Hello fellow Fanfiction Lovers!
Chapter 14 today
Don't own Marvel...
The next day I met Prince Thor, Sif, Loki, and the Warriors Three at the front of the palace. Even though I was very upset the following day I was still very happy about my new armor that Lady Sif helped me get. Once everyone had arrived at the front of the palace and we made sure that we had everything needed for the quest we left for the Bifrost. Prince Thor decided to have us horseback ride to the Bifrost due to urgency. I was not happy about it, but since I had improved since our trip to Nidavellir I did not mind as much.
While riding I couldn't help but think of the times of riding with my father. I remember racing my father through the fields and him always winning. I could never really figure out how he always beat me until I realized that his horse was a warrior's horse, one bred to be fast and strong. But when I was as young as I was I did not quite understand why he always won. Looking back now I understand but still-
"Sanna why are you crying?"
I hear Fandral's voice ring out. Upon recognizing his words I wipe my eyes, I hadn't realized that I had started tearing up when I was thinking of my father. Honestly it shocked me slightly that I was crying over him of all people, considering how long it has been since he died. I tried not to think of him often, because in the end it would leave me question more than reminisce.
"I-I'm not I just have something in my eye. It's nothing to worry over Lord Fandral."
I smile and notice the skeptical look he gives me, but thankfully he says nothing. I look around to make sure the others did not hear him question me. Thankfully I see Sif conversing with Thor completely oblivious to anything that Fandral has said. I am also happy to see Hogun and Volstagg oblivious as well.
I let my eyes carry over to where Loki is riding and I see him staring intently at me. I can tell immediately that he has seen me shed tears. We hold each other's gazes much longer than I care to admit before I realize that I have been staring. I feel my face heat up, and I watch curiously as Loki blinks turning his gaze away from me and back to the road ahead. I tear my eyes away from his form and look back on the road, my heart racing as I furiously shake my head.
Stop it Sanna! He made it very clear yesterday that he does not share your feelings.
So instead I let my mind drift to happier times once more, times when my mother and I weren't servants. A time when my father was still alive, happy, and breathing along with my mother and I.
It wasn't until we reached the Bifrost before anyone spoke again. Thor quickly told Heimdall our destination, and I watched in awe once more as the Bifrost began the process of sending us to Muspelheim. Anxious and not thinking clearly, I grab the hand next to me. Slightly startled at my own reaction, I look over to see who it is before we are whisked away by the Bifrost.
Thankfully I see Fandral's is the hand I grabbed and not Loki's. Fandral smiles at me reassuringly before we are sucked into the Bifrost. I once again feel the odd sensation of the travelling ways of the Bifrost. Which is still the equivalent of a stroll through Niffleheim, but still not as bad as my first Bifrost trip. Even though I was more prepared for the landing this time, I was still off balance when we landed. I would have fallen to the ground again but somehow Fandral still had ahold of my hand and managed to keep me upright.
"Many thanks Lord Fandral."
I say as I release his hand, and he just laughs. "Still don't like the travelling ways of the Bifrost Sanna?" I just smirk slightly knowing that it is a rhetorical question. Fandral holds my gaze for longer than I truly expected him to. He then unexpectedly grabs my hand and caresses the top with his thumb. He smirks as if this is normal behavior for us, but I know better.
"Do not worry Sanna, you will be a master of these journeys before you know it. Actually you are doing a fare job now."
I nod my thanks, and grow slightly uncomfortable from his strange behavior towards me. I awkwardly get him to release my hand and smile. I had seen how Fandral handles women before, and he has tried his advances on me before to which I always declined. But during a quest was a new one for him, maybe he still felt pity from when he saw my tears? I dismiss my thoughts deciding it would be better to worry about the task at hand.
I turn my gaze to the world that we have landed on and I am immediately greeted by a wave of nauseating heat. I look around and notice that Muspelheim is a bare wasteland carved out only by liquid fire coming from the one last look I turn my gaze towards Prince Thor, and the others to await instruction. When I look over I notice Loki slightly glaring in Fandral and I's direction. At first I believe it is directed towards me, but then I notice Fandral grow uncomfortable standing next to me.
