Ch14:Charges & Golf
Jake was prepared to spill his heart on the table to the girl that he really wanted to have something way more with. But as usual Jake's life wasn't going the way he wanted it to. All he had needed was another good five or ten minutes and all would have been all right. Embry and Sam came walking in there like they had the greatest secret in the world. Sam looked like he had struck gold while Embry was more so relaxed but Jake knew he had something up his sleeve.
Throughout the conversation nothing was answered except maybe Embry telling on himself about knowing who Jake was married to. Jake wished he had taken Leah home like he originally wanted to. But his conscious took over and he really was tired of her trying to fight him after getting the answer she didn't want to hear. So a public place seemed like a good idea, until he realized that Leah was giving him a fair chance. No anger or suspicion had come through her eyes and he was genuinely shocked.
The conversation between the four of them was a bit laughable to Jake inside his head until Jake asked to talk to Leah alone. He didn't want to ask, if he hadn't been blocked in by his brother or Leah wasn't all the way on the other side of the table blocked in by Sam he would have gotten the two of them out of there.
But Embry leaned in and whispered lowly and fast, "This is for the best. Just trust me bro."
Then Embry looked over at Leah and said out loud. "Out of time Jake, out of time…I'm taking you home. Your real home, you need to see what's changed."
Leah frowned, "I still have school and my life here I can't just pack up and go." Jake loved how beautiful she looked even when she was upset. She was one of the few women that he knew who made anger look sexy.
"Yes Leah yes you can. You need to." Embry said to her softly.
Jake got up with his chair scraping across the floor. "You aren't taking her anywhere."
He didn't care what his brother said about trusting him not after the small exchange they had earlier that day. Jake still needed to talk to Leah and clear the air. Tell her the contracts were now null and void, he just wanted the opportunity to be with her the real way, even though he was still a married man. That is if Leah still even wanted him. She had to have wanted him just a little based on the small dance she gave him earlier, Jake didn't initiate that, she did. After Embry had pretty much said, with not so many words, that he was playing for keeps Jake knew for sure that he couldn't trust him.
Embry snapped his fingers twice before getting up grabbing for Jake. Jake's elbow flew out to his brother's face as Embry grabbed for his other arm and held it behind his back. Jake grabbed for Embry's neck and Embry's grip slackened enough for Jake to get him in a choke hold on the floor.
"Get her out of here!" Jake and Embry both simultaneously shouted at Sam.
Jake wasn't planning on her getting hurt by standing there. Jake didn't know who Sam listened to he was just glad that he got her out of there. Embry punched Jake in his jaw so hard that Jake's teeth clinked and he grimaced in pain as Jake got a good knee kick to Embry's nose. There was blood coming from somewhere but at that time Jake didn't know if it was from him or Embry.
Somewhere in between there they fell on the floor, fighting like two teens in high school instead of talking like two grown men. Jake had his hands around Embry's neck as Embry had his own hands around Jake's. Jake wouldn't be surprised if Leah didn't want a thing to do with either of them with how they were acting. Jake had no idea how long they were fighting when he heard the faint police sirens getting closer and closer. Jake and Embry were out of breath with blood spewing from places Jake didn't feel like paying attention to yet. Everything fucking hurt.
"Alright, alright man I give up. Stop." Embry put his hand up in a 'T' a few times tiredly as he fought to get his breath back.
"Fine but if you take another cheap shot at me…" Jake tried to snarl but it came out weak. Embry just shook his head leaning his head back against the wall as he moved the hem of his shirt over his bleeding lip. Jake could still taste the blood in his own mouth; it was metallic, bitter and not pleasant at all. Jake turned his sore beat body towards the wall next to Embry and thought about Leah for a bit. Was she really going back to La Push?
Technically Sam had just kidnapped her, she didn't want to go. But for some reason Embry seemed to want to get them both over there. Well, mainly Leah, but his brother had to have known that wherever Leah went Jake would follow. He wasn't allowing her to slip from his grasp this time.
They were both leaning against the wall breathing like they had just did a full blown ten mile running marathon when Jake saw the flashing of red and blue out the window. Had he not been so tired or sore he would have just snuck out even though anyone would be able to identify him easily. Jake knew alot of tall men from his business or just meeting people on the street, but with Jake's height, build, and unforgettable face his chance of not being found even in as big of a city as Seattle was small. He still would have had a chance, had he tried.
Jake didn't know how bad he looked but from peeking over at Embry he didn't even want to know. Jake wiped off the blood that was trailing down from his eyebrow to the right side of his face. Embry sniffed as eight police officers filled the place within seconds pointing their guns right at Jake and Embry. Embry's left eye was already lowering a bit when he looked over at Jake. Both of them put their hands in the air as the officer's proceeded closer. It wouldn't look good if Jake and or Embry stood not that they really could. Embry hit and kicked pretty hard. Jake was sure that they would topple right over if either even tried.
