More fluff here next chapter more secrets come out
Jane had gotten held up at the bakery due to a larger than normal after school rush, but the tips were great so who was she to complain. She had a few hours before she was due at the bar to work the 7pm to 2am shift. Normally that would be a sucky shift on a Thursday but with colleges back in session Thirsty Thursday kept the bar pretty crowded.
"Hey Frankie I'm home," Jane called out entering the back door on the house.
"Living room," he shouted back.
Jane tossed her keys on the small kitchen table and grabbed a water bottle on her way into the living room. She paused for a second seeing Maura sitting on the couch with her brother playing a video game.
"Oh hey Maura," she said with a smile walking over to her girlfriend and sliding into the spot beside her.
"Hey," she said giving her a quick kiss before turning her attention back to the game Frankie was playing.
"Frankie what the heck are you playing," Jane asked seeing he was playing Mario Cart, a game he hadn't played since he was a kid?
"Mario Cart…it is the only one Maura can play," Frankie said leaning to the left as if his body language would help him get around a sharp turn.
Jane turn to Maura trying to confirm the story.
"The driving games are the only ones where I can beat Frankie," Maura confirmed. "He is trying to unlock a new cart to try and keep up with me."
"You want to take a break," Jane asked kissing Maura's neck as Frankie focused on the TV.
"I can't we are racing once Frankie finishes this round."
"A few minutes into going to hurt," she said snuggling into her girlfriend side.
"Jane, I can't…I came over to see Frankie. We talked about this remember."
"Fine," Jane huffed before getting off the couch and heading to her room.
Jane knew they had talked about this and that when Maura was with Frankie Jane wouldn't take over their time together. However, now faced with the first such situation she wasn't happy about it.
"You want to go check on her," Frankie offered knowing Maura didn't like upsetting people?
"No, we are in the middle of something."
"We can take a break; I promise I won't be mad."
"She will be fine…I will see her a in a little bit…you know after I kick your butt."
"Keep dreaming."
Frankie and Maura went back to the racing game. Even though it wasn't the extreme games Frankie was used to playing he thoroughly enjoy it because it was a game he could play with his best friend. He would save the first person shooter games for Frost. The two got caught up in the game each winning a half dozen rounds when they heard Jane's door open. Maura glanced at the clock and couldn't believe over an hour had passed.
"See you later," Jane said barely stopping to hear a response.
"Jane wait," Maura said quickly. "Where are you going?"
"Work…enjoy your night."
And just like that Jane was out of the house leaving Maura and Frankie a little shocked at the abrupt departure. She didn't mean to be such a brat about things but she wanted to spend a little time with her girlfriend before working…again.
"I didn't know she had to work tonight," Maura said clearly upset at this discovery.
"I didn't either it must have been a last minute shift."
"She is mad at me."
"That's highly unlikely…if anything she is mad at me. I am the one that kept you from see her."
"I told her no…and now she is off to work in a less than great mood."
"God help her customers tonight…I hope no one orders some ridiculous fruity shot she might just throw them out."
"Get showered and changed," Maura said getting up from the couch.
"What?"
"We are going out…I will be back in an hour to get you," Maura said leaving little room for argument.
"Man the women in my life are so bossy."
Maura went home to get showered and changed herself. They were only going to the bar where Jane worked but she still didn't want to go looking like she spent all day at school. Besides she wanted t make a good impression on her girlfriend.
By the time she made it back to Frankie's it was almost 8pm. Maura of course looked amazing but Frankie was still in sweatpants.
"Frankie what are you doing?"
"Waiting for you to pick out my clothes," he said like it was the most obvious answer ever.
"You can't get dressed by yourself?"
"The last two times we went out you made me change."
"Because you picked clothes out of your dirty laundry pile," she said rolling her eyes.
Sometimes boys were so boy like. She headed back to his room and was happy to see at least all his clothes were put away.
"You're making progress."
"I swear Jane is worse than Ma…she is always making me put stuff away."
"I think she is preparing you for the real world."
"The real world sucks," he laughed.
"Here put these on and let's go please," she said laying out a pair of dark jeans and a button down top.
Frankie quickly change and they headed out the door. It was a little later than she wanted to arrive and she hoped they would be able to find a spot at the bar before he college kids took over. When they got inside Maura was pleased to see the college crowd hadn't taken over just yet.
They two underage kids took a seat at the bar…a place they technically weren't allowed to sit but Maura long since learned if you act the part people will believe you. Case in point when the other bartender came over and asked them what they wanted.
"I will have a Vodka cranberry," Maura said smoothly.
"And you sir?"
"Ahhh…"
"He will just have a Sprite," Maura filled in quickly.
The bartender nodded and went off to get their drinks
"How come you can drink and I can't?"
"For one because you look like a newbie here unable to figure out how to order a beer and two I am not letting you drink in a public place this close to the draft….that would just be foolish. Besides I am 21 if anyone asks," she said pulling out her ID.
Frankie quickly snatched it from her hands and looked it over.
"Where did you get this?"
"I have connections."
"Man you think you know a person and then they go and do something cool like this."
Maura laughed and took her ID back putting it in her purse. The drinks arrived and Maura paid cash telling the bartender to keep the change.