Why is he glaring at Fandral like that? Did they have an argument before this? No he couldn't have they were talking before we left the palace. The only other explanation would be that he did not like how Fandral was behaving towards me but that obviously is not the case.
"Alright everyone," I hear Thor say, interupting my thoughts.
"This morning Odin learned of this journey, because of this he has asked us to retrieve an object for him called the Wizard's Eye."
"What's the Wizard's Eye?" Volstagg asked, voicing a question that from the looks on everyone's faces we all had.
"The Wizard's Eye is an artifact of great power. Sadly though father has neglected to tell us what it does." Loki says sounding annoyed but surprisingly with a hint of bitterness.
"Brother let me speak," Thor says sounding slightly angered before turning his attention back to the group. "We do not know exactly where the Wizard's Eye is but Heimdall was able to narrow down our search to two places that are close to where we are standing now. We are going to split up into two groups and look at both of these places. Loki will lead Sanna, and Sif. I will take Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg. Where I am heading is where the Wizard's Eye is located. Where Loki's group is going will be a place where Fire Demons are known to dwell to lead off suspicion."
Thor then turned to Loki, Sif, and I again. "You shall be a group of three and I do mean three Loki. Meaning I advise that you do not disappear like you occasionally do." Loki rolls his eyes at his brother's words, " I left you one time in Svarthalfheim when I was gathering the herbs you told me to retrieve. It's not my fault you can't hold your own against a few elves."
Thor sighs indignantly, "they were magic users brother."
"I still saved you didn't I?"
"After I was almost knocked unconscious by a spell."
Loki smirks slightly but it looks strained, "details, details."
Thor glares at his brother once more before returning to instruction. "I will take the Warriors Three to the north and Loki will take the others to the area in the south." After Thor finishes instruction Loki steps forward and creates one duplicate of himself. "
My image will go with your group Thor, this way we will know if anyone is in trouble. If a group is in danger my illusion will tell whatever group and guide you there." Thor nods smiling, his previous irritation forgotten and pats Loki rather hardly on the back. Which causes Loki to be pushed forward slightly.
"Excellent plan brother!"
"Many thanks for the compliment."
Loki says with a hint of anger in his voice, as he glares Thor. Even though the glare would send most into submission Thor pays it no mind. Loki finally sighs and continues."Once each group is finished we shall just meet back here."
Everyone nods at Loki's words before we all wish good fortune to one another and leave with our designated groups. Loki, Sif, and I walked in silence for much of our journey. I tried to make it seem that my reason was not because I was refusing to speak with Loki and was just curious about the scenery of Muspelheim. Sadly Sif did not buy it for a minute. She would keep looking between Loki and I as if noticing the obvious distance that was kept between us as we walked and furrow her eyebrows in confusion.
"I'm going to go on ahead to scout out the terrain." I hear Loki say quietly, Sif looked as if she was about to protest but Loki spoke before she could. "Do not worry I will stay where I can be seen." Loki says scoffing, as he rolled his eyes. Once he is far enough ahead and there is not a chance that exchanges of words will not be heard I let out an annoyed sigh.
"What is wrong with him?" I hear Sif whisper beside me gesturing towards the obviously annoyed prince.
I shrug, "I haven't a clue. But I wish he would stop."
As we walked Sif pursed her lips as if she was deciding if she wanted to voice a thought. I let it go for a while but the expression changes so that not only is she pursing her lips, but she is also letting her eyes dart back and forth between me and Loki's distant figure.
Finally I can no longer take the behavior, "why do you keep looking at Loki and I like that?"
Sif stops her strange expression and looks at me thoughtfully. After what feels like forever, she voices her thought.
"Well I just noticed that his behavior was odd but it seemed to increase when he saw you speaking with Fandral."
I am slightly startled by her statement and stop dead in my tracks. She takes a few steps before she notices and looks back at me.
"What are you inferring?"
I ask her incredulously. She mutters under her breath words I cannot decipher. Something about oblivious girl and then raises her voice to speak louder. "I also noticed you two are not speaking."
Not wanting to tell her why here I just shrug, "we had a small misunderstanding two days ago at his ceremony. Nothing horrid or anything of the sort."
