Chapter Fourteen

It was much worse than the scream of the wild dog. It was the scream of a human throat. Two human throats. Humperdinck had rushed into the cage where Jenna and Westley lay recovering from the Machine and glared at Westley. "She still loves you!" He said to him. "She still loves you and you love her, so think of how happy you could have been!" He turned to Jenna. "And you had friendship and passion for creativity! If any of those stories about you were true, then you could have also had a power beyond anyone's understanding. Where are your powers now? Where's the love now?" He grabbed the dial on the Machine and cranked it as high as it would go: to fifty years of life. Then the death scream began.

Buttercup heard it in her chambers and it frightened her.

Lulu heard it while she was dangling out the window, panicked, let go of her rope, and dropped to the ground. Once she had collected most of her wits and strength, she sprinted in the direction of the Thieves Quarter.

Alicia, Inigo, and Fezzik heard the scream, and Inigo knew immediately what it was. "Do you hear that?" He said to Alicia and Fezzik. "Do you know what that is? It is the sound of Ultimate Suffering! I know that sound! It was the sound I made when the count slaughtered my father and the man in black makes it now!"

"If that's Westley...then Jenna's in danger, too!" Alicia gasped.

"How do you know it's Westley?" Fezzik wondered. He scooped Alicia up in his large arms when he sensed that she was going to faint. Alicia didn't faint, but all of the feeling left her legs.

"Who else would make that sound on this wedding night? We need to get to the Zoo now! Fezzik, make a path, please!" Inigo begged.

"EVERYONE MOVE!" Fezzik boomed. All of the people who stood in the way of the odd company froze, looked at Fezzik, and backed away to form a path. Fezzik and Inigo moved through the path, followed by Alicia, and then Lulu arrived, sweaty and gasping for air.

"Buttercup called Humperdinck a coward," she choked out. "And then he went to the Zoo of Death...Buttercup and I were locked up in her room, but I got out to find you...help me, please…"

"We were already on our way," Alicia told her, and they continued with great urgency to the Zoo. But when they were closer to the palace, they saw the Albino with a wheelbarrow by a rather large tree.

"I'm having the devil's own trouble tracking that scream!" Inigo declared, and suddenly the tip of his sword was at the Albino's throat. "Where is the man in black?" He demanded.

The Albino shook his head. "I know no man in black."

"Did the scream come from there?" Inigo pointed to the large tree. Alicia walked towards it and ran her hands over the trunk...then she felt a knot, which she pushed on. When enough pressure was applied, part of the trunk swung away to reveal the entrance to the deadly Zoo of Death.

"Quiet him, Fezzik," Inigo said, and Fezzik stepped forward and brought his fist down on the Albino's head. The Albino stumbled for a bit before collapsing in his own wheelbarrow.

"Maybe one of us should stay here and make sure the Albino doesn't get away…" Lulu suggested, suddenly dreading the idea of entering the Zoo. Inigo pulled on her arm.

"Don't be frightened. We won't be in there for very long."

Two hours later…

"I feel squeamish," Fezzik admitted to Alicia after escaping the fourth floor. "I've never seen Inigo lose control like that."

"My brave fighter screamed like a little girl!" Lulu giggled. Inigo scowled and Lulu raised an eyebrow. "What? The door slammed shut and you were like, 'DON'T BE FRIGHTENED!'"

"Like you were any calmer on the second floor! Honestly, the second!" Inigo shot back. "It was just spiders."

"That's no excuse for how you talked to Fezzik!" Alicia interrupted, holding her giant's arm. She leaned forward and hissed in the Spaniard's ear, "If you ever talk to him like that again, you're DEAD. Got it?"

"Oh, hey, look, we're here," Inigo said in a weak, light voice. It was the entrance to the fifth level. He pushed open the door and the group stepped inside. This was the most well-lit room, but it only had one large cage...and in that cage were the two sleeping bodies of Westley and Jenna! Fezzik used his mighty fist and broke the door of the cage. He stepped inside and picked up the two bodies. Then he announced:

"They're both dead…"

Lulu froze. "No, you're lying. Jenna's not dead," she said. Then she started to scream. Alicia got on her knees and started sobbing her eyes out, unable to handle the news. They kept wailing and screaming and bawling for what felt like hours...then Inigo approached the bodies and said:

"I do not accept this. I do not accept the death of a young girl, and I do not accept the death of the man in black. What we need now is a miracle."

Then Lulu's eyes widened. "You don't mean...a miracle man?"

Inigo nodded. "Miracle Max will help us. We have to find him, and quickly...the wedding is in only a few hours."

JENNA IS NOT DEAD IN THIS STORY...she's mostly dead. Max will fix it!
