Chapter 14
"Misty, wait!" Shouted Ash, running to catch up with her.
Drew faced Rudy with disgust. "That was plain heartless. You should be ashamed of yourself."
"... Why should you care? It has nothing to do with you."
Drew scowled. "You're right. It has nothing to do with me. But if I were in your position, then I would love her enough to make her own decisions. And not use her in such a selfish way."
With that, Drew ran to catch up to Ash, leaving Rudy in the dust.
Meanwhile, deep in the forest that was nearby Ash's house, and on the way to the Pallet Mall, Misty was holding onto a tree and crying her eyes out.
How could he? He's the one that wanted to... to... oh my god, what am I going to say to Ash? How can I face him now?
"Misty... are you okay?"
Surprised, Misty turned around to see Ash with a full worried expression on his face. But there was something different in his eyes. Something that she had never seen before.
"Ash... what are you doing here?" She fought back the tears. "Shouldn't you be saving people?
Ash looked hurt. "How can I? When something like this happened?"
"Ash... you have a responsibility to keep, don't you? You're the one that said so yourself earlier."
"Mist..."
Misty was on the verge of crying again. "Go, Ash. They need your help."
Ash looked at her with saddened eyes. "What about you?"
Misty smirked. "I'll be just fine. Go save them Pokémon Master."
Ash smirked back. "Yea but, how I supposed to know why they're doing there in the first place, without you? I mean, you're the one they want."
Misty shook her head and semi-smiled. "Just go, Ash. Don't make me get my mallet out again."
Ash raised his hands in defeat. "Okay! Fine, you win. I'm going."
Just like that, Ash ran ahead to save his friends, while looking back at Misty, giving her a big smile.
That dork.
But no matter how much she tried, she couldn't get that smile out of her mind. It stuck with her, giving her a reassuring warm feeling, as if it's telling her that everything will be alright.
She sighed. "If only it was that easy."
Meanwhile at the Pallet Mall, Ash saw Gary and Paul fighting off a group of guys that look like trouble, with their Pokémon.
"What's going on here?!"
Gary turned around. "Oy! Ashy-boy! We need your help here!"
Paul also turned around to face Ash. "About time you got here."
"Nice to see you too, Paul."
"You guys can catch up later, right now, we're in serious trouble!" Yelled Gary.
"Who are they anyway?"
"Who knows? The only thing they said, was that they want the Cerulean Gym Leader." Said Paul.
"Did they say why?"
Gary shook his head. "Nope. But they threatened to destroy the mall, if we don't bring them to her."
"So, you guys are trying to prevent them from destroying the mall, while keeping everybody else locked up in the mall, and away from harm." Ash nodded, putting the pieces of the puzzle together.
Gary sweat-dropped. "What are you? Sherlock Holmes?"
Ash looked at Gary in surprise. "What? No of course not. I'm just trying to make sense of it all."
Gary scowled. "Then stop using your head already! Just do what you do best, Ashy-boy!"
Ash sighed. "Fine. Pikachu, you know what to do."
"Pika!" *Right!*
As Pikachu joined the battle field, the other guys laughed at them.
"Ha! You think a puny Pikachu is going to stop my Tyranitar!?"
"Or my Aggron!?"
"Or even my Alakazam?!"
"And this is why we need your help, Ash!" Yelled Gary.
"As much as I hate to admit it, but I agree with Gary on this one." Said Paul.
Ash gulped and sweat-dropped, then he nervously turned to Gary and Paul.
"Yea about that um... I only have Pikachu with me."
"WHAT!?" Gary and Paul yelled in unison.
"But what happened to your other ones?" Asked Gary.
Ash sweat-dropped again. "Um... well... they are either at the Professor's or at my house."
"YOU IDIOT!" Yelled Paul.
Gary sweat-dropped. "Great. Now what are we going to do?"
The other trouble making guys laughed at them.
"Looks like we win fellas! Tyranitar, Hyper Beam!"
"Aggron, Double Edge!"
"Alakazam, Psychic!"
As the attacks come rushing all at once, all Ash could think was:
WHY DID I LEAVE MY POKÉMON!?
Just a split second before they got obliterated, a bright green dome of light surrounded Ash, Gary and Paul, along with their Pokémon, as the attacks flew by, and Aggron got knocked back.
