Chapter 14

The next day was pretty much the same. The only difference was that people actually tried to hide there gossiping. History was as boring as ever, I slept through the entire class, like usual. Math just sucked, so I listened to my ipod all class.

Walking into english was… odd, to say the least. The second I walked in everyone stopped what they were doing to stare at me. As quickly as I could, without looking like I was weirded out, I made my way over to my seat. Slowly, everyone went back to talking. Alice looked like she was going to come over and talk to me, but just as she was about to stand the teacher walked in and called the class to attention. After listening to three more projects, we were done with the class for the day and were given the last 15 minutes to talk. With this, Alice made her way over to me with Jasper, or Jaz as she called him, right behind her.

"Hi, Max." She said in a happy voice that I was starting to think was normal for her. Jaz just gave me polite nod.

"Hey, Alice, Jaz." I said with a little smile. I could really get use to these two. If only I could figure out what the hell their secret was.At calling him Jaz, I saw him grimace a little. While Alice tried to stifle her giggle behind her hand. "Aaww, does Jaz not like me calling him that?" I asked in a little bit of a mocking voice. That made Alice give up trying not to laugh. He shot me a light hearted glare at this. "You know, I'm just going to keep fucking with you till you actually lighten up a little, right?" I asked him with a smile on my lips.

"Yes, I do realize this." He sighed, then tensed as he realized that everyone in the room was looking at him.

"HE SPEAKS!" I said loudly trying to get the attention off of him a little. After few more seconds, the rest of the class went back to their own conversations.

Alice chose this moment to sit down in the seat beside me and ask where I got my tail coat that i almost always wear. Jaz sat down next to her.

"Oh, one of my friends got it for me right before I moved here." I said thinking about Ella and how she had almost everything in my wardrobe.

"Really? You must be really close to them." She said smiling at me.

"Yeah, I am. She is one of my best friends." After I said this, we slipped into a silence for a few minutes.

"So Max, What did you think of the sun the other day?" Jaz said.

I gave him a look of fake shock. "Well, I'll be. To sentences from you in one conversation. It must be my lucky day." I said with a little bit of a laugh. He gave me a little smile while Alice grinned like mad. "I loved it. I actually get in some trouble for leaving earlying and going for a run in the forest."

"Max you shouldn't go into the forest by yourself. It's not safe." Said Alice seriously.

"You are the second person to say that to me. Dont worry about me. I can take care of myself."

"I know you can Max. I just worry about you. You may not know your way around here yet and the forest can be really confusing if you don't know what you are doing." With that the bell rang.

Grabbing my stuff, I go to leave the room. Only to be stopped by Jasper grabbing my arm. I just barely stopped myself from hitting him. "Max just be careful."

"Don't worry, I will be." I said, and then headed to bio.

Entering the room, I see that Edward is back. Walking over i throw my stuff on to the table and flop down on to the stool. Looking up at the board, I see that we are talking about cloning today… Fun. I put my head on the desk and pouted. "I really don't want to be here today." I say to myself only to hear Edward laugh next to me. Looking up, i glare at him. "What?"

He raises his hands in self defence. "Well, in the two weeks that you have been here, I think you've only been to three classes." He says with a smile.

"Oh, shut it you. You sound like Derek." I say sitting back up.

"Well, it is kind of his job, right?"

"Don't remind me." I say pulling out the things that I would need to make it look like I was paying attention to class, even though we all know that I wouldn't be.

"What? Do you and Derek not get along very well?" He asks.

"No thats not it, its just… really complicated." I say looking at him.

"Ok then." He says, getting out what he'll need for class.

"What about you? What is your family like?" I say, trying to find out more about him and the rest of the Cullens.

"Well, there isn't much to say. We're all very different from one another, but also very close at the same time." He says, I'm about to ask another question, but the teacher walks in.

This class has got to be one of the worst that I am being forced to take, I think, looking around at the others in the room. Most of which have no idea what the teacher is talking about. The only ones that I think truly understand are Edward and I. I wonder if Jake's classes are this bad. I should go over there after school today and see him.

