Chapter 13
Return of Darkness
Kalin tossed restlessly in his sleep. It wasn't that he was uncomfortable in bed, but his dreams were hectic and cluttered. When he dreamt, even when there weren't pleasant dreams, he still didn't sleep as bad as he was. He was dreaming of the previous Signer-Dark Signer war and all the terrible things he had done. How he injured and hated Yusei in the first war. Even though he'd gotten over how horrible he'd been as a Dark Signer, it was still painful to even think about what he'd done. Let alone re-watch them in his sleep.
His temples were pounding like they did when he got a headache or migraine. His right arm throbbed. Both increased in strength as flashbacks replayed over and over in his head. He'd had so much anger clouding his judgment. The visions of him as a Dark Signer continued. But they were altered slightly as they continued. They seemed different. Like they were dreams about the future. Could these dreams possibly be visions of the upcoming war?
His arm throbbed again. He tossed and turned, breathing hard in his sleep. He ground his teeth at the nightmares, wanting them to stop. The golden-eyed man tried to will them away, but was not successful. He cried out for the dreams to stop. As he did, he found himself standing in darkness. He was alone, or at least he thought he was alone. There was no one else physically, but he still felt another presence with him. Kalin couldn't see ten feet in front of him though.
He wished there was some light, though his eyes were adjusting to the darkness in the dream. His arm throbbed again and a slight glow emitted at his right. The ice-blue-haired man looked at his arm. A familiar purple glow shone. He lifted his arm up to his eye; the Dark Mark of the Giant resided on his skin. Even if this was just a dream, he was not happy to see that Mark. And what if wasn't a dream?
Kalin Kessler did not want to be a Dark Signer again!
"Oh, and why not, Kalin?" A deep, familiar voice asked. "Don't you want to have power?"
He sighed. It was nice to have some power, but not those of dark nature, "No." he answered
"But you haven't fulfilled your revenge against Yusei," another voice that wasn't as deep told him. It also seemed familiar.
"I have no need to be angry at Yusei," he responded, looking around, trying to find where the voices were coming from.
"Even though he betrayed you?" The first voice asked.
"He didn't betray me!" He said fervently, "And that was over twenty years ago!"
"You will become a Dark Signer again, Kalin," the second voice commanded sternly, "It's a part of your destiny."
Next to the golden-eyed man, Misty was having just as much trouble sleeping. She was experiencing everything she had done as a Dark Signer all over again. She didn't even remember much since the memories were fuzzy. But she knew well enough what she had done, even if she didn't remember the full details. The dreams or visions or whatever they were stopped, and she also found herself standing alone in darkness, being told exactly what her husband was being told, as well as her former Dark Mark on her arm.
"I don't want to be a Dark Signer!" She yelled in the darkness as she was told she would become a Dark Signer again.
"I see you need convincing," the second voice said calmly.
A small light appeared in front of her and began to go back and forth.
At the Atlas Apartment
Carly was also in the darkness of her dreams with her previous Dark Mark of the Hummingbird, being told what the other two were. She had also called out that she didn't want to become her friends' and husband's enemy again. And the voices had also told her she would become one. When she refused, the small light appeared in front of her. It went back and forth, and she couldn't keep her eyes off of it. No! The dark-haired woman knew what this was: hypnotism!
She tried to take her eyes away from the light, but her head wouldn't move. She willed her eyes to close, but they wouldn't listen. It was like every part of her was paralyzed. Her eyes went back and forth, following the light until she was barely aware of her forced actions. The longer she followed the light with her eyes, the more dazed she became. Soon, she was unaware of what was going on. Her memories even seemed clouded, like she couldn't remember something important. They were distant and fuzzy.
"Let's try this again, Carly," the second voice said to her. "You will become a Dark Signer. You still have unfinished business with Jack. After all, he was the one who turned you into a Dark Signer the first time."
"Jack turned me into a Dark Signer?" She inquired, confused. She didn't remember that happening.
"Yes," the deeper voice told her.
