Devil Takes the Hindmost, chapter 14

A/N: I am so, so sorry. Legitimately, I am sorry. I was busy with school, and other stuff! But still, I apologize for lack of a chapter. There's going to be a HUGEEE TIME SKIP, from the last chapter. The last chapter took place in about late October, so this is fast forward to December, just in time for Christmas! (I have a Christmas problem. Sue me.)

BEATRICE'S POV:

"You did WHAT?!"

I widened my eyes as I pressed my finger to my lips, hoping no one was overhearing our current conversation. It was Tuesday, late October. It's been three point four days since my kiss with the school superstar, Tobias Eaton, and no one has figured it out yet. I've kept this secret hidden inside me ever since Caleb picked me up from the party at around two am that night, and I finally told Christina and Lynn today. They were both squealing loudly, covering their mouths. However, when Lynn whipped her IPhone out, it was Christina who managed to pull it out of her grasp and stuff it into her snakeskin purse.

"No point in telling," she said, rolling her eyes as she gathered her hair together, and began braiding it down the side of her head. She had dark circles under her eyes, but there was also something odd about her. Like there was something completely missing from her that we usually see. I had trouble putting my finger on it. Pulling it into a dark hair band, she finished the braid, and leaned forward, her elbows on the table, and her hands clasped together. Resting her hand on her knuckles, she asked "So, what was the kiss like? Was it hot? Or slow and steady? Or did little Beatrice go further then she meant to?" she asks teasingly, her crimson lips split into a smirk. I gasp, covering my mouth with my pale hand. "Christina!" I gasp, scandalized.

"What?" she asks, rolling her eyes. She leans back onto the creaky plastic chair, crossing her leg over the other. Lynn was laughing, having to cover her mouth so the sound of her strange, yet somewhat charming laugh was muffled, "You'll be exposed to it sooner or later, Tris. Better now than later, when your tubes are tied.

"It's Beatrice," I add firmly, my eyebrows narrowing in disgust. I knew better than that, I was sure. I had no experience with intimacy as far as kissing, hugging and pecks to the cheeks. Arms wrapping around my shoulder or my waist was fine, but other than that, I refused. My parents raised me on better principles then that, and besides…it thoroughly intimidated me. The idea of being exposed to another human being solely for kicks made no sense to me. I mean, if you wanted to share something discreet with someone, shouldn't it be for someone you loved? Or cared for deeply? "And no, Christina. No way."

"Well, Tris" Lynn began, turning her chair towards Christina, "You're not the only one who went past the line. Christina here got wasted on Friday."

"No surprise," I snarled, rolling my eyes.

"I mean," Lynn laughed at my disapproval, "Not like that. She found her own prince charming. He's someone we know, for sure. But it's somewhat of a-"

Lynn was stopped quickly, when Christina suddenly shot up, and strode over to her chair in three long strides. She wrapped her leather covered arm around Lynn's neck, loosely, but still deadly.

"You tell her jack and I swear I'll-"

"Tell me what?" I ask curiously, leaning forward. I wrap my grey sweater around my arms more firmly, the wheels in my head spinning. "Tell me what, Christina?"

"Don't you dare-augh!" Christina was cut off by the tightening of the arm around her neck, and Lynn smirked, her brown eyes glimmering with malice. "You-fucking-I-kill-"

"Oh, hush up," Lynn hissed, a mischievous grin on her face. She ignores the looks of terrified ninth graders that pass by, and leans forward so this conversation was nearly private, "Christina and Will finally got together. About time, I may say-"

"No way."

"True. They kissed, and it was Will who dropped her off at my house after the party. He was even blushing a bit; the charming little nerd must have finally said something."

I laugh, putting my hand over my lips. It was destined to become, I may add, but still, the idea of a bully and her victim together was funny. Almost like those cheesy romance books I never really liked. I found a lot of them in Christina's bag, though she hides the fact she enjoys them. I borrowed one from her, "The Fault in Our Stars". It was slow, yet sweet, in a way. I enjoyed the characters in the book, because I could identify with Hazel, the girl. That she felt as though Augustus was her love, but she was still hesitant-

"Tris, you still there?" Lynn waves a hand in my face, and I snap out of it quickly

"Oh, uh, yeah."

"Anyways, when I asked Will where he found her, he replied at your boyfriend's-"

"SHHH!" I hiss, placing a finger over my lips, "No one is supposed to know!"