Walking through the parking lot after school, I realize that I should call Derek to let him and Total know where i was going to be. I reach into my backpack and look for my phone. Only to hear tires squealing about ten seconds later. Looking up, I see a minivan heading right towards me, out of control. There's no time for me to get out of the way without drawing attention to my self, so I close my eyes and brace myself for what I'm sure will be a pretty painful collision with me stuck between a truck and a minivan. Just as its about to hit, I prepare to full to my knees in order to lessen the damage done. I know I couldn't be killed, but a small part of me wondered if this was different. Maybe I would die from this. I stay where I am, with a small smile on my lips as I think, I'll be with my Flock again soon. But just as it's about to hit, I'm pushed out of the way and on to the ground. Looking up, I see Edward standing in front of me holding the van with one hand while the other is braced up against the truck.

I wanted to scream at the top of lungs. This close! This fucking close to maybe, MAYBE be with my Flock again. And then Mr. Show-off had to come and stop the van from hit-... Wait. I stopped my ranting and thought for a minute. Edward was on the other side of the parking lot; nearly 20 feet away. How the fuck did he get over here so fast. Not to mention, he stopped the van WITH HIS BARE HANDS.This confirms it. The Cullens are not human. He looks down to see me staring at him and lets go of the van jumps over the bad of the truck and disappears into the forest before anyone else can see him. All is silent and then chaos erupts as people run over to make sure that I'm all right. Looking out into the crowd of people, I see the Cullens get in their cars and drive off.

"Max, Are you ok?" Asks one of the kids that I met that first day here, I think his name was Mike. Maybe?

"I'm so sorry." Says the driver of the van, who looks vaguely familiar. I have probably seen him walking around the school before.

"I'm fine," I say trying to stand up, only to get told to sit back down by some random teacher, that I have never seen before, and to wait for the ambulance. "Wait, what?" I say looking at him like he's gone insane.

"Young Lady, you were just almost hit by a car. You must go to the hospital to make sure that you're all right." He says in a voice that is supposed to be comforting and finale.

"Um, no I don't. I'm fine, I don't need an ambulance. All i got out of this is a bump on the head. I'll be fine." I say to him, standing up only to get yelled at again.

"I'm sorry, Miss, but it's school policy. An ambulance has already been called." Just as he says this, the ambulance pulls into the parking lot with its sirens blaring. The stupid teacher must have seen my wince, for he calls the medics over and tells them that I must go to the hospital, because he thinks that I may have severely hurt my head. With this, both I and the driver of the van are taken away in the ambulance, but not before I got my two cents in, let me assure you.

As you may have guessed, hospitals are not one of my favorite places to be. As soon as I walked into the emergency room, I was hit with that God awful disinfectant smell that made up so much of my childhood, if you can call it that. I was then taken into a room to wait for the Doctor.

Not even 2 minutes after I sat down, Derek comes bursting into the room , Demanding to see me.

"Max!" He shouts when he sees me, then dashes over. "Are you alright? I heard that you almost got hit by a car?" He says looking the part of the worried parent, even though we both know that I'm fine.

"Max I am so sorry. I don't know what happened." Says the driver, who is in the bed beside me.

Derek looks over at him and shoots him a glare. "You can say goodbye to your licence." He says before pulling the curtain shut.

"Bark!" Looking down at the floor for the first time, I realize that Total is here as well.

"Ahhh, you do care." I say looking at the two of them. Both of which then shot me a glare that makes my laugh.

"Max. are you really ok?" Derek asks me in a quiet voice.

"I will be once we leave here." I say suppress a shiver. Total barks in agreement.

Just then a doctor in his early 20's wearing a white lab coat, walks up to us. "Dr. Cullen." Derek says looking at the man, that is as perfect as all of his kids. Despite knowing where i was, i felt the old panic of seeing a white coat return immediately upon seeing him. I instantly started to twitch and shake. I was breathing so fast that I was almost hyperventilating. All of this went unnoticed by Dr. Cullen and Derek.

"Well, I heard that we had our resident F.B.I agent's daughter in and just had to check on her myself." Says Dr. Cullen. Hm, I think, more like see how much I remember about what Edward did is more like it. "Well Max, how are you feeling? You look a little pale." He says starting his exam.

