Chapter 14 – Riley & Logan
Saturday, 15th March 2025 – Day 1
It was about 10 minutes later when the babies started to wake up. Little did they know their first day would be so eventful! Kensi just wanted their team to come and meet the little guys and then she could rest for a few hours.
"How did you get the doctors to discharge you in time?" Kensi asked quietly as she looked up from Logan to her husband.
"They didn't, I ran out of there, it wasn't fair, I wanted to be with you." He saw the panicked look on her face but quickly made it go away. "You know why I did that? Because…wherever you are, that's where I'm supposed to be."
Kensi couldn't help the smile creeping up her face. "Come here Shaggy." He did as he was told and kissed her sweetly, no lust or desire there, just pure love.
Around 4:15am, the lights were just good enough for them to "say hi" to the world and Riley was the first one to open her eyes. Deeks looked at them and grinned. He was so proud of their little girl and he had this feeling she was going to be trouble if she was anything like her mother. Her eyes though…they were nothing like Kensi's or Deeks'. Now with open eyes he saw bright green eyes, different from anyone else in the family well…maybe apart from…
"Kens?" He said as tears started to form in his eyes. Tears of joy, of pride…
"Yes?" She asked looking up from her son who was still asleep to her still shirtless husband.
"Take a look at her…" Deeks sat on the bed next to her and showed her their daughter with her eyes wide open. Kensi looked at her in awe, their baby girl was perfect. "She's got green eyes Kensi. Just like-" He stopped in the middle of the sentence when a tear rolled down his cheek. With an arm supportively around Riley he reached up with his free hand to wipe the tears coming out of his blue eyes.
"Just like who Marty?" Kensi asked quietly as she looked back at him when he stopped talking.
"My…mom. She reminds me of her. My mom had bright green eyes but instead of brown hair she had these perfect blonde cascades."
"Then how come you and Jamie have blue eyes and Jamie has brown hair?" Kensi asked out of curiosity.
"The blue eyes came from my grandma, my mother's mom, and Jamie's hard came from my father…" Deeks explained while pulling Riley closer to his chest. She was so small, he felt like the first time he hold Justin. She was way smaller though since he only saw JT for the first time when he was 2 weeks old, when Deeks came back from his undercover mission.
"Deeks, look, he's waking up." Kensi said when she looked back at Logan as he started squirming in her arms. They looked intently and when he opened his eyes the partners gasped.
"Oh. My. God."
"Kensi... How did that happen? That's not hereditary is it?"Deeks asked in complete astonishment.
"Not usually... I mean, no one else in the family has it..." Not even Kensi could understand how that was possible.
They stayed like that for a couple of minutes, just in pure adoration of their twins. Riley and Logan. But then something struck in Kensi's brain. "Babe, don't you want to put something on before the team comes to see them? You're probably cold too."
Deeks looked up from his son to look down at his figure. Yeah, so probably he should put at least a shirt on. "Do you even have any of my shirts here Princess?" He asked looking up at her once again.
"Look in my go bag. Eric and Hetty took it out of the car when we were waiting for the ambulance. You know I always keep one of your T-shirts there." She said pointing to the bag atop of the armchair in the corner of the room.
Next to it were two other bags. One in a lime green and the other in a light orange. The green one read LOGAN and the orange one had RILEY on it. The bags were at their house and Deeks lifted an eyebrow when he saw them. He knew Kensi had came directly from the NCIS office. "Hey Kens? When did you go home to bring the kids' bags?"
"Uh-I didn't, my mom brought them when she came with Justin."
Deeks nodded in acknowledgement as he put Riley in the hospital crib. He then walked up to the armchair and opened Kensi's bag. He looked for one of hisT-shirts but instea all he found was his sweatshirt from NCIS he rarely used. Deeks took it out of the bag and with a lot of effort dressed it. Kensi saw as he grimaced by the simple fact of putting on the sweatshirt.
"Are you okay? Do you want me to call one of the nurses? They can check the wound if you need..." Kensi suggested.
"I'm fine. I don't need any of it, really..." He said as he walked back to Riley's crib and picked her up.
"Marty, you're in pain. I can see it..." Kensi insisted.
"Okay, but… I'll ask for help when you get your rest." Just when he finished talking there was a knock on the door. "Come in."
The door opened and Julia appeared with a big smile on her face. "Can we see them?" She whispered.
"Sure mom, come on in."
Julia was the first entering the room followed by Justin and Caleb wide awake now, Nell and Eric, Sam, Callen and Paris and finally Hetty. "Mr. Deeks, good to see you again. I believe we'll need to talk later. Someone called from the ER, they were looking for you."