Carly watched a scene unfold in head. She was falling from high above to the ground. She saw the Arcadia building as she fell back; she could see Sayer. The reporter realized she was falling! Hundreds of feet to the ground below! If she hadn't gone snooping in the psychic headquarters, this wouldn't have happened. If she hadn't met Jack, she wouldn't have been so curious about Goodwin and the Arcadia Movement and the Signers! It was all because she had met Jack!
She felt anger in the pit of her stomach, surging through every part of her body. She could feel the anger surge through her veins. She could even feel the dark power of the Dark Signers surge though her. It was all Jack's fault!
"Become a Dark Signer, Carly…" The deeper voice told her.
"Help defeat the Signers…" The lighter voice said, "Make Jack pay for what he made you go through."
The dark-haired woman's eyes narrowed, getting a vicious look in them, "Yes…"
Though she couldn't see the owners of the voices, she could feel them grin evilly.
The second voice spoke, "Welcome back to the Dark Signers, Carly…"
The Following Morning—Kessler Apartment
Lane felt something shaking his shoulder as he slept on his stomach. He shrugged his shoulder, trying to get rid of whatever was shaking his shoulders. He refused to open his eyes, still essentially asleep. He wanted to be fully asleep. The shaking of his shoulder continued. He groaned slightly and ignored it. He wanted to catch up on the sleep he'd lost when he had been worried about Copper and about their relationship. He still had a small headache from when he cried, and the ice-blue-haired boy rarely cried.
"Lane! Lane! Lane! Lane! Lane! Lane! Lane! Lane! Lane!" A small voice was frantically shouting as the shaking against his shoulder continued, becoming as frantic as the voice.
He recognized the voice of his little four-year-old brother, Gabriel. He sighed. The little boy had probably had a nightmare and wanted his older brother's comfort. He usually went to their parents though. And even if he did crawl into his brother's bed, he usually didn't disturb his sleep and just wriggled his way into his brother's arms. Lane forced his eyes open and turned his head towards his brother as the little boy started to poke him in the head in an attempt to wake him up. He looked at the clock on the large bedside table they shared. It was barely past three in the morning.
"Yes, Gabriel?" He asked, annoyed at the sleep he was losing. Then he noticed the frantic look in his baby brother's blue eyes and forgot his irritation, "Gabe?"
"Lane…" the dark-haired boy said quietly, sniffling.
"Gabe, what's wrong?" he inquired, "Bad nightmare? Want me to get mom or dad? Or sleep with me?"
His brother's lip quivered, and he threw his arms around the older boy, beginning to sob, "Mommy and daddy! They're gone! I w-went to their r-room after I w-woke up fr-from m-my n-nightmare. But…But wh-when I g-got i-in there, they weren't there!"
His eyes widened, "Wh-What?"
"They aren't there!" The little boy cried again.
"What's Gabe crying about?" Mikaylan yawned as she came into their room through their connected bathroom.
"Mommy and daddy are gone!" Gabe exclaimed again.
Their sister was awake now, "What do you mean they're gone?"
Lane stood up, holding their brother, "I have to see this."
The ice-blue-haired boy walked out of his room, still holding his brother, and headed towards his parents' room, his sister behind him. The three Kessler children quietly made their way into their parents' room. The door was slight ajar. The three quietly went into the bedroom. Their parents' bed was empty, the sheets messed up and the pillows still were indented from their parents' heads. They saw their parents' decks were gone.
The oldest two children's eyes widened as they looked at each other. Their little brother was right. Their parents weren't there! The two, with Lane still holding their brother, ran out of the bedroom and around the apartment, looking for any sign of their parents. They looked in the living room, the kitchen, the terrace, the den, the dining room. Heck! They even looked in the closets! But they had the same results every place they looked.
There was no sign of Kalin or Misty anywhere!
"Lane, what do we do?" Miky asked, frantically as the three congregated to the living room, turning on the lights in the apartment. "What are we gonna do?"
The oldest stayed as calm as possible, "First of all, we can't panic."
"But mom and dad are gone! How can we not panic?!" His sister exclaimed.
