Chapter 14- Bitter Revenge
"Magnus, do you want any breakfast?" Seraphina called from the living room.
The whole apartment was an absolute mess. She had just gotten people who slept over night to detach themselves from the couch or the floor, there were cups all over the place, food on the floor and random pieces of clothing were dotted around. Cleaning the whole room would take forever, if you were a mundane that is. Seraphina pulled her kimono over her and lifted both of her hands so they were almost in line with her shoulders. Just as Magnus opened his bedroom door, everything hovered into the air, things that were complete rubbish like the cups and inedible bits of food transformed into dust, clothes were folded and put into a pile on the couch, bottles that still had something in them were put back into the cupboard, the dust that remained flew out the window. But Seraphina couldn't control her power. The doors began to violently vibrate and even the couch began to hover in the air.
"Seraphina, stop," Magnus ran next to her and pulled down her hands, "control yourself."
She looked at him in the eyes to see his shiny cat eyes glittering at her. She collapsed into him and breathed heavily as everything fell to the ground and doors stopped shaking. Magnus held her in his arms, only wearing his robe and boxers, Seraphina was buried into his chest and was shocked by how she couldn't control herself. She could easily control her emotions and what she said, but not her powers.
"What's wrong with me," she whimpered,
"Nothing, things like that just happen," Magnus comforted her,
"But why?"
She looked at him hoping for an answer, but didn't get anything. Instead he walked over to the cupboards and looked through them. As Seraphina flopped onto the sofa, she saw Magnus's bedroom door open again and a very happy guy walk out in one of Magnus's robes.
"So, it was you guys who were keeping me up," she chuckled as Alec walked over to Magnus,
"Yeah, not sorry by the way," Magnus laughed before kissing Alec's cheek.
Seeing them together made Seraphina jealous, she wanted the relationship they had, a relationship where eventually you always ended up together. She got up, moved over to the one cupboard that Magnus hadn't looked through yet and took out some cereal. Alec got the milk from the fridge and put it on the counter.
"Thank you," Alec said as he got out bowls,
"You're very welcome," Magnus joked,
"I was actually talking to Seraphina,"
"Why are you thanking me?" Seraphina stood next to Alec and poured the cereal into the bowls,
"Your talk before was what made me come back in here, Magnus and I probably wouldn't be together now if it wasn't for you," Alec smiled at her and she smiled back,
"Yeah, she likes to stick her nose into other people's business," Magnus got out a carton of juice and poured it into glasses.
When they had prepared breakfast, they sat on the couch, put their feet on the coffee table and ate. Seraphina was placed awkwardly in the middle of the very cute and happy couple, but she enjoyed their company. She was glad that she and Alec were finally getting along, the conversation they had over breakfast was actually quite fun and they constantly laughed, when she turned to Magnus, it was clear on his face that he was glad they got along too.
"So what are you two love birds planning on doing today?" she finished her cereal and put it on the floor under the bridge of legs,
"Not sure, I need to get some of my stuff and bring it here, then afterwards I feel like going for a walk in the park," Alec smiled,
"Sounds like an idea, we could all help and then have a picnic or something," Seraphina got up and put the bowls on the side,
"Sounds great, but first, I need a shower," Magnus got up and walked over to the bathroom door.
He looked at Alec as if expecting him to follow him into the shower, Seraphina couldn't help but giggle.
"I may need some help when it comes to my back," he hinted.
Alec shot up and bolted over to him while both Magnus and Seraphina laughed.
Clary couldn't sleep last night and neither could she sleep during the day. In the morning she had gotten up, had a melancholy shower where half the water was her tears and gotten dressed into a grey jumper and jeans. When she had finally forced herself out of her room, Isabelle had ran up to her to tell her that Alec and Magnus were back together and that they were all going out…everyone except her. She declined immediately when she realized that everyone included both Jace and Seraphina.
