Chapter 13: Surprises

Several months later…

Konan rolled over in bed, blinking her eyes rapidly as she woke up from her peaceful slumber. Feeling the side next to her, she felt that Pein wasn't there, which usually meant he was up already or had gone to work earlier than usual. Yawning and getting up, she suddenly felt queasy. Shrugging it off as just something else she headed to get breakfast.

To her delight, Pein was sitting there with a cup of coffee and the day's newspaper. He gave her a small smile.

"Morning," He greeted, and she greeted him back.

Moving towards the counter to get herself some coffee, she grabbed her favourite mug and put the kettle on.

"Work?" She asked him.

"Later." He replied, setting the newspaper down.

"Surprising. Normally you sleep a little later on days like these." Konan teased.

"Haha," The auburn haired male said sarcastically. "Very funny, but with you snoring like no tomorrow, I don't exactly have a peaceful rest."

Konan feigned shock and cracked a smile. "I do not!"

"How would you know? I was kept up half the night."

Konan laughed. She knew he was just joking and poured the now boiled water into her mug before stirring it.

"Anyway, what about you? Anything to do today?"

"I am drowning in paperwork, it's not even funny. It even makes me rethink why I became a teacher."

"Really? Even when you come home squealing about how divine your kids are? Too bad. I actually thought you liked being a teacher."

"Touché."

Pein gave a small laugh and Konan laughed as well. It was so much nicer living with him now. They hardly had problems (aside from people who hog the bathroom *cough* Pein *cough*) and she couldn't be happier.

The bluenette lifted her mug to take a sip of her drink when the aroma of the coffee infiltrated her nose. In that second, she had dumped the mug back on the counter and was dashing for the bathroom with her hand in front of her mouth.

A confused Pein ran after her to find her vomiting into the toilet, dry heaving, and awkwardly he held her hair away from her face.

"You okay?" he asked once she calmed down a little. She rinsed her mouth from the sink before replying.

"I'm fine. Really, it's nothing." She said with a wave of her hand. Her face was flushed.

He wasn't convinced. That much was obvious from his creased forehead and the worried look he was giving her.

"Maybe you should see a doctor, just in case." He offered.

"I told you, I'm fine! It really wasn't anything bad." Konan said and exited the bathroom with Pein closely following her, still continuing their debate.

"So puking your guts out is good?"

"…No, but it's nothing to get worried about. Relax."

He sighed but took her word for it. If she said she was okay, then maybe she was and he was just overreacting a little.

"But tell me if you feel anything weird, got it?"

"Got it."

Over the next few days it only got worse. She would vomit almost every morning and more during the day. He breasts had also become tender. When she told Pein that it definitely wasn't normal he offered the doctor once again and this time, Konan agreed.

In the waiting room, Konan fidgeted like a nervous child until eventually she spoke.

"Pein, I'm nervous. What if it's something bad?"

"Relax, maybe it's just a simple virus or something." He replied.

"But that's the thing! I feel fine. I know what it's like to be sick and I feel fine!"

"Don't worry. We'll get this sorted out."

When the secretary called her name, she stood up with Pein and headed to the doctor's room. Inside sat a red haired woman reading papers. The small room had a bed pushed up against the wall in the right side of the room. By the woman was a desk and chair with a door to her left that lead to another room.

"Miss Konan?" She asked.

"Yes..."

"Please have a seat." Konan obliged and Pein sat next to her on the bed.

"Now then, how have you been feeling? Is something wrong?"

"There is but I don't feel anything like flu or something."

"Explain."

"I've been vomiting every day for the past week and my chest feels really sore." The blunette said, motioning towards her bosom.

"Hmm…Do you have to use the bathroom more?"

"Somewhat, yes."

"Do some scents make you nauseous?"

"It's what usually makes me vomit…"

Konan bit her bottom lip now as a contemplating look crossed the woman's face. Pein squeezed her hand gently and she took a deep breath.

"Alright, Miss. I'm going to need you to do a few things for me. Thereafter we might know exactly what's wrong with you." The doctor said with a smile.

"Do you have… any idea what is happening?"

"Yes, actually I do. But don't worry. Just trust me and everything will be alright."

Konan hesitantly stood up from the seat to do what the doctor was about to tell her. Pein's cellphone suddenly rang. Taking it out and looking at the screen he mouthed an apology before leaving the room. The doctor carried on.

"Alright, here's what you're going to do…"

After Konan had done what the doctor had asked, the redhead had returned just minutes later with a smile on her face.

"Miss Konan, do you want the good news or bad news first?"

Konan thought for a few seconds before she replied, "Bad news."

"Well, the bad news is that you'll probably be feeling nauseas for the next month or more. But don't worry; we have medication to lessen the nausea."

"And the good news?"

"Good news is, you're going to be a mother, Miss. You're pregnant."

Konan felt her mouth suddenly go dry and she gaped at the woman.

"Pregnant?"

"That's right. If you'd please return to the waiting room, I can sort out your medication."

The feelings the blunette was having was happiness and fear at the same time. It was a scary yet amazing thought that she was going to be a mother.

Then she smiled.

She was going to be a mother.

But what would Pein say about that?

During the drive home, Konan felt strangely nervous about telling Pein. She was scared.

Scared he might not be as happy as her.

And yet, when he broke the silence she was both relieved and incredibly anxious.

"And? What did she say?"

"Well… she says the nausea might not stop for a month or so…"

"But what's wrong with you?"

"Funny thing actually… the doctor says that I'm…"

"You're?"

"I'm pregnant."

Pein's eyes went as wide as saucers as he abruptly looked to the blunette sitting next to him. She was looking at her hands folded in her lap as if they were the most amazing things in the world. He swallowed and then took a breath.

"So… it's mine…?"

"Yes, Pein. You're going to be a dad."

Then Konan gave him a small smile and his racing heart stilled.

The thought wasn't so bad now.

Yes, being a father definitely wasn't a bad idea.

A/N: Short, yes I know. But it would've taken much longer to get out.

I apologize for the wait. I've been really busy and it might take a bit before the next piece comes out. But this story only has 2-3 chapters left and then it's over.