All of the cops were white and two large Native men trying to stand after they demanded that they both put their hands in the air and not move anything else wasn't going to be a good look. Jake knew once any of the police officer's recognized him this whole spat would be all over the news and magazine with twisted details before the day was over. He made yet another stupid decision and still left Leah with no answers, she was probably even more confused.
Jake took a looking sweep around and saw the damage both Embry and him had done. Chairs were over turned, drinks were leaking out on the floor, tables had fallen, a few of the pictures on the wall had also fallen from the wall but still remained intact from having plastic coverings instead of glass like some pictures did. Jake didn't even realize that they had somehow rolled in between their fight almost to the entrance he was leaving out of now. The black folder that Sam had slid over towards Jake during the confrontation was gone now. Jake had no idea where it went but he intended on finding out what was in it.
It took four guys to help Jake off the floor, and three to help Embry. Neither Jake nor Embry got cuffed as they probably should have but their arms were behind them as a one of the officer's had a hold on their arms. When they got outside Jacob and Embry were sitting on the curb leading out to the parkng lot on separate sides as an officer asked them questions seperately. The questions were pretty stupid. But the main one was if he wanted to press charges against Embry. Jake shook his head, if he decided to press charges that would only cause more problems neither of them needed. Embry and Jake got their anger out with the fight he hoped. Since Jake, Embry, nor the owner of Starbucks decided to press charges, Jake and Embry were let off the hook after going up to the police station to sign a bunch of unnecessary paperwork.
Jake ignored the pain in his leg as he half walked, half limped out of the police station. "You aren't going to try and bash my head in right now right?" Jake asked when he had reached the last step half turning to see Embry.
Embry was a step behind him chuckling softly. "Nah. I got you good already it looks like. Since I beat a little sense into you... can we try and be cordial now?"
Jake looked over at Embry. "What happened to us? I mean we used to be great friends and I understand with time things change but man I kind of hate your fucking guts right now."
"I told you to trust me. I was trying to get you to come back to La Push i can't do this shit on my own, it's so much pressure on me. Leah seemed to be the only key to get your stubborn ass to understand anything, so I went with that even though all that did was make her mad at me for hiding shit from her. I was already planning on pissing you off so i didn't care about that part too much. Now that I think about it that was stupid huh?" Embry tried to laugh before moving his hand to his injured side.
"Yeah, real stupid you could have just said that instead of saying she was yours and shit. You know she's going to be real pissed that she's stuck with Sam out of all people." Jake said as they waited for the cab that was going to take them back to their cars.
"Probably." Embry said as a cab came and picked them up.
"Hey." Jake nodded his head towards Embry when they both got in and the door was closed. Jake gave the address of the starbucks where his car was still parked and the car took off.
"What?" Embry said leaning his head back again with his arm over his eyes.
"You said all that shit to piss me off, but you really do love her don't you?" Jake asked Embry.
"So much it hurts, but even when I tried spending all that time trying to make her completely forget you, nothing worked. As bitchy as she acts and as much as she pushes you away that's just Leah's way of saying 'try harder'. With all the shit you promised her and broke you need to try as hard as you can." Embry spoke gripping on to the seat. Jake chose to remain silent when Embry seemed like he had wanted to say something else. "And to be honest I really don't mind being her bestfriend it's just frustrating because I know had you not came back in her life she would have taken me back."
"You mean she would have settled for you?" Jake didn't want to start another fight but he felt that it needed to be said.
"Pretty much, I love her enough that I would have been okay with that. Pathetic right?"Embry licked his lips before adding his other arm on top of the one already on his face.
"Just a bit. But I been in the same spot so I can't even speak." Jake looked out the window.
"I knew what I was getting myself into when I first began speaking to her. I just hope she forgives me for being an asshole." Embry sighed.
Jake touched the cut on his eyebrow that had stopped bleeding but was still tender. "I can see that going badly." Jake decided since he was asking questions he might as well get the ones that were bugging him most out of the way. "How did my mom and dad take you being the other son?"
"That's a conversation you need to have with the two of them. They both miss you man." Embry was speaking with his hand in place.
"Doubt it, my dad said to never return had I ran off and married Bella." Jake leaned his head against the half open window next to him.
"You have no idea what you're talking about you should stop making excuses and get your ass over there. Basing your whole life off eight or so years ago is just stupid. First off La Push has changed alot since you left. And secondly people always say things in the fit of anger. Whatever Billy said before was probably taken the wrong way and or he's over it. You know your mom still cries looking at pictures of you that she has hidden all over the house? She doesn't think anyone knows but everynight when Billy leaves for a meeting she does the same thing. And don't get me started on our father." Embry moved his arm from over his eyes so that he could look at Jake.
