Mi Amigo
Author's note; Again, it's been so long since the last update. I honestly didn't think I'd ever finish this since I stopped writing altogether. Somehow, though, I started writing again and I really missed writing H50 fanfics. Steve has a special place in my heart which is why I had to finish this fic.
A quick recap; Steve faked his death in order to complete a high-profile mission, separate from the team, and they believed he was really gone. The story followed Danny's grief and attempts of moving on – until Steve came back. Instead of being happy to see him, Danny found himself not being able to forgive Steve and move on. In the previous chapter, Danny finally realized that he was ready to let go of the pain and welcome Steve back to where he belonged – into his life.
Thank you so much for reading, a review would mean a lot.
A few months had passed since Steve came back. At first, Chin and Kono were struggling to move past the whole situation, but it took them just a couple of weeks to get back to normal. They were happy to see Steve – they were back to making jokes, hanging out, surfing together – it was like nothing had happened. The only person who seemed to be struggling was Danny. Steve's absence, the thought of him gone forever completely crushed his spirit and broke something he didn't know how to fix. Steve was back – he was whole – but Danny wasn't. A part of him left with Steve and it seemed as if it wasn't coming back. It wasn't easy on anyone – Chin and Kono were worried about Danny – but it seemed to be especially hard for Steve. Kono would often catch him sitting in his office, with a bottle of beer in his hand, with his gaze set on Danny's empty office. His eyes were always watery and he bit his lips more often than before. It wasn't easy, sitting in an office alone, knowing there was someone who used to be sat beside him with his bickering and complaints – someone who was supposed to be there – but wasn't. Steve could only imagine how Danny had felt back when Steve was gone. Was it the same? It couldn't have been. Steve at least knew that Danny was safe and sound, trying to figure things out. Danny had to live with the thought of never seeing his buddy again. He thought the seat next to him would always remain empty. The difference was – Steve couldn't be there with Danny, and right now – Danny chose not to be with Steve.
You can try to fix a broken vase but will it ever be the same? You can glue it together but what if there's just one piece missing? It will be fixed but not the same.
Danny felt the hot sunrays burning his skin as he was trapped in his car, in the middle of a traffic jam, with the broken air conditioning system. Out of all days in this world, the jam had to be that day.
"I know, I am sorry, but Rachel I cannot teleport myself there when I'm stuck here! In the middle of a damn traffic jam!" he kept yelling into his phone, agitated.
"We came back because of you, Daniel, because of Grace. If you can't keep your promises and be there when she needs you, then we might as well be on another continent!"
"I-will-be-there," he said with his teeth clenched, trying to sound much calmer than he felt like. He threw the phone on the seat next to him, and bit his lower lip, staring into the distance through his open window. The Camaro moved slowly and the only thing stopping him from losing it was Jon Bon Jovi's soothing voice – although one particular song soon irritated him.
Hit the gas there ain't no brakes on the lost highway
Yeah I'm busting loose, I'm letting go
Out on this open road
"Yeah, right," he murmured to himself. The sun was already setting, leaving a beautiful sight in the sky which looked as if it was painted with watercolors. The beauty of it only reminded Danny how it was soon going to set and that meant that he missed Gracie's school play. Just thinking about it made him feel like crying. He promised he'd be there – and he wasn't.
After hours of miserable imprisonment in the car on the concrete path to hell, as Danny called it multiple times, he finally exited the car in front of the school. The stars made the blue sky look like it was sprinkled with powdered sugar. Danny turned his head towards the entrance, and started thinking of explanations – one for Rachel, and one for Grace. How could have he explained himself?
As he was pacing towards the stairs, buttoning his jacket, he saw Kono and Chin, all dressed up and fancy, walking next to Gracie, exiting the school. She was giggling, obviously very happy with her performance and amused by Chin's praise. Danny's lips widened into a smile and then, out of nowhere, Steve appeared behind them, carrying Gracie's backpack on his shoulder. He was handsome, well-dressed, smiling from ear to ear. Steve really did love Grace.
"Danno!" Grace spotted Danny and immediately ran into his arms. Danny hugged her tightly, starting to apologize for not making it to her play. It didn't really matter to Grace – she was just happy to see him. "Uncle Steve said he was so proud of me that he would buy me a cake!" she exclaimed with a wide smile on her face. Danny glanced at Steve who was standing next to Kono, very gallant in his tux, with his hands in pockets.
"You know what, Gracie, uncle Steve is buying us cake right now," said Kono, grinning at Steve. Grace was ecstatic. "Come on, let's wait in the car."
Danny stood up and walked closer to Steve. A few moments passed until a tear rolled down his cheek and he put his arm around Steve, pulling him into a tight hug.
"Thank you, buddy," he whispered, letting tears roll down his face. Steve couldn't speak, he couldn't think – he hugged Danny even tighter and after months of roaming around in sadness – he finally felt like he was home.