"Uh-yeah. I guess we do…"
"Daddy, can I see them?" Justin asked eagerly.
"Sure buddy, sit here next to mommy." Justin did as he was told with the biggest smile on his face as everyone else gathered around Kensi's bed.
Deeks and Kensi exchanged a look and grinned, then he nodded and she cleared her throat. "Guys, we'd like you to meet Logan Kai Blye-Deeks and Riley Mia Blye-Deeks!" Kensi said, the excitement clear in her voice but her tone ever so calm.
The whole team tried to approach them as they showed the happy babies for the first time. They looked at the twins and the wide eyes were evident. The silence that followed only made Kensi and Deeks chuckle.
"Guys? Is this like the time when we told you we were having twins? 'Cause it sure feels like it!" Deeks asked with his best smirk on his face.
"Uh-they're…gorgeous! Kensi, he has your eyes! How's that even possible?" Nell was the first one to break the silence.
"We have no idea, Dr. Kate saw it before us but she just told us "You'll probably notice something rather familiar in your son. Have fun, it's not something you should really worry about, he's great!". And when we saw him with his eyes wide open we were utterly astonished." Kensi explained and they took turns in holding the twins.
After Kensi's explanation, the whole team was at awe looking at the newborns and when finally handed them back to Deeks and Kensi, there was still one person missing. "Mommy, can I hold them?" Justin asked.
"Sure thing honey. Come closer, daddy will teach you how to hold them." Kensi said, a tired smile adorning her face.
Justin adjusted himself next to his mother and Deeks, who had little Riley back in his hands, approached his eldest son and began to pass his daughter to the kid's smaller arms. "Okay, like this JT. One arm supporting her head and the other under her legs with your hand resting on her back. Hold her carefully against your chest." Deeks instructed him softly.
He did exactly as he was told. "Like this daddy?" Justin asked whispering and Deeks nodded happily, a goofy smile on his face. "She's so tiny mommy!" He whispered, never looking away from his sister.
After a few minutes holding Riley, JT passed her back to Deeks who laid her on her hospital crib since she was sound asleep once again. Logan was squirming in Julia's arms, fighting the tiredness he felt. "Can I hold Logan now daddy?"
Deeks hesitated at first, after all Logan was starting to get fussy, but in the end he looked at Kensi who discretely grinned and nodded in agreement. "Alright. Julia, can you pass him to me please?"
Justin did the same thing again and everyone looked in wonder as he was able to calm down baby Logan until he was fully asleep. He passed his brother back to his father's arms and saw him put the little guy in his crib. Then Deeks looked at JT once again. "Nice buddy, you're a natural!" He said softly.
"I am…?" Justin asked in pure joy.
"Of course you are, you even managed to put the babies asleep. Did you like to hold them?"
"Yes, they're so tiny daddy." He whispered.
"Yes they are, you know, you and Caleb were tiny like them too when you were born." Nell chimed in again smiling gracefully.
"That tiny mommy?" Justin asked looking back at Kensi.
"That tiny little monkey." She confirmed.
"Well, now that we've seen these beautiful newborns and we know that both Mrs. Deeks-Blye and Mr. Deeks are quite healthy, I believe you should let them be. Kensi needs her rest." Hetty suggested and everyone started to bid their goodbyes to the happy yet tired couple with promises of coming back later. Once everyone was outside and she was on her way out, Hetty turned around swiftly. "Mr. Deeks, can I have a word with you outside please?"
Deeks swallowed hard, chuckled looking down at his feet and then looked up at his petite boss while scratching the back of his head. "Uh-yeah…sure thing…" He glanced back at Kensi, worry in his eyes. "I'll be right back Princess."
XX
"Mr. Deeks…always breaking the rules…" Hetty started as soon as he left the room and closed the door behind him. Julia had stayed inside talking to her daughter, who was beyond tired.
"Uh…Hetty you know I needed to be with her. Plus, I was fine – scratch that – I am fine. I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't have run away but I wasn't thinking about the consequences, I was thinking about Kensi, about Riley and Logan. I wasn't needed downstairs, in fact, I was just taking up space. But I was needed here, by my wife's side." Deeks explained almost defensively.
"Don't you fret Mr. Deeks. I understand your duties as both a husband and a father. However, I took the liberty of calling one of the nurses from the ER, an acquaintance of mine, to come up here and see if your shoulder is fine. "
"Hetty! Long time no see!" A voice from behind Deeks could be heard and he saw a light smile appearing in Hetty's face.
