Round 13: Almost 200 Miles of Racing on the Nordschleife
"No, seriously, fifteen laps where?!" Peach asked the crowded garage area at Suzuka Circuit in Japan. The announcement of round thirteen taking place at the Nürburgring Nordschleife had stunned the forty-eight racers into silence, which Peach had broken about a minute and a half prior.
"Are those guys serious? Fifteen laps on a nearly thirteen mile circuit? That's almost two hundred miles of racing we're gonna be doing. At least they're giving double points to all who manage to finish the fifteen laps running." Neil said. Then Wes heard Jet whisper something into his teammate Anise's ear.
"Fifty says something happens to Peach and Daisy knocking them out of the race on lap one."
"Oh, yeah, Jet? Well, a hundred says half the field is out by lap eight." Wes responded. This triggered Ella to react.
"Two hundred on four or fewer finishers. Triple or nothing."
"Four hundred on someone's kart leaving the circuit and running into a tree." Zoey retorted.
"Thousand on a gap of at least a minute over second place at the finish." came Luigi's response.
"Three thousand says someone ends up on the GP circuit at some point. 17:1 odds." Rui got into the wackiness. Neil retorted next.
"Seven thousand seven hundred seventy-seven, at 7:1 odds, on the 259 being a finisher. Bungie reference due to seven being their favorite number."
"Figured someone would pull that off eventually." Carter said, before adding, "Twenty thousand says someone's kart ignites from a wreck."
"Full million on a multi-kart wreck Niki Lauda-style from 1976. 109:1 odds." Shelly, from the seats, yelled down. Nobody responded after that, after which the twenty-four karts and their drivers, two per kart, warped to the nightmarish Green Hell in Germany.
"Hello, everybody, and welcome to the Zeo LS Racing Network as we prepare for what is likely by far the longest race of the tournament. Fifteen laps on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. This is a true test of endurance for these karts as they'll be covering nearly two hundred miles on this 12.9 mile circuit, with double points on the line for all finishers. A bunch of the racers made bets between themselves on likely results, such as high attrition, a large gap between the winner and second place, a likely finisher in the 259 kart via Neil pulling a Bungie reference, and potential wrecks. Jet, of the points-leading 07, started it all on a meager fifty to his teammate, and it ended on a 109:1 odds bet of a reenactment of a 1976 race wreck that almost claimed a Formula One driver's life from Shelly, who's already won a surprise bet that was wreck-related on the 29 exploding during the DK Jungle race. Rui believes someone's gonna mess up in turn 6 and end up on the GP circuit, Zoey guesses someone's gonna hit a tree, and Carter thinks there's gonna be a fiery wreck at some point. The racers are at the starting line, now let's begin the racing. T minus five seconds." Burter said from the commentary booth. Five seconds later the pack was off and racing. Though the 29 got yet another Chrono Start, Peach and Daisy took off with a new type of Rocket Start; deep crimson flames blazed out of the exhaust of the 29 kart as they zoomed so far down the long starting straight that they ended up slamming through the barrier in Turn 6 and found themselves on the 3.22 mile Grand Prix course.
"Well, there's Rui's wager won right there as a new type of Rocket Start propels Peach and Daisy right through the Turn 6 outside barrier, earning her fifty-one thousand bucks on a 17:1 odds 3K wager. That's gonna cost the 29 at least a few positions." That statement by Jeice proved to be an understatement; trying to line up the next corner Daisy activated a new Eclipse Mushroom - which the resulting boost eliminated them via collision with a tree, earning Jet and Zoey their wagers. Everyone else survived lap one, and then as the pack entered the Bergwerk corner the 40 kart of Jessie and James suddenly veered right, hitting an earth bank and returning to the track, kart ablaze, claiming the 3 (who spun out trying to miss the blazing kart), the 257, and the 15 (both of who hit the 40); all four karts dropped out of the race due to the wreck that earned Shelly and Carter their bets.
"Of the nine bets that were placed between eight racers and a fan before this race, four are still active as the 29's lap one wreck into a tree that ended their race clinched the bets of Jet and Zoey, while a lap 2 crash reminiscent of the 1976 wreck experienced by Niki Lauda in the Formula One race held here involving the 40 kart as the blazing initial wrecker, with the 3 spinning out in an evasive maneuver while the 257 and 15 both hit the 40 cinched the wagers of Shelly and Carter. Wes' wager of half the field gone by halfway, Ella's wager of at most four finishers, Luigi's bet of a one-minute-plus gap margin between the top two finishers, and Neil's guess that the 259, Carter's team, finishes are still active. We have thirteen laps to go before this one's over, and round fourteen will be at Luigi Circuit 1." Burter announced to the spectators. By lap six only eleven karts were still running; a multi-kart wreck took out the 79, the 70, the 77, and the 45 on lap 3, the 33 and 107 karts experienced engine failures twenty seconds apart on lap 4, and Zoey's team suffered suspension damage on a botched pit stop for fuel issues early into lap 5. Both Kong teams fell to engine failures on lap seven, twenty seconds apart; the 03 of Funky Kong's team ended twenty-six feet ahead of Donkey Kong's 55. Lap eight eliminated Neil and Ella when fuel issues took them out halfway across the track from the pits, which caused Giselle and Rosa to wreck when they got sideways trying to pass the stalled 205. Matt and Jeff then lost their engine on lap nine in a plume of smoke that caused Wario and Waluigi to crash ten feet behind them. Koopa Troopa and Paratroopa then wrecked entering turn 39 at almost the same time the Mario Bros. wrecked twelve corners ahead of them. The 95 and 97 karts would then wreck on lap 12, twenty corners apart, leaving Jet and Anise to cruise along to the victory as they were up by eleven minutes on Carter and Kat, who reduced that gap to a quarter of what it had been upon finishing the race.

"Carter and Kat are lucky this tournament continues after the next race, at Luigi Circuit 1, 'cause otherwise Jet and Anise would have this tournament's top spot all wrapped up. Also, all nine pre-race bets by the racers and fan Shelly end up netting the bettors their money as only two karts, Jet and Anise in the 07 and SPARTAN-IIIs Carter and Kat in the 259, finished the hundred ninety-three and a half miles of racing still running, two and a quarter minutes separating Jet's team from Carter's to net Luigi his money, the 259 finishing netting Neil his, only two finishers earning Ella hers, and eleven racers left by lap 6, two laps before halfway, clinching Wes' bet. We'll see you next time at Luigi Circuit 1. Until then, this is the Zeo LS Racing Network."
