Disclaimer; I do not own BTR, or the movie this story was based on 'Definitely, Maybe.'
A/N; Sorry for the wait you guys, these past couple of weeks haven't been very smooth. It's kind of a short chapter, but I thought I should cut it where I cut it. I hope y'all like it!
Logan's pause was met with dead silence, which was both alarming and confusing. Liam was never this silent, not even while sleeping, and Logan expected the boy to start shooting questions the moment he mentioned 'Katelyn' cheating on him with his college roommate. Evidently that hadn't happened.
"Wow." Liam whispered, once he realised his father was staring at him. Logan nodded, thinking that 'wow' was a pretty good explanation of what had happened.
"Yeah, wow." He agreed.
"I thought Katelyn was Mom." Liam admitted, his eyes falling to his hands.
"You did?"
"Yeah, she was wearing glasses just like me, and well...I really liked her." Liam bit on his lip, and looked at his father under his lashes "Until she cheated on you."
"Well, the story is not over yet." Logan reminded him "And we both cheated on each other." He added, not wanting Liam to assume he was the only one who got hurt that day.
"Right...but for now Katelyn is out." Liam said, and Logan nodded "Which leaves...Erin, maybe Malese." He narrowed his eyes thoughtfully and looked at his dad "Who else?"
"No one." Logan said with a shrug "I was too busy balancing my hospital duties with looking after Kendall. Thankfully Auntie Katie decided to barge into our lives, which alleviated some of the pressure."
"I bet Auntie Katie kicked Uncle Kendall's butt for being so sad all the time." Liam mused with a huge grin.
"Liam, language." Logan scolded, causing the boy to roll his eyes "Hey, hey didn't I tell you doing that is rude? Keep it up and you'll be in real trouble, young man." Liam looked at him challengingly, before rolling his eyes again "Okay, you asked for it!"
Logan's hands shot out towards Liam's ribs. The eight year old shrieked loudly, and tried to get away, but Logan's reflexes were sharper; he caught him around the waist, yanking him back and placing him on top of his lap, his fingers digging at the boy's sides.
"Daaad!" Liam managed through fits of laughter.
"You gonna behave like a proper lil' gentleman?" Logan questioned, pausing his assault. Liam drew a couple of shaky breaths, before shaking his head no "Nope?" Logan raised an eyebrow, his hands inching towards Liam's tummy.
"Never!"
Logan's advances were stopped by a loud grumbling noise, coming from Liam's stomach. Logan hooked an eyebrow looking at his son.
"Are you hungry?" he got another grumble as an answer, Liam's stomach doing all the talking for him "Okay, buddy; I think it's time to get some food in here." He patted Liam's abdomen playfully "Your mom is not going to be happy, if I starve you."
"Can we go to Taco Bell? Please, dad, pretty please!" Liam pleaded, as Logan took him off his lap and put him on his feet.
"You know how I feel about junk food, Liam." Logan said, standing up as well, and dusting himself off.
"I do, but Dad, please! Mom's on a cleansing diet, again." Liam whined, visibly shuddering "The day before yesterday, we had Brussels sprouts with walnuts for lunch!"
Logan made a grimace as Liam kept ranting about the diet his mother was forcing on him. He shared the boy's hatred for the 'cleansing diet from hell' as he liked to call it, and which his wife loved. Once a year, every year she'd start complaining, out of the blue, about how unhealthy their eating habits were, and then she'd declare, without checking with anyone else first, that they were on a cleansing diet for the rest of the month. Logan then would have to suffer through a couple of hellish weeks, when he was allowed to eat only fruits for a whole day, but he never complained, since it seemed to make his wife happy.
Ex-wife now, the little voice in his mind corrected, and Logan quickly shushed it.
"...and she knows I hate T-J miracle soup!" Liam's cheeks were all flushed, and he'd all but opened a ditch in front of Logan, as he paced up and down, arms crossed over his chest.
"Okay, Taco Bell sounds like a good idea." Liam halted, spinning around to look at him, eyes wide.