"Mikaylan, believe me, I wanna panic," he told her. He rubbed his little brother's back as the young boy clung to him still, "But we just have to try and stay calm." He dropped his voice, "The two of us are older than Gabe. He shouldn't see us panic. Not unless we want him traumatized."
The dark-haired girl sighed, "You have a point. What else do we have to do?"
He reached for the phone, "I overhead mom say she wanted us to stay with Yusei and Akiza if anything happened to them. So the next thing we do is call Yusei."
At Fudo Household
The two Signers were mostly relaxed as they slept together. Yusei slept on his back, breathing rhythmically. Akiza slept partially on her stomach and partially on her side, her arm across her husband's chest. Her head rested on the dark-haired man's shoulder, her loose hair tickling his neck slightly. The dark-haired man's arms rested on his stomach as he slept. The soft sounds of the married Signers' breathing and the small breathing of their infant son filled the room.
The phone began to go off, the ringing breaking the silence of the room. Both the cobalt-eyed man and brown-eyed woman jolted away. The baby woke, too, startled by the noise; he started to cry. The female Signer detached herself from her husband and went over to the infant. She picked him up, rocking him to calm him down as her husband picked up the phone.
"Remind me why we put a wireless phone in our bedroom?" The redhead asked, going back over to their bed, starting to nurse the baby to quiet him down.
"It was so we didn't miss an important call during the night," he replied. "And I think this is important," he told her before putting the phone to his ear, "Hello?"
"Yusei," Kalin's oldest son said, "our parents are gone."
"They're gone?" he asked.
"Yes," the boy on the other line responded.
"The Dark Signers must have gotten them," he replied quietly.
"My mom said she wanted you and Akiza to take care of us if they disappeared like this," Lane told him. "I know we're going over to Copper's grandparents' when the war starts, but I don't think it's a smart idea for the three of us to stay alone in the apartment."
"I'll get there in a little bit," the Signer responded, "Bye, Lane."
"Bye, Yusei."
"Yusei, what's going on?" His wife asked as he hung up the phone.
"Kalin and Misty are gone. I think the Dark Signers got a hold of them," he told her, getting out of bed, beginning to get dressed. "I'm going to bring their kids over here until all of the kids go over to your parents' place. And I think that's going to happen soon."
"All right," she replied, finishing nursing the infant. "I'll get the spare bedroom and the couch ready for them."
"Good idea," he said.
A thought came to the redhead and her eyes widened, "Yusei, if Kalin and Misty are gone, then Carly was probably taken, too!"
His eyes widened, "You're probably right."
"I'll call Jack to see," she assured, reaching for the phone.
The dark-haired man nodded as he pulled on his jacket. He went into the bathroom and splashed some cold water on his face to wake up more. He looked into the mirror and could see his worry for his friends. He left the bathroom and looked at his wife, who was just getting off of the phone. She simply sighed and placed the phone in its cradle before looking at him. From the look in her eyes, he didn't even have to ask what the answer was. Carly was gone as well.
"Jack didn't take finding her gone too well," his wife said quietly, getting up and putting the baby down in his crib now that he was calmed down. "This war is going to be hard on him, even if he doesn't show it."
"It's going to be hard on all of us," he replied.
She nodded in agreement, beginning to gather up some blankets and pillows, "Go get Kalin and Misty's children. They're probably scared being parentless."
"Right," he responded, "I'll be back as soon as I can."
"I need to get the sleeping arrangements ready for them," she said again as the two left their bedroom and began heading down the stairs.
The two reached the bottom of the stairs when they heard footsteps at the top of the stairs. They looked up at their daughter, rubbing her eyes. Her hair was loosely tied back and the sleeve of her nightshirt partially covered her Marks. She must have heard the phone go off.
"Mom?" She asked sleepily with a yawn, "Dad? What's going on?"
"Yes, Yusei, what's going on?" Nan inquired, appearing from her room downstairs after hearing her son come down the stairs.
"Kalin and Misty have disappeared," Yusei responded, deciding to not hide this from his daughter or mother.
Copper's eyes widened, "Are Lane and his brother and sister okay?"
"They're shaken up, but they're all right from how Lane sounded on the phone," he told her. "I'm going over to their apartment and bringing them over here."