"Dear Emily, how are you?" Hetty asked and Deeks turned around to face a beautiful young nurse, probably in her late twenties, green eyes and a long light brown hair pulled into a fishtail braid. She had a gentle grin on her face.
"I'm great and you? Is everything alright? I came running as soon as I heard who had asked for me!" Emily said. Her skin sure looked like every other Californian girl's, kissed by the sun, but with that accent she couldn't fool anyone. Deeks immediately identified her as a born and raised southern girl.
"Oh everything is just fine with me. Mr. Deeks, let introduce you to Emily Williamson. Her father, Sgt. Frank Williamson, was a good friend of mine. I've known Emily since she was in her crib." Hetty informed him quietly.
"Hi, I'm Emily!" The young nurse said sticking out her hand.
"Marty Deeks, it's nice to meet you!" Deeks showed his trademark smirk as the two shook hands.
"So Hetty, tell me, how can I be useful to ya'll?"
"Well, Mr. Deeks was shot a few hours ago. He was brought in here at the same time his wife came in to have their twins. He was down in the ER and got his treatment. When he heard his wife was ready to have the babies he ran out of there but now he's in pain. Can you do me a favor and check his wound please?" Hetty explained as Emily listened intently.
"Sure, anything for you Hetty! Mr. Deeks, maybe I could do the quick check-up in your wife's room. It's easier and you'll have more privacy. Is she still awake?"
"Yes, she is. We won't bother her yet."

After Emily checked Deeks' wound, he went back to see his newborns and Kensi. Julia had taken off with Justin in order to let him sleep in his own bed. Kensi was so tired, she fell asleep as soon as the room fell silent. He took yet another look at the twins before sitting on the arm chair and finally resting his eyes after one butt-kicking day. Both Riley and Logan only woke up once during the rest of the night in hunger.
In the late morning, Deeks woke up feeling the luckiest man in the world. The windows were closed and the blinds were down. He checked his phone. 11:45am. He unlocked it. 3 text messages. 1 missing phone call. The missing call was from Nate and the messages were from Nell, Jamie and Callen. He'd call Nate later, when Kensi was awake. Nell and Callen were asking if they could go by the hospital later in the day. Deeks quickly texted them back saying yes. Jamie's text was just to let him know they would swing by after lunch, around 2pm. He was about to text her back when he heard a sound coming from one of the cribs.
As fast as he checked his phone, he was on his feet, ready to attend his baby's request. It was Logan, but...he wasn't crying. He was just trying to get out of there, much like his big brother, he wanted to see the world, not sleep while life was happening around him!
Deeks took a good look at him as he kept on stretching his tiny little arms out, waiting for someone to take him out of that crib. On his face stood a genuinely happy smile, one that Deeks immediately identified as his wife's. Kensi wouldn't show it that often and it seemed like this little secret she kept for him, but whenever she smiled like that, his world stood still and all worries were long gone. On the last 7 years, he might be able to count on one hand the occasions when she showed him that smile... Then he picked up his son who never stopped carrying that smile as Deeks kept remembering...
Our wedding day... The day she discovered she was finally pregnant... The day Justin was born... The-
"He's perfect..." Kensi interrupted his thoughts by saying this next to his ear.
Deeks could feel his wife's arms going around his waist while she rested her head on his shoulder. "Morning Fern, he's pretty much like his mom you know?"
Kensi felt herself blushing slightly. After all these years, he still had that effect on her... "Deeks..." She whispered as she made her grip on him stronger. "You know you are the best thing that has ever happened to me right? I never knew we would make such perfect little creatures but I couldn't be happier. I love you babe." With that she kissed his cheek lovingly before letting go of him to go check the other crib where Riley was waking up as well. "Hi baby, hi..." She said grinning like a fool. Kensi picked her up and walked over to Deeks again with the baby close to her chest.
"Hey Kensi? Come here..." Deeks whispered and Kensi did as he told her to. She had dark circles under her eyes and her whole body was slightly swollen but he didn't care one bit. He loves just the way she is. So when she was extremely close to him, careful not to hurt the babies, he leaned in and she met him halfway as they shared one of the most caring and sweet kisses they had ever shared.
They slowly pulled away and once again Kensi looked at their twins. "Do you think they will always be like this?"
"Like what Princess? This small? I pretty sure they're going to grow up, I mean Logan here is gonna be taller than yo-"
"No Deeks, not small. In sync. Do you think they will always be in sync? Like…when one's happy the other is too or when one's crying the other is too. I mean like…this." This being two very happy babies in their arms! It was a valid doubt to have… Twins were known to have some sort of special connection, why couldn't they be in sync about this stuff?
