved her lips slowly against the brunette's. Then, she pulled away and rested her forehead against Santana's, using her index finger to lightly draw circles on her cheek. "I love you," Brittany whispered softly against Santana's plump lips. "You know that, right?"

"Yeah, I know," Santana slipped her hand under Brittany's shirt and tickled the bottom of her back. "And I love you too."

Brittany nodded and then took a deep breath in and out. "Then hear me out," she took a step back and Santana nodded. "I love you with all of my heart. And I know this is nothing compared to other proposals. It's not ideal. Other couple get engaged when they've been together for five years, have a dog and live in some mansion after starting some really successful job," Brittany started. "And here we are in some dingey apartment, barely earning enough money to buy groceries, no dog, and a kid on the way," she continued, getting more nervous by the second.

Santana didn't interrupt what was happening, she just let it carry on.

"This is us, this is who we're meant to be and how we're suppose to grow. And taking this step, this is us growing," Brittany said, now making eye contact with her girlfriend. "I love you Santana, and I can't imagine my life without you."

Santana didn't want this to go on, because she didn't want to have to hurt Brittany. "Brittany, please don't do this because my Dad told you to."

"At first I was going to, but now I'm doing this because I love you and you're the only person I want to be with," Brittany got down on one knee in front of Santana. She opened the box, and Santana stared at the ring in awe. "Santana Lopez, would you do me the honour in, when it is legal in Ohio, becoming my wife?"

Santana buried her head in her hands and breathed out shakily. Brittany could hear her sniffling, and in a crouch position she walked over to Santana. She pressed a lingering kiss to the crown of Santana's head. "Please baby, just give me an answer," then she ran her fingers through the dark hair.

Slowly, the brunette lifted her head out of her hands and looked at Brittany with red, glossy eyes. "I-I can't," she quickly stood up and went to storm off to their room when Brittany grabbed her wrist. "Please Brittany, let me go."

With that, Brittany fell to her knees and let go of Santana's wrist. She watched Santana walk swiftly to their room and then slam the door close. Angrily, she tossed the ring to the side and brought her knees to her chest and rested her chin on top of them. "I f*cked things up," she muttered to herself. "F*ck," she sobbed and kicked the coffee table in front of her.

Before she could do any damage, since she felt anger building up within her, she got up and grabbed her leather jacket. She blew out all the candles and wrote a little note for Santana saying that she was going out. Then she opened the door and left the apartment.

2AM

Brittany sat in a club, ignoring the pounding music around her, and everyone dancing. She managed to use her fake ID to get in and to order one drink. But she'd been there for hours and hadn't taken a sip of the alcohol.

She wanted to propose. But she couldn't convince Santana that she loved her and wanted to marry her. And that's what she had been thinking about all night.

But she could see where Santana was coming from, about her Dad.

Her head snapped up when she felt someone tap her and sit next to her at the bar. "What is a beautiful lady such as yourself doing here alone?" The girl was around the same height as her. Brown hair, brown eyes, tanned skin (but not as tanned as Santana). The girl ordered a drink for herself.

Brittany sat up straight and looked at the girl. "Just thinking," she smiled softly at the girl.

This girl sensed that Brittany was sad. "Lemme guess, parents?"

"Um, no, girlfriend," she let out a sad laugh.

"Tell me about it."

Brittany wasn't surprised that this girl was into girls because of her first comment. "I proposed to her and she said no."

"And how old are you?"

"Eighteen. Her Dad asked me to do it because she's pregnant," the blonde sighed. The other girl raised an eyebrow, she got that a lot. "It's a long story."

"Alrighty then. Well, how about you drink up and we go and have a dance?"

Brittany rolled her eyes. "I have a girlfriend."

"So do I. We can dance platonically."

"I have no idea what that means," Brittany shook her head at the girl, who just smiled at her. She really didn't know what that meant.

"We can dance as friends."

"Friends, right," she scoffed. "I don't even know your name," Brittany actually took a sip of her drink.

