After the Council dispersed Dana was ready to leave as well. Instead she ended up staying put by Bonnie and Caroline, until a certain little hunter decided to walk up.
He had grown since she had last seen him. He'd gotten stronger, healthier looking, than before. He no longer looked frail, like one hit would break him. His dark blonde hair was cut short, as it had always been, and his eyes were a startling steel blue, holding more gray than Dana's did.
"Hello Dana." he kept his eyes pinned on her face, his lips set in what appeared to her to be a permanent scowl. She hadn't seen him smile all night.
"Daniel," Dana said coolly, not once letting her own gaze stray from his. She knew the game he was trying to play, because she had played it once before with others.
Daniel's eyes slid over to Bonnie and Caroline, the latter who was staring at him with a quirked brow. He curled his lip at Caroline, then directed his gaze back to Dana, "You haven't changed much."
"Can't say the same for you," Dana returned.
Daniel's face hardened. His jaw clenched, fingers curling in against each other. It amazed her how quickly such a small comment go to Daniel. He was never meant to be a hunter. Growing up he'd had limited control over his emotions, although it appeared he'd improved some since then. Just by a little.
"There a problem here?"
Kol was suddenly standing beside Dana, eyeing Daniel with a curiosity that could kill. Possibly quite literally in his case. He was still looking rather stunning in his tux, but now there was a deadliness dancing in the depths of his dark eyes that hadn't been there before.
"I don't see where it would be any of your business," Daniel said tersely, a sneering at Kol, which was perhaps his first mistake.
Fortunately, before anything too serious could happen, a heavy hand landed on Daniel's shoulder. Not to mention Elijah decided to make a sudden appearance, copying Zach's action of restraining his younger sibling.
"Daniel, not here," Zach murmured to him, keeping his pinned on the two Originals and the other two vampire girls standing by.
"I highly suggest that you and your family take leave Mr. Chasseur. Before things get out of hand here." Elijah's 'suggestion' didn't really sound like much of a suggestion. Instead it sounded more like a threat.
Zach nodded his head, apparently taking Elijah's threat rather seriously. He pulled Daniel away, although Daniel seemed rather unwilling to go, leaving the group of supernaturals behind in a hurry.
"Well that was interesting," Caroline commented, folding her arms over her chest while staring off in the direction the two hunters had gone, "Someone obviously has something stuck up their ass."
Dana nodded her head in agreement, but chose not to say much else. Instead she listened as Caroline and Bonnie bid them goodbye (she didn't miss the look of mistrust they gave Kol and Elijah) before walking off.
"They're up to something," Dana said, shaking her head, "they hate witches and they're sitting here gallivanting around with one?"
"Perhaps they have changed their tactics since you left," Elijah mused.
Dana thought this over, staring the way her brothers had walked off in. A witch? Since when had her family thought to adopt a little witch? Was this some sort of trick? Was the girl a captive, or something to do to throw Dana off?
"If you think about it too much, you'll create problems that aren't there."
Perhaps Elijah was right. The more Dana pondered what they were up to, she more possible theories she conjured up in her mind as to why they were carrying a witch around. So with a troubled expression, she bid Elijah and Kol goodbye, blurring from the house within just a matter of seconds.
She went home. Her gran's happened to be the first safest place for her as of now, and she needed quiet time to think.
When she entered the house she found her grandmother sitting on the couch knitting. Dana nearly smiled at the sight of the elderly woman partaking in such a mundane task. Perhaps when she was younger she probably would have been found sharpening blades or dipping them in vervain, not doing something a stereotypical grandmother would do.
"What are you smirking at?" Stacey nearly snapped at her granddaughter.
Dana tilted her head to the side as she said, "Nothing…Gran…what motive would my parents have to…carry a witch around with them?"
Stacey nearly dropped her knitting needles.
"What?"
"They had a witch with them tonight, Bonnie Bennett confirmed it," Dana explained, moving closer to lower herself onto the loveseat.
Stacey's weathered forehead creased even further as her brows furrowed. She set her needles down, wringing her wrinkled and old hands together."There could be a numerous amount of reasons Dana," Stacey shook her head as she spoke, "But my best guess is that they're either getting a little full of themselves, or desperate."