Derek, finally seeing the state that I was in, grabbed the doctor by his arm and dragged him away from my bed. "Can you take off the coat?" I heard him whisper to Dr. Cullen.

"Why?" The man whispered back.

In response, Derek gestured back towards me with his head. "She has a really bad reaction to White coats and doctors. Especially doctors in white lab coats."

Staring questioningly at Derek, he turned around to look at me, noticing for the first time how jumpy I was, nodded his head and took off his jacket. He then folded it up and placed it on the counter before walking back towards me with Derek in tow. "So Max, how are you feeling?"

Calming down enough, I was able to answer him. "As I told the medics, I'm fine, I just don't like hospitals." I say looking at him, trying to figure out what the hell him and his family are.

"Well, lets just make sure." He says giving me a smile, reaching for his stethoscope. I shot Derek a look.

"All she did was hit her head. So all you have to do is look for signs of a concussion, right?" He says.

Dr. Cullen looks up at him, and then back at me, as I try to make myself look even more uncomfortable and touchy. "Yes, I suppose you're right. I'll just go and get the paperwork that I need you to sign." He says standing up and leaving the room.

"That was close." I say letting out a sigh. "Good thinking." I say to Derek.

"Close doesn't even begin to cover it. What happened, Max?" Aks Total quietly.

"I don't even know. One second, I was looking for my phone and the next thing I know, here comes this minivan and by then it was too late for me to get out of the way. Look, can we finish this at home. I need to go walk a bit." I say getting off the table.

"Yeah, that's okay." Derek says, knowing at just how jumpy I am. I shot him a quick smile before walking out of the room with Total hot on my heels.

Walking around the hospital, I hear many voices and conversations, but I don't recognize any of them. Then I catch Edwards voice. What the hell is he doing here?I think. Looking down, I put my finger to my lips, telling Total to be as quiet as possible, and then crept towards the corner where the voices are coming from. Peering around the corner, I see that it's Edward, Dr. Cullen and Rosalie.

"What was I supposed to do? Let her die?" Asks Edward.

"That's not what i sai-." Dr. Cullen began to say, only to be cut off by Rosalie.

"Yes." She said.

"That would have been bad and you know it." Edward glares at her.

"What could be worse than exposing us?" Rosalie glared back.

"We are not exposed, no one saw me. And we would have been exposed if she was truly hit by that van."

"Are you sure that no one saw you, Edward?" Asked Dr. Cullen.

Edward hesitated for just a second too long. " She saw you, didn't she?" Ask a very annoyed Rosalie.

"I'm not sure." He answers with. At this point, I know that I'm not going to get any more out of the conversation.

Backing up a good distance, I looked at Total and nodded my head a little. Walking back towards the corner, Total barks just as we get to it. "Total." I say looking down at him so that the Cullens think that I have not seen them yet. Looking up I see them all looking at me with unreadable expression, most likely trying to tell how much of that I heard. Dr. Cullen looks down and sees Total for what is most likely the first time.

"You have a dog." He says in what is the most surprised voice that he could come up with at that moment.

Looking down at Total and back up at the Cullens, "He prefers to be called a canine American."

That gets a smile from the doctor while the other two look as stressed and angry as ever. "It said in your file that you had a service dog. Am I correct in guessing that that's who this is?" He says looking down at Total with a smile on his face.

"Yep, this is Total." I answer him.

"Well, I'm going to go take these papers to Derek so that you can get home." And with that the good doctor walked away. Rosalie just huffed and then left.

"Wow." I say looking after his sister. "She really does not like me at all does she?"

"Rosalie doesn't like anyone."

"So…" I say trying to figure out how to breach the subject carefully before just deciding to say screw it. " What the hell was that?"

"What was what?"

"You know what. How the hell did you get to me so fast? You were on the other side if the parking lot."

"I had an adrenaline rush. They are very common in moments like these." He said as if that was the most logical answer in the world, and maybe it was if you weren't me.

"Yeah, sure you did." I said and then turned around and walked away. I was so ready to go home.
