Chapter 14
Jack
Two weeks before the wedding, I was in the Hub early. I had decided to let Ianto sleep and get some paperwork done – of course I left a little note saying where I was, I wasn't stupid...well, not all the time. Besides, there were a few things I needed to check before I passed them over to my Welshman. One of these things being a strange cylinder device that we scavenged from the bay a few days prior. I was sure I had seen it somewhere before, but I couldn't remember where or what it was. I turned it over in my hands, frowning slightly.
"What are you?" I muttered to myself.
I placed the cylinder on my desk, hands either side of it as I leant forward, staring at it. I knew what it was, but I couldn't but a name to it. That always bugged me. If I could remember what it was, then I could decide whether or not to keep it here. Though I had a bad feeling about this.
After a couple of minutes I stood up properly, picking the cylinder up too, before leaning against my desk. I turned it over in my hands, trying to find something that could help me identify it, or something I could press so I could see what it did. Sighing, I pushed myself away from what I was leaning on and walked down to the main section of the Hub.
"Maybe Tosh could run it through...something." I mused, quietly.
That was when it happened. My finger slipped and part of the cylinder dipped inwards, turning silver. Suddenly a beeping sound emitted from it, getting faster and faster. That's when I realised what it was. We used to use them in the time agency, well, before they were banned for being too risky. I wouldn't be able to get away from it, besides it was already locked on me.
"Well, at least it will only be me blowing up this time, not the Hub." I muttered.
That's when the cog door rolled away.
"Jack!"
Ianto, Owen, Tosh and Gwen were all standing in the doorway, watching as the beeping sped up, faster and faster.
"Stay back, I'll be fine." I told them.
"Jack? What's going on?" Ianto asked, starting to panic.
"Don't worry, Yan. I always come back."
BANG!
"Come on, Ianto. You heard what he said. He always comes back." I heard Owen say.
"Owen leave him alone." Gwen sighed.
"What? I'm just saying."
I wasn't awake just yet. Hell, I was barely alive yet. But my hearing had started working again. And I could feel material – clothes! – on me. How long have I been gone this time? Suddenly there was a pain in my chest, a burning pain. Quickly, I bolted upright, gasping for air, trying to relieve the pain. I felt something clinging onto me then. No, not something...someone. Ianto. I wrapped my arms around the Welshman, holding him tighter.
"What was that, Jack?" came the muffled question.
"Bomb. Used to use them when I was working as a Time Agent. Been centuries since I last used one." I replied. "Focuses on one person or thing, so only I would have been blown up...unless you got too close."
"Thank fuck we weren't any closer!" Owen called. "We swallowed parts of you as it is, rather that not happen again."
The others agreed as my eyes widened.
"You... What?" I asked.
"Well, yeah. We were all shocked." Tosh said, quietly. "So some of your blood, after you exploded, flew over to us and well..."
She ended on a shudder, one that the rest of us copied. They swallowed my blood. That was...disturbing. It was like with Rex... Rex. My blood. My team.
"Oh my God!" I yelled, making Ianto flinch back a little.
"Jack?" he asked, worriedly.
I brought up my left wrist, flipping the cover over. Tapping away, I was able to quickly scan Ianto and the rest of the team, waiting impatiently.
"Jack, did you just scan us?" Tosh asked, bewildered.
"Yes." I replied.
"Why?" Gwen questioned.
"You'll see."
I looked through the data that was coming up on my wrist strap, trying to find what I so desperately needed to know. All the data stopped scrolling, paused on one part. I slumped down onto the ground, wide eyed.
"Jack?" Ianto whispered. "What's wrong?"
"Gwen, you remember Rex, don't you?" I sighed.
"Yeah, why?" she replied.
"Remember what happened when he and Esther transfused my blood into him?"
"Yeah, he... Wait, so you're saying because we... So know we..."
"Exactly."
"What are going on about?" Owen demanded.
It took a while, but Gwen and I had told Ianto, Owen and Tosh about Rex and Esther and all about Miracle Day. We told them how, after Rex and Esther transfused my blood into Rex, Rex had become immortal. I explained how, because they had swallowed my blood after I had been blown up, they were now the same. They were now immortal, like me. If they died, they'd be brought back. If they were hurt, they'd heal in seconds.
"Welcome to the club." I sighed. "You know what, all of you, take the day off. In fact, take the week off. Don't come in unless the Rift Alarm goes off."
"Are you sure, Jack?" Tosh asked.
"Positive. It wouldn't be best for you all to work after all this. Go home, relax."
Sure, it took a lot more persuading, but after a good few minutes, they were all headed home. Ianto and I didn't speak the whole way back to his flat – though he insisted it was ours, since we practically lived together now. I wanted to know what he thought about this, but I didn't all at the same time. It was worrying. But I wasn't going to push it. So I stayed quiet. Until we were sitting on the couch.
"Well, this is going to take some getting used to." Ianto said.
"Yeah." I sighed. "I'm sorry, Yan."
"Sorry? Why are you sorry?"
"What do you mean why am I sorry?!"
Ianto's face coloured slightly, but didn't look away from where he was looking at me.
"I'm fine with it." he told me.
"You are?!" I shouted, hopefully.
"Yeah. Means I won't have to worry about when I'm going to die...again. It means I get to spend more time with you."
"Try all your time, Yan. I'm never letting you go."
"Good."
I couldn't help the smile that wormed its way onto my face. I leant forward, pressing my lips roughly to his, hands on his waist. His arms had slid upwards to wrap around my neck, his right hand fisting my short brown hair gently. My tongue ghosted across his lower lip, making his mouth open slightly as a small moan escaped. My grip on Ianto tightened as my tongue dived into his mouth. He was surprised when I dragged him onto my lap, arms closing round his waist. My tongue brushed against his as we continued, but all too soon we pulled away. Breathing heavily, I rested my forehead against his. Even I felt the colour rise to Ianto's face.
"I love you, Jack." Ianto told me, quietly, still smiling.
"Love you too, Ianto." I grinned. "Now that that's sorted out, I say we...celebrate."
"Is that all you think about?"
"That...and you. Most of the time, you know, when I don't have to think about aliens."
Ianto took his forehead off of mine, shaking his head slightly, still laughing. I dragged him closer, face inches from mine again.
"So, mind moving this to the bedroom?" I asked, waggling my eyebrows.
Going redder still, Ianto slid off of me. The pair of us stood up. Well...this went better than I first thought.
