Chapter 14
Darkness enveloped her. She felt heavy, like a weight was laying on her chest. She tried to move but couldn't. She told herself to open her eyes, but they remained closed. She started to panic.
Kevin had been sitting on one side of the bed, Rick on the other when the monitors started to go off. The doctor rushed in and requested they step out into the hall. Both men started pacing in front of Kats door, trying to listen to the commotion that was happening inside.
"She's fighting the anesthesia. Let's give her Propofol to try and relax her for now." The doctor exited the room and let them nervous men know they could go back in. "She was fighting the anesthesia, but she needs to rest for now. I've ordered a mild sedative so she can relax. Let me know if she starts to wake up." He walked away writing in her chart.
Kevin and Rick took their respective spots on each side of the bed. Kevin held Kats hand in his, running his thumb over her knuckles. "Kat baby, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. Just come back to me… please…"
Rick could barely look at Kat. This was his oldest and dearest friend… someone he was in love with at one time. The girl he planned to marry when they were younger… she has been through so much during her life, not including the past few years. Rick wasn't sure how much more she would be able to take. He glanced over at the distraught man holding her hand, and knew Kevin was going through a similar hell as he was. Probably worse. He just found out he was going to be a father. Rick realized Kevin had never talked about having kids when he was with Jenny, what if he didn't want them? He shook his head, this wasn't any of his business. Except, she would always be his business. He still loved Kat, and nothing would change that.

The super at their building turned over the camera footage from the hallways. In it Kate and Javi had found who knocked on the door, and were shocked at the answer. Javi called Kevin to fill him in, while Kate called Bedford Hills Correctional facility to track down an inmate.
Hospital
Kevin heard his phone buzz and stepped out into the hall to answer. "Espo what did you find? Tell me you got the son of a bitch…"
"Well, funny you should say that. We saw the surveillance from your building. Kev, it was Shioban. She's who showed up at the door and shot Kat. We didn't even know she has been released. Did you?"
"What? No! How… check with the D.A -see if she cut a deal. Maybe that's how she got released." Kevin's mind was swimming.
"How is she?" Javier tried to hide the concern , but there was no way to. He was scared… for the woman he cared about, as well as his partner. "Has she woke up?"
Kevin raked his hand through his hair and began pacing. "No, she started to fight the anesthesia so they gave her a mild sedative. She came through surgery fine…" he trailed off.
"But? I'm sensing a but…"
"She's 4 weeks pregnant Javi." Kevin leaned against the wall and slid down to the floor. "The bullet didn't damage anything but her spleen. They want to watch her for at least 24 hours and make sure the…" he couldn't say the word. It would make it real. He was met with silence on the other end of the phone. "Javi? Did you hear me?"
Javier mumbled "Yeah, I gotta go." And hung up on him.

Javier pushed himself away from his desk and stormed into the break room in search of coffee. She was pregnant. They needed to make sure Bobby S stayed behind bars, and find Shioban. She had to be safe, if it was the last thing Javi did. It was going to be a long night.
Hospital
Kat found herself standing in the apartment . She heard a noise, looked down and saw a bundle wrapped up in her arms. A baby? Where did this come from? Then a knock at the door. She answered and saw the curly haired woman in front of her, gun pointed at her. "No, please you'll hurt the baby!" Kat yelled , but it didn't stop the bullet. She felt the pain run through her, and she looked down to find her arms empty. "Where's the baby?" she screamed , before dropping to the floor. She looked up and saw Kevin's blue eyes staring at her.
"Kevin? What… where am I?"
The anesthesia had worn off, and the sedative was no longer effective. Rick ran to find Doctor Bradley, while Kevin jumped up and tried to calm Kat down.
"Oh my god Kat, you are awake! It's okay you're in the hospital. Everything will be fine, just stay calm okay?"
"Kevin where's the baby?"
He gave her a strange look. There's no way she knew about this and didn't tell him. "Baby?"
"I was holding a baby, and then I heard a knock on the door. Some woman shot me, and then the baby was gone. What happened to me?"
"Well hello sleeping beauty. How are you feeling?" Doctor Bradley appeared and started taking vitals.
"I… I don't know. Confused." Kat didn't understand what was happening . What she just saw was so real to her. She could feel the baby in her arms, the cries, the gunshot. She could smell the gunpowder. "I was shot."
"Correct . The bullet hit your spleen, and did too much damage to repair so we had to remove it. I want you to try and stay as still as possible, I don't want you tearing any stitches okay?" he told the nurse what tests to run and what medicine to give her, all of which went over Kats head.
"What about the baby?"
Doctor Bradley hesitated . "You knew you were pregnant?"
Kat glanced between him and Kevin . "Pregnant? No, I was holding a baby… wait, I'm pregnant? " She looked towards Kevin "We're having a baby?"
He grinned and nodded at her. "Yeah babe. We're having a baby." He leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Doc already checked, neither the bullet or the surgery hurt it. They just want to keep you for observation for the next 24 hours, make sure nothing changes."
While the Doctor was in with Kat and Kevin, Rick stepped out into the hallway and called Kate to update her and Javi.
