Chapter 14

Ashleigh POV

I'm back up in district twelves floor, unfortunately though tonight isn't over yet. When I arrive I was surprised to see Nathaniel, Tessa, Sam and Finnick there with their mentors. They told me that they thought it would be a good idea to start making a plan for the games. They were all already seated at the table so I took the only empty seat left, next to Sam. I don't believe what he said was true. He wouldn't sacrifice himself for me, we are just friends. Ok he probably would because we're friends, I know I would. There was just something in the way he said it that made me think he meant something more. Did he? I have to stop over thinking things; there is more important stuff to worry about. Everyone has started arguing about what is the best thing to do in the games. While everyone is arguing Haymitch is leaning back on his chair while frequently have a sip from his beverage. I think that Haymitch out of all the people should be the one contributing to the plan. I know he's old and usually drunk but he has survived the hunger games and was a mentor to two victors.

"Everyone just shut up for a second!" I yell when all the arguing starts annoying me. Everyone stops arguing and looks at me. I turn to Haymitch. "You've been quiet through this whole discussion. You must have some helpful information." I say to him. He takes another sip of his drink and then puts it down on the table.

"Now why would I have any useful information?"

"Because you've helped people survive the games before."

"That was then this is now. It's been thirty years since I've had anything to do with the games." Haymitch stands up with his drink suddenly back in his hand. "I'm going to go get a refill and then I'm going to bed." I stand up ready to start arguing but Tess beats me.

"You are not going anywhere." She says glaring at him.

"Actually I am."

"You owe our parents to at least help us" Tess says.

"I owe your parents nothing." Haymitch starts walking out of the room.

"My mother is now afraid of water because of you. Peeta now has his episodes and wants to kill Katniss. If it wasn't for you leaving them for the Capitol to get they would fine." Tess argues. Haymitch turns back around.

"If it wasn't for me your mother probably would have died in the games. If I hadn't have helped in the plan to get any of your parents out then they would all probably be dead." This shuts Tess up. Haymitch walks towards the door.

"That is why you need to help us. We want to survive these games like our parents did and you can help us." Haymitch doesn't turn around. "Please Haymitch." Slowly he turns back around. He sighs.

"Ok fine I will help; but on one condition."

"What's that?" Sam asks.

"You must do everything I say." We all nod. "Even if you don't like it or disagree with me." Again we all nod. Haymitch sits back down. "Ok first thing is that you have to let Aiden-."

"No." Sam says before Haymitch can finish his sentence. "I don't want him in the alliance."

"Well you have no choice." Haymitch says. "Now that Aiden kissed Ashleigh everyone will expect them to be together."

"But she didn't want to be kissed" Sam says. "She should have a choice."

"Unfortunately that's not how this works."

"Well it should."

"Why don't we take a vote?" Nathaniel says speaking up.

"Stay out of this." Sam says.

"I think that's a good idea." I say. As much as I hate the idea of him being in the alliance and having to pretend to like him I don't see any other option. I hope that most people vote against having him in the alliance.

"Fine we will vote. All in favour of having Aiden in the alliance put your hand up." Haymitch says while raising his hand. Nathaniel, Nathaniel's mentor, Tess, Tessa's mentor, Finnick and his mentor all put their hands up. Sam and I are the only ones who don't. "It's settled then, Aiden is in the alliance." Sam gets up from his chair and walks towards the elevator without saying a word. I get up and follow him. The elevator has already left and I watch it go all the way up to the roof. I call for the elevator and go up to the roof. When I'm there I see Sam sitting on one of the benches looking down at the Capitol and I go sit next to him. It's silent for a while and I don't say anything. I want him to talk first.

"Why did you follow me?" He asks after a while.

"To make sure you were ok and to find out why you ran off."

"I'm fine." He mumbles. "I just don't want him in the alliance."

"That's obvious, but why are you so upset about it."

"I don't trust him."

"What's the other reason?" I ask.

"There is no other reason. I don't trust him so I don't want him in the alliance."

"Don't lie to me. You didn't act like this when Nathaniel was joining. Yes you hate him and don't trust him but you never acted like this." Sam doesn't say anything; he doesn't even look me in the eye. "Sam?" He whispers something so quietly that I think I hear him wrong. "What did you say?" I ask stunned, he couldn't have said what I thought he said. He turns to look me in the eye.

"Don't make me say it again."

"Please, I swear I didn't hear you."

"I-I love you Lee. I have ever since we were little and I can't stand it when you are around other guys." Sam looks away from me. Now I'm really stunned, so he did say it. He did say that he loves me. I don't know how to respond. Obviously when someone says they love you you're supposed to tell them you love them. This is Sam though, my best friend. I don't know if I love him. "Lee please say something." I try desperately to think of something to say but I can't think of anything. Do I love Sam or do I not love Sam? Could I or could I not live without him? Can I think of anyone else who I have ever loved? Who I have ever been as close to? No I can't, but I've never had any thoughts of loving Sam. He gets up and walks away and I don't make any attempt to stop him.