Jake's heart felt like it paused. His mom cried over him? He couldn't have that. Maybe it was time to let the past go and see his family. Embry shook his head after noticing the silence from Jake. "The guys aren't going to let me live this black eye down by the way. I can already hear Quil now." Embry complained.
"Good. You deserve it." Jake wanted to laugh but his sides kind of hurt. "You got me good too though."
"Good. I'll sleep a little bit better at night knowing that much." Embry laughed.
"Did we have to fight?" Jake asked.
"If I remembered correctly you hit me first." Embry looked over at Jake as Jake looked at him.
"You grabbed me first. Self defense man. Self defense." Jake said and Embry chuckled for a second.
"You keep telling yourself that." Embry rolled his eye that wasn't swollen.
"Do you know what was in that black folder?" Jake asked.
"Nah, Sam said it held something important." Embry shrugged. "He was very protective of it though so I don't know. I had to make it look like we were on the same page so I didn't bother bringing it up."
Jake was quiet for a few minutes as he let that sink it. "So are you chief?" Jake decided to ask the one question that had been bugging him since the conversation.
"I feel like it sometimes but nah not yet." Embry shook his head. "I've been at the training camp way too long its so freaking hard, no one thinks so with how great of a leader Billy is but man you have to do so much work it isn't even funny. Billy is looking to retire within the next year or so. The council are pretty much grabbing blindly at straws on who to pick. I'm only a choice by default." Embry said bitterly. "You need to make amends, fight your way back in. You gave up like a wimp and kept using Bella and other shit as your excuse. I can't say too much else on it but you should come back home too. Things might be hard at first but I won't lie anymore we need you man." Embry said as the cab stopped.
Jake took out his wallet and gave a large bill to the old man who was choosing to ignore their talk in the back as he drove the cab. "Keep the change."
They both got out the car and walked over towards the only two cars in the now dark parking lot. Jake couldn't even tell that there had been any commotion earlier. Starbucks was locked up tight and pitch dark inside and no one was walking by from how late it was at night, or from glancing at his watch how early it was. When Embry started to talk Jake looked up at him.
"Look I don't want to sound like a broken record so it's on you. But the odds of Leah leaving to return out here are slim once she see's her family. If she doesn't kill me after I explain that I did this for reasons I just explained to you then you'll see me around. Then you and I can work on mending what small friendship we have left. Handle that court case of yours and get back to La Push before it's too late. Sorry for pissing you off and the stuff I said about Leah but you know why I did it now." Embry tipped an invisible hat before taking a minute to get in his truck.
"Sorry about the black eye." Jake tried to hide the smile that was creeping on his face but it came through anyway.
"Yeah, yeah. Get your ass back to La Push this shiner better have not been for nothing." Embry started his truck and honked twice before driving off down the streets of Seattle.
"Sure, sure." Jake mumbled watching as the truck disappeared as Embry turned a corner.
Jake walked over to his car and patted his jeans down to find his keys before opening the door and getting in. So he now knew that Embry loved Leah but only said those things to piss him off so that he would return home. His parents didn't completely banish him, at least that's what it seemed like from what Embry stated in the cab. Alot of things still didn't make much sense to him but Jake finally had some idea what he planned on doing. As he looked at himself in the mirror of his car he didn't have much bruising on his face except for the medium sized red line above his eyebrow and the browning near his right cheek. The rest of his soreness was on his legs and ribs. He didn't even remember why they had fought to begin with as he looked at himself. He was going to get everything solved and fixed within the next week he just hoped this time things would finally go somewhat his way.
Jacob was waiting to close his divorce in two days, nothing could keep him married to that woman anymore not even if they chained them together and swallowed the key. He was over it and wanted it to be done already. To get his mind off things Emmett and Jasper were playing golf with Jake. He had to get his mind off Leah so he wouldn't run off to La Push before he could close up the divorce that had been letting drag on for far too long. Neither Jasper nor Emmett bought up that yet again Jake looked like shit as the bruises started to yellow as they healed.
Jasper hit the ball and put his hand over his forehead to block the sun that was shining down. But Jake's attention wasn't on where the ball was going, he was looking in the direction that Emmett was since he was quiet for a good two minutes. It looked like Bella was back in town, in a golf cart being driven by Alice.
Jake glared over at Jasper as he finally saw where Emmett was still looking at.
"So Alice may have or may not have told Bella we were going to be here." Jasper looked sheepish as he held on to his golf club.
"Looks like she cut back on the tanning." Emmett started as he squinted. "Last time I saw her she was as dark as Snooki. Not a good look for that Swan girl not a good look ... at all." Emmett shook his head pretending to dry heave. Jake knew what he was doing. He was trying to stop Jake from getting mad but it wasn't working so well.
