A\N: Yesterdays episode was so intense and emotional. If you haven't see int yet I suggest having lots of Kleenex on hand when you do. So I don't know much about medicine and birth procedures and C-Sections. All the information in this chapter came from information I gathered from websites and the little reading I was able to do in the library before my Mom saw what I was looking at. If anything is incorrect I apologize and please feel free to correct me (nicely please) and I'll change it in this chapter or in an upcoming chapter.

Chapter 14
Gabby awoke to find herself in a first strange and unfamiliar room; then everything came back to her and as she saw the beautiful diamond engagement ring she was wearing she couldn't help but smile.
"Babe," Matt stirred beside her as he turned on his side, "You okay?" He opened one eye and then the other as he examined her face; he didn't know what time it was but he knew it was still dark out.
"Yeah I just-" Gabby stopped as her mind blanked; she didn't know why she had woken up. She wasn't unusually sore and she didn't need to go to the washroom and the twins were sleeping. "I don't know," She laughed softly.
Matt scooted closer to her and reached his hands under the covers and resting them on her abdomen while his lips found hers and he kissed her ever so gently, "Go to sleep beautiful," He whispered.
"We love you Matt," She sighed contently as he continued to caress her abdomen in gentle circle motions. "I love you," She yawned burying her head in his shoulder blade and closing her eyes.
"I love you too. I love the three of you so, so much," He kissed the top of her head before gently moving it back onto the pillow;
"Matt?" She opened her eyes to question the movement.
"I love feeling you next to me baby you know that but its not safe for you or the babies if you sleep on your side."
Gabriela knew he was right but the fact that he remembered and was okay about it made her love grow for him even more. "You are going to be the best father ever. You already are the best father ever."
Matt didn't say anything he didn't know what to say. All he could do was stare at her as she went back to sleep and that night he stayed up just staring into her beautiful eyes for a long time before sleep finally came to him again.
"So, how many people helped you with this?" Gabby wondered as she and Matt sat down for breakfast the next morning.
"Everyone at Firehouse fifty-one, Antonio, Laura and the kids, your mother and a lot of my friends and contacts in construction."
"I knew Shay was hiding something from me; I wasn't expecting it to be this though."
Matt nodded as he took a sip of his orange juice.
"Did everyone know about the ring too?"
"No. Only Antonio and your mother knew I was going to propose to you."
A grin broke out on Gabby's face, "You actually asked; That's so old-fashion. But its really sweet," She leaned forward and kissed him on the lips before pulling away, 'Wait," It suddenly clicked, "Shay doesn't know? Laura?"
"Nope."
Gabby stuffed the rest of the pancake into her mouth and swallowed it as she reached for her cell phone and called Shay.
"Gabby," Shay answered on the first ring, "So, how do you like the house?" She asked her voice filled with excitement.
"I love it. I owe you so much, Matt told me you helped."
"Yeah someone had to make sure he got everything the babies would need." She shrugged. "So when can Kelly and I come over and see the house? We haven't see it for a few weeks."
"Soon. I have other news too. Matt and I are getting married."
"WHAT?" She screamed excitedly into the phone, which caused Gabby to pull the phone from her ear, "WHEN DID HE DO THAT? NOT LAST NIGHT!"
"Geez, Shay you're gonna wake up the whole apartment! Building! " Gabby heard Kelly groan from the background.
"Oh," Gabby heard Shay throw something at him and laugh, "So tell me everything! What does it look like? How did he do it?"
Her back and legs getting tired from standing Gabby sat at the kitchen table before she began explain what had happened, "Well it was really sweet; it was in this jewelry box that Eva made. And the ring is gorgeous I'll send you a picture of it but we have to get together soon so you can see it in person. Actually maybe I'll come with Matt on his next shift."
"Oh yeah that's right your mat leave starts next shift. We're really going to miss you."
"Yeah but its not like I can't come and visit. At least until I can't move anymore."
Shay laughed, "Yeah. Well I'll see you tomorrow all right? I'm sure you have a lot of things to do."
'Thanks Leslie."
"No problem Gab's."
Gabby ended the call and then took a picture of her engagement ring and sent it to Shay with instructions to only tell Severide as she hadn't told everyone yet.
"Want to come with me to Laura's bakery? Antonio has a few days off since they wrapped up the case yesterday so he's probably there helping her out. Then we can go to my Mom's place."
"Sounds good."
As it was almost noon when Gabby and Matt arrived at Laura's bakery it was filled with people shopping and ordering lunch and eating at the tables.
Browsing the items Matt and Gabby took their time looking until most of the customers were gone and Laura was less busy.
"Hey you two," She walked out from behind the counter.
Before saying anything Gabby pulled her into a hug, "Thank you so much Laur. I love the house. Matt told me how much you and Antonio helped."
"Gabby you do so much to help us it was about time we do something for you."
"Well…thanks," She stepped back from the hug and showed Laura her left hand. "I have more news too!"
"You're getting married!" Laura pulled her into another hug, "Gab's that's great! I'm so happy for you.
"Hey! Hey!" Antonio walked into the main part of the store, "All I hear is squealing."
"Matt and I are getting married," Gabby turned to her older brother and showed off her ring, "But I heard you already knew that," She added with a smile.
"Antonio Dawson!" Laura reached out to smack him, "You knew and you didn't tell me?"
At his wife's antics Antonio laughed, "Sorry babe."
"I'll forgive you this time," She kissed him.
"Now…." Laura walked to the front door of the store and put the 'out to lunch' sign up, "We're all going to go have lunch in the back and you can tell me all about how Matt proposed," Laura linked arms with her sister in-law."
"Oh boy" Antonio shook his head, "See what you've done now," He turned to Matt and shook his head, "And when Eva finds out it'll be worse."
