Chapter 14: Talk
When Jason got to the area outside of Lily and Emily's hospital rooms, he was surprised to see Sam sitting on the floor with her head in her hands. He could see that she was shaking and he immediately sat next to her.
"Is everything okay? Are the girls okay?"
"They're fine." Sam reassured him. "My mom and I just figured everything out."
"What do you mean?"
Sam explained Elizabeth's involvement in the situation to him, along with Ric and Manny's. By the end of the story, he was fuming.
"I'm going to take care of this."
"No. My mom is talking to some people and we're going to do this the right way. I don't want her to die, Jason. I want her to have to suffer and watch us being happy and she'll have nothing."
"We need to have a talk, Sam."
"Okay…"
"What are we going to do after the girls are out of the hospital? I don't want them to live in different states."
"I agree." Sam sighed. "I was figuring that I would get a house in Port Charles. We'll trade days with the girls."
"What?"
"Jason, we can't just jump right back into a relationship. For the past seven years, I thought you were a cheater and you thought I was dead. Things have changed and we're going to have to move really slow. Everything needs to be about Emily and Lily and what's best for them."
"What's best for them is living in one place, not moving all around town."
"I haven't figured it out yet, okay? We'll talk about it when we get closer to that time." Sam noticed Reilly and Taylor coming down the hall. They were both smiling.
Jason stood and offered Sam a hand, pulling her to her feet. They met the doctors halfway.
"We have some good news." Reilly announced.
"Finally." Sam sighed in relief. "What is it?"
"Lily seems to be responding well to the transplant."
"Thank God." Sam and Jason said at the same time.
"Where do we go from here?" Sam questioned. "What's our next step?"
"We're going to move Emily's transplant up to tonight. Molly is ready and we need to get things moving. She's very sick, which is what caused her heart to stop."
"So let's say both girls react well to the transplants. Then what?"
"They'll have to stay in the hospital for about a month. The first 100 days after a bone marrow transplant are the hardest." Taylor told them. "They will have to be closely monitored, especially since their immune systems will be compromised and they will be at high risk for infections. You will need to live close to Port Charles. Jason, you're from here, correct?"
"Yes."
"Sam, you wrote that you live in New Jersey. We would prefer you to stay in Port Charles."
She looked up at the man she was still very much in love with. "I'm not going anywhere."
"That's good to hear. We are going to do Emily's transplant at around 10 o'clock tonight. Until then, we want to keep everyone out of her room, including the two of you."
"What about Lily?"
"You may go in and see her."
"Thank you both, and I'm sorry for snapping earlier." Sam hugged both of the doctors.
"We completely understand." Taylor replied. "We'll see you in a little bit."
Jason and Sam walked into Lily's room and took the chairs by her bed. Sam grabbed her daughter's hand and kissed the back of it. She was ecstatic that they had finally gotten some good news.
"So if things keep going well, we'll be bringing her home in a month." Sam whispered so Lily could rest. "Maybe we should live together."
"You guys could move into the penthouse. You could take one guest room and Lily could take the other. That way, we'll all be together."
"Sounds good to me." Sam agreed.
Jason wrapped an arm around her shoulder. She leaned against him. "It's going to be okay."
"I hope."
Two days later, Lily finally had some color back in her cheeks. She was staying awake longer, her appetite was better, and she was in a much better mood. Jason was enjoying getting to know her and not surprised to find out that she was exactly like her mother.
Emily was improving too. She was reacting well to her bone marrow transplant so far, but it was still too soon to tell for either of the girls. She was still tired a lot of the time. Her parents didn't push her, knowing that she needed the rest to get better.
"Mommy, what's going to happen when I get better?" Lily wondered. "Are we going back to New Jersey?"
"No, baby. We're going to move in with Jase and Emily."
"Like a family?"
Sam laughed. "Yes, like a family."
"We're a weird family. Normal families know about their mommy and daddy all the time and don't get sick."