So here she was. She had been going from the institute to her house with her stuff, when she first got home, there was a letter from her mother which she then brought with her back to the institute where she decided to have a break and read it. Good news would be a little spec of light in the dark for Clary, she just wanted to know that Jocelyn was safe.
Dear Clary,
I'm fine, but this job I've been asked to do has become very depressing. A group of us had to find a couple that had gone missing and return them back to their house safely. We found out that the couple were on a job at the City of Hidden Monsters. The City of Hidden Monsters is basically where they keep anyone and anything that is thought of as too dangerous or monstrous, for example there is a werewolf that was bitten by a vampire. When we got there it was absolute chaos, Shadowhunters that had done terrible crimes had been released a long with many demons and they had destroyed anything that stood in their way. The most horrible thing of all is that we found the couple we were looking for…dead. The husband was a Shadowhunter called Damian Blake and the wife was a warlock called Belladonna Blake, they must have died at least eight years ago. One of the thoughts in my mind was that they were basically the heterosexual version of Alec and Magnus. Any child of a warlock and Shadowhunter would have to be sent straight to the City of Hidden Monsters because they feel that the child would be a big threat and wouldn't be able to control their powers, eventually they would become a monster. They're looking into this and will probably ask me to find out if they had one. We believe that they were killed by a prisoner called Amaranth. He is known for killing hundreds of downworlders and when Shadowhunters got in his way, he killed them too. Apparently he was one of many to be given blood out of the mortal cup which makes him very dangerous now he is on the loose. I should be on my way back soon so I expect the house to be clean and for you and Jace to have made me something to eat. Stay safe my angel and I hope everything over there is okay.
Love your mother, Jocelyn xx
It was nice to have heard from Jocelyn, she had been gone for a couple of days with no word until now. She had heard the surname 'Blake' from somewhere but her mind wouldn't reveal where to her. As she began to put the rest of her things into a box, she heard a group of people walk through the corridor towards the kitchen.
"There should be drinks in the fridge. Seraphina, do you still have the snacks we bought?" she heard Alec say.
That was it! Clary felt proud of herself, she could finally put the little miss perfect Seraphina Blake to shame. The others wouldn't like her so much when they find out who she really is, they'll be able to see right through her like Clary could. She didn't want Jace to fall for a liar and a monster, if he wasn't going to be with Clary, he should be with someone who truly deserved him. Clary dropped her box onto the bed, put the letter in her pocket and walked towards the kitchen while trying to hide a slight grin. When she got there she saw Jace getting out drinks from the fridge, Alec and Isabelle opening packets of snacks, Magnus and Simon leaning again the counter and Seraphina sitting on the counter swinging her legs. How could a monster like her look so innocent? She was wearing a big white unbuttoned shirt with paint splatters over it, a pastel purple tank top, big baggy black trousers and golden sandals, her hair was put into a pony tail to one side and for once she wasn't wearing any makeup.
"Have a good day?" Clary asked as she stood in the door way.
Everyone went silent and looked at her with faces of shock. She saw Jace try his best not to look at her but Seraphina was the only one who still tried to look cheery.
"It was quite fun actually, you should've come," Seraphina smiled,
"I'd rather stay by myself than with a disgusting liar like you," Clary practically spat the words out of her mouth.
The amount of shock on everyone's faces grew, she knew no one, not even herself would expect her to say anything as mean as that to someone. Seraphina looked at her with the same shocked expression, but something in her eyes told Clary that she was hiding something, but Seraphina didn't know that Clary knew what that thing was.
"I am not a liar," Seraphina argued confidently
"Yes you are. Why don't you show everyone how you can get cat eyes without contacts?" Clary looked at her sternly.
Jace breathed in heavily, "Clary, don't do this."
Did he already know? Did he know all this time, even when they were together but didn't tell her? By the looks of everyone else's faces, they were completely in the dark, apart from Magnus, but Clary knew that he would probably know.
"For those who don't know what I'm talking about, the ever so perfect Seraphina is part warlock. That's why she is with Magnus and that's why there were warlock markings all over her wall," Clary explained.