Dana could fully believe that arrogance was flourishing among the Chasseur's. It had been a growing problem in the first place, but desperation? Among her family? They had never had any need to feel desperate. So why now of all times? Had they encountered something they couldn't handle?
Dana nodded her head and asked, "You don't think it's the Originals do you? That maybe they're the reason they have a witch?"
Stacey laughed then, leaning back into the couch with a wry smile. "Child, your parents know better than anyone they can not kill an Original. They tried years ago with Elijah, but only ended up pissing him off…and you see where that got them."
Yes. It had given them a vampire for a daughter. An angry Original had turned a Chasseur into a vampire out of spite after witnessing her beg on her knees for it.
"Why didn't they tell me about the Originals Gran? And what did they do to Elijah?" The two questions popped from Dana's mouth instantaneously.
Stacey eyed Dana. It was just now dawning on her that Dana must have finally met Elijah. Hanging around Kol Mikaelson, it was bound to happen sooner or later. And Elijah had either refused to tell Dana the story of what her parents did, or Dana simply had not asked.
"The Chasseur clan has always…presumably," Stacey added with an eye roll, "been known for being noble in their actions. They killed supernatural beings with cause, not just because they were supernatural."
Dana nodded along to her grandmother's words. They were the same ones she had read about in old journals she'd found in the library of the house she had once lived in.
"Well, as you may know it's all a lie. Chasseur's are tricky, devious, lying bastards who are bloodthirsty and wish to end all supernatural beings to roam the earth," Stacey explained without a bit of remorse as she described her own family. She watched as Dana quirked an eyebrow at her, but her granddaughter said nothing and waited for Stacey to continue speaking.
"Two and a half years ago…before you were changed, they had heard of vampire activity in New York. There was a certain vampire there who had been fraternizing with a human girl. To capture the vampire they decided to take the human girl captive…"
As Stacey spoke, her words hit home with Dana as she pulled the pieces together. She remembered a time, before she had met Damon, where her parents had forbade the children to go on a hunt with them. Zach had been allowed to tag along, presumably because he was older than the rest of them had been.
They hadn't returned until late that night, and when they did Zach had come back undeniably angry. Dana could remember it as if it were yesterday…
The front door of the house they were staying in flew open. Dana was the first to peek around the corner into the front corridor only to find that Zach had just stepped foot into the household.
The eighteen year old girl stepped forward, her brows furrowed as she asked, "Zach, what's wrong?"
Dana knew something was up. It was in the set of his jaw, the way his normally full lips were pulled into a straight, thin line. His hands were clenched into tight fists, the veins in his neck popping out from the anger he refused to physically release.
"Nothing," he answered shortly, pausing before his sister and placing a palm on her shoulder, "get Val and Daniel to bed before James and Lauren get home…okay?"
It had been the first time Dana had heard Zach use their parents names instead of referring to them as 'Mom' and 'Dad', which made her wonder just how mad Zach really was.
However, Dana heeded Zach's words and retrieved their thirteen year old sister, and Daniel from the living room. Val bounded up the stairs while Dana wrapped an arm around Daniel's thin waist to help him upstairs.
"What's wrong with Zach?" Daniel questioned, his blue-gray eyes flickering over to examine his twin's face.
"I don't know," Dana answered honestly, offering her brother a thin smile that didn't reach her eyes, "I'll find out though."
She hadn't found out.
When she had questioned Zach, he had ranted about them being 'immoral' and 'going against the code'. The words had flown over her head, as she had had no clue what that could have meant at the time.
But as her grandmother told the story, it finally hit her.
Lauren and James had used the human girl as bait to lure Elijah in, knowing that the elder vampire would surely come to rescue her. They mocked him for 'loving' a human girl. Then they killed her.
It was a surprise that Elijah hadn't killed them.
"I have one more question Gran." Dana glanced at her grandmother, her lips set in a firm line, and Stacey could only guess her granddaughter's words. "How is Daniel still alive?"
A/N ~ Updated a lot later than I meant too, but school has been really hectic, and now finals are literally just a few weeks away. If anybody fluent in French feels the need to come take my French class for me though...feel free.
But we learn a little more about what the Chasseur family did to Elijah...but why did Elijah not just kill them? And WHAT is up with Daniel. *ahem*
If there's anything in particular you guys would like to see...just let me know!
Until next time! ;D
