Chapter 14: The Scepter Of Darkness
It has been five years since the death of Vanilla and Rusty. The year was 1836, and Shadow still watched over Cream, who was now twenty-five years old. Shadow still went and looked for Mephiles. The last rumor sighting was somewhere west in an castle; not the one in Transylvania, but a different one. Shadow headed that way, and found a hut on his way. He knocked on the door, and an elderly lady opened it.
"I have been expecting you, Shadow the Hedgehog. Come inside; I have what you will need to stop the evil one," the old lady said.
She walked back inside, and Shadow followed her in. He looked around and saw bottles of stuff that looked like it belonged to a witch. He sat down on an old chair. The old lady moved about looking for something.
"How do you know my name and that I was going to be here?" Shadow asked.
The old lady turned and looked at him. She was holding a scepter. "This is the Scepter of Darkness. Take this and stab him right in the heart; it will do the rest. Whatever you do, do not break it once it is complete or else he will come back."
She handed the scepter to Shadow, who looked at the witch, if that was what she was. "Why seal him? Why not kill him instead?"
"You are not strong enough to kill him now. The Scepter of Darkness will weaken him throughout the centuries. Once you are strong enough, you will be able to kill him."
Then she pushed him outside. Shadow turned and blinked; he saw that the hut was gone.
Thank you miss, wherever and whoever you are, he thought, and then walked away.
It took Shadow four days to find the castle where Mephiles and the rest of his coven was staying. Shadow looked around and sighed, thinking of his hometown. Once he defeated Mephiles, he would head back to Transylvania. The vampire found an inn to stay at, and walked inside. He came to his room, looking at the Scepter.
What is this? He thought to himself.
The Scepter glowed a little, and he put it on the nightstand near his bed, then rested and fed. The next night, Shadow was walking through the town, and walked up to a man.
"Excuse me, do you know where Mephiles the Dark lives?" He asked.
The man looked at him. "The evil vampire lives at a castle not far from here. It's on that hill."
He pointed to a hill, and Shadow nodded. The vampire was getting hungry, and grinned, then grabbed the man and drank his blood, killing him. When Shadow had his fill, he raced to the castle.
When Shadow reached the castle, he walked in and looked around. Mephiles was nowhere in sight, but Shadow was certain he was here. A few minutes later, he heard a voice.
"You've come back, I see."
Shadow whirled around and saw Mephiles. The evil vampire was smirking, showing his fangs. Shadow hesitated and spoke. "I've come to get rid of you, Mephiles."
Mephiles laughed. "You are too weak to kill me, Shadow."
The black hedgehog smirked and held up the Scepter of Darkness. Mephiles' eyes widened in shock. "Where did you get that?"
"It doesn't matter," Shadow said, and lunged.
Before Mephiles could do anything, Shadow stabbed him in the chest with the Scepter. Mephiles started to scream but was absorbed into the scepter, which fell to the ground. Shadow picked it up and headed back to Transylvania. When he got back he barred the scepter in Mephiles' castle. Shadow walked to the house he was staying and saw Cream there.
"Welcome home, Shadow," she greeted.
"It's good to be back, Cream. How are you doing?"
Cream smiled and hugged Shadow. "I have been good. What about you?"
Shadow walked her in and started to prepare for dinner. "It is finally over with. After dinner want to visit your parents and Sonic."
Cream nodded and waited for dinner to be done. Once they finished eating they went to the graves. Cream's parents ghosts were not there but Sonic was. He turned and saw Cream and Shadow. Cream went to her parent's graves while Shadow went to Sonic.
"Hi, Sonic," Shadow greeted.
Sonic nodded and greeted him back. What's new, Shadow?
"It is finally over with; Mephiles is gone."
That's good; now you can take it easy. Shadow nodded, and smiled. He and Sonic talked for a while, but as they left, Sonic groaned and held his head in pain. He looked at the vampire. I have had a vision, Shadow. In the future, you will be facing him again, Sonic whispered.
"Then when that time comes, I'll end him for good," Shadow said.
He turned on his heel and walked away with Cream as Sonic watched them leave.