Gary looked up. "Isn't that...?"
"It's Protect!" Yelled Ash in relief.
As everything calmed down, they see a familiar Pokémon falling to the ground in front of them.
"Pikachu pi!" *Togetic!*
Ash kneed down to pick up the exhausted Pokémon. "She must have sent you." He said smiling at Togetic.
Gary looked at Ash. "Who?"
"Me! That's who!"
Everybody involved in the battle turned towards the forest to see Misty, with a very ticked off and annoyed Gyarados behind her.
The trouble making men pointed their fingers towards her.
"You! You're that *censored* from last time!"
"You humiliated us!"
"Not only that, but you had to call your boyfriends to rescue you!"
Misty sported a question mark on her face. "What on Earth are you blabbering about?! I never did such a thing!"
Ash suddenly remembered something. "Wait a minute! Misty! Aren't those the same guys that attacked you that day, right before we split up?"
Misty looked at Ash a little confused. "What are you...?"
Suddenly, Misty remembered that sad day that she had to split up from Ash and Brock. It was at a park where they ambushed her alone, just right after she ran away from the dense Ash, all those years ago.
Misty sweat-dropped. "Oh, it's you idiots. But I swear you had different Pokémon back then."
"Who are you calling an idiot!? And yes we did, but now we have stronger ones to take you down! Go Tyranitar!"
"You too Aggron!"
"Go Alakazam!"
Before they could lunch their attacks, Misty turned to Gyarados, nodded and turned back to the gang of annoying boys. At the same time, Gyarados shot a very powerful Hydro Pump attack on all three Pokémon, causing them to fall back towards their trainers.
"ASH, NOW!" Yelled Misty.
"PIKACHU, THUNDER!" Yelled Ash, as if in sync with Misty.
"PIKAA CHOO!" *TAKE THAAT!*
A very powerful Thunder Attack hit the wet trainers and Pokémon causing them to yell, and be blasted off into the sky, just like Ash used to do to the annoying Team Rocket.
"You know, you and Red make a great team, Ashy-boy!" Gary teased.
Ash of course, was all red faced. "SHUT UP GARY!"
Gary walked away laughing towards the Mall, while giving the security guards an "all clear" sign.
"If I were you Ash, I'd tell her now before it's too late." Said Paul, tapping Ash on the shoulder.
"Eh? What do you mean by that?"
"You know very well what I mean." With that, Paul walked away towards the now opened mall, with a very worried Dawn running up to him.
That guy. He still annoys the hell out of me, even now.
Then Ash looked towards Misty, to find her putting her Gyarados away. He then noticed that he still had an exhausted Togetic in his hands.
As Ash walked up to Misty, with the passed out Togetic in his arms, he suddenly got butterflies in his stomach. Every step he took towards Misty, the butterflies got worse. Was it because of what Paul and Gary said about him and Misty? Or was it the fact that he knew he had to thank her for saving them. Something he wasn't looking forward to.
"Here Mist, she passed out."
Misty took Togetic from him. "Poor girl, you deserve a good rest."
As Misty wrapped Togetic in a blanket, and placed her in a duffel bag on the ground beside her, Ash knew he had to say something.
"I guess... I'm going to have to thank her for saving us back there, when she wakes up."
Misty scowled. "You should. But you should also thank someone else, Ash."
Ash played dumb. "Yea? Who?"
Misty scowled even more. "Gee, I don't know. Maybe someone who just saved you with her own two Pokémon."
Ash hid his smile perfectly. "Right, well when I see her, I'll thank her."
Misty shook her head. After all this time, she should have known that Ash would still be such a typical guy.
She scoffed. "Fine. But you should let her know before she leaves."
As Misty started to walk away, Ash spoke up.
"I will. But... at the right time, and at the right moment."
Confused, Misty turned back around towards Ash, and pondered about what he meant by that. But, she decided it would be safer not to ask about that, since she doesn't really want to know what's going on inside his head. But instead, she smiled.
"We should go Ash. It's dark, and we better get back to your house."
Ash nodded. "Right. But... what are we going to do about, you know...?"
Misty scowled at him again. "What? The fact that I had to give away my baby?"
Ash was bewildered. "What? No! That's not even remotely what I meant. I meant, what are we going to do about the burned Ruby?"