"I dunno… I honestly don't know. Guess we'll have to wait and see, right?" He smirked and kissed her forehead.
And so the hours started passing by. Around noon Julia arrived with Justin who had been, once again, eager to see his brother and sister. Deeks went downstairs to get himself some food while the nurses brought Kensi's lunch.
After lunch, the three adults were happily chatting when heard a knock on the door. Soon there was a pair of blue eyes looking at them all before speaking up. "Hey everyone, is it a bad time?"
"No, no! Come on in guys, I was already wondering when you'd swing by." Deeks told his sister as she entered followed by Miguel who had Adam in his arms.
Jamie carried two packages that she immediately gave to her sister in law who thanked and opened them to find two stuffed animals, one panda and one tiger. Kensi quickly asked Justin if he wanted to put them on the cribs next to the babies who were currently awake.
"Hey guys!" The couple greeted as they entered. "Adam say hi, say hi!" Miguel said lifting the toddler's arm making him giggle before he could say "Hiii!" It was unusual seeing Miguel talking to Adam in English, usually he talked in Portuguese, so much that the kid knew how to say a few words…or at least tried to.
"So can I see my nephew and my niece now? When you texted me I wanted to run out of the house and come here. But then I looked around and saw Miguel." She said and turned to face said man who was chuckling.
"Yeah and then she said - and I quote - Kensi just had the twins, I wanna go there, but you're too comfy. And then she fell asleep almost immediately!" Miguel explained making everyone in the room laugh and Jamie stuck out her tongue to him.
In the meanwhile, Deeks was picking up Riley and when he turned around to face his sister who quickly gasped at the perfect little sight. "Oh my god Marty! She looks so much like Mom…"
"Yeah…I know. That was the first thing I said when I held her in my arms for the first time! She's just…perfect. I can't even describe it…" The shaggy blonde haired man said with twinkling eyes as he handed his princess over to her aunt.
As soon as Riley was in Jamie's arms she started smiling up at who was holding her. Adam had started walking a few months back so Miguel put him down watching him run to his Uncle's side before walking up behind his love taking a hold of Riley tiny little hand. "She's beautiful guys." He said with a grin of his own.
"Hey Miguel, wanna hold Logan?" Kensi asked him.
He straighten up and looked at his sister in law. "You bet! I wanna see that guy!"
Deeks picked up his son and placed him in Miguel's arms who held him tight against his chest. "He's gonna be one big guy, you can tell."
"Yeah, they're pretty big for twins... Riley was born with 17 inches and 6lbs 7oz. And Logan was born with 18 inches and 6lbs 10oz. Took 'some' effort but they're really strong and healthy." Kensi informed them with a still tired smile on her face but she noticed Jamie was definitely not listening to her. "Hey Jamie?"
The other brunette's head shot up and turned to the voice calling her name. Kensi looked at Deeks who nodded smiling happily. She looked back at her sister in law. "Deeks and I talked about this a few months ago and uh…we'd like to ask you if you, well if you... If you'd like to be Riley's godmother. It would mean a lot to us..." Kensi finally let out the words they both had kept in secret for the last couple of months and now all they could do was wait for an affirmative answer.
Jamie looked stunned for a few seconds, unable to speak to the world until Deeks shook his hand in front of her face waking her up from her transe. "So, will you do it?" He asked.
"Oh my God! This is such an honor, of course I'll do it!" Jamie said looking back and forth between her brother and her niece.
"I'm really glad you will. It means a lot little sister." Deeks said smiling brightly at Jamie.
The photographer proceeded to look down at the baby in her arms. It appeared that in-between such joy and celebration, the twins had been lulled to sleep yet again. Boy they were in sync, yes they were!
"Who'll be her godfather and what about Logan's godparents?" Julia, who had been quiet through all time there, just observing her grandchildren, finally chimed in.
"Well, since Justin's godparents are Nell and Eric, we've chosen Jamie and Callen as Riley's godparents and as Logan's godparents we chose Sam and Michelle." Kensi explained to everyone in the room.
"Now that Jamie here accepted to be our baby girl's godmother, everyone has accepted to do this for us!" Deeks couldn't help the smile on his face and apparently it was contagious as he picked up his nephew who had a smile matching his own and started to play with him.
"Hey Smarty?" Jamie started after a few moments of comfortable silence.
"Yeah?"
