ONE WE WERE WARRIORS
A/N: Told you it was a two for! You get two for the price of one. Sometimes the chapter titles make sense, other times they don't. Has anyone guessed what the titles are yet? If you visit my tumblr you might just find out what it is. I also love hearing from you all whether it be in reviews, more fanfiction or fanart. This will sort of contain Viking lore/ceremonies but I am giving them my own spin. You know the deal if you don't like it write your own!
BAD BLOOD
When Hiccup awoke from his much-needed slumber he felt as if he had stepped into another world. There was a sweet melody covering all of Berk, there were decorations covering every hut and every street in the Ingerman house clan colours, and most of all there was lots of smiling and laughter. Hiccup looked at Toothless. "How long did we sleep for Bud?" Questioned Hiccup, who had done all his daily processes and had something to eat, he had also made sure Toothless was fed before he took in the scenery. Toothless loved being outdoors, he could stretch his wings and not get told off by Hiccup. However this wasn't the Berk he was use to, was it that weird celebration? Toothless looked around, no he couldn't dind any toes anywhere. At least he and his rider felt refreshed.
Hiccup made his way up to the Great Hall when Astrid spotted him. "Hiccup!" She yelled and ran to him, hugging him tightly to her chest. "Glad to see you as well Mi'lady, what's going on?" How long have I been asleep for?" He questioned. Astrid chuckled. "Not that long, four days. As for what's going on can't you tell? It's the Chiefs duties to know these things." Hiccup looked around.
"No way! Ruff and Fish?" He questioned. Astrid nodded excitedly. "Apparently they thought it was time. Ruff told me Fish was a real gentleman even asking if she was okay with it."
"I'm glad you and Ruff are talking again." Hiccup said simply. Hiccup still looked around he knew Berk could pull together quickly but this was insane. "What about all the preparations, inviting of other tribes? This is why it usually takes so long to prepare a wedding not four days!" Astrid smirked. "Or so I've heard." Hiccup mumbled scratching his right arm, a nervous habit that still hadn't vanished.
"Well since Fishlegs family is all that's left of the Ingerman clan and since Ruff disowned any ties with the Thorstons, well it's just Berk." Astrid explained.
"Speaking of the Thorstons think we will have trouble?" Hiccup asked, Astrid shrugged.
"Well at the least the Chief is around, speaking of you'd better go see Gobber and Fishlegs." She added as an afterthought. Hiccup nodded and gave Astrid a quick kiss since they were in public and they weren't big on public affection. Just when death loomed over them, which come to think of it was all the time.
"It's not funny Tuff!" Fishlegs stuttered out. Tuffnut's laughter bellowed out.
"No, it's hysterical! You're marrying my sister. Loki strikes again!" He laughed so hard he had tears coming out and his belly ached.
"Oh shut up! Where is your wife? I would get more sympathy out of her!"
"Doubt it." Tuff grumbled, his wife was a sore subject at the moment. Hormones were a bitch.
"How'd you come to marry Heather anyway?" Fishlegs asked.
"Some how I managed to crash the ship, and guess which island I end up on? Anyway Heather recognized me straight away. So I asked to help around the island in exchange for help fixing my ship."
"So you know how to barter and just not for idiotic things." Fish interrupted. Tuff glared and started speaking again.
"Anyway since Heather recognized me, her family decided to take me in. I was to also help Heather with her chores."
"And they trusted you?" Snorted Fishlegs, laughing.
"Yeah well, we go to know each other and the next thing I know, I'm asking her to marry me."
"And her family was okay with it? I mean didn't they barter for her dowry or anything? Ask about your family? Why they weren't invited?"
"So um apparently there are more females than males on the island where Heather grew up. So any chance of marriage is a huge deal. I asked Heather to come live with me on Berk and she agreed, the dowry for them wasn't a big thing." Tuff shrugged.