"I don't feel like dealing with her bullshit today. I was having a good day kind of." Jake frowned. His day wasn't all that great since he now had a thousand questions since he last talked to his brother and he missed Leah terribly. Two days. Two days. It's just two damn days until he could go to La Push and hopefully fix things.
"Sorry man. Alice threatened to withhold a certain something from me if I didn't tell her where we were... and we know how I get when I don't get any." Jasper's Texas twang came out the more he tried to imitate the way Emmett talked.
Emmett broke out into a fit of laughter, his shoulders shaking as he held on to his stomach. "Your super moody Jazz when Alice's keeps her cookie all locked up with no key. I don't know how either of you do it. Even when Rose is mad at me she still gives me some. Angry makeup sex is always the best." Emmett looked like he was about to start drooling from thinking about it.
"Why are we friends with him again?" Jasper looked over at Jake questioningly.
"I have no idea. I have no idea." Jake tried to hide the smile that was coming on his face as the golf cart was close enough for the girls to get out and walk over to them.
Bella looked like she stepped out of an expensive golf fashion magazine as she sauntered over with Alice next to her talking to her extremely fast.
"Maybe if we just ignore her she'll go away?" Emmett suggested.
"When has she ever just gone away?" Jake looked over at Emmett as Jake pulled his sunglasses over his eyes.
Bella held up her hand towards Alice to stop talking as she finally reached Jake. Yup, she defintely didn't look pregnant, so Jake's suspicions were confirmed that she had lied, either for attention or more time to be married to Jake.
"What do you want?" Jake asked putting his golf club back in his bag next to him.
"We're just going to go to the..." Jasper trailed off as he tried to think of something. "...ah hell we're just going to be far away from here." Jasper grabbed Alice's hand and pulled Emmett who looked like he would be set if he had a bag of popcorn and a seat to watch the two of them.
"Man, I always miss all the action." Emmett whined as Alice joined Jasper in pulling him towards the golf cart.
"This is what you consider to be one of your great friends?" Alice asked Jasper as she got in the driver's seat of the cart that she had just driven moments before.
"Yup my lady." Jasper grinned as he sat next to her wrapping his arm around her waist as Emmett got in the back and pouted.
"You can't divorce me.."Bella started as Alice drove them to the next hole. Far enough away that they wouldn't hear anything but close enough that she would be able to pick up her friend when she was done speaking with Jake.
"Why's that?" Jacob narrowed his eyes at her stepping back.
"I'm having our baby." she smiled softly.
"I think you should get your head checked. When was the last time I even touched you?" Jake asked her knowing exactly when he had.
Bella stumbled around her words for a second.
"Can't remember can you?" Jake chuckled darkly.
"It was recent. I don't care what you say." she seemed persistent.
"Okay Bella." Jake knew since he wasn't going to get her answer to change he just shrugged it off as he folded his arms over his chest and looked anywhere else but at her biting her bottom lip.
"Since that didn't work." she rolled her eyes opening the big dark purple purse on her shoulder, pulling out a manila folder. "You don't have proof on my so called infidelity. But I have proof on you." she flashed her smile.
Jake hadn't spoken to any woman except coworkers and Leah and he was separated from Bella at that point so she didn't have anything on him. Jake laughed at her his sunglasses almost fell off from how hard he laughed. But he pushed them back up his nose before they could.
Her face pulled into an unattractive frown. Bella was one of those girls who was really pretty when smiling, okay looking when her face was neutral of all expression, but she was down right ugly when she was upset, which was always her backup plan whenever Jake refused to give into her ways. "B-b-but..."
"Bella we aren't doing this anymore. It's done. The last court date is in two days and there aren't any more extension dates. That deal we had before you made me believe that I had fallen in love with you is over. Let me go I already let you go."
"This isn't over Jacob Black. You may think it is. You might finally divorce me. But you will never get rid of all of this." she moved her hand over her body. "I'll ruin every thing you've ever built before you leave me with nothing. We love each other. I love you and you will love me again that I know of. I'll see you around." she reached up and tried to touch his cheek but he moved back so she huffed and stomped away.
Jake didn't know what to make of that but he was just glad he was done with her for the day. In two days he would be done with her for good and finally return to the place he should have never left. He just hoped that his parents would forgive him, Leah would still be understanding and his brother wouldn't try another beat down session in order to get his attention. As Emmett and Jasper came back over talking to Jake about the conversation, Jacob looked at the beautiful scenery and thought of all the things he was going to say the moment he saw Leah again.
Sorry about last chapter making people hate my Embry...
He kind of explained himself. Like I said all the real answers won't come until both Leah and Jake are back in La Push.
Bella will still be causing mayhem for a lil while longer... *shakes fist at her*
I know there was no Leah in this chapter but I didn't want to make it too long
Anyways Review! :) They equal happiness and love on my end lol
and they help me write better when I write something stupid that I wish I could take back later lol
