Chapter 14: Elijah's Birthday
Today is my oldest brother's birthday. He is tucked away in bed and it is ten o'clock on a Saturday. Mother made him breakfast but he was asleep when she went up. I kept walking by the door, cracking it open to peek in and then close it, again, quietly. It wasn't like Elijah to sleep in like this and at ten I was sick of waiting. Opening the door, I walked inside and laid down beside him. "Lijah," I whispered.
Elijah opened one blood shut eye and blinked at me. "Too loud," he groaned.
"Are you okay, brother?" I whispered as quietly as possible. Elijah wasn't able to answer before a little blonde girl and little brunette boy hopped onto the bed with us.
"Elijah. Elijah." Kol and Rebekah squealed at Elijah, who scrambled out of the bed and ran for his bathroom. We could hear the sounds of Elijah throwing up into the toilet. That was strange because as far as I knew he hadn't had anything to eat.
Walking over to the bathroom, I stepped inside and I closed the door behind me so Bekah and Kol could not follow. I did not want them to see our brother like this for some reason. "Niklaus, I need you to go to our parents' room and collect the Advil and bring me a glass of water. Please." Elijah said as he leaned his head against the bathtub.
"Are you sick, Lijah?" I asked him.
Elijah nodded and then grabbed his head. "Yes. Hurry. Please, Niklaus." I sped out of the bathroom and into our parents' room as quietly as possible.
"Klaus, what are you doing?" Finn asked me, folding his arms over his chest as he gave me that eternally skeptical look.
"Lijah's sick. He asked me to get him this and a glass of water." I informed Finn as I shoved the bottle into my jeans pocket.
Finn's look changed from one of suspicion to one of concern. "I'll get the water. You go back to Elijah. Maybe I should bring him something to eat."
"He was vomiting," I told Finn as we walked down the hall. Stopping in front of the door to Elijah's room, Finn thought about what to do next. "Crackers. Some Saltines might settle his stomach a bit." He hurried down the stairs as I walked back into Elijah's room.
"What's wrong with Elijah?" Kol asked. He was sitting in front of the bathroom door with his favorite toy, a stuffed replica of Babe Ruth. Bekah had her favorite blanket, one given to her by Elijah for her second birthday. It had all her favorite fairy tale princesses on it. She was sucking her thumb. I watched her, frowning. I hadn't seen her do that in a while.
"Elijah's not feeling well today." I told them as Finn walked in the bedroom.
Rebekah pulled her thumb out with a popping noise. "What's wrong?"
"He's hung over." Finn told us as he eased the door open and walked inside with a box of crackers and a glass of water.
I pulled out the Advil out and handed it to Finn, who uncapped the bottle and handed Elijah a pill. Elijah took the pill with a slight smile. His hand shook slightly as he picked up the glass of water. Placing the little pill between his lips, he gulped down some water and sighed.
"I brought you some crackers. If you think you can keep anything down right now." Finn told Elijah as he slid down next to his older brother. I sat down in front of them.
Rebekah held out her blanket. "In case you're cold," She whispered.
"Or you're scared of the monster in the basement," Kol extended Babe Ruth to Elijah. "He'll keep you safe with his Louisville slugger."
Elijah smiled and pulled Rebekah and Kol onto his lap. "I'm feeling better. I promise. Just don't scream today. Please."
"Okay." They agreed. We sat there in silence for a bit before I needed to know why Elijah was hung over and what that meant exactly.
"Lijah was invited for a pre-birthday party by Katherine…" Finn began quietly.
"And there were some kids from the high school who came, as well," Elijah added.
"They brought beer," Finn told us.
"And Katherine dared me to have a drink." Elijah informed us as he shook his head and then groaned.
"I was there with Sage but I refused to drink. And I dared Sage not to drink, too. Let's just say she was not happy with me." Finn rolled his eyes as he spoke.
"It seemed like a rather lively party and drinking wasn't so bad until I couldn't walk straight. I barely made it up the stairs with the help of Sage and Finn. I'm only satisfied with the fact that Katherine was in worse shape when we escorted her home. Her head is undoubtedly hovering over the toilet bowl as we speak."
"My head is where?" Katherine asked with a wide smirk as she came to lean in the doorway.
Elijah's jaw hung open. "How?" Getting to his feet, he began to sway. "How are you still standing up?" He took a shaky step toward her.
"Do you really think that was my first drink?" Katherine scoffed as she walked over and flopped onto Elijah's bed like she owned it.
"Well, I was hoping it was," Elijah told her as Sage walked into the bedroom and Katherine rolled her eyes.