"And what does Dagger think?" Fishlegs questioned, he wasn't able to sit so he had been pacing the whole time back and forth. In just a few hours he was going to be marrying Ruffnut Thorston. He felt queasy and sweaty.
"We haven't exactly told Dagger…" Tuffnut trailed off. Fishlegs eyes bulged.
"Oh Thor." Fishlegs whispered, he was seeing spots before his eyes, he could not faint now!
Hiccup had halted at a pylon thinking he may be intruding on a new family moment but this, this was worse. "You what?! Do you know what you have done?!" Hiccup bellowed, rubbing his head and pacing around.
Both boys smiled in greeting with "Hey Chief you're awake, and you look so much better." Which Tuff probably shouldn't have thrown out there but Hiccup ignored it.
"Okay, okay this stays between us. You two are to say nothing. Least of all your parents find out Tuff." Hiccup hissed.
"If we find out what?" Mrs Thorston questioned crossing her arms.
"Of course." Hiccup mumbled, he was destined to bring bad luck upon himself. Fishlegs gulped and was in full panic mode, he was racking his brain for a lie, any lie but of course in the head of the moment the truth came out.
"I had sex with your daughter!" Fishlegs blurted out, clasping his hands to his mouth. Mr and Mrs Thorston scoffed.
"I'm sure. Well whatever it is, we will be sure to find out." Mr and Mrs Thorston glared daggers at everyone but they lingered on Tuffnut before they left.
Everyone sighed in relief before Hiccup turned to Fishlegs. "What the Hel Fish?" Hiccup threw his hands up in the air.
"I'm sorry okay! I panicked and words just tumbled out." Tuffnut cackled over in laughter.
"Oh my Thor, my sides I can't breathe, this is how I die!" Still cackling on the floor. Fishlegs took a deep breath.
"Hiccup can I talk to you in private?" Tuff finally got his laughter under control and stood up.
"It's fine, I've got to got get Heather for the ceremony. Later!"
Fishlegs paced around, saw a table and decided to sit, the less other ears could hear the better!
"I'm not exactly sure where to start with this." Fishlegs whispered. "So I'm going to say it. I did have sex with Ruffnut."
"What?" Hiccup questioned louder than he should have.
"Shh keep your voice down! It just sort of happened. It was before the big battle, we didn't know if we were going to survive. Surely you and Astrid you know." Fishlegs shrugged.
"Not that it's any of your business Fish but no we haven't. We've decided to wait for our wedding night. This also stays between us."
"Tuff knows and not from when I blurted it out before."
"Oh for Odin's sake is nothing sacred anymore?" Hiccup questioned.
"I didn't tell him! Apparently Ruff and Tuff talk about everything. I think Ruff was feeling guilty and had no idea who to turn to, to talk about this." Fish twiddled his fingers.
"Why didn't she go talk to Astrid?" Hiccup questioned quietly. Fishlegs was tracing patterns with his fingers on the table.
"It was still in that point in time where they had that really big disagreement. Ruff only told me because we made a promise to each other. We promised to tell one another everything, no matter how small. So the only one she could talk to was Tuff."
"I'm glad that Ruff and Astrid are talking again. You'd better start getting ready for your big day." Hiccup got up.
"I'm scared Hiccup. Am I making the right decision?"
"You love her don't you?" Hiccup questioned.
"With all my heart." Fish answered and Hiccup smiled.
"Then there's your answer." With that Hiccup left.
Hiccup found Gobber with Goethi both smiling, which he found to be unnerving to say the least. "Ah Chief you're awake, and ye look much better lad, I'm glad."
"I feel a million times better thanks Goethi. So a wedding huh?" Hiccup said not sure how-to brooch the subject. Usually it was the Chief and Elders duty to marry their people.
"Don't worry Lad, Goethi and I will take you through it, and we will both be there to lend a hand.
'Well.' Thought Hiccup. 'Vacations over.'