"Hayden, that's my name," she stood up and held her hand out to Brittany. Somehow, Brittany felt this was all wrong. "What's yours?"

She wanted to answer, but she felt like it would end badly. "Brittany," she answered anyway.

"Let's dance Brittany," she took the blonde's hand (and Brittany felt a pleasurable feeling in her stomach) and dragged her onto the dance floor. She spun the blonde around and danced exactly to the beat. Brittany made sure that there was a good distance between them as they danced just like, almost, everyone else.

"You're a pretty good dancer Brittany," Hayden said to the blonde over the loud music.

"How would you know, we're just bouncing up at down?"

"Can you dance?" Hayden asked.

"Yeah," Brittany said shyly, shrugging.

"My point exactly."

Brittany was actually enjoying her time with Hayden. She made her laugh and smile, and she felt that they could be really good friends. Hayden bought her a few more drinks, until she felt a little bit tipsy and asked her to stop buying drinks.

"You know, you're beautiful. How could anyone deny you as their wife?" Hayden poked Brittany's chest.

"I-I don't know. I guess I'll have to settle as her girlfriend. I'm not gonna leave her," she took the last sip of drink out of her plastic cup and tossed it over the back of her head. Just then some guy back into Brittany so she bumped into Hayden. "Hello," she said, towering over the girl, chests pressed into each others.

"Hi," Hayden chuckled nervously.

"You're kind of pretty too," Brittany slurred, twirling her finger in Hayden's soft brown hair. She locked eyes with the girl and smiled. Hayden leaned closer to Brittany, flickering her eyes to her pink lips. She lifted her finger and brushed Brittany's lip with the pad of her thumb. And then brushed their lips together.

Brittany wanted to kiss her. She felt the urge to kiss this stranger, and to cheat on her girlfriend. The mother of her child.

But she was tipsy, so it didn't count.

Did it?

She leaned closer and their lips were basically pushed together. But they weren't kissing, no, Brittany had a girlfriend, of course they weren't kissing...

Before she made the wrong decision, she moved away from Hayden. "I'm sorry. I can't," she turned around and barged through the crowd. She began to cry as she pushed open the doors. Hayden followed behind her, calling Brittany's name loudly. When Brittany got outside she pressed her hands against the wall and bend over.

"Brittany, I'm sorry," Brittany heard Hayden say. Just then, Brittany started to puke all over the ground. "Oh God," the other girl pulled Brittany's hair into a pony tail and held her up so she didn't fall over onto the floor. "Where do you live Brittany, I'll take you home," Hayden said when Brittany could throw up no more.

"I can't go home," she wiped her mouth and spit out what was left in her mouth.

Hayden sighed. "Okay, you can crash at my place, my parents are out," she helped Brittany stand up properly and supported her as they walked down the street.

"I f*cked up," Brittany muttered to herself.

Meanwhile...

Santana woke up in the middle of the night and felt that Brittany wasn't sleeping next to her. She recalled the events of that night and sighed, rubbing her eyes with the balls of her wrists. She had thought that Brittany would be sleeping on the sofa, and decided to go and bring her back to bed where she would be more comfortable.

As soon as she stood up, she felt dizzy and hot and grabbed hold of the bedside table. She picked up her phone just in case and slowly made her way to the living room, grabbing hold of whatever she could find.

When she stepped into the living room, Brittany was no where to be found. The candles had been blown out and the lamp had been turned on. The coffee table was slightly out of place (so she quickly moved it back into a straighter position) and she could see that the engagement ring had been tossed across the room. She picked it up and placed it on the kitchen table, next to the note.

gone out for the night.

see you soon

brittany

There was no 'I love you' on the note.

She hated that Brittany had just ran away.

Santana was angry that Brittany would propose to her simply because her Dad asked her to. She wanted there to be some sort of initiative from Brittany. For her to do it because she wanted to and knew she wanted to marry Santana. When she had the maturity to go out and buy Santana a ring. Where it came from the heart.

That night she felt the control of her Dad, and the loss of connection from Brittany. And now Brittany had left, again. Santana had felt that whenever things get tough, Brittany just backs out.

