I never sang you a lullaby; you never fell asleep in my arms.

But you are mine, even so.

It takes more than shared blood to make a family. Dad's eyes, Mom's hands—these things show on the surface—but shared life is what matters. Ice-cream after the Little League game, raking the leaves in the fall, summer holidays at the beach. Your triumphant smile as I cheered your graduation.

I nurtured you, encouraged you, sheltered and protected you.

So, we do not share hair colour or face shape; those are for the surface.

We share history.

We share love.

A/N: In fic, Esme is often portrayed as having adopted children. I wrote a drabble about being pregnant, so I thought it was important to explore another avenue for becoming a parent. Because, I firmly believe that being a parent transcends genetics.