Sif looks back in his direction. "Maybe it was not small to him." I bark a laugh at her remark, unable to contain myself. I see her pale at my reaction, and I quickly realize how unlike me that had been. What's wrong with me? I have never been so disrespectful to her before.
"Sorry Sif," I say my eyes now downcast. "I shouldn't have done that. It's just that for your words to be true Loki would actually have to care for me and I fear that is not the case." Sif looks surprised at my words and then realization dawns on her and she grins.
"Sanna you honestly believe that he doesn't care for you? I saw you two talking at the feast, how he acts around you even now. This is not normal behavior for him. Even when he and Thor fight he acts more angry and his sarcasm tends to be more bitter than normal. He also tends to take out his frustrations through pranks or other antics. Right now though he is not even acting angry, just bitter and aloof. And I know you refuse to believe this but his mood did not get any better when he saw you and Fandral."
I let her words absorb, only to be welcomed by my confused thoughts. Could it be true? Is he really angered by that? More importantly us not talking has taken a toll on him? No, that cannot be. I let go of my confused thoughts and lift my head to look at Sif.
"I'm sorry Sif, but there is no way us not talking matters to him in the least. He's made it very clear that I am nothing but a servant to him."
I immediately notice the bite in my words after I say them. Sif nods but then gets a contemplative look on her face, then a look of surprise graces her features. I turn back to Loki and he is now standing right next to us. How long has he been standing there! Loki looks at the two of us, a smirk on his features but when I look into his eyes I see nothing but irritation.
"If you two are done speaking," he starts to say while glaring at us. "I believe we have almost reached our destination. I'd like to point out we would be there by now if you two had not stopped walking to speak of childish nonsense." I wince at his words, immediately feeling hurt. Get a grip Sanna! I tell myself , trying to relieve the feeling.
"Loki there is no need to snap at us!" I hear Sif yell defensively.
Loki instead of retaliating, turns from us and continues to walk to get a closer look at the destination we had reached. Realizing that his is getting us nowhere I come to the conscious decision that I will have to talk to Loki. And considering how his mood has been towards me thus far, it will probably not bode well for me. Instead of using an aggressive approach that Sif tried. I walked up to where Loki was walking ahead of us and fell into step with him.
"I-I do not know why you're acting this way Prince Loki, but please if you're mad at me do not hurt Sif along with me."
Loki's face remained impassive as I finished saying my plea. We walked in silence for a few moments until he sighed, I thought he would say something but he still remained silent. I end up stopping grabbing his wrist and making him turn to face me.
"By the Norns, Loki why are you acting this way!? Are you truly that uncaring?!"
I watch as Loki's shocked expression from my rant shifts into an arrogant smirk.
"I did not expect that from you Sanna, I am slightly impressed."
I want nothing more than to scream at him and wipe the arrogant smirk off his face but before I can I notice that his smirk is fake. I do not know how I can tell but when I look in his eyes it just seems false. I want to question why, but my anger would not allow it. So instead I take a deep breath and turn away from him.
"Let's just get this over with already." I hear Sif say, voicing my own thoughts. The three of us finish our walk in an awkward silence
Finally we reach the area that we will conduct our supposed distraction. I gasp once we are able to see the whole area. The area is littered with many different volcanoes and lakes of fire. As I am surveying the area I finally see my first Fire Demon. There is about six of them that appear to be clustering around one of the volcanoes for some reason. When I look closer at them I gasp, and cannot help but think they are named well. Even though they are about the size of a normal Asgardian they look nothing like us. Their skin is red as if it is on fire, and they have pointed ears. They truly look how I would imagine a demon to look.
"Grotesque looking creatures aren't they?"
I hear Loki whisper quietly. "How are we supposed to distract them, and how will this help Thor?" I turn to Sif after she finishes speaking and Loki looks at the both of us with a seriousness that wasn't there before.
"We have reason to believe that they knew we were coming for the Wizard's Eye. We almost came here but Heimdall was able to see through the deception before it was too late. Thor proposed that all of us storm the true location of the Wizard's Eye, but I told him that we should still send a group here so they do not suspect anything."
Sif nods grimly, "so we are not a distraction but a sacrifice."
