Chapter 14: The Test of Fears
The next day, Tsunade had heard from Sasuke about Mebuki's condition and suggested that Sakura at least take the day off to go visit her mom. After a while, Sakura figured she was losing the battle between seeing her mom and working with her husband. She finally decided to go after Sasuke agreed to meet up with her after work. And since Naruto and Hinata were off, they drove her over to the hospital.
Entering the hospital, Sakura went to the reception desk after looking around. "Excuse me."
"Welcome to Konoha Memorial Hospital, how can I help you?" The receptionist asked.
"Do you know Haruno Mebuki's room number?" Sakura asked.
"I can look it up. Are you a relation?" She asked.
"I'm her daughter." Sakura replied.
"One moment." She turned to the computer and started typing. "Haruno, Haruno, Haruno... Ahh, Haruno Mebuki... She's in Room 452... Go straight down this hall, take a left and it should be the fifth room on the right." She leaned over to show the directions. "If you get lost, I'm sure our intern can show you. She's usually in that hallway sometimes. Her name's Kurosawa Misaki."
"Thank you." She said as the three went down the hall. "Misaki... Why does her name sound so familiar?" She asked.
"Misaki-chan is Kiba-kun's girlfriend." Hinata reminded gently as the blue-haired girl appeared. "Misaki-chan!"
"Hinata-chan? What're you doing here? Is Kiba-kun alright?" The girl, Misaki, started worrying.
"Misaki, Kiba's fine. We're visiting Sakura-chan's mom, Mebuki." Naruto said, patting the frightened girl's shoulder.
"Oh, thank goodness. I just came from her room, actually. It's right here." She led them to the right door that had the room 452 number beside the door. "One thing, she hasn't woken up since she's been here."
"Could you tell me what happened to her or something?" Sakura asked.
Misaki pursed her lips before nodding. "Since- Oh, Haruno-san, time for your visit already?"
"Yes, indeed, Misaki... Oh, Sakura, you came? I thought you had to record today..." Kizashi asked.
"Nope. Milady told me to have a day off. Hinata-chan and Naruto agreed to come with until Sasuke-kun gets off." Sakura explained as the four entered the room, Misaki following behind them. "Misaki, I believe you were going to tell me what's happening?"
"Surely. According to, erm... I believe it was a red-haired woman, Haruno-san was on a stool helping her put away some groceries and lost her balance suddenly and first landed on her hip then her head hit the ground. Since then, she hasn't woken up. The doctor was running a test today, so sometime today you'll get the results." Misaki answered before leaving to go about her duties.
Sakura frowned a little before looking at her mother, smiling softly. "Hey, mama... Heard you took a big tumble. You know you weren't supposed to be on stools..." She scolded softly.
Hinata and Naruto shared a look before Hinata spoke. "We'll go wait for Sasuke-kun to show up..." After giving her friend a hug, the two left the family alone.
Pulling a chair closer to the bed, Sakura gently placed her hand on her mom's. "Hear that, mama? Sasuke-kun's even worried about you... Well, me more so, but, by extension, you." She said as if she were having a conversation.
Kizashi smiled softly. "And don't you dare think of leavin before seeing at least one grandchild from those two." Ignoring the furious blush that rose on his daughter, he smirked at his wife. "Besides, you wanted to keep giving Sasuke grief about the honeymoon and not telling you about how long they'd be staying." Looking up, he saw his son-in-law standing in the doorway. "Ahh, come in, son." He motioned the Uchiha in.
Sasuke immediately went and rested a hand on Sakura's shoulders as a long, black, shoulder-length untamed haired woman walked in.
"How are you today, Haruno-sama?" The woman asked, her very unique red eyes with an additional ring in them showing calmness in them.
"Feeling fine, Dr. Sarutobi. And I'm sure my daughter would love to know, as well as I, what is happening to my wife." Kizashi suggested, motioning to the other two in the room.
"Oh, pardon me. I'm Dr. Kurenai Sarutobi and I'm Haruno-san's doctor. I have the test results. And apparently, she had a stroke caused by her atrial fibrillation. According to what it shows, the atrial fibrillation is minor at the moment, but it can lead to a serious heart condition later on if we leave it be. Therefore, we're going to put her on some medications." Kurenai then flipped the paper on the clipboard over. "That was the good news. The bad news is the blow to her head could have caused dementia, but we can't tell until she wakes up. When she wakes up, we'll be able to tell which kind of dementia she could have.. If any at all."
Sakura figured she couldn't look any paler if she tried at the news as her eyes never left her mom. She hoped her mom only came out of this with just the atrial fibrillation, which she'd only have to take medication to help it. Somehow she found her voice. "I-If she has a kind of... dementia... What could we do?"