Alec turned to Magnus with a face of anger, "Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because, you didn't technically ask and it was none of your business at the time," Magnus argued,
"Yes, but she's dangerous, she could kill us all, things like her are considered to be monsters that can be even worse than greater demons," Isabelle looked as angry as Alec.
Seraphina was frustrated, her biggest secret had been revealed and her relationships that were based on lies were crumbling into pieces.
"Why are you doing this?" Seraphina asked as she got off the counter and gripped Magnus's arm,
"Because you took Jace away from me,"
"No I didn't. I was being this thing called a friend while you were pushing away the person who loved you the most,"
"At least the people who love me are still alive," Clary didn't mean for that to come out, but she couldn't stop herself.
The only way to explain what she had said was by reading the letter Jocelyn had sent, it would prove that she was right about Seraphina being a warlock but also that her parents were dead. She didn't think about the consequences of reading it to her, throughout this whole thing she wasn't really thinking at all.
While she read out the letter, she saw Magnus look down with shame for some reason, Simon, Alec and Izzy looked at Seraphina with sympathy and Jace looked at Clary with disappointment. She didn't dare look at Seraphina; while reading it she realized that the main point wasn't that she was a warlock, but that her parents had died, if she looked up at her, she'd be watching her heartbreak and tears stream down her face.
When she had finished reading out the letter, she looked down and Seraphina staggered back to lean against the counter and put her hand over her stomach. She had gone pale and the light that was usually in her eyes had gone.
"They're…dead," Seraphina stuttered quietly. She then turned to Magnus who was still looking down, "I can't believe you lied to me. They have been dead for eight years, but you didn't tell me,"
"I was just trying to protect you," Magnus reached out to her but she pushed his hand away,
"From what? From this? Well, you did a pretty shit job! All those presents that you said were from them, all the birthday and Christmas cards, they were all from you. All the times you told me that they were okay and you told me a message that they had sent, you were just lying."
As she talked, everything that was made of glass began to shake, the windows and the glasses that were out on the counter. Clary realized what she had done and felt ashamed of herself.
"Your parents didn't want me to tell you if you were under fourteen, but when I decided to tell you, you started crying just by the mention that something was wrong, I couldn't break your heart, believe it or not I really cared about you and I still do," Magnus looked at her with sorry eyes,
Seraphina was getting frustrated, "I started losing hope when I was sixteen but you kept leading me on. I trusted you, Magnus."
The glasses began to rise into the air and they began to vibrate faster, so did the windows.
"You lied to me. I loved you as if you were the only guardian I had, you were the only person that I would tell anything and everything to. BUT YOU LIED TO ME!" Seraphina's eyes turned cat-like as her anger smashed the glasses and the windows into tiny little pieces.
She looked around hopelessly at what she had done. Clary's revenge had gone too far, she didn't like the feeling of being the one who revealed the death of someone else's parents. She saw Jace try to put his hand on Seraphina's shoulder but she pushed him away and cried out the kitchen and probably out of the institute. Soon after, Magnus whispered something to Alec, kissed his cheek and left.
"How could you do that?" Isabelle looked at Clary with disgust,
"You couldn't at least try to tell her in a sensitive way?" Alec shook his head.
Clary was speechless. There was nothing good enough to support why she did it, she was put into a corner that she definitely couldn't get out of. She felt nauseated by what she had done, if it was done to her she would breakdown and probably hate the person forever. When she looked towards Jace, he looked at her with a face she had never seen him make before. He was ashamed and looked like he had given up on her.
"I never knew you could do something like this, something so horrible," he said quietly before leaving.
Everyone followed him apart from Simon. Despite what she just did, did he really want to stay?
"I hope this is you coping with your breakup, because the Clary I know considers other people's feelings," he said as he walked towards her.
Clary just nodded before falling into his chest and crying. She had made everything worse, not only had she lost Jace, she had lost her friends too; all she had was Simon. What had happened to her?