"Hey yeah we should have you four over for dinner one night soon," Matt said as he and Antonio followed the girls into the back kitchen.
"Yeah we'd like that," Antonio said after looking towards is wife who simply nodded her head, "What'd your work schedule look like for the next few weeks?"
"I work tomorrow Wednesday and Friday and I'm picking up a extra day shift on Sunday at another house."
"Sounds pretty busy. What about the week after that?"
"I'm hoping to pick up as many shifts as I can. But I think that Saturday night would work for us."
"Yeah," Gabby nodded, "When do you go back to work Antonio?"
"When we get a new case but either way I have Saturday off."
"Great, Saturday it is then."
After spending an hour having lunch and talking with Antonio and Laura Gabby and Matt made their way to her mother's house.
"She's been working nights at the hospital but hopefully she's up by now," Gabby said as the both got out of Matt's truck and walked up the pathway.
Gabby rang the doorbell and it only took a few minutes before her mother answered, "Gabriela," She smiled, "I thought you might be coming today."
"Hope we didn't wake you."
"Oh no I've been up for a few hours. Come on in." She held the door open for her daughter and future son in-law to enter. "Now let me see the ring."
Gabby happily held out her left hand for her mother to see.
"Oh Gabriela it's beautiful. You certainly are one lucky girl."
Gabby looked at Matt and her face lit up, "Yeah I am."
"Actually," Matt wrapped his arm around Gabby, "I'm the lucky one. I don't know what I'd do without your daughter."
Esmeralda smiled, she knew how much Matt loved her daughter and it made her feel good knowing that she had found someone to spend the rest of her life with, "Why don't we talk in the living room. Have you two eaten yet?"
"Yeah we stopped by Laura's bakery and had lunch with her and Antonio," Gabby told her mother, "But I think I might just go and grab a snack if you don't' mind."
"Yes I do mind Gabriela. You need to be resting. Now you both stay here and I'll see what I can come up with."
Knowing better then to argue with her mother Gabby sat down on the couch beside Matt and curled into his side.
"Your mom's right sweetie," He kissed her, "You three need all the rest you can get. I don't want anything to happen to any of you." He caressed her abdomen.
Sighing Gabby realized that her mother and Matt were both right "Okay, I think I'd really like some fruit."
"Coming right up. You want anything Matt?"
"Maybe just some water for both of us."
Nodding Esmeralda walked into the kitchen to get the food. She retuned minutes later carrying some cut up fruit in a platter and three glasses of water. Putting the platter of fruit and two of the glasses on the coffee table in front of Gabby and Matt she settled herself into the chair adjunct from the couch.
"So have you two talked about when you'd like to get married?" She took a sip of he water.
Matt turned to Gabby waiting for her to answer.
"Mom," She seemed slightly annoyed, "I know this is hard for you to understand but we love each other and even if we weren't married we'd still love each other and life together and raise our babies. We'll get married when we're ready."
Esmeralda rubbed a hand over her face and took a deep breath, "You know I'm trying to understand Gabriela."
"I know Mom and I appreciate that."
"Esmeralda, if it makes you feel any better I love your daughter very much and I'd never let anything bad happen to her or to our twins."
"Yes, that makes me feel better Matt. I know that you and Gabriela love each other and that you'll be a great father. Believe me ever since Antonio found out about your and Gabby's relationship he's had nothing but positive things to say. I knew that when Antonio finally liked and respected one of his younger sister's boyfriend's that it had to be a good sign. And it was."
Gabby put a grape into her mouth and rubbed her abdomen, "Owe," She winced.
"Gabby!" Matt's eyes widened with fear, "What's wrong?"
Gabby shook her head, "Nothing serious just one of them keeps kicking my rib cage and the over one won't stop doing flips."
"Oh," Matt sighed with relief, "You scared me I thought it was-" He didn't finish his sentence. Everyone knew what hew as thinking.
Ignoring Matt's previous statement Gabby took his hand and pressed it over the spot where one of the twins was doing flips and kicking her stomach."
"That's strong. No wonder it hurts."
"That's nothing when I think about having to deliever them."
This comment sparked Esmeralda's attention; "Your OBGYN hasn't discussed C-Section with you?" She sounded surprised.
"No Mom she has. I just don't like the idea of having one."
"Gabriela let me be very clear first of all as a nurse who spent many years in the Obstetrics department. Delivering twins naturally is very painful and the amount of stress it can put on your body is not good, Especially given you're high risk. I know and understand why you want to have them naturally but the consequences could be severe."
Gabby felt tears well up in her eyes, "Mom!" She cried, "I didn't get to….I didn't want to hold her after…..and I missed that and I was in so much pain afterwards, the stiches and the risk of infection and just being in that unit."
Esmerelda remembered every moment of what had happened to her daughter and just thinking about it brought tears. She had stayed with her many nights holding her as she cried and trying to help her heal.
"Yes but Gabriela this time it will be different; You'll have not on but two babies after and as much as the pain of going through surgery will hurt the joy of having those babies will be better. I can guarantee you that."
At the thought of holding her babies Gabriela smiled and rubbed her abdomen, "I just want to still be able to have the option to have more children in the future if we want to."
"Well Gabriela that's something you'll have to discuss with your doctor."
"Whatever is the safest option Gabby. I can't stand the thought of loosing you or the babies," Matt caressed her cheek and kissed it.
"Matt," Gabby began slowly, "The last time…. It was a bad C-section. I was in the hospital recovering for two weeks because I got an infection. The doctor's said it was because of the situation but I don't want to risk that happening again. A C-Section is a major surgical procedure."
"Okay but the books say that its safest wen multiples are born via C-section."
"I know that but-"
"Okay sweetie," Matt could see she was getting frustrated, "We don't need to talk about it now."
