14 - Leo

Leo just stood rooted to the spot watching in utter disbelief as he wached Frank Zhang come back from the dead. The problem was that he was still technically dead. The Goddess Selene, mother of all vampires had turned Frank into one of her vampires. They had two options, feed him their blood and watch Frank become a fully fledged vampire or leave him to die. Neither of them were options.

"Leo, There has to be a way, some sort of loop hole around this" Hazel said out of desperation.

"I think that we just blew our only hope" Leo said frustrated as he kicked pebbles along the dirt. "I don't know, maybe we could strike a deal with a god like Hades or Pluto or whoever he is now" Leo suggested. At the sound of the name of the god, thunder boomed over head. "Jeez, sorry for offending you, your majesty" Leo said under his breath. Hazel turned an eye at him and shook her head.

"I suppose that could be an option, but people who have made bargains with him have ended up suffering in the end. There was this tale I heard at Camp about a mother who had just given birth and her child had died. She made an offering to Hades and struck a deal with him. She could have her son back if she slept with him. However after sleeping with him she never got her child back and a week later she found out she was pregnant with his child. This child attracted the attention of several monsters whom one night killed her son in his sleep. Out of desperation, she begged for Hades to sleep with her again hoping to conceive another child of his, hoping he would be perfection like the one before and he refused. So later on that night, she slit her throat and bleed out on a shrine she had made to Hades and when she went to the underworld, she was punished by Hades to wait on him and Persephone for all eternity. Making a deal with Hades is like making a deal with the devil. They always backfire on you" Hazel said gravely.

"What about Hecate?" Leo asked.

"I don't know. I've been getting this really bad feeling about her which is part of the reason I haven't tried contacting her. I know she helped us defeat Clytius and all, but still don't you find it odd that she didn't step in until we delivered him to the brink of death? And besides that, in my mind I keep replaying Clytius's last words before we killed him" Hazel said.

"Hecate will not tell you the truth. She sends acolytes like you to do her bidding and take all the risk. If by some miracle you incapacitate me, only then will she be able to set me on she will claim the glory of the kill. You heard how Bacchus dealt with the Alodai twins in the coliseum. Hecate is worse. She is a Titan who betrayed the Titans. Then she betrayed the Gods. Do you really think she will keep faith with you?"Rung the voice of Clytius in her head.

"Just shut up and go away!" Hazel yelled. Leo turned and looked at her and she said "No, no, not you. I'm talking to the voices in my head. Nothing absurd" Hazel said as Leo rolled his eyes.

"Should I be feeling concerned that your hearing voices in your head?" Leo asked. "I mean I'm insane andI hear them all the time so join the club" Leo said with a grin across his face.

"No, I'm fine Leo. It's just those lines keep repeating themselves over and over in my head as well as some of the stuff that Selene said. I know that they're the enemy, but part of me believes that what they are saying is true. What concerns me the most is why are they telling us this? They work for Gaea. It just doesn't make sense at all" Hazel said puzzled.

"Don't let it get to you" Leo said. "They're just trying to get to your head" Leo said quite unsure of himself. Deep down, Leo didn't know who to trust any more. Well there were his friends and all, but out of all the immortal beings out there, Leo was never sure of which ones were really his allies or his foes, so he always had to stay on guard.

Leo and Hazel spent the next few moments pondering over what to do with Frank. Hazel had tried to feed him some Ambrosia which his body totally rejected and he ended up vomiting it up followed up by him coughing up large amounts of blood. Nothing seemed to be helping Frank.

Each minute that passed only made things worse. Frank was going paler and paler by the minute and his skin was becoming cold as ice and Leo even swore he could hear the slight crackle and sizzle of sunlight on his skin. Leo guessed this was due to his transformation or as Selene had put it, 'his transition'.

"We should really get him back to the ship, Leo. We need to get him back now as I can sense his soul fading each second. Each second we waste is one more moment that Frank has lost as a human" Hazel said. "Here, You take his left arm, I'll take his right. Between us, I'm sure we can support his weight and get him back quickly" Hazel said as she did a silent prayer to any god who was listening.

Leo remembered all the times he had teased Frank in the past. There was the incident with the Chinese handcuffs, Frank turning into a goldfish, asking if he was worth two or three Franks when they found out about the price on their heads and many more things that Leo couldn't name.

Leo turned his head around and said to Frank, "hey big guy, I know you can't hear me now but I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for all the times that I have been mean to you. The truth is, that I have always thought of you as a brother to me. I know you and your strong and of all people, you can fight this. If not for me, do it for Hazel or Annabeth or someone or something. We can't lose you as well" Leo said before stopping his little speech to wipe away a tear.

Hazel turned her head and said to Leo "That's really sweet of you Leo. All along I knew that you didn't really hate him like how you always try to project to others. I know that if the situation were reversed, Frank would defiantly do everything in his power to help you. He is really lucky to have you as a friend" Hazel said.

"Lucky to have me as a friend?" Leo asked with a hint of regret. "I've been nothing but a total dick to him. I've bullied him, I've teased him and made him feel uncomfortable so many times. Hazel, you have no idea how bad I feel about it. I only ever did it to fit in and you know, you guys are the only family I have ever had since, well since you know, Gaea happened. And now that Frank is on his deathbed all the nasty things I have ever done to him, I deeply regret. I just wish there was a way I could take it back and be a true friend. One that he deserves" Leo said. "I don't care who is listening, but please help Frank. He is a good person who doesn't deserve to die, so please someone, anyone please help" Leo muttered.

Leo wasn't too sure if the Gods were listening to him or not with their schizophrenia and split personalities from their Greek and Roman aspects being at war with themselves. Meanwhile he could just imagine her highness the royal dirt face Gaea laughing at another sick and twisted cosmic joke of hers. On the subject of Gaea, Leo could have sworn that she had been silent for quite some time. She's planning something big I swear, Leo thought to himself. I will do whatever it takes to kill that bitch!

Together, Leo and Hazel hoisted frank up carrying him with his arms slung around their shoulders. "It isn't too far from here" Hazel said. "We should be able to make it" Hazel said hopefully.

Lucky no monsters had shown up to attack otherwise Leo would have gave them a taste of his fire balls. (Sorry, no pun intended). As the ship loomed into view Hazel suddenly collapsed reaching for her chest. Hazels face turned from the normal brown to a sickly blue. Whatever was happening couldn't be that good on a mortals air ways. Leo quickly pulled a square of Ambrosia out of his belt and forced it down Hazels throat.

Within minutes, Hazels breathing became steadier and her face began to turn back to its normal color. However, she couldn't stand. "Go without me!" Hazel croaked trying to get as much oxygen as she could into her lungs. "I'll be fine, just get Frank to the ship and get help" Hazel wheezed before gesturing for Leo to hurry up and get Frank back to the ship.

After nearly over exhausting himself, Leo finally dragged Frank aboard the ship and up onto the deck. Everyone onboard started to gather around staring in confusion, some asking what was wrong and others just freaking out. This was really beginning to irritate Leo.

"Someone, anyone help us!" Leo shouted into the surroundings. He never expected anyone to answer but they did. A voice came from behind Leo that said "he's dying but only Percy, Annabeth and Piper will be able to retrieve what I need from the sea side cave that many have died in. You have one hour before he dies. Tick tock, tick tock, better hurry up" rung the voice.
