AN: Hey. So, sorry about disappearing there:( I was going to make this one at least twice as long to make for it, but I just needed to get this up and I was taking too long. So instead, Im going to try and update extra chapters this week. My goal is at least two more by next Monday. That makes for three updates in one week!. No promises, but i'll try:)
Hanna slumped into her kitchen and dropped her bag to the floor. She blew a strand of hair out of her eyes and pulled a beer out of her fridge. She heard somebody flush the toilet and then the water running. She smiled as Caleb rounded the corner. She opened her mouth but was interrupted by an impatient banging on the door. She found an unhinged Emily on the other side of the door and ushered her in.
"Um, hello."
"Sorry, I was just on a run when I saw you pull into your driveway."
"When I said you're welcome anytime..." Hanna chuckled at Emily's small frown. "Want a beer?" She pulled one out for Emily and tossed another to Caleb.
"So Em, did you enjoy the cabin trip?" Caleb popped his cap and took a long swig. Emily rubbed her arm and pulled her earbud out of her ear to join the other at her side. She offered Caleb a smile and a nod, but chose to remain silent and she popped her own beer. Hanna quirked her eyebrow at her, but let the odd behavior go. Emily looked down at the damage she had already done to her drink and shrugged.
"I guess I'm done with my run now."
"Did you need something, Em? Or just stopping by to say hi?"
"Actually, Hanna, I was wondering if I could stay here tonight."
"Yea, of course! Anytime." Hanna gave her a light shove.
"So am I being evicted?" Caleb smirked and chuckled. Emily was quick to make sure she wasn't imposing.
"No, no I'll just sleep on the couch."
Spencer stared at her computer, willing her work to go away. Her thoughts wandered to the past weekend. She hadn't seen Emily since the car ride home, and she hadn't been brave enough to try texting her. She knew Emily reciprocated the feelings to some extent, but that didn't stop the jitters. It was new territory. She heard a light knock at the door and she straightened up, pushing her glasses up her nose. Her mother popped her head in before entering fully. She eyed her daughter before sighing and shutting the door lightly behind her. Spencer closed her laptop halfway and leaned back in her chair, waiting for her mother to speak.
"Spencer, It's time you tell me what's going on." Spencer's heart pounded into her chest with fear.
"What's going on? What do you mean exactly?"
"You have been so disheveled and you've had this far off look in your eyes." Spencer looked down, and almost out of habit went to play with the missing ring that used to be on her ring finger. Her mother's eyes followed her actions and she looked at Spencer's bare ring finger.
"Toby and I broke up." Her mother was taken aback for a minute, but quickly regained her composure.
"How are you?"
"I'm ok." She gave a weak smile. Her mother twiddled her thumbs, looking at the ground.
"Well, this work will still be here tomorrow, you've worked long enough today. Go home." With that she left the room. The personal detachment of her mother was always the same. She quickly made her way to her car, finding that it was starting to get dark already. When she got home she poured herself a glass of wine and texted Emily.
Can I see you tonight?
I'm at Hanna's
Can I pick you up?
Spencer felt the need to keep their one on one meetings quiet. She wasn't ready for the world too know, especially Aria. Emily happened to be in the same boat; she knew Spencer wasn't ready to tell people anything, and she didn't want Hanna to criticize her for 'getting her hopes up for a straight girl'. She texted Spencer back.
Come at midnight, and turn your headlights off.
Spencer smiled to herself and finished her glass of wine before taking a shower.
Spencer pulled on her black peacoat and grabbed her keys. She took a deep breath as she took one last glance in the mirror, her nerves already building up.
Emily kept glancing out the window. Hanna and Caleb had gone upstairs over an hour ago, and she hadn't heard anything since. Assuming they were asleep already, Emily relaxed a little. The idea of 'sneaking out' made it so much more exciting, and she felt like a teenager again. Sure enough, she heard the soft hum of a motor pull into the drive, but she didn't see any lights. She opened the front door to see Spencer getting out of the car. Emily took tentative steps towards the passenger door, smiling at Spencer as she stood there, holding the door open. Spencer tilted her head and gave a lop-sided smile.
"Do you do this for everyone?" Emily asked.
"Do you not like it?"
"No, I do."
"Good, because this is what you're getting yourself into." Spencer leaned in close to Emily's neck as she spoke. The heat sent shiver's down Emily's spine. She ducked down to get in the car, and Spencer closed the door softly. She walked around the front of the car, taking a look at the house; the coast was clear. Spencer pulled out and headed towards the park.
They walked towards the trail that they used the first time they visited the park together. Spencer kept stealing glances at Emily as they strolled through the dark.
"What?" Emily blushed, noticing Spencer's looks. Spencer giggled and ignored her. She grabbed Emily's hand and pulled her further down the dirt path, having nowhere to go.
"Remember our first time here?"
"Of course, you told me about your lake house."
"Yes." Spencer chuckled, recalling the memory. It had only been a few weeks since they last walked through the park. An owl hooted to their right, making them jump at the sudden outburst in the quiet air. It didn't take them long to come to the clearing where Spencer had invited her to her lake house. The flowers still surrounded the areas edges, and they could hear the crickets chirping. Spencer pulled Emily down to the grass and into her lap. Emily caught her breath and glued her eyes to Spencer's. She leaned in slowly, only ghosting her lips against Spencer's. When she tried to pull back, Spencer wrapped her hand around her neck and pulled her closer. Their breath's collided, encompassing them. Emily ran her hand up Spencer's neck and into her hair, and slightly bit her lip. She heard Spencer's breath hitch and smiled into the kiss. She finally pulled back, looking down at Spencer. Spencer was all too aware of the pressure of Emily's body weight on top of her. She tilted her chin up and breathed heavily on Emily's neck. When Emily tilted her head back, allowing Spencer more space, Spencer slowly licked upwards towards Emily's hear, then left a trail of kisses going down the now wet skin. She followed back up, blowing lightly over the trail, leaving Emily's skin cool and making her shiver. A small moan escaped Emily's lips, sending tingles throughout Spencer's body.
"We should stop." Spencer finally managed. Emily pouted and got off of her, helping her onto her feet. Spencer pulled out her phone and was surprised to find it was already 1:30.
"We should probably get going, I have to work in the morning." Spencer grabbed Emily's hand and walked her back to the car. When she pulled into Hanna's driveway, she helped Emily get out of the car. Emily leaned against the door and glanced at Spencer's lips.
"Thank you, for tonight; for coming out with me." Emily nodded and pulled her in. She lightly placed her lips against Spencer's, and Spencer pressed her body into Emily's. The cold car door sent chills up Emily's back. Spencer reluctantly pulled away, and let her go.
In the morning, Hanna found a fully clothed Emily on the couch. She even still had her shoes on. She sat next to her on the couch and smiled to herself. Upon seeing eye movement, Hanna straightened up and asked:
"Good morning princess. And where did you go last night?" Emily smirked and rubbed her eyes.
"I was here all night"
"Nice try. I came down to get a glass of water in the middle of the night and you were gone. And now here you are wearing shorts, a hoodie, and you still have your chucks on."
"I just went back to my house to get stuff, thats all."
"Ok, ok. Whatever you say. But I'll find out. You know me better than that."
"I know, Han. Trust me, I know." Emily chuckled and got up to get breakfast. A surge of energy went through her. Like when you have something to say to your friend, but you can't; and also, the energy you get when you have a secret to hide. It's funny, you almost want them to find out because you want to see their reaction, but at the same time you don't want them to know because, obviously, you're keeping it for a reason. It's so exciting, like a nervous excitement. Oh, the thrills of secrets.
