YOU'RE WHAT!

Disclaimer: The Cullen's, the Swans, and most of the characters mentioned in the story that are known from Stephanie Meyer's beloved Twilight Saga, are all hers and hers alone. I neither have nor wish to pass them off as mine. I do appreciate the fact that she did bring them to life and allows us to play with them in our imaginations. The only thing I will claim is the current storyline.

"That is also why we left the listening devices in place at each of your homes because we feel that at this point they are trying to find out how much you do know or were able to tell us before that try to make a move to take you out." Bella quietly, but, solemnly told their charges.

CHAPTER 14: STUMPED

Bella, Rosalie, Alice, Sam and Felix are busy going over all of the reports concerning the investigations that have been happening over the last six weeks since Edward, Emmett and Jasper reported seeing an assassination of seven individuals take place and Bella's team had been assigned to protect the three guys. True a lot has happened since that time and quite a few people have been cleared, but, still quite a few are left to finish up. But, they didn't seem to be any closer to finding the mole, unfortunately.

Sam and Felix, both, kept sneaking glances at the three women from time to time as they were curious as to how things on a personal level were progressing. Were they now truly couples, or, was everyone still dancing around the attraction while the tension amongst them continued to build? It was hard to tell because of the tension that existed due to not knowing who was trustworthy among their own associates.

For a while when the three agents and their charges went out as couples to the clubs that the guys preferred the same strawberry blonde and her companions were still present and on a few occasions when the ladies were separated from the guys she continued trying to make a move on the guys. But, it didn't take too much rejection or interference from the ladies when they would return from the restroom to find the blonde there trying to hang on to the guys to discourage the woman from trying to continue her scheme. But, she did finally give up and stopped approaching the group, although, she and her friends still put in an appearance from time to time.

Bella and her team along with the U. S. Marshall's office were on the job and had tightened up on their watch to keeping the guys safe, especially, after the two incidents to get to the guys. First, the attempt on their lives once the Volturi had been told about witnesses to the assassinations and then the bugs being planted inside the homes of the three guys to really find out all that was known by the witnesses. They were determined that no one would get close enough to their witnesses to make a third attempt since everyone knew what the saying "three times a charm" meant. The Protection team was determined that the 'charm' was going to be on their side and not that of the criminal; they were going to keep their charges safe and sound so they would be able to testify when the trial did finally begin.

It was during that discussion and reviewing of the reports that the sharp, jarring sound of the phone ringing that interrupted any further conversation. Bella got up from her place at the table and answered, then jerked to total attention from what she was being told and caused her to swing her gaze back towards the group that were waiting to hear what was being said that brought about Bella's reaction. Then Bella said, "We're on our way." She slammed down the phone hard enough causing the receiver to crack from the amount of force she had used.

As she turned to walk back to her place at the head of the table to collect her things she uttered, "Damn" and then told the others, "We need to go. It seems that an explosion happened on Emmett's work site." And with the utterance of those words the other four members of the present team jumped to their feet, quickly gathered the files together and tucked them safely back into the appropriate folders and rushed towards the door all as one unit.

It didn't take long before they got to their vehicles and tore the road up heading to the location where Emmett's company was currently working. They had expected to find a scene of chaos, but, were pleasantly surprised to find that the agents that had been assigned to keep Emmett safe were in charge and coordinating with the police department which allowed them to stay more in the background which would keep their cover intact and less likely to be discovered; they acted as part of the crew that was trying to keep some kind of order.

Rosalie quickly began to look around in frantically trying to locate where Emmett was. She finally saw him and made a mad dash over to him, but, as she got closer and realized that she was acting out of character she slowed her pace over the last bit of distance before reaching his side. As she reached him and started to ask what happened and how he was the rest of the team arrived and Bella began with the questions while Rosalie hung back and listened to his answers.

"Emmett, are you okay? Any idea what happened or who could have caused this?" Rosalie began asking before Bella could get the words out of her mouth. The whole team was gathered around waiting to hear his answers that Rosalie was demanding. They needed something that would lead them in the right direction to catch the guilty person or persons.

"Sorry, Bella," he answered looking towards Bella instead of the woman that was hanging on him from the side for dear life, without thinking and never called her, or, any of the others by their positions, he continued, "but, I wasn't here the moment it happened. I just arrived a few seconds after the first explosion. And, from that moment I've been swamped with trying to make sure everyone was all right and getting the police to the sight.