Then Santana started to feel dizzy again. She did the smart thing and decided to call someone. If something happened, then someone would be on the phone and know what was happening. She clicked the first number on her contact list, whoever that was.

She grabbed the sides of the kitchen table.

Santana? It's two in the morning.

She heard the voice. She couldn't answer.

Santana. What's wrong honey?

Then her eyes rolled into the back of her head and she fell onto the floor with a bang.

Santana!

9AM

Brittany stirred in a bed (or a sofa, she didn't know) that was unfamiliar to her, with a sore head. She scrunched her eyes and then opened them slowly, so they adjusted to the light.

"You're awake," across from her was the girl from the night before, and then she remembered everything and groaned. "There's water and pills on the kitchen table for you. You should check your phone, it's been ringing all night."

"Probably Santana wondering where I am," Brittany whipped the blanket off her and was glad she was fully clothed. She swung her legs off the side of the sofa. "Thank you for bringing me here."

"That's no problem."

"Nothing happened last night, did it?" The blonde asked, looking up and locked eyes with Hayden. She was basically drunk last night, she probably forgot the worst part of the night. But she didn't.

"Nope, absolutely nothing, not even a real kiss. Don't worry," Hayden assured her. "We were both just a little bit wasted and craved some sort of love. But you stopped before we could do anything regretful."

Brittany nodded along, holding her head in her hands. She then stood up and walked to where she could see the kitchen table. Before looking at her phone she took the pills and drank the water. The she picked up her phone and unlocked it quickly. There were fifty missed calls and nearly one hundred messages. She looked at the messages.

Santana fainted. She's in hospital.

Where are you?

Get to the hospital now.

Brittany, pick up your f*cking phone.

"Sh*t!" She said loudly and slipped her phone in her pocket. Hayden immediately stood up when she saw Brittany enter the room.

"Wh-whats wrong?"

"Santana's in hospital," Brittany grabbed her shoes and slipped them on her feet. "I need to get to her now," she could feel hot tears pouring down her face. "I need to be there with her."

"Okay, I'll take you to the hospital," Hayden grabbed her car keys. "It'll be quicker than walking."

Brittany tapped her foot on the floor of the car as they got closer to the hospital, and lifted her head off the window when she felt Hayden's gaze on her. "Do you know if she's okay?"

The blonde sighed and shook her head. "I have no idea," she answered. "They haven't said anything about her condition, or Ryan's."

"Ryan?"

"The baby."

"Cute name," Hayden quickly pulled into the hospital car park.

"Thank you," Brittany pushed the door open and smiled at Hayden. "And thanks for your number."

"No problem. Text me to say how she is."

And with that, Brittany took off. She ran as quickly as she possibly could into the hospital and then up one flight of stairs to where Santana's room was. In the waiting room was her Mom, Mr Lopez (both sitting down) and Kurt Hummel (who was standing). She walked straight to Kurt, as she knew he was the one that Santana called the previous night.

"Thank y-"

"Why would you leave her in such a state?" Kurt snapped. Brittany could see that he had been crying. "She was a mess when she woke up."

"She rejected me Kurt."

"You had no intentions of proposing to her. You put no thought into it and there was no meaning."

"I love her, of course there was meaning," Brittany started to cry again.

"You shouldn't of proposed to her just because her Dad asked you to. Stand up to him, or wait a little bit. Just grow up and realise that you're not mature enough to get married," and there was silence in the room. It hurt Brittany because she knew that this wasn't just how Kurt felt about the situation. These were Santana's words. "And button up your shirt," that just made her feel like a child.

She turned around and sat down on a chair no where near Mr Lopez or her Mom. Quietly, she asked. "How is she?"

"She's fine, you can go in an see her if you want," her Mom replied. Immediately, she got up and walked quickly to Santana's room.

But how was she suppose to face Santana, knowing that last night she felt some sort of attraction to another girl, and even had the urge to cheat on her. She needed to know how Santana and Ryan were though. So she pushed the door open slowly and met eyes with Santana. "Hey," she said, closing the door behind her.