"Rule 1 always know what drink you want by the time the bartender asks," Maura started. "Rule 2 always leave a nice tip on the first round so the bartender will pay you more attention during the course of the night."
"Are these other life lesson I need to learn for the real world," he asked with a chuckle?
"I have been to enough charity events and other functions and I have proven useful. Even if it is open bar leave a tip and you will be taken care of."
"I'll remember that….ut-oh I think we have been spotted," Frankie said seeing his sister lock in on them.
"What the hell are you doing here? And what the hell are you drinking," Jane said immediately grabbing Frankie's drink and tossing it in the sink behind the bar.
"Relax Jane it was just Sprite….Maura wouldn't let me drink."
"I see that didn't stop you," Jane said raising a questioning eyebrow.
"Please, you act like I am committing a crime," Maura said casually.
"Umm hello," she said quietly leaning forward.
"Jane, relax I am fine."
"Yeah she has a fake ID," Frankie announced…luckily no one was around.
"Geeze Frankie why don't I just got get the owner so you can tell him," Jane said looking around to confirm no one had heard him.
"Sorry," he said taking a sip of the new glass of Sprite Jane had put in front of him.
"What are you doing here," she asked again?
"I wanted to see you," Maura responded.
"You mean since you blew me off when I was home and not working?"
"Jane that is not fair."
"I have to work," she said seeing a small group take up residence a few seats over.
Maura watched as Jane quickly checked ID's and lined up 3 beer bottles and 3 shots. Once Jane was free again she flagged her down.
"Jane I didn't know you had to work."
"Ok."
"Stop being a butthead. I can't read minds if You had told me you were working tonight I would have stopped the game."
Jane knew that was true. It still didn't stop her from waning to throw a mini pity party.
"I know we are still trying to figure out how to be in a relationship and not isolate our other friends but I hate when your mad at me," Maura said with a slight pout.
Damn her and that lower lip pout. No matter how much Jane wanted to continue being a butthead she couldn't stay mad when Maura looked at her like that.
"I was just tired and missed you and knew I wouldn't be able to see you tonight," Jane said trying to explain her actions. "But you're right, you can't read minds and I should have told you instead of stomping off."
"Talking to me isn't so hard now is it," she said with a smile.
"No, it's not."
Jane leaned over the bar and gave her a quick kiss.
"Please no more drinks."
"Deal…how about some food?"
"I will bring you some stuff."
"Thanks."
Jane went over to the computer and put in an order for the kitchen.
"Man you have her whipped," Frankie said laughing.
"Maur if you told her to jump off the Boston bridge she would."
"Good thing I would never ask her to do that."
The remainder of the night Maura and Frankie munched on appetizers Jane would bring and sip whatever non-alcoholic concoction she would bring. As it was getting later more college kids started rolling in and the bar was getting loud and crowded. Maura knew they needed to get out of there soon but it had been fun hanging out while Jane was working.
"Jane can I get the check," Maura asked?
"Leaving already?"
"Yeah, looks like you're going to get extremely busy."
"Ok, doesn't mean I have to like it though."
Maura gave Jane her credit card much to Frankie's objection. She told him when they celebrated him getting drafted he could buy the drinks…he seemed ok with that. Jane returned but had to dart off before Maura could sign the receipt. By the time Jane returned Maura and Frankie were standing just about ready to go. Maura leaned over the bar beckoning Jane to lean in as well.
"This is for you," Maura said tucking a few bills into the top of Jane shirt. "And this is for the tip jar," Maura said sliding additional bills across the bar knowing the pulled tips for the night.
"You have no idea how incredibly sexy that was," Jane husked out her voice dropping to a dangerously low level that was threatening Maura's resolve.
Jane closed the distance and pecked her girlfriend's lips.
"Text me when you get home."
"I will."
The two kissed again before Maura and Frankie left the bar. Jane was glad they came and she could actually focus the rest of her shift instead of being grumpy. It made the shift go by much faster when she could shoot the shit with the people she was servings rather than just toss drinks at them all night. Thursday didn't disappoint as by the time the night was over she made a couple hundred in tips not including Maura's bonus.
By the time Jane walk in the door it was nearing 3am. She knew she should eat something before going to sleep but really she was too tired to care. She tossed the contain of take out from the bar into the fridge and headed to her room. She flipped the light on and jumped slightly not expecting a visitor; Maura asleep in her bed. Jane walked over and sat on the edge of the bed gently brushing back her girlfriend's hair.
"Hmm Jane," Maura whispered trying to come out of her deep slumber.
"Hey beautiful, this is a nice surprise."
"I didn't want to go home," she tiredly admitted.
"You don't have to explain you are welcome here anytime."
Suddenly aware that she had a guest for the night and knowing she smelled like a bar Jane needed to shower before getting in bed.
"Let me just jump in the shower and then I will join you in bed."
Jane kissed her softly before getting up and grabbing some clothes. She must have broken a record for fastest shower ever as all she wanted to do was get back to her girlfriend. Even though she was only gone a few minutes Maura was already snoozing by the time she got back. She tied to carefully slip into bed but Maura woke up long enough to snuggle into Jane.
"Get some sleep beautiful," Jane said kissing her forehead.
"Night," Maura murmured back.