Loki immediately scoffs at her words. "I do not know about you Sif but I for one will not die in the fields of Muspelheim. We just have to distract them long enough for my vardoger(A/N term for a doppelganger or double in Norse Mythology) to inform us that Thor and the others have retrieved the Wizard's Eye."
The confidence in Loki's voice calms me but seems to do little for Sif. Loki looks at Sif and I solemnly, "I'm going to make us invisible to them, but we will still be able to see one another. Oh and Sanna…" Loki then looks into my eyes with an unknown expression gracing his features. "Think before you act. You are still inexperienced."
I know!
Instead of voicing my exasperated thoughts I nod, which Loki uses as his cue to raise his hand and cast an invisibility spell on us. We begin to climb down the steep mountainside we were conversing on and towards the cluster of Fire Demons. Loki went out ahead of us gracefully jumping down the face as if he was flying. Sif follows closely behind him leaving me to climb down the old fashion way. I am saddened to see that I have reached the halfway point the moment that Sif and Loki were waiting for me impatiently at the bottom. I cannot hear what they are saying but the two seem to be having a heated argument about something. I watch them for a moment more before sighing and continuing my descent.
Third person Sif
"Why in the name of the Norns would you leave her up there Loki!"
Sif yells at Loki once she reaches the bottom. Loki looks back at her with a guarded expression that shows a false humor."I thought it would be amusing…"
"No you did not! Loki you have done a lot of cruel things but you would not leave Sanna up there without reason."
Sif stares at Loki accusingly as if she was just daring him to go against her words. Seeing no way out Loki sighs, "I'll go get her." He starts to move but Sif grabs his arm before he can teleport to Sanna.
"I know why you are doing this."
Loki stiffens considerably, "I highly doubt you can find reasons in my actions Sif."
Sif raises an eyebrow at his statement but then her face calms.
"I saw your reaction with how Fandral was acting with her."
At Sif's accusation Loki immediately takes a defensive tone. "I always react that way towards Fandral's indecent ways with women I find it repulsive."
Sif rolls her eyes at his defense, "it is true that you normally do find it indecent. But you usually roll your eyes or use an illusion to humiliate him. This time you outright glared at him as if you were considering something much worse than a prank. Not to mention ever since then you have been hostile towards Sanna, granted you were acting odd around her before but still." Sif stops speaking and Loki crosses his arms defensively and sighs.
"You are trying to imply that I am fond of Sanna."
Loki appears to be pained for a moment but he quickly shifts his expression to a more arrogant emotionless one.
"Sif you have always been relentless in your attempts to get me to stop coming on these quests but claiming that I have feelings for an Asgardian servant surely is the lowest you have gone."
Sif sighs exasperatingly at his denial.
"Loki I sometimes wonder who you lie to more, the people around you or yourself."
The arrogant undertone in Loki's demeanor wanes, until Sif can see an emotion that appears genuine, confusion. He turns from Sif's gaze quickly and then disappears in a green light. Sif looks up in time to see Loki steadying Sanna on the rock face by wrapping his arm around her waist. Sif smirks slightly and shakes her head at the sight.
"Loki Odinson you really are a piece of work."
First person-Sanna
As quickly as the argument started it ends and before I know it Loki is behind me breathing down my neck. I gasp at the suddenness and the closeness of his body. The feeling of his warm breath on my neck causes me to gasp and my face to heat up. I start to fall forward but before I can stop myself or even recognize what is happening Loki wraps his arm around my waist.
"So much trouble…"
I hear him murmur under his breath his voice surprisingly thick with emotion. Once I am steadied, whilst blushing I strain my neck to look at him. But before I can utter a single word a green light envelops us and we are instantly by Sif at the bottom of the ravine. Out of reaction I immediately start thrashing and Loki lets go of me. Feeling embarrassed I look down at my feet, "I-I'm sorry…" I manage to say quietly, and for the first time in ages I am tempted to fall at their feet and beg for forgiveness. I hadn't felt that ashamed in a long time.
"It's not your fault Sanna," I hear Sif say.
"I should have helped you down to begin with."
"No Sif you're quite wrong, I should not have assumed that Sanna could handle climbing down a simple mountain face. Considering that she cannot even figure out magic on her own…"
Loki trails off, arrogance in his tone but sounding slightly strained. Sif immediately slaps him across the face, "Loki are you daft?!"
