Rolf had taken Lysander out for the day and it was just Luna and Lorcan at home. Luna grabbed her youngest son's hand and dragged him out of the house, throwing gloves and a hat at him before quickly tying a scarf around his neck. The task was made slightly more difficult as Lorcan struggled to get away and run back inside the house.

When she had woken up, everything had been covered in a soft white blanket. Luna loved snow, and had been determined to make Lorcan feel the same way. He could be quite stubborn, and usually preferred to stay inside reading, but she was sure that he would love the day that she had planned.

"Come on Lorcan!" She skidded suddenly on ice and sent them both sprawling to the ground. He pushed himself on to his feet quickly but before he could run back inside she hurled a snowball at him.

It caught him squarely on the shoulder and he yelled and turned back to face Luna, who was doubled up with laughter.

His eyes, a beautiful baby blue colour to match her own, narrowed and she ducked as he tugged on a branch, bringing piles of snow tumbling down on her head. She squealed and ran over to him, throwing him down into the snow.

"Mum! Stop!" He shrieked and squirmed as she stuffed snow down his neck.

She stilled and sat back. "I'll stop… if you sled down the hill with me." She was sure that the promise of sledding would be the one thing that could keep him outside. He and Lysander both loved racing down together and she had always sort of wanted to try it.

He looked up at her defiantly, apparently deciding that he would stay outside if they got to do something cool. "Fine." He muttered, leading the way round to the side of the house where the sled was propped up.

The hill was a huge, steep mound at the back of their house. Together they dragged their sled up to the top and climbed in. Despite Lorcan's attempts to conceal his excitement, she knew that he was looking forward to it.

"Are you ready?" Luna asked, and she found herself suddenly nervous. It had been a long time since she had done anything like this, and while her sons might be daredevils she wasn't entirely sure that this was a good idea.

Lorcan pushed off and sent them flying down the hill. Both of their screams combined with the whistle of the wind as it shot past their ears.

They hit the bottom of the hill and spun round, finally coming to rest against a wall of snow. They both tumbled out of the sled and Lorcan stood up shakily.

"I think that was dangerous mum." He paused and then grinned. "Can we go again?"

She smiled and pulled his hat down to cover his ears. "I'm dangerous but you're crazy. You're insane if you want to do that again but I won't stop you."

He ran off and she shook her head slightly and turned to begin making a snowman. It wasn't long before Lorcan joined her, helping her to roll the snow together to form a compact ball. While he ran off to find sticks, she made her way inside to grab the necessary carrot and picked up a couple of stones on the way.

She let him add all of the decoration, and smiled as he reached up on tiptoe to drape a scarf around the snowman's neck. Stepping back to admire their handiwork both Luna and Lorcan grinned.

"What's next mum?"

Luna smiled at her son's unstoppable energy and restlessness and drew her wand to summon a couple of bags from inside. Slinging them over her shoulder she winked mysteriously at her son and led the way down the road, to where a large pond stood. In the winter it was frozen solid and she stepped out to test the ice before rejoining her son at the side.

"Put these on" She held out one of the bags to him and he opened it carefully, removing the ice skates inside. She loved ice skating, but the boys had never expressed much of an interest for it. Hopefully that would change today. She stepped out carefully and then held a hand out to Lorcan.

He followed her shakily, only just reaching her when he slipped and fell hard onto the cold ice. She laughed lightly and helped him up, brushing off the snow that covered him. He frowned determinedly and pushed away from her, trying to figure out how to move on the ice. She followed him gracefully, twirling around as he stumbled again. This time he caught himself, and grinned at her.

She grabbed his hand and spun him round, giving him enough speed to go sailing to the other side of the pond. He was getting the hang of it, slowly but surely Lorcan was growing more confident and it wasn't long before he was racing around the edge faster than Luna dared.

Eventually he collapsed onto the bank at the side, finally exhausted by everything. She moved over to join him and they sat in silence for a few minutes, watching a couple of solitary robins hop across the fresh snow, leaving light imprints everywhere they went. After about fifteen minutes they trekked inside slowly, where Lorcan immediately collapsed onto the sofa.

Luna grinned at him as she brought over two steaming mugs of hot chocolate. Her warming spells were already beginning to work and he had stopped shivering.

"So?" She asked, a glint in her eyes. "Worth getting out of bed today?"

Lorcan smiled happily, a smudge of cream dotted on his nose. "Definitely. This was the best day ever!"

Luna sat down beside her son and slung an arm around his shoulders, and they both fell quiet, watching the flames of the fire warm the room.