"Oh... I guess he could stay for the night, and then in the morning we could bring him to the hospital... and leave him there." An evil smirk came across her face.
Ash couldn't help but smile back at her. This is what he missed the most. These little moments with her, when things were a lot simpler, and the only problem they had, was where to go next in their journey, all those years ago. But he now knows all too well, that he could never go back to those times. Those times had come and gone, just like the hope of being Misty's one and only.
"Misty, can I ask you something... private?"
Misty's eyes widened. She knows what Ash is going to ask next. And when he does, how is she going to answer him? What? The fact that she was just plain stupid to trust Rudy enough to have a child with him? To even believe that he loved her? Or the fact that she had to give away her unborn child, because the biological father never wanted to have anything to do with that child? Or the fact that even her own sisters, were ashamed to call her their sister, just because of that stupid mistake? She shook her head. No, no matter what happens from here on out, she won't drag Ash into this.
"Ash... don't, it has nothing to do with you."
Ash shook his own head. "Misty, if you thought that I was going to ask you about what happened before, between you and Rudy, then well... you should be happy to know that I'm not even interested in that."
Misty's eyes went wide. "You're not?"
Ash shook his head. "Nope. But, what I do want to know is that... well... ugh! I can't believe I'm saying this but, well..." His face got red, fast. "Would you mind... to go out on a date with me?"
Misty's eyes went huge, and her mind went crazy fast. After all these years having a huge crush on Ash, even on their time apart, besides the fact that she was with Rudy back then, she never stopped thinking about Ash. She never stopped having dreams about them being together. Hell, even when she battled with trainers in her gym, everyone that she faced, reminded her of Ash. That very same enthusiasm, and sometimes awkward smile, and hotheadedness. But now, after all this time, it's almost like a dream that her childhood crush would be asking her out on a date.
Misty pulled out her mallet. "Well, Ashy-boy, you should have asked me earlier, you dumb-nuts!" She yelled while chasing after Ash.
"WHAT!? WHAT DID I DO NOW?!" He ran away from her while laughing like a child. "Is that a yes though?!"
Misty was all tomato faced. "OF ALL THE TIMES YOU MADE ME WORRY! YOU DENSE PIECE OF KETCHUP!" She still chased after him, with her mallet high in the air.
"I'M NOT DENSE! AND I'M NOT A PIECE OF KETCHUP!" He yelled back still running away from her, unable to control his laughter.
Meanwhile, as the chase went on, Gary, Brock, Suzy, Dawn, Paul, May, and Drew, all looked on, from a safe distance, with sweat drops over their heads, totally confused of what just happened.
"What on Earth did we miss?" Asked May, a little confused.
"I don't know. But, I'm guessing it's a good thing, since he's laughing and running away at the same time." Said Dawn, also confused.
"Yea, but look at Misty... she looks very angry." Said Brock with an awkward smile.
"I don't know. Either she's very angry, or she's blushing about something." Said Gary, also confused.
"I'd say both." Paul said simply.
Everybody else looked over to Paul, shocked that he's even interested in what's happening before him.
"Still, it's about time that Ash got some sense beaten into him." Said Paul nonchalantly, but with a smile.
There were more sweat drops from everybody, as they looked away from Paul and towards the cat and mouse chase going on before them.
"You know, I kinda agree with you Paul." Said Gary.
At that comment, everybody chuckled, like they agreed with Paul and Gary.
"C'mon you guys, let's go, and leave these two lovebirds to do their own thing." Teased Gary.
"C'mon Gary, think about it. I don't even think they are together. Besides, she's with Rudy, isn't she?" Ask Dawn.
May shocked, turned towards Dawn. "How'd you know, Dawn?"
Dawn shook her head. "People talk, May."
"Oh." May looked back at the chase. "But... I think, if things stay the way they are right now... well, who knows, maybe they will be together."
Brock sighed. "Well, it'll be about time."
Gary nodded. "Yea, if only Ashy-boy doesn't screw it up, like he always does."
Brock laughed. "Ash? Not screwing up? That would take one miracle for that to happen."
At that, everybody laughed, and went their own separate ways. But not before agreeing to see each other one more time, at the Pallet Street Festival. No one knows for sure what's going to happen then. But, each and every one of them knows, deep down, that something life changing will happen. Not only to just a couple of people, but to all of them. When that day comes, their lives will never be the same again.