"Who invited her?" Katherine asked as she glared at Sage, who acted like Katherine wasn't there.
"Hey, Lijah. How are you holding up?" Sage looked concerned as she took in how pale Elijah was.
"I've been better. Thank you," Elijah told her.
"Why don't you worry about your own boyfriend?" Katherine snapped. "I can take care of Elijah."
Sage whirled around. "Oh, really? Like how you took care of him last night? You got him drunk, Kat, and he could have gotten hurt. But I forgot. It's all about you." Shaking her head in disgust Sage walked out of the room as the doorbell rang downstairs.
Elijah walked slowly toward his bedroom door to be greeted by Damon. "Hey, Lijah!" he yelled, causing Elijah to grab his head and groan.
"Are you okay?" Damon asked, more subdued this time as his eyebrows crinkled in worry.
"I'm fine, Damon," Elijah told Damon as he tried to smile.
"Good. Because I brought your birthday present." Damon rubbed his hands together in anticipation. "You can come in now." He called to someone. We were all surprised when a thin girl with long dark hair and large eyes walked into the room. "Elijah Mikaelson meet your pen pal, Hayley Marshall." Damon announced proudly.
Elijah's eyes went wide. "Hayley?"
"Hi, Elijah." Hayley said, shyly as she walked toward him slowly. He quickly covered the distance and hugged her tightly.
"I can't believe you are really here." Elijah said as he pulled back and looked at her with a wide grin which was probably painful.
Katherine certainly looked like she was in pain. But she simply crossed her arms over her chest. "Well, I guess she's a big, fat, liar. I mean you can't be that poor if you can afford a plane ticket when you're a kid."
Before anyone else could say anything Hayley flicked her gaze over to Katherine. "So, you must be the girlfriend I've been hearing so much about. Sorry to burst your bubble, honey, but Damon bought the plane ticket. And I guess the rumor is right, you are a mega bitch. But you know what? That's okay because I don't deal well with drama. So, I'm going downstairs with my friend, Elijah to celebrate his birthday. If you want to come with us, do, if you don't, don't."
With that said Hayley took Elijah's hand and pulled him out the door. Katherine glared at the doorway as Damon began to laugh hysterically. I grabbed him by a fist full of his shirt and shoved him out the door. Kol and Bekah followed us down the stairs along with a sulking Katherine.
"Happy birthday, Lijah!" Andie called as she entered the house with a gift. Sitting it down on a side table she greeted my brother with a hug.
Jenna, Alaric and Mason followed Andie into the house. "Elijah," Mason called as he clapped my brother on the back. "Happy beginning of the trauma that is called being a teenager."
Elijah shook his head as he hugged Alaric and kissed Jenna on the cheek. "Hello, I am thrilled you could all make it."
We made our way over to the Great Room and sat down as Anna came in with Elijah's cake. "Hey, birthday boy," she called with a wide grin. "Are you ready to blow out your candles?"
Just as Elijah sat down to make a wish, Caroline came racing in and plopped down next to me. "Good. I didn't miss anything." She whispered into my ear. Elijah smiled at me as he blew his candles out.
"Lijah, I dare you to eat your cake doing a headstand!" Damon told Elijah, who rolled his eyes.
"Since it is my birthday and you can only pass once… and I might throw up if I try that… Damon will you take my dare." Elijah asked Damon with a slow smile.
Damon paled slightly as everyone looked at him. "Looks like someone knows how to dish it out but can't take it." Katherine murmured with a smile.
Damon turned to glare at Katherine and then began to smirk. "I invite you to join me, Kat, in a headstand cake eating contest. The winner has to smell the loser's socks."
Katherine gulped as she looked back at Damon. "I'll take the dare," Hayley announced causing Katherine to stare at her.
"Excuse me?" Katherine asked as she examined Hayley for signs of deception. She was surprised to find none. "If you insist…"
Getting up, Hayley joined Damon in the middle the floor for the cake eating contest. Alaric stood behind Damon to make sure he didn't fall over as Mason did the same for Hayley.
Caroline joined me as the two people who would be holding the plates for the cake eaters. Caroline began to giggle as Damon smushed his face into the plate getting more cake on his face than in his mouth. I sighed, watching my friend try to lick the bits of cake off of his cheeks.
Hayley seemed to br having a better time as Caroline aimed the cake carefully under the other girl's head. I found it odd that Hayley did not seem to mind how silly she looked or that her hair was becoming covered in icing. Caroline ran to grab another piece while Damon yelled at me to get another.
