After a few minutes of walking in lower and lower into the sewers, it was quiet. Marian expected more of a din with gaggles of poor streaming to and from the mine. Soon the answer became obvious as to why.
"You think you can kill my men and get away with it, elf?" the leader thug threaten Fenris and came with end arms length. "And look a little girl and Qunari in the sewers. It must be my lucky day. Those horned freaks and little girls are always popular in the slave market, but you elf your mine" At that Fenris growled.
"I am no one's slave!" the elf glowing blue quickly reached into the leader and pulled out the thug's still beating heart. Surprise was permanently etched on the leader's face as he fell over. This time however the group of thugs was not as timid. They all quickly rushed them. Fenris quickly mowed down the first three in front of him, but Marian did not fair as well. Separated from the elf's protection, archers amoung the thugs decided to neturalise her and Ketojan. She threw a vapor to freeze the ground causing the thugs to slip and fail at flanking Fenris. Next she discovered an arrow in her right arm and Ketojan's left side. The qunari mage had shielded her from the rain of arrows before waving his left arm and causing an explosion of force at the archers. Ketojan did not stop he sent out a fire ball that wiped out the reinforcements and left Fenris staggering back out of the way. Growling something in Tevinter, Fenris who was still glowing looked ready to attack Ketojan.
Marian tried to called them to halt, but they were still under attack; more thieves and thugs were appearing. However, the thugs ran right past them and down the tunnel to the surface.
Maraas appeared chasing the stragglers away.
"Not even worth the fight." the mercenary giant scoffed. "A saarebas?" Fenris explained about there mission and the giant grew more and more grievous. Marian looked over wounded arm trying to work around the arrow. Ketojan placed a glowing hand on her injured arm and yanked out the arrow with the other. "Marian hissed in pain but saw that the wound had been healed. The mage did not made not effort to do the same for himself. Marian ordered him to show her his side as she applied a potion to numb the pain. The Saarebas watched her blankly as if confused by the care.
"I would not trust the sister. Today, we killed all that remained of the Tal-Vashoth. This Saarebas is of the qun."
Fenris mulled over this unhappily. "All of them?"Marian inquired.
"They were my brothers." Maraas admitted to knowing the Tal-vashoth intimately. Ketojan growled at this. Marian ordered him to stop fearful that he would provoked to light another fire again. The ground was still smouldering with his last blast, but the mage giant was hushed.
"The sister story is false?" Marian asked the other giant. "What is our plan then?"
"We are not going to the outside." the elf announced. "It is waste of time."
Marian and Ketojan looked at each other before Marian inquired why. "A saarebas will not ever leave the qun. They know nothing else."
Fenris readied his sword. "I will end his suffering."
"Wait!" Marian tried to stop Fenris and at least have him explain. "I don't understand." However, that did not stop Fenris from lunging his sword into exposed vitals. Ketojan, who did not move out of the way fell on his knees. The giant was content to slowly bleed out. "No!" She rushed to the mage's side. The blood was spilling to quickly and the blood pushed way any potion Marian tried to pour on his wounds. "Shit! Shit! Shit!" Marian cried. The Mage's hands cradled hers making her hands feel tiny and even more helpless.
"I will die of the qun." Ketojan hoarsely whispered. The giant sounded pleased. "You lead well, but it is too late for me. Beware the sister, she is shrouded in lies."
Inside of her hand, the giant placed some sort of carved pendant in her hand. "Take this secret thing."
That was the giant's last words as he slumped over and died.
"He spoke to you." Maraas darkly asked Marain "Saarebas words are be dangerous."
Wiping tears from her eyes which continued to pour despite her attempts to stop, Marian replied."I am not afraid."
"Maybe you should. Mages poison everything." Fenris bitter spat the words before sighing into frustration. "No matter were I go, magic hunts me in some way."
"Isn't your glowing attack thing magic?" Marian asked. Fenris's mood somehow darken even more. "No my power comes from the tattoos, seared on my flesh against my will."
"Marian!" a familiar voices called out and echoed down the sewers. "Marian!"
"Carver! Garrett!" Marian called back to her searching brothers. They came toward her voice and a upon their arrival pulled out their weapons. "Let our sister go!" Carver ordered. Maraas and Fenris defensively kept their weapons, confused as Marian darted to Garrett comforting arms. "I am alright. They saved me." She told her brothers. Garrett hugged Marian tightly.
"Then you have our thanks." The eldest Hawke told the mercenaries before turning to his sister. "What were you doing down here this late?"
"A sister sent me on an errand." Marian answered. Garrett looked at Maraas and Fenris for a moment and knew that Garrett was up to something as the air near her mage brother before he broke to a smile."We were are going to have a long talk later. I will buy you a round drinks at the Hanged Man if you are interested." Garrett informed the mercenaries before dragging Marian home. Interested in the offer, Fenris and Maraas followed after the Hawkes.
"Right now, Mother is worried sick since Loyalty came home alone. He barking so much that pissed off Gamlen." Garrett told his sister as they left the sewers.
We thought you had fallen down a well." Carver said jovially before adding a bit more angrily. "Prepare for being grounded for, let's say the next century."