Kurenai put the clipboard back on the bed before frowning. "Well, it all depends on which category it is. There is cortical dementias and subcortical dementias. Cortical dementias arise from a disorder affecting the cerebral cortex, the outer layers of the brain that play a critical role in thinking abilities like memory and language while subcortical dementias result from dysfunction in the parts of the brain that are beneath the cortex." She blinked and rubbed her head gently. "Sorry. Went overboard with the terms. So I'll simplify it. Cortical dementias could affect her memory while subcortical dementias affect simple tasks from moving her hands to even blinking."
Kizashi noticed his daughter's paleness before nodding. "So my wife might have something wrong with her mind?"
Kurenai nodded before smiling. "But that doesn't mean she could just have atrial fibrillation and just had a minor concussion, which actually is a lot easier for us to deal with than dementia. All it is right now is a waiting game." She looked to her patient, shook her head sadly and left the room, only to bump into two others. "Minato? Kushina? Well, Sakura and her husband, I assume, are in there. Perhaps you can help them?"
Kushina nodded and rushed to embrace the pinkette she considered a daughter, nearly bowling Sasuke over in the process. "Ahh, Saku-musume! I warned her not to be on that stool, but she's stubborn! Please forgive me for not being more strict with her!" She begged, hugging Sakura so hard, she nearly turned blue.
"U-Uzu-Uzumaki-san... C-Can't breath!" Sakura gasped out before the red head let her go. "It's alright, Uzumaki-san... I know she gets stubborn..."
"Thing is, when we were shopping, she mentioned feeling dizzy, but shrugged it off and helped us." She explained. "It wasn't until we were on the way home when she mentioned feeling tired."
Sasuke gave a look at Minato saying 'You're-so-lucky-you're-not-in-the-hospital-yet', which had him shaking and scooting closer to Kizashi. Calming down, he looked at his own wife concerned before taking his phone outside the room to call his own parents to let them know what's happened. "Yeah, Kaa-san, Haruno-san is not really in a good spot, but the good news is she could only have atrial fibrillation or whatever."
"Oh my! How's Saku-musume taking it?" Mikoto's worried voice asked.
"Not good... She looks almost as pale as a piece of paper after what Dr. Sarutobi told us. So, Kushina and Minato are here, too." Sasuke stated, peeking his head in to check on Sakura, who was actually heading his way, probably to get some air. "I'll kee-" Before he could finish, his wife, somehow knowing who he was talking to, took the phone and started talking, getting him to shake his head in wonder.
"Saku-musume, are you alright? Cause I'm sure Mebuki will come out on top! Just like when she came out on top when she had you!" Mikoto's voice turned comforting upon hearing her daughter-in-law's voice.
"I-I think I will be... Thanks, Uchiha-san... What do you mean that she came out on top when she had me?" Sakura asked, accepting the hug from her husband from behind.
"Well, she wasn't supposed to even get pregnant according to her mother. Cause of the whole weakness thing... But, she had you and actually came out with no complications. But, are you sure you're fine?" Mikoto asked again.
"Mhm. I'm fine now... I really believe Ma will come through." She replied, leaning back against her husband and looking out the window. "I'll be sure to call you with any changes, Uchiha-san."
"You can call me kaa-san, too, Saku-musume... But, alright... Remember to let me know if there's anything I can do or if there's any change. Take care and don't worry too much." Mikoto said before she hung up.
Sakura turned to face Sasuke and tucked his phone back into he front pocket before resting her head on his shoulder. "I have a bad feeling. But, I'll have to hope my mom comes through." She sighed as she hugged herself closer.
Sasuke wrapped his arms around her gently. "Just remember she's your mom. And she's probably gonna wake up and make us all clean our houses, take out the trash and paint the walls blue." He chuckled lightly.
Sakura nodded as the two went back into the room, her sitting down and Sasuke leaning against the wall behind her as she thought she saw her mom's hand move. "Hmm? Did.. I just see my ma's hand move? Or perhaps I didn't have my cappuccino today yet."
Kushina's brow furrowed. "I saw it too, Saku-musume. Maybe she's coming around?" Both women leaned so far in their seats, their respective spouses feared they'd fall and hit their head on the bed. The same hand moved again before the eyelids flickered. "B-Buki?" She questioned softly.
The woman opened her eyes and looked at Kizashi first. "Well, what're we doin here? I thought you were doing the dishes at home, Kiza..." She joked weakly.
"You passed out and hit your head at Kushina's, dear." Kizashi reminded.
"Ahh. That blasted stool. I need to throw the thing out of Kushina's house." Came the reply.
Sakura looked relieved. "Ma! You had us worried! Thank goodness for that!" She hugged her mother. When she didn't hug back, she pulled back. "Ma? Something wrong? If it has to do with staying longer than planned on the honeymoon, I'm sorry... I bet you wanna know the details, huh?" She guessed, ignoring her husband's look of 'don't-you-dare'.
Mebuki blinked and raised an eyebrow. "Umm.. Who are you exactly? Have we met?" She asked, shocking all.
'Who are you exactly?'
Oh. My. God! Mebuki doesn't remember Sakura?! What have I done? *bawls!*