"From the point of their arrival it's been nothing but questions and demands for answers that I really don't have."

Not realizing it, but, Emmett's answers had relieved a lot of the tension that the others had been feeling until then and that he hadn't been aware of until he heard their sigh of relief. All of the covers, although that term could only be loosely applied, were still in place and safe for everyone assigned to the protection detail. So, with that being the case Rosalie took the more active role of a true girlfriend that is concerned about her man as Bella and the others began to behave as close friends that were clearly concerned about what had happened.

Bella, Alice, Sam and Felix took a back seat while keeping a close eye on the people and closely surveying the area constantly as Rosalie acted the concerned girlfriend and the police handled the entire situation.

It wasn't long before Emmett mentioned that he had called Edward and Jasper to let them know what had happened. And, at the moment he happened to mention those two calls then those two arrived in a very worried condition. And they, just like everyone else, wanted answers as to if Emmett, and everyone else, was okay and details as to what had happened and why.

Once again Emmett told both Edward and Jasper the same as he had told the police and then Bella and her team. But, other than that he told them he hadn't received any sort of report as to what had set things into motion. "I have no idea if it was an accident or if it was deliberate.

"If it's an accident I'll have someone's head if I find out that it happened because of carelessness due to an individual. But, if it turns out to be deliberate then we all have an idea as who is behind it. And, if that turns out to be the case then we need to figure out their purpose since they had to know that I wasn't on the site." Emmett stated as he too was quickly surveying the area trying to pick out the reason that might explain what happened, or, trying to pick out a stranger, someone that didn't belong and was acting in a suspicious manner. But, he found nothing out other than a bunch of chaos and realized that it would be hard to tell who didn't belong because of the police running around in all areas.

Bella reached out to take a hold of Edward's arm and Alice followed suit as she observed what Bella was doing. The two women along with their boyfriend walked off in two different directions of each as a show of leaving Emmett and Rosalie alone for a bit. Sam and Felix took the hint and they also headed off in still another direction.

Each of the two couples were using the association of being paired as boyfriend and girlfriend as a cover to be able to have a look around as discreetly as possible to be able to investigate, but, Sam and Felix were just roaming as two friends that was curious about the whole situation and showing it by questioning a few people here and there by doing it in a bit of a friendly questioning. They were using the knowledge they already had available to see if the explosion could in any way be tied into the Volturi somehow.

Sam and Felix quickly disappeared from sight once they were sure that no one was paying any attention to their wandering around. So far no one had told them to remove themselves from any of the areas they had visited. That is what gave them the chance to drop out of sight so they could be able to talk with the agents that were undercover at the construction site. It was from these men they were hoping to get the necessary information of how this could have happened and who might be responsible for it.

"Finally, we can all try to take the time to settle our nerves from this morning's incident. I should have realized that dealing with the police would be a trial of nerves from the amount of time I've had to deal with the FBI and the Marshall's office, not to mention the Attorney General's office what with all of the damn ass questions they were asking. Nothing, but, one question after another and it seemed to always be the same question over and over only asked in a different way and by too many different people. I mean how many ways can you give the same answer before someone is satisfied that you have given all of the details that are known?" Emmett was sitting at the table in Rosalie's home with his arm wrapped tightly around his gal as he complained about the police investigation over the explosion.

It was seven at night and all three couples were grouped in a place that was free from extra ears to be able to make plans of how to move forwards after what had happened at the construction site. Everyone had been disappointed that no one, the police or any of the undercover agents, were able to come up with any information as to who might be responsible. From all of the evidence that had been gathered it looked as if the explosion might be unrelated to the Volturi; that it was due to someone being careless and not paying any attention as to what they were doing.

"I just don't believe what the current evidence is showing. It doesn't make sense. Emmett has been involved in his business for a good number of years and the way he interrogates prospective employees I just can't accept that one of them would be that careless." Bella was musing aloud as the others were giving her words close attention.

The others were voicing the same opinion, but, no leads had been turned up to point the finger to anyone individual or group of people that had been responsible.

"Well, were you able to find out any more about who these guys are and how much they really know? Can they identify the shooters from the alley or just describe action itself?"

A/N: Who caused the explosion? Was it the Volturi or just a careless person that didn't pay any attention to the problem he was about to cause?
