Chapter 14
"Don't go…I didn't mean it."
Daryl wasn't sure what she meant, but vaguely guessed that it was something to do with her dream. Something like disappointment found its way in him as she pulled away and let her hand drop. For the moment he ignored it and moved to go back to his side. At the first indication that he was moving away, Lily's hand languidly reached out to touch his arm. "No," she said softly.
Her eyes closed and she dropped her hand and let it run along the space beside her before she pulled it back. Afraid that she might stir awake if he refused her gesture, Daryl moved his blankets closer to her and hesitated before lying down next to her. He rested in his back and turned to see her. Her face was facing his again and her hands were once more tucked under her head. She was only inches from him this time. He could see her brow crease a bit as she continued to dream, but soon it relaxed and he heard her exhale like she just had the world lifted from her shoulders. She may have been sound asleep, but he couldn't manage to even close his eyes. His head was still reeling from her lethargic kiss. He turned away from her and stared up into the darkness. What could she have been dreaming about? What was it that she didn't mean?
Inwardly he snorted and shook his head. It was best to forget it. He turned on his side so that he didn't face her and went to sleep.
Lily woke up facing one of the sides of the tent. She smiled at the light peeking in from outside. It looked like it was going to be a nice day out. Hopefully it wouldn't be too hot. She stretched and turned onto her other side and nearly screamed at the close proximity of Daryl. Her nose was only inches from his shoulder. Again he was lying on his back with one arm draped over his eyes and the other resting on his stomach. Why is he so close? She yelled to herself.
She froze as he groaned and shifted around a bit. He moved his head to the side a bit and mumbled something about squirrels. She inwardly giggled. But, no, he was still too close to her and she had no idea why and she couldn't ask him because he was asleep. She wasn't even sure if she wanted to ask him; it would be too awkward to ask. Maybe he moved in his sleep, she concluded. That had to be it. But he's never moved before so why now?
Slowly Lily moved away from Daryl. It would save some embarrassment and maybe he wouldn't notice and they'd go about their day as usual. She didn't get far before he sleepily groaned. He moved his arm from his face and let it rest beside him. Lily's eyes widened then closed. To save her the embarrassment she would pretend to still be asleep and he would be the one suffering the awkwardness of it all.
Inwardly she smiled triumphantly and waited for him to say something like "What the hell?" and to quickly move away from her. Instead she felt the familiar feeling of his gaze on her. He didn't say anything and she didn't hear him move.
She bravely opened one eye and peeked up at him.
"So you are awake," he said. "Thought so."
Lily opened both eyes as he let out a tired sigh. "You moved in your sleep I take it," she mumbled.
Daryl was silent for awhile. He was going over in his head what he should say to her.
"I did," he said as he sat up. "Sorry."
"It's okay," she replied.
On the inside Daryl shouted at himself and demanded to know why he was apologizing. He didn't do anything. Hell, he should be asking her for an explanation as to why she kissed him. She was asleep, damn it, he thought. She probably didn't even know that she did that.
The day dragged on and Lily noticed Daryl was avoiding her like the plague. He didn't even respond to any of her usual quips. It was a little unsettling and she wondered if she did something wrong. Was it because of this morning? She wondered. Surely that wasn't a legitimate reason though.
He didn't say a word to her, he didn't look at her, and he barely acknowledged her presence. It was like she was invisible to him. He was oblivious to her trying to get his attention.
Finally, at the end of the day, she decided to just ask him what was wrong. He was making his way toward the tent and before he went inside she ran up and stood in front of him. "Hey, she said. "Are you mad at me or something?"
He stopped and finally looked at her and not with just any look. He looked her in the eye as if he was searching for something in them. "No," he said and moved around her to go inside the tent.
She wasn't letting him go that easy though. Again she stepped in front of him. "Then why the hell are you ignoring me?"
He frowned. "So what if I am?" He snapped. "I don't gotta talk to ya every damn second of the day ya know."
The look on her face said she was slightly hurt and he regretted saying that, but made no move to apologize for it. She scowled and muttered, "Asshole."
She walked away. Daryl watched her leave and mentally scolded himself for making her upset.
Lily sat in the RV and angrily crossed her arms. He was getting mad at her and wouldn't even tell her what she did wrong. She didn't think she did anything wrong. Did she?
Going through the day without talking to her was harder to do than Daryl thought, but he needed to think. He needed time to himself to think about his emotions, the kiss, the time they spent in each other's company, and just her in general. He came to a conclusion, but wanted so badly to shrug it off. It was like a leech though and it wasn't letting go so easily until every last drop of denial left his body. It was what had him so bothered and made him snap at her. All the thinking just made him so frustrated and he didn't know what came over him. Apologizing wasn't his forte though so he would leave her be.
Daryl was lying down on his side of the tent with his hands behind his head when Lily entered. He studied her face and saw she was frowning and making it a point to not look in his direction. She sat down on her side of the tent and pushed her blankets further away from him. She moved her stuff to the opposite side to create a sort of barrier between him and her in case he moved in his sleep again. This didn't go unnoticed to him and he snorted. The audacity of the act made him want to throw that same stuff out of the tent again.
Lily lied down with her back facing him and he frowned. Two could play at that game. He moved his things so that both of their belongings were arranged in two rows between them and he turned his back to her.
Both were fuming with frustration at the other and occasionally one would peek over their shoulders at the other, but as soon as the other moved they looked away.
They stayed this way for the longest time. Not even a knife could cut through the tension in the air. There was nothing but the sounds from outside the tent and their own breathing. It wasn't until they fell asleep that the hostility disappeared.