Running over to the table, I collected a plate to find Anna sitting on the couch shaking her head. "You kids are crazy. But you look like you're having fun." Looking over at my family and friends who were cheering as Hayley gobbled cake and Damon yelled at me to move faster before he sent me back to "Merry Old England" I felt a sense of pride for our group.
"Cake!" Damon screamed causing Elijah to place his hands over his ears. Katherine came up behind him and began to massage his temples. He visibly relaxed as I ran over to give Damon the cake while Caroline ran for Hayley's third slice.
"Hayley won!" Bekah yelled.
Kol ignored the shouts back and forth as he attempted to scoop up cake off the floor and eat it. Anna plucked him up off the floor and sat him down on the couch beside her with a slice of cake.
Elijah sat down on a chair with Katherine curling up against him. "Happy birthday, Lijah." She cooed as she pressed her lips to his. I gagged as did Damon.
"Smell my socks, Salvatore." Hayley called as she pulled her shoes off. Damon reluctantly came over and sniffed.
"Girl's do sweat." Damon announced as he wrinkled his nose and stuck his tongue out.
"Are you going to open your presents, Elijah?" Anna asked my brother.
Elijah shrugged, looking around him. "I don't need to know what you got me because all I need is your presence and I am content."
Present:
I lay in bed listening to them talking. Its Elijah's birthday and Caroline would kill me if she knew I was lying here awake.
"What do you think he's dreaming about?" Katherine asks the group as she bounces little Niklaus Mikael Mikaelson on her knee. The two year old grabs at her hair in response and tugs.
"I don't know." Elijah replies as he rests his head on top of his wife's and intertwines their fingers.
Caroline comes in looking wary but forces a wide smile. "Happy birthday, Elijah. I'm sorry, I wasn't able to get you something better. The gift shop here sucks." Holding out a small bag, she hands it to my brother or at least that is what I imagine happens as I hear him thank her.
Opening the bag, Elijah peers inside. "Umm.. The Notebook… how thoughtful of you… Caroline." Smiling, Elijah hugged Caroline, who groaned.
"The gift sucks," Caroline placed her head in her hands.
"Good thing mine doesn't." Damon announced as he came in with a very pregnant Elena. "Happy birthday, big brother." Damon grinned as he handed Elijah the bag. Elena rolled her eyes as Elijah opened the bag.
Pulling out a bottle of champagne, Elijah began to grin. Elena shook her head. "Here's my gift." She handed him a wrapped package.
Unwrapping the gift with the help of his little boy, Elijah began to chuckle. "So, he finally did it." He began to shake his head. The book was titled The Complete History of Mystic Falls. Turning the book over Elijah grinned at the picture of Stefan Salvatore.
"Stefan wanted to be here but he and Hayley are stuck in New York due to a plane delay…"
"Fortunately I caught an early flight no thanks to this," Rebekah strode in pointing an accusatory finger at Kol. "He decided to join the mile high club… Again, and nearly got us thrown off the plane."
Kol shook his head. "I was not the true reason. It was Bekah's constant complaining. She spent half the time e-mailing Stefan and asking if he had found Ronald's teething ring and if Lily was washed up for bed."
"Every time I leave him with the children he forgets something or lets them stay up far too late." Rebekah protested.
"What did you bring your brother for his birthday?" Katherine asked them coolly as she patted Niky's back who was standing on her leg.
Kol and Rebekah stared at each other with the same look of apprehension; neither wanted to deal with Katherine's temper. "Ourselves..." Kol replied, shrugging with a grin.
"Yes, that has always been enough for me." Elijah told our siblings as he hugged them.
"Happy birthday, Elijah," Kol and Rebekah told him.
I decided to make my presence known and sat up slightly as Damon came over to me. "Hello there, mate," he said quietly as he pushed a pillow behind my back and Caroline watched over the process with a slight frown.
"Don't look so glum, sweetheart. It's a party," I told my wife, who rolled her eyes but smiled. I held out my arms. "Come here, Niky." I called to my namesake as Katherine placed the boy in my lap. "And Elena, shall you be delivering the child here in my room?"
Elena shook her head and smiled, pressing her hand to her stomach. "Any time now."
"Think of it, the baby can be born on Elijah's birthday," Damon announced as he wrapped his arms around Elena. "We can name him after Lijah."
"Uh huh," Elena replied. "But she's a girl. And she's going to be named after Caroline and my Mom."
"Happy birthday, brother." I told Elijah as we ignored the bickering and Elijah took my hand and squeezed it.
"Thank you, Niklaus."