"I'm having a few ideas here..."
"Uh-oh! There comes trouble! You know trouble is coming when she says that!" Deeks earned an eye roll from both his sister and his wife but a chuckle out of his eldest son and a giggle from the boy sitting in his lap. "Just kidding! Go ahead Mimi..."
"Well I'm thinking about...a photo-shoot with the five of you. It can be in a few months and wherever you want, but...what do you think?" She finished looking up from the girl she was cradling.
Deeks looked into his sister's eyes before looking into Kensi's. Kensi shrugged slightly before showing him one of her most honest grins.
"I guess we're in! All of us!" He said with his trademark smirk held in place.
And just like that, a new phase began for the Deeks family!
XX
Two days later Kensi and the twins could finally go home, and so could Deeks. On Monday, March 17th, Deeks helped Kensi packing and they finally went home. The drive was silent, mostly because both Riley and Logan were asleep and Kensi was in the backseat with them. She was still tired but not as much as she had been on Saturday. Now she was ready to start this journey with her family and their new family members.
Deeks parked the car in front of their garage, gathered all their stuff they had brought from the hospital and helped Kensi take the twins out to take them to the house. Then he remembered something, almost 7 years ago and looked down at her as they walked side by side to the front door.
"Hey Kens? Remember this, 7 year ago. Instead of two babies we had one, I was so scared I'd drop him, I was holding Justin with my life. And when we walked in, Monty was waiting for us…" Deeks said and Kensi caught the sadness in his voice. Damn she missed that old mutt just as much as he did…
"Marty… I miss him too… you know what I've been thinking though? Maybe we could get a new one, I dunno Monty II, something like that... Justin would love and everyone else would be happier. What do you think...?"
However, Deeks didn't get to answer his beautiful wife. The front door had swung open...and there was Julia waiting for them. Beside her there was Justin eagerly waiting for his siblings.
They went in. They had lunch. Logan woke up and Kensi fed him. Julia went home. Riley woke up and Deeks changed her diaper. Deeks cooked their dinner and they ate. After that the whole family sat in the living room watching TV until Justin fell asleep just like Riley and Logan.
Deeks and Kensi exchanged a look and smiled. Justin had fallen asleep with his brand new baby sister in his arms while Logan had fallen asleep all snuggled in Kensi. This one will be a mommy's boy, that's for sure! Deeks pulled out his phone and took a photo of his son and his newborn daughter. Then he gently took her from his skinny arms and placed her on Justin's old crib they had put in the living room precisely for this type of moments. He took Justin in his own arms and in a few minutes he went upstairs, put his son to bed and went back downstairs.
When Deeks came back to the living room he found his wife by the older crib with sleeping Logan in her arms and looking lovingly at the little thing inside the crib. In comfortable silence they moved to take both babies to the nursery the couple had finished months before.
Kensi and Deeks had opted to put the two cribs in the same room, the one that was right next door to theirs. The kids' wardrobes would be in that same room while the changing table would be, along with all the toys they already had that their uncles and aunties had given them, in the last room available. Before buying the furniture Deeks and Kensi had discussed whether they should have their own bedrooms or if they should be together at least for first year of their lives. The couple chose the latter.
So they went upstairs and directed themselves to Riley and Logan's bedroom. Switching on the lights, each one took one of the sleeping twins to their respective crib. The walls were painted in orange...not the normal type of orange, more the sunset type of orange... It was gorgeous probably because the wooden furniture went really well with the color. In order to always get the right crib, Deeks had painted their names on the wall, atop of the cribs.
Kensi carefully placed Logan inside his crib while Deeks put Riley in hers. Then they stepped back just so they could both see their peaceful babies sleeping. So it was proved! The twins actually were peaceful...
Deeks put his arm around Kensi's waist and she leaned her head on his shoulder, comfortable under his touch. "They're so perfect...don't you think babe?" Kensi whispered to her husband.
"Of course their perfect! Have you met their mother?" He asked back, half joking, half serious, making his wife chuckle quietly. He thought Kensi was perfect, so there was no doubt on his mind that his kids would be just as perfect as their mother. And he could be happier...
After a few silent minutes Kensi spoke up again. "So, are you ready for our new adventure? Do you think we can do this?" Turning her head, she looked up at him with questioning eyes.
"I'm sure we'll be fine...there's nothing we can't do when we're together, right princess?" And with that Deeks kissed Kensi's forehead holding her tight as they kept on watching their children sleeping. Their newborns. Their new addition to their list of "everythings". Their twins. Riley and Logan...