His daughter simply nodded, "All right. Is there anything I can do?"
"You could help me with setting up a place for them to sleep," Akiza told her. The redhead turned to her mother-in-law, "Nan, could you make some tea and some hot chocolate? With Kalin and Misty gone, Lane, Miky, and Gabe are probably pretty shaken up. And I know I'm a little apprehensive with this turn of events."
"Of course, Akiza," Nan replied, "I can do that."
Copper nodded as her father made his way from the living room to the garage. The dark-haired psychic followed her mother around the living room, setting up a sheet and a couple blankets on the couches. She was extremely concerned for her boyfriend's parents. The Dark Signers had gotten a hold of them, and both had clearly voiced how they didn't want to become Dark Signers again at the meeting earlier that day. She was also beginning to worry more about the war that would occur.
She was silent as she helped her mother change the sheets on the bed in the spare bedroom upstairs just a little way from the dark-haired girl's room. The room wasn't used often unless there was a guest staying for a long period of time, such as three or more days. The younger psychic thought her friend Jen had been the last person to stay for an extended sleepover when her parent's had been out of town for a week. It had just been easiest for other girl to stay with the double-Marked Signer since they went to the same school and the same dance studio.
Both the psychics went back down the stairs and sat down on the couches that were now set up to sleep on more comfortably. She twiddled her thumbs wondering who the second generation Dark Signers would be. Her grandmother set a tray of two tea kettles, with one filled with hot cocoa, and mugs and teacups on the coffee table. The young girl watched her mother take one of the teacups and pour herself a cup of tea. She copied her mother, but poured hot chocolate instead.
She carefully swirled her drink in her cup, wondering who the second generation Signers would face. She thought back to her dreams from a couple of weeks ago. The dreams she had where she faced the Dark Signers; there had been three of them. There had been Lane, which she was most afraid of. Then there had been Miky, which confused her. And finally the other Dark Signer had been her rival, Arlene. Then Raven had said something about facing some boy named Gavin. But who could be the others? And how many could there be?
She snapped out of her thoughts and looked at her mother, "Mom? When will us kids be going over to Grandma and Grandpa's? And when do you think the war will start?" She asked quietly as she sipped a little bit of the sweet liquid.
Her mother looked into her teacup with a slight worried expression on her face, "We'll probably send you kids to my parents' sometime this afternoon. As for the war, I'm not so sure. If I had to guess, maybe tonight. Or tomorrow. But I really don't know."
Copper stayed silent until her father came back home with her boyfriend and his siblings.
Coming Up in "Second War":
"We're going to do everything we can to get your parents back. We'll get them back."
"Please be safe. Good luck! I'll be cheering for you all the way!"
"Your power is stronger than you realize. You can bring back what was taken from my mistakes…"
"Grandfather Hakase?"
Next Time—Chapter 14: Spirit Talk Part 1
AnimeKiwi369: I hope that preview peaked everyone's interest in the next chapter. I'll try to start updating during the weekend, if I remember and get my lazy bones to reread what I wrote and do all of this.
Unfortunately,I won't be able to update this weekend, as I get to go to an anime convention! An anime convention where three of my favorite voice actors, though I say that about most, are going to be guests, and one of whom is one of my all-time favorite voice actors! I'm so excited! :D
So I probably won't have any internet except on my phone. And I can't very well update from there. But the weekend after that or during the first week of school, I should be able to update next.
I'm still afraid of running out of chapters, and I really should be writing for 5D's more. If only my novels and laziness weren't getting in the way of that. If I can get past this block I have with Copper in the current chapter I have of "Second War", I should be good to go.
I'm also trying to get some more FanFictions out on the site, so look out for any more stories I put out, especially if you like Beyblade, UtaPri, Hakuouki, or Phi Brain. The former three I have stories started a little for, but I'd like to get one for the latter one started.
Wow, I'm rambling now, huh? Well, I hope you all stick with me as I continue this story and others. And wish me luck on getting my first novel published! :D
I'll try to update in a reasonable time frame. So please be kind and please review! :3