Santana was sitting up in her own clothes, drinking a small orange flavoured juice box. She tossed the empty box at Brittany, who reacted quickly and caught it. "Can you toss it in the trash?"

Brittany drop kicked the box straight into the trash can. When it landed, she did victory dance which made Santana laugh softly. "C'mere," Santana smiled at her girlfriend. The blonde walked over to Santana and sat down on the end of the bed.

"How are you feeling?" Brittany asked softly, being really distant with Santana.

"Better than when the doctor was poking and proding my belly," Santana said in a light manner. "But seriously, he just said I had low blood sugar and fed me loads of sweet things."

"Well, you are on lock down for the rest of your life, and I will feed you all the sweet and sugary things you need," the blonde chuckled. "How's Ryan?"

"Fine, Britt, we're both fine," Santana crawled forward and sat in front of Brittany. She leaned closer to Brittany and kissed her softly. "Don't worry," she smiled.

"I'm always gonna worry."

"I know."

They stayed in silence for quite a while, just staring at each other. After a while, Brittany lifted Santana's hands into her lap and intertwined their fingers. "Where did you go last night?"

Brittany's breath hitch. She couldn't, just couldn't, tell Santana that she went to a club last night. She would get suspicious. But the trust they had, it woud be completely broken if Santana ever found out. "I went to my cousin, Brandy's, house and stayed there," she lied.

Santana believed her. "Okay. Next time just sleep on the couch, baby, instead of leaving."

"I'm never f*cking leaving, I'm gonna be there to catch you if you ever faint again," Brittany laughed softly.

But there was something else they weren't acknowledging. "Can we talk about what happened last night?" The blonde asked. Santana nodded. "Did you say something to Kurt about it?" Once again, Santana nodded. "He shouted at me for a little bit."

"I heard."

"But they weren't his words, they were yours," Santana couldn't even bare to look up at her girlfriend. "Hey, look at me baby," Brittany used her index finger to lift Santana's chin. They were locking eyes again. "That really hurt. I-I wouldn't of proposed to you, unless I knew I wanted to marry you. I did put thought into it, and I meant every word I said."

"We're not mature enough to get married Brittany."

"Be honest with me Santana, pinky promise you'll be honest," Santana locked her pinky around Brittany's. "Do you think that we're not mature enough to get married, or even be engaged? Or do you think I'm not mature enough to get married?"

Santana knew the answer. Brittany knew the answer just by looking at Santana's facial expression. "No, I don't think you're mature enough," to say that didn't hurt Brittany would be a lie. "You run away as soon as things get tough. I've been left in that house alone more than once because you've gone running back to your Mom."

Brittany didn't know how to respond. "Okay," she pursed her lips and nodded slowly.

1 week later... (22 weeks)

As you can imagine, the Lopez-Pierce household was tense and awkward. Brittany had only been feeling more guilty about Hayden and had become very distant towards Santana. She was at the sink, washing dishes from that morning. Once again, Santana was tutoring the same kid.

Brittany's phone chimed and she pulled it out of her pocket.

[From Hayden]

haven't heard from you in a few days, hows things with the gf?

[Sent at 5:23PM]

She locked her phone and slipped it back in her pocket. Her and Hayden had been talking on and off, and she felt the need to keep it a complete secret from Santana. That's when she knew she was doing something bad, and slowly but surely losing all the trust that Santana had for her.

Once she was finished washing the dishes, she started to dry them with a cloth. Then Santana pushed open the door and tossed her bag on the floor. "Hey baby," Santana quickly walked over to Brittany and spun her around.

"I just saw your Mom on my way home. She said that your Aunt Sarah and cousin Brandy are coming to Lima in a few days to celebrate an early Christmas because they hadn't been here in three months," Santana was furious. "You lied to me," now she was sad. "You said you stayed at Brandy's house, she doesn't even live in Lima."

"San, I-I can explain."

"Where were you Britt?" Santana asked loudly, tears streaming down her face.

Brittany had to confess.

She knew she was about to lose everything.