"Actually I'm not worried about the ceremony as such, just about the Thorston family. Mr and Mrs Thorston to be precise." Hiccup explained.
"Well Hiccup this is an unusual circumstance but really nothing new for us Berkians. I remember before ye were born a lot of problematic weddings, Big Bertha's being the most problematic."
"Mrs Hofferson?" Hiccup questioned wide eyed. Astrid had never said anything.
"Aye Lad. I'll spare you the details but that's a wedding I dare not care to repeat. This'll be fine." Gobbwe gave Hiccup a pat on the shoulder.
"We are starting a new tradition Lad, first wedding where dragons are invited instead of killed." Gobber laughed.
Fishlegs had gotten his ancestors sword, not without plenty of sweating and fainting. Since Ruffnut had renounced ties, Tuffnut decided to surprise her with his sword. If he needed another well Hiccup was the master of the forge, even if Gobber thought he himself was.
The wedding procession was about to start, everyone taking their rightful places, everyone bar Mr and Mrs Thorston. "I've let this go on too long." Mr Thorston said.
"Aye so have I. This is my fault. I should have put my foot down harder." Mrs Thorston said. Their loud talking was causing a commotion. Valka went to go get a handle on things and maybe knock some sense into two idiots.
"We are stopping this right now!" Mr Thorston bellowed. Valka stood in front of them.
"You will do no such thing!" Valka hissed. "I've had enough of yer antics and I'll be damned if you ruin this for these two sweet children." Mrs Thorston looked shocked and Mr Thorston was red with rage.
"Oh shut it Valka! You're one to talk. You've been gone so long and you didn't return to your husband or child, seemed you liked the animals more." Valka's hand moved so fast that Mr Thorston didn't have time to feel the sting.
"How DARE you!" Valka seethed. Mr Thorston raised his hand and two things happened simultaneously. Cloud Jumper, jumped in front of Valka and roared at the Thorstons, whilst Spitelout grabbed Mr Thorstons forearm.
"I know we're Vikings but I still believe it bad taste to hit a lady. I'll take it from here Valka." Spitelout nodded and Valka nodded in return.
"Come Cloud Jumper." Valka said patting the dragon.
"Now fer ye two. You have two adult children who have turned out to be better than most expected, which is saying something. Count your blessings you still have children, and that they can have babes and you can be Grandparents. I know you ain't seeing eye to eye at the moment which is fine. However, you were all for Ruffnut marrying the Ingerman boy so what changed?" Spitelout asked.
"She denounced any ties to us! That's what changed!" Mrs Thorston shouted out. Her heart aching for her children.
"You need to speak to her, not tell her what to do. She ain't a child anymore and neither is your boy. They are fine young adults. Sit down and speak with 'em. Preferably after the ceremony. I'll let the Chief know. As for your anger, I know what that's like and wanting to take it out on anyone or everyone. I think you need to find another outlet, I know I have." With that Spitelout walked away.
Hiccup stood in front of everyone taking a deep breath, swords were exchanged, then rings and of course a kiss for the bride. He fumbled every now and then with the words but Gobber was there to help him through. There was no sign of Mr or Mrs Thorston, which Hiccup was grateful for. Everyone rejoiced and was then guided to the Great Hall. Hiccup stayed behind to calm his furiously beating heart, you would think he was the one getting married. Astrid also stayed behind with him and smiled at him, he smiled back.
"Well done on your first wedding Chief." She said grabbing his hand and kissing his cheek.
"Thanks, hopefully I'll get use to this Chiefing stuff." He said.
"We will get through it all together." She said whilst he hugged her close. It was a pleasant day on Berk, how long it would stay that way was a mystery.
Author's Notes: I didn't use the whole ceremony as I will be using that for Hiccstrids wedding. And I didn't want to repeat myself. I did research a whole lot on Viking weddings, but as I said I didn't want to place it in this chapter. When I get more time I will try and update again. I really want to finish this fanfiction. Whether I do, well only time will tell.