"Really?"
"Yeah, sure. Just don't tell mom we soiled your diet." Logan said with a wink. Liam let a loud cry of excitement, before crushing on to Logan, arms tightly wrapping around his father's waist.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Logan chuckled, running his fingers through Liam's hair.
"You're welcome." He said, finally pulling the boy at arm's length. A thunder much louder than the one he'd heard after they'd finished their breakfast, echoed throughout the park "We are taking a cab this time." Logan announced, taking a hold of Liam's hand "C'mon."
They were lucky enough to find an empty cab just two minutes after the rain started. Liam was so excited he wouldn't stop bouncing on his seat, smiling whenever his father caught his eye. Logan himself was busy thinking; earlier that year, before the divorce was a reality he had to live in, they had endured two very long weeks of the cleansing diet. The diet though was an annual thing, not an every six-months thing.
Liam requested for a table from where he could see out, and the minute they sat down he plastered his face against the window, his breath making it foggy. The rain soon picked up and as they waited for their order, Liam watched the downpour, still as much as a rain lover as he was when he was a baby.
"Hey, buddy," Logan started, unable to reign in his curiosity "Liam," he said louder, but still the boy didn't look at him "Earth calling Liam, Liam do you copy?"
"Mhmm?" Liam hummed, his attention split between his father and the rain.
"What was Mom's excuse for the diet this time?" Logan asked casually, playing with the corner of his menu. The plastic was torn, and he started rolling it between his fingers, keeping his hands occupied.
"Oh, she said she put on some weight." Liam replied, with an indifferent shrug. Logan frowned.
"She put on weight? Your Mother?" the surprise was quite evident in his voice, and his eyes widened a little when Liam nodded.
"Yeah she did, but it doesn't really show that much." Logan was about to ask more, but Liam cut him off "Did you ever find out why Erin looked so tired?" Logan blinked, confused for a second, before slowly nodding.
"Ugh, yeah I did." Liam looked at him expectantly "Well our first year as interns was nearing its end, and we had the most important test of our lives ahead of us." Liam tilted his head on the side.
"Dad, are you being a little over-dramatic?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No, I am not. This test could make or break our careers; if you didn't pass then, you couldn't practice medicine."
"Oh." Liam exclaimed, dragging out the 'o'. He crossed his arms over the table, his eyes never leaving his father's "So, she was tired from all the studying?"
"Not quite..."
One arm over his eyes, Logan tried to get some sleep before his pager went off again. The huge tome on top of his chest was pushing his back firmer against the gurney, something that Logan welcomed with relief; the pressure did wonders for his back-ache.
He hadn't been able to get much sleep in the last couple of months. Between the crazy hours Strauss had him work in the hospital, taking care of Kendall, and trying not to succumb into depression himself, he didn't have the time. Thankfully Katie's arrival, almost three weeks after he'd come clean to Katelyn, lifted some of the weight off his shoulders. Kendall was not getting better, and he stubbornly refused to visit a psychiatrist, but Katie was good at taking care of him, while simultaneously lecturing him about his life choices. And while Katie's methods weren't the best, it was definitely better than anything Logan and Katelyn had come up with.
Logan winced when Katelyn's name echoed inside his head, swirling around along with the rest of his jumbled thoughts. He let a breath out slowly, as if he was in pain. And really, that's what it felt like every time he thought of her; like he was in physical pain.
So he tried not to; he put all of his thoughts of her, all of their dreams and memories into a box that he buried in the very back of his mind, under layers and layers of other stuff. But every now and then, something would escape; the scent of her favourite perfume, the sound of her laugh, the shine in her eyes when she laughed. And Logan would open another bottle of whiskey, which he'd grown to appreciate more after his break up, drinking until passing out, in hopes he'd bury all of the pain someday. In hopes he'd forget about her someday. In hopes that it wouldn't hurt, it wouldn't feel like someone had sliced him through the heart someday.
"Why don't you take a picture, it will last longer." He said rather grumpily, refusing to look at the intruder. He heard the shuffling of feet against the floor, and soon enough his legs were pushed to the side, as she climbed on the gurney.