Sif whispers sternly and Loki stands there looking slightly shocked and amused by Sif's boldness. Sif quickly composes herself and looks between the two of us, "I do not know what has transpired between you two but the hostility is growing tiresome."
She pauses in her statement to look at Loki accusingly and continues. "If we want to finish this quest with no casualties you two need to work together. After this damned journey is over and we are back on Asgard I will be sure to tell Thor of this and you two will work whatever this is out."
After Sif finishes her words Loki clears his throat to grab our attention and tells us we should start our attack. The three of us hide behind a rock close by the Fire Demons. Loki puts a finger to his lips signaling us to be silent. Sadly this action causes me to look at Loki's lips which in turn makes me think about what happened on the rock face leading me to think about him kissing me. I shake my head to get rid of my thoughts and grab my bow off my back.
I draw an arrow from my quiver, notch it in my bow and turn back to Loki to wait for my signal. Seeing that I am ready, Loki nods and we immediately spring into action. Loki springs out from behind the rock with a throwing dagger in hand. While in the air he throws it in one fluid motion towards one of the Fire Demon as soon as the dagger makes contact with it's arm it starts to freeze around the entry wound. The demon screams in pain and rips the dagger out, it starts to run towards Loki but by the time it reaches where he was he is gone and Sif is there instead attempting to slash it with her sword.
I never get to see the outcome of her attack because I have already turned and started firing at one of the other Fire Demons. Sadly the arrow incinerates before it can touch it's red skin. Realizing that my normal arrows will have no effect on these beasts I start to think of what I can do. My mind turns to the protection enchantment Loki had helped me master.
The object wants to protects itself right? Maybe it will protect itself and in turn hurt the Fire Demon? Maybe I can enchant it to specifically protect itself?
Having no other choice and the Fire Demon coming towards me I spring into action. I grab another arrow from my quiver, once it is in my hand I begin to cast the enchantment. By the time the monster is almost upon me I finish the enchantment and with a quick prayer to the Norns I fire my arrow. I watch hopefully as the glowing arrow heads towards the demon's heart. The arrow then penetrates the skin right where the demon's heart should be.
It screams, stumbles back away from me and tries to rip it out. But since I enchanted it to only protect itself and the caster the demon is unable to grip the arrow. I notch another enchanted arrow but the demon looks at me with rage in its eyes, still alive. The enchantment isn't strong enough! I shoot another arrow at the beast, this one penetrating its lower abdomen. Even though it seems that the enchanted arrows are slowing it down, it still is not stopping.
Realizing this I pluck another arrow out of my quiver and attempt the strengthening enchantment. Feeling terrified I surprisingly finish the enchantment, as soon as I do I fire it at the demon. Sadly though my enchantment fizzles out before it reaches the Fire Demon's skin thus the arrow is incinerated.
Damn it all! Come on Sanna you can do this try again!
My subconscious encourages me and I grab another arrow from my quiver. The demon is running towards me once more but this time instead of giving into my previous fear I am calm. I finish the enchantment and fire it at the demon's head. The arrow flies through clearly almost the same as when Loki had enchanted his throwing dagger to take down the Rock Troll before.
To my surprise the Fire Demon falls forward towards me. I jump out of the way before it takes me down with it. I look down at the demon and see it laying motionless at my feet. I breath a sigh of relief and look up to see how the others are doing. I first lay eyes on Loki who is gracefully fighting two Fire Demons, I look down to see another already dead at his feet. I shift my gaze just in time to see him using a glowing sword to slit one of the Fire Demon's throats leaving it dead.
Satisfied that Loki is handling himself, I turn to see Sif also slitting a Fire Demon's throat. I am about to call to her when I see a Fire Demon coming behind her at an alarming speed. Not thinking I start to run. We should have been fighting back to back! We weren't all because I am fighting with Loki. Sif is going to be injured or worse! Damn I have to make it in time!
Cliffhanger!
I honestly wasn't going to do that but then the chapter got to long so I cut it here.
Please review and tell me what you thought. Advice and criticism is welcomed!
See you next Saturday!
Oh and Happy Birthday to Tom Hiddleston!
