Fell For Her Song

Chapter 14

Outrageous

"Bubblegum! Bubblegum!" Marceline shouted as she crashed through the door of Marshall's house.

"Hey, be careful-!"

"Shut up, where's Peebles!?" Marceline yelled after she had seen that the house was empty.

"She's going to the Candy Kingdom!"

"Are you fucking serious!? I was just there!" Marceline cried in frustration. She ripped the door back open and zipped out.

"HEY YOU STOLE MY HOODIE ah forget it..." Marshall said, sighing.

Marceline scanned the Candy Kingdom, desperately looking for a giant head of bubblegum pink hair. After checking the homes of the candy people, Marceline zipped to the castle in rubble. There, a crowded huddled close together over something.

Marceline didn't have the time to stick around to see what was going on, though.

"Peebles!" Marcelie cried from the sky before she descended quickly and landed right in front of Bubblegum.

"Hey, I'm trying to do something here!" Bubblegum exclaimed frustrated and glaring directly at Marceline's glowing eyes under the dark hoodie. "Oh, it's you." PB sneered.

"Please don't be like that right now Bonni..."

"Don't call me that. Only my friends can call me that."

Marceline let a frustrated grunt. "Please! I need your help!" Marceline said, pulling Bubblegum to a dark corner.

"Marceline! I thought you didn't want my 'support' or whatever that means."

"Ugh! Can we talk about that at a different time!? This is important!"

"Yeah, well, I'm also dealing with something important right now, Marceline. Please, I'm sure you can save it," Bubblegum said before turning and muttering under her breath, "...unlike this kingdom." Marceline sneered.

"Fine. You asked for it."

"What did you s- MARCELINE ABADEER! WHAT THE COFFEE BEANS!?" Bubblegum screamed as Marceline tore her hair from above her neck and below and flew away with it. Her hands flew to her suddenly shorter hair as she watched Marceline quickly zooming into the distance with her hair.

"You! Ohhhh! You are going to pay Marceline!" Bubblegum screamed into the sky out of pure rage. "Ohh- ho- ho! When I'm done with that flubber face she is gonna be sooooo-soooo-"

"Bubblegum! I think we have a problem!" Fionna cried, pointing at the glowing green pile of charred candy.

"Bubba!" Marceline cried, pushing through the heavy door to Gumball's Emergency Room.

"Wow she gave you a lot of hair!" Gumball exclaimed, looking down at the hair with wide eyes.

"Uhm, yea... Let's get on with the operation now!" Marceline cried holding the hair a little higher into the air.

"Yes, of course!" Gumball said, forcing a smile. He walked over to the side table of the hospital bed and picked up the phone. He hesitantly picked it up, his finger lingering over the numbers.

"Gumball?" Marceline asked. Gumball put the phone back down and looked away from her. "Gumball, what's wrong? You've gotta get better now!"

"I don't know, Marceline. I'm just worried about what would happen after the operation..." Gumball said, sitting down on the bed.

"What do you mean? What would be different?" Marceline asked, sitting next to Gumball with the hair folded over her arms.

"I-I don't know. You seem really... really... distant. I feel like you aren't telling me everything..." Gumball said, placing his hands behind him and leaning on them. He looked into Marceline's eyes as if looking for something.

Marceline broke the stare by looking down at the hair in her lap. "Gumball I'll- we'll still be together after the operation. We're just fixing your ribs. And your leg if we can..." Marceline looked down at his leg in its cast. She held back the cringe she felt when she saw his purple toes. She saw his other bruised up leg. It was only now that Marceline was strong enough to really look at the injuries.

"Yes... of course..." Gumball said in the distance. Marceline wasn't trying to, but she could imagine what exactly what was going down for him to get these injuries. Her father was relentless. She scanned over his arms before her eyes finally landed on his neck. She froze. Her breathing hitched.

Gumball had a perfect count of ten fingerprint-sized bruises around his neck. How could Gumball forgive her after that? She immediately regretted saying they'd stay together. They'd only known each other five days before her father decided the 'relationship' was going too out of hand. They weren't even technically a couple yet and there had already been so much destruction.

"Marceline?" Gumball said, pulling her out of her dark thoughts. Tears jumped into her eyes, ready to flow over her lids.

"I'm so sorry, Bubba..." Marceline whispered, outstretching a hand to gently hover over the bruises. She couldn't even touch his face because it was so bruised.

"It wasn't your fault..."

"Yes it was!" Marceline shouted, sending her tears over the brink. "Ugh!" She screamed in frustrated, pushing the hair out of her hands so she could wipe furiously at the tears. "I hate this crying," She muttered.

"Me, too..." Gumball said, watching her cry. It was painful to watch her be so sad for him. He grabbed her hand and kissed her knuckles. "Don't cry, pretty girl."

Marceline gave out a shaky laugh as she wiped the last of her tears away. "Sorry, I'm just... Oh Glob, I'm so sorry! I can't believe this ever happened to you..." She stared at his wounds in horror. This was all her fault. She knew she should leave. Marceline hovered over his head so that she could kiss him on the forehead. Gumball closed his eyes, leaning in. As her lips pressed softly against his forehead, Gumball let out a sigh of content. He pulled away, holding her face in his hands. She lowered her body and stood on the floor. Gumball wiped a finger over her lips, staring at them intensely.

He glanced into her eyes briefly before crashing his lips against her's. She closed her eyes and relished in the feeling of his lips. It was like looking down on the earth after flying to the moon. It was so exhilarating and perfect and beautiful. She smiled halfway into the kiss, chuckling slightly as his hands rested on her hips. Her hands quickly found their way to his body and she grasped his shoulders.

As if Gumball had just been stricken by electricity, his hands stiffened and he jerked back. A look of terror flashed before his eyes before he clutched his shoulders tenderly.

"Oh my Glob, Gumball! I'm so sorry!" Marceline shouted, instantly putting space between them. She hovered close to the door, ready to leave.

"No, Marceline! It doesn't even hurt that bad," Gumball besought. "Please... stay? Come back."

Marceline stared at him for a moment, aghast. "Stay?" She whispered, her voice stinging like ice. Gumball smiled, "Yes! Stay!" He reached a hand out to her.

"Stay?" She repeated evermore harshly. Gumball pushed his brows together, pulling his hand back to him. "How could you say that?" Marceline hissed.

"I don't understand," Gumball said, shaking his head. Marceline opened her mouth to shout at him before retracting her words and balled her hands into fists.

"Have you seen your reflection lately?" Marceline grunted through gritted teeth. Gumball looked at her offended. "Excuse you?" Gumball said. Marceline rolled her eyes before ripping the mirror from the medicine cabinet. A couple of bottles fell out and landed in the sink. Marceline held the mirror up to eye level in front of Gumball. She watched his reaction sadly.

His eyes widened as he examined his purple and blue body. He stared at himself for a moment before he took a double-take at Marceline's face. Her heart was falling apart and it was obvious by the expression on her face. He pushed the mirror down and sighed.

"You think I care? You didn't do this to me," Gumball said indignantly.

"How could you be so blind to the future? Say you get the operation. Say we get together afterwards, and we stay together. The fact that this could happen again is... is... terrifying!" Marceline yelled exasperated. "How are you not scared?" She shook her head at the bruised and battered, and annoyingly loyal, candy prince sitting on the bed before her. Gumball pouted stubbornly. Marceline took a breath, picked up the phone, and dialed the doctor. After explaining the plan to him, the doctor took Gumball, and the candy hair, into the operating room.

Marceline sighed as she watched them leave. She kicked a bottle of pills that rolled off of the counter before making her way to the exit. She wasn't going to stay.