"Sorry."

"It's fine."

"Anywhom, it seems like he found her wasted, and took care of her for a bit. Wouldn't leave her side until she was fully asleep. That's why I found Shauna screaming at me at four in the morning, something about a little blonde guy holding a totally wasted girl, and I couldn't help but laugh when I saw Will holding Christina in his-"

At this point, Christina managed to free herself from Lynn's grip, and overturned her arm. I flinched a bit, as Christina tugged on Lynn's hair, cursing her with every damned name under the sun. I covered my ears, as Al casually walked over. He had been with Will all lunch hour, presumably talking about their girlfriends

"Hey, Tris." He whispered, as Lynn flipped Christina's arm and held it to her back, "What's going on with you?" He plants a quick, sticky kiss on my cheek, and I can't help but flush as the passionate kiss I shared with Tobias flows into my mind.

"Nothing," I reply rather weakly, feeling like a complete coward. A vixen, and selfish. But brave. "Nothing at all."

TIMES SKIP: DECEMBER 20TH.

TOBIAS' POV

"Merry X-mas. Love you."

I grin at the screen below me, while Mr. Evans blabbers on about civil rights and other crap no one really needed. What I needed, was her. Beatrice, my Tris. I haven't seen her in ages, and we've been sneaking around together for two months, behind Al's back. The fact she was so innocent and sweet already aroused me, but the other fact she was turning her back on that loser for me, made me insane. She was so stern and delicate at the same time. It was erotic to me.

"Love u, too." I reply, moving my hands quickly over the keys.

"When r u havin a x-mas party?"

"Soon."

"Who's invited?"

"U, of course."

"Ur adorable."

"Miss u, babe."

"What do u want for x-mas?"

"U."

"No, serious."

"U."

"Tobias…"

"I don't need anything but U."

That's the last text I receive, before she goes quiet for awhile. I don't panic, as she probably began to worry she'll get caught, and put it away. My Tris, troubling over authority. It was adorable.

Later, I walk out of class, a free man. Today was the last day before Christmas break, and I wanted to share one last kiss with her before Christmas. She was, of course, coming over to my house on Christmas, but this would be our two month kiss. It was special.

I meet her at the side of the school, the white snow spiraling in frozen fractals all around. I pull my jacket up, the collar reaching below my neck. My backpack hangs lazily from my shoulder, as I see her, leaning up against the brick wall. She wears grey earmuffs, and a long dark grey coat. When she turns to me, they only make her blue eyes brighter in all the white. Her blonde hair is frizzy, but was peppered with delicate, crystal snowflakes.

"Hey, babe." I say a smile on my face. Her cheeks were red with the cold, but I placed my bare hand on her left cheek, to warm it up.

"Sorry about the texting," she begins, babbling apologetically about the lack of a response she had sent me. Ah, there it is again. My Tris, apologetic and unforgiving. It was an explosive combination, and it's moments like these that make me question her motives with me. "Worthington came over and began talking to me about politics, and all I could do was nod, and I just wanted to text you, and-"

I shut her up quickly with my lips, wanting to hear nothing about politics. A warm, syrupy feeling erupts inside me as her delicate blue eyes begin to close, and I wrap my arms around her, pulling her closer. I begin to smile into the kiss, the kiss becoming hotter and more passionate. I wanted nothing but her, and she needed nothing but me. I was so happy, just being with her like this. This was all I ever wanted, and this is all would ever need. I pick her up, and spin her around, and she lets out a laugh, her laugh like a beautiful bell. It was perfect, the snowflakes like confetti, dotting our clothing and our hair, and I laughed along with her, wanting her to be happy.

"Tris?"

A sudden voice interrupts us, and I hesitantly turn around, to tell whoever it is to fuck off, to leave us alone, and that they'll be lucky if-

"Al?"

Beatrice's voice rings with fear, as I turn around frantically. There stands him, Al. Tris' apparent boyfriend. He looks at both of us, muttering profanities under his breath, before he turns on his heel and runs. He just found us out.

She turns towards me, her crystal eyes beginning to flood with tears, "Tobias-"

I pull her small, thin body into my own, and stroke her hair gently, wanting it to be okay. It would be okay, as long as she needed me. We could beat this, together. "We can do this," I promise, under the howling winds and the storming cold of the Chicago city, "Together. I promise."