"No, they don't, but where's the fun in being normal?"
"Hey." Jason walked into the room. He had gone home to shower and get a couple of hours of sleep while Sam stayed with the girls. They had been taking turns, trying to actually take care of themselves so they could take care of their daughters. "Look what I've got."
Jason put a DVD in the TV and they quickly recognized it as one from Lily's dance recital the year before.
"Where did you get that?" Sam questioned.
"Nikolas. He thought that it might help me get to know Lily from before all of this."
"Will I be able to dance like that again?" Lily wondered.
Jason sat on the chair on the other side of her bed. "You'll be able to dance better because now you know just how strong you are. It's unbelievable how well you're doing, Lil."
"It's cause I'm strong!"
"You sure are."
Sam heard a knock on the door and turned to see who it was. She saw her mother, who was waving her over. "I'll be right back." She went to the hallway, shutting the door behind her. "What's going on?"
"Elizabeth was arrested this morning in connection to your kidnapping. Ric is being tracked down too."
"It sucks that that's the only thing they can get her on. I wish she could spend life in prison for wishing death on a seven year old child."
"Me too." Alexis agreed. "Right now, we're just gonna have to see how this plays out. They're going to need a confession since there's no real evidence to prove anything."
"Let's hope she talks then." Sam turned to look at Lily and Jason, who were talking and smiling. "She's doing so much better."
"She looks amazing. I hope that you'll let me get to know my granddaughters."
"Of course I will. I told you yesterday that I thought you would be disappointed in me once I told you I was pregnant with Jason's. After I thought he cheated on me, I was embarrassed. I didn't want you to know that everything you ever said about him was true."
"We can't change the past, so let's not dwell on it. Let's just move forward." Alexis hugged her oldest daughter. "Jason has changed, for the better. He's a great father to Emily, and I know he'll be the same way with Lily."
"He already is. She absolutely adores him. She had always been curious about her father, and I'm glad that they're getting along."
"What about you and Emily?"
Sam turned around so she could face Emily's room instead. "It's crazy how fast I fell in love with her. I've only known about her for a little while, but I love her just as much as Lily. She's my daughter and I'd do anything for her."
"You're an amazing mother, Sam. I'm so proud of you."
"Thank you."
The next day, Emily started to feel a lot better. She was talking and smiling more and Jason finally thought she was starting to act like the daughter he had raised. The girls were allowed to be in the same room together for the first time since their bone marrow transplants and everyone was happy about that.
"What's your favorite color?" Lily asked.
"Purple." Emily answered.
"Mine's pink. Your turn."
"What's your favorite movie?"
"Ummm…Cheetah Girls!"
"Mine's High School Musical!"
Sam and Jason just watched them talk with smiles. Neither of them had ever even imagined that they had twins, so the whole experience was kind of surreal. After Emily and Lily met, they knew that there was no chance of ever separating them again.
"Daddy, is Lily gonna share my room?"
"No, she's going to sleep in one of the guest rooms. We'll fix it all up for her and get her whatever she likes."
"Why can't we share?" Lily wondered.
"Because then if one of you gets sick, then both of you probably will and it won't be good for your bodies. It's better to keep you in your own rooms." Sam stated.
"But can we still play together?"
"Of course you can."
"What about school?" Emily questioned. Lily made a face, showing how she felt about school.
Sam and Jason both laughed before the latter answered. "It's gonna be a little while before you have to worry about school."
"Are you gonna get married?"
They both froze at Lily's question. Jason wasn't sure what to say, so Sam took over. "Daddy and I have a lot of stuff we have to talk about, but we both love each other very much. One day, we might get married, but it won't be for a long time."
Jason watched her with their girls and he knew that them getting married wouldn't be as far away as Sam thought. They were meant to be together. It was awfully convenient how Lily happened to get sick on Sam's trip to Port Charles and at the same time Emily did, which led to the discovery that they were twin sisters separated at birth. He would do everything possible to make sure his family was never separated again.
