Midnight Hour
"Titans trouble!" Robin shouted. The various Titans immediately stopped what they were doing-some literally- and rushed to the situation room. Robin was already there, the screen showing a flashing red light somewhere in the warehouse district. The light from the giant screen cast a shadow on Robin.
"It's the Hive Five. They're raiding the new shipment of Mega Monkeys Infinity. "Robin said.
Beast Boy gasped dramatically and his hand flew to his heart "The monsters!" he exclaimed. "They must be stopped."
Cyborg shook his head in pity. Robin ignored him but directed his attention to Raven, who stood in a dark corner. "Raven?"
Raven nodded curtly and in a wave of her dark energy, teleported them all to the scene of the crime.
…
"Aw, man!" See-more exclaimed ogling the open crate of games. "We're the first people to have this!"
"I hear it's got some awesome tech. I can't wait to update my systems." Gizmo said
"And we can't wait to rub this in people's faces." five Billy Numerous said, each clutching a game each.
"Not while we're on the case." A voice said.
The five turned to see Robin, stern faced with his bo-staff drawn, backed by the rest of his team in battle positions.
Gizmo growled "Kyd! You miserable pile of snot! I thought you disabled the alarm system."
Kyd stood leaning in a corner, Midnight perched on his shoulder. He shrugged and pointed at Midnight as if to blame the feline, who shot him a bright green glare.
"I swear, you and that cat will be the death of us." See-More said.
Starfire gasped and clapped her hands together gleefully. She flew over to Kyd who panicked and stood rigidly.
"What an adorable pet! May I have on?" she said cooing over Midnight, scratching behind his ear. The cat purred gleefully. Raven groaned.
"Come back Starfire. We'll go to the pet store after." She said.
Starfire became sullen and flew back to the group. Robin's grip on his staff tightened.
"Titans, go!" he shouted. The Titans branched off, ultimately leaving Raven and Kyd battling each other. Kyd grinned.
Chicks dig the cat.
Raven scowled. "Shut up. Remember I owe you a beating from last time." She said. Kyd paused and reacted too slowly to deflect a kick from Raven, which landed square on his chest. Midnight's claws dug into Kyd's shoulders and a low growl started in his throat. Raven looked at him.
"Quiet. I'm just repaying him. He did far worse to me." she said.
Midnight leapt off his dazed owner's shoulder. He hissed and spat violently, back arched and hair on end. Raven hesitated before taking a step forward. Midnight gave a great hiss and arched wildly. He grew to the size of a panther, tail twice his length. His normally bright green eyes turned a dark, pupil less red. Thick, sharp claws sprung from his paws and tore into the concrete. Everyone stopped fighting.
Midnight? Kyd uttered in disbelief.
"Wow. That cat is awesome!" Mammoth exclaimed.
Raven said nothing. She stared into Midnight's blood red eyes, completely immobile. Robin saw something that is rarely ever in her eyes. Fear.
"Raven. Just teleport away." He whispered.
Raven willed herself to move but couldn't. Instead, she still stood, gazing. Midnight licked his lips and flicked his tail. He pounced. Raven was released for a split second and screamed. A blood curdling piercing scream of true terror. Midnight slammed her into a wall. Raven struggled wildly, acting on pure instinct.
Midnight! Release her! Kyd shouted.
The former cat paid no attention. Instead, he grabbed Raven's arms, claws digging into her flesh. Raven's screams echoed through the entire warehouse, her blood trailing down her arms and forming a pool on the floor.
"Call him off!" Robin shouted.
I can't! Kyd said through gritted teeth.
Raven flung her head back, mouth open and eyes a glowing white. Midnight breathed deeply, nostrils flaring. Something came out of Raven. A thick white wispy thing, like steam. It came from her mouth and entered Midnight's nostrils. Kyd couldn't take it anymore,
Vernart! He shouted. The entire warehouse surged with his black energy. Then he and Raven were gone.
…..
Kyd had teleported them to the first place he could think of. An endless, windy, grassy plane. He spent a lot of time there, thinking. Although the scent of grass and dirt was nearly overpowering, Kyd could still smell the coppery metallic scent of her blood. He looked at her. She had fallen unconscious and was still bleeding. Her healing wasn't working.
Kyd frowned. He was more of a teleporter than anything else, hardly a healer. To him, healing was a slow and incredibly painful process. He looked over Raven again and decided she was probably in more pain. He gritted his teeth and exhaled deeply. He started healing.
…
"What just happened?" See-More asked, eye wide.
"Where is she?" Robin growled at the now normal cat.
The feline blinked at him with impassive green eyes. Infuriated, Robin flung a shuriken at him. Midnight hissed and ran behind Mammoth. Starfire placed her hand on Robin's shoulder to calm him.
"You must remain calm, Robin." She soothed.
"She's disappeared, she's injured and she's with a villain!" he shouted.
"Robin." Starfire said softly yet firmly, "If Kyd Wykkyd wanted to harm friend Raven, he would have left the beast to devour her. We must return to the tower and search."
Robin tensed before he sighed. "Fine" Then he glared at the villains. "If anything happens to her, I won't hold back on you." He said to the cat.
….
Kyd was exhausted. He had no idea how he was even able to teleport Raven to the tower. He was carrying her bridal style, staggering from his weakness. He nearly used all his power in healing her and now, as he looked at her pale form he deposited on her bed, he was proud the scars were barely noticeable under the rips in the leotard. He heard the door open and turned to see Robin's silhouette in the doorway.
"Leave her." He commanded.
Kyd backed away. "Relax. She's fine."
"She wouldn't have been hurt if it wasn't for you and your cat."
"How was I supposed to know Midnight was a Soul Sucker?"
Robin was silent. "Where have you been?" he asked abruptly.
"What?"
"Where have you been?" Robin repeated slowly. "You've been gone for three days. We've searched everywhere. Where were you?"
"Did you try looking in other dimensions?" Kyd responded.
Robin frowned. "What were you doing?"
"Healing her."
"For three days?"
"I'm a teleporter Robin. Healing is not my forte. I'm nearly spent."
Robin said nothing as he made his way over to Raven, brushing a stray hair out of her face. Kyd saw Robin's face change. He knew that face. When Kyd spoke, he was oddly calm.
You like her, don't you?
Robin stiffened and straightened up but said nothing.
I thought you like Starfire.
"I don't know. I guess you never realize what you have until its gone."
Well, this is difficult. Kyd said straightening up.
"Why?"
I like her too.
The silence was broken by Raven mumbling something in her sleep.
"Elliot.." she said shifting her body.
Kyd brushed away the same hair Robin did, which had fallen back.
"Get out." Robin said coldly. "Before I have you arrested."
For what? Kyd asked bewildered. Saving her life?
"Get out!" Robin shouted. They heard the sound of approaching footsteps.
Alright. Kyd said defeated. I'm gone. And in a swirl of his dark energy, he was.
Robin sighed and Raven shifted again.
"Elliot." She repeated.
"Robin." Robin whispered. "Why don't you say my name.
….
Back at Hive HQ Kyd faced Midnight.
I hope your happy now. You've had your taste. Now you know she won't hurt us. Kyd said.
"Yes." Midnight said in a deep throaty voice. "She is a benevolent spirit. I wil no longer harm her."
Kyd exhaled in relief.
"That doesn't mean I like her."