"Did you just quoted the 'Bridge of Terabithia'?" she questioned, her tone amused.
"No, I quoted 'Step Brothers.'" Logan said, finally removing his arm "Kendall made me watch the stupid movie at least a thousand times."
"Never seen it." Erin said with a small shrug, her back resting against the wall behind her.
"Really? We should change that." He said, and she smiled a little, her eyes moving from him to the double doors of the morgue opposite them.
"I thought you were sleeping."
"Nah, just wanted to do some light reading, you caught me during my break." He rubbed a hand over his eyes, and popped on his elbows.
"And how do you feel?" she questioned, her dark brown orbs briefly making contact with his, before returning to the steel doors.
"Like crap." Logan said honestly "But that's nothing new."
"Give it sometime, Loges. It's only been a month; she had been your girlfriend for six years. It will take some time."
"And three weeks." Logan mumbled, and she kinked an eyebrow "One month and three weeks, not that I'm counting." Erin chuckled.
"It will get better, I promise. I hardly even think of Paul anymore." She said, and Logan resisted the urge to tell her that her relationship with Paul was nothing like his with Katelyn.
"You are better off." He said instead "The guy was a douche."
"Nah, he was alright."
"Erin, you were in an open relationship, and he dumped you because you slept with someone else." He said, looking at her pointedly, and Erin turned her gaze to him once more "Douche." Logan said with conviction.
She didn't break the eye contact this time. She looked...different. More tired, more pale and the confidence that used to seep out of her in tones was nowhere to be seen. She reminded him a little bit of Kendall, and it was enough to shake him up. Logan sat up on the gurney, scooting closer to her.
"What's up with you?" he questioned.
"What do you mean?" she asked frowning.
"I mean; what's up with you?" Logan asked again, giving her a look.
"It's nothing-"
"No, don't please." Logan cut her off "Don't lie to me. I've had enough of it from Kendall to last me a life time."
"I just...I-I guess I've been studying a bit too hard." She said, picking up the book from his lap, and cracking it open. Logan looked at her, as she bit her lip and flipped through the pages. He cupped her hand, his fingers squeezing hers, and she looked at him.
"What else?" he prodded. Erin looked unsure, her gaze wavering "Hey, you can tell me, we are friends." She sighed, her head rolling back, eyes falling shut.
"I don't know if it's worth it anymore." she mumbled "All this, the stress, the hours..." she shook her head "I'm on call almost every freaking day, no wait, let me rephrase that; I request to be on call almost every day, in hopes of finally seeing the inside of the operation room-"
"You've been in surgeries." Logan said almost immediately.
"I've been in two surgeries. I have the most hours in the ER, out of all the surgical interns, and I spent all my nights here...and still I've only been in two surgeries."
"Well that's..." But Logan didn't know how to continue. He was surprised he hadn't noticed sooner that Erin wasn't requested to be in the OR more often.
"It's lame, that's what it is." She finished his sentence for him "Meanwhile, Strauss is looking at you as if you hung the moon and the stars. Jordan has Doctor Hastings wrapped around her little finger. Kyle somehow hasn't pissed off Reid, and she allows him into her OR in every damn surgery. And don't get me started on George and Doctor McCoy."
"Okay, first things first; Strauss does not look at me like I hung the moon and the stars!" Logan exclaimed, sounding affronted.
"Oh c'mon! You bicker like an old couple! And you have an exclusive relationship." Erin countered, cracking an eye open to look at him.
"An abusive, exclusive relationship!"
"You love it and you know it." She said in a matter-of-fact voice, and Logan crossed his arms over his chest.
"I know not such a thing." He refused, looking at her from under his nose. Erin raised an eyebrow challengingly, but remained silent "Secondly; what about George and McCoy?"
"Oh god, they are a nightmare." Erin said, hitting her head gently against the wall "George acts like a lovesick puppy. You should hear him when we finally get home; 'Luke said this today...' or 'Luke is such an amazing Doctor..'"
"Luke? They are on first name bases?"
"They have brunch every Sunday, what do you think?" Logan's mouth fell open.
"You mean George has brunch with the huge-ass, scary, abrasive ER attending, also known as Luke McCoy, every Sunday?" Erin nodded, and Logan scoffed in disbelief.
"According to George 'He is a delight'" she said sarcastically.
"I can't believe it."
"Yeah, that makes two of us."
"Well okay, what about Doctor Rodley? He seems to like you." Logan said, looking at her sideways. Erin snorted.
"He likes to look at my ass you mean." She said bitterly.
"What ass?" Logan deadpanned, and her eyes snapped open.
"Hey!" her fist slammed against his shoulder, and Logan tried to pull away from her before she struck again.
"Kidding, I'm only kidding!" he exclaimed, raising both hands in front of him in surrender. Erin huffed loudly.
"You better be. It would be really something, if apart from a terrible surgeon I was also ass-less."
"Hey, hey, wait a minute." Logan scooted close to her once again, his hand taking a hold of hers "You are not a terrible surgeon." He said, pinning in her eyes, and Erin scoffed "You aren't." he insisted.
"Well, I'm not a good one either."
"That is so not true. I bet you already know this book by heart." Logan said, motioning with his head to the tome that was now sitting between them "And I know for a fact that your stitches are better than mine." He said with a small frown, and she chuckled "You said it yourself; you practically live here. You just have a hard time finding someone to give you the chance you deserve."
"I hate doubting myself." It was a whisper, but Logan was sitting too close to her to miss it.
"Then don't." he said, squeezing her hand.
"Could you ask Strauss if I could scrub in his next surgery?"
"B-but he is mine. You can't have him."
"Oh my god, you two are totally a couple." Erin exclaimed, clapping her hands as she started giggling.
"You wouldn't be able to handle him anyway."
"Whatever Logan, I'm not gonna steal your boyfriend, don't worry." She taunted, earning a death glare from him.
"Still though, I don't want you thinking like that." Logan broke the silence that had fallen between them, and Erin tilted her head on the side, looking at him "Like it doesn't worth it. Because it does, and you know it. You are a damn great surg-" His pager went off then, drowning the rest of his sentence "Shit."
"Did you customise your pager sound?" Erin questioned, desperately trying to hold back a giggle. Logan hopped of the gurney, shoving the beeper in his pocket, and grabbing his book.
"I do not have to answer that question." He said, crossing his arms, the book held between his chest and arms.
"Right, you should better go before the boyfriend gets angry."
"He is not- I'm not gonna continue this." Logan decided, shaking his head "I'll go only if you promise you'll stop thinking crap like that." Erin sighed.
"It's not crap Logan..."
"Yes it is. You are too good a Doctor to keep thinking like that. Just stick in there, and your time will come." For a second time his pager echoed throughout the empty corridor. Logan groaned under his breath; Strauss was anything but patient, and Logan knew he was going to pay for his tardiness. But this conversation with Erin was far too important.
"Fine, I'll be a big girl and suck it up." She gave in begrudgingly and he offered her a smile "Now gimme that." She reached for his book, tagging it off his grab "Got nothing better to do, since nobody wants me in their OR."
"Erin." Logan said in a scolding manner, and she rolled her eyes.
"Hey I'm allowed to be bitter about it." Erin defended herself, just as Logan's pager sounded once again "For god's sake, go before he comes looking for you!"
"Yeah, I really should." Logan said, heaving a sigh, dreading to actually come face to face with the attending "I'll see you at lunch."
"Yeah, see ya. Oh and Logan, try not to piss him off, if you don't wanna spend the night at the dog house." Logan flipped her off before taking a turn that lead towards the staircase. He heard her laughing loudly, and a small smile tagged at the corners of his lips.
A/N; So this was kinda crappy, but hey at least we found out what Erin's boyfriend is called...or better say ex-boyfriend. Let me know what you thought of chapter 14! Till the next time, ciao
