Author's Note: So I promised you guys a chapter soon, and I wrote this one 3 weeks ago. I wanted to post it, but I didn't quite like it, and it's been sitting on my desk for awhile. It's an extremely short chapter, but it's important. I really, truly, hope you review this because I really like reading what you all have to say. Thank you.

Chapter 14: Family Ties

Tris's POV:

When I walked up to my house, I saw Four sitting on the front steps. He looked up when he heard my footsteps, and when he saw me approaching, he stood up.

"What are you doing here?" I asked as I got closer. "Someone could see you."

"I was waiting for you. I figured I could intercept you as you came home. Am I allowed in?"

"Suit yourself. Do you want something to drink? It's terribly cold outside."

He asked for hot chocolate, but I told him the Abnegation didn't have it as a drink, so I made two glasses of hot tea. We sat at the table across from each other, but moments later I was sitting in his lap kissing him, our steaming drinks abandoned, left to go cold.

Four pulled my hair out of the braid that I always wore, and curled the hair around his fingers. He touched the nape of my neck gently and then someone knocked at the door.

"Who is that?" Four groaned, untangling himself from me. "I should give them a piece of my mind."

"And they'd tell someone that you were here," I chastised him, going over to answer the door. "Now hide upstairs."

I straightened my appearance as best as I could, smoothing my tangled hair and rumpled clothes. The person knocked again, more insistent and I opened the door to find Marcus Eaton standing at the door with an unsatisfied expression.

"Mr. Eaton," I greeted him. "To what do I owe the honor of your presence this evening?"

"Hello, Beatrice. My, you look like you've been busy. Is someone here?"

I felt my face grow hot. "No… no of course not. It's just me. I about to get in the bath when you knocked, so I hurried to get dressed." Marcus's eyes narrowed and I could tell that he suspected I was lying.

"Then you wouldn't oppose if I looked around? I heard a report someone dressed in black was in the neighborhood. We can't be too careful. Those Dauntless are… dangerous." I opened the door wider and he stepped inside.

"But didn't your son join Dauntless?" I asked, as he peeked in my living room, and walked across the entryway to the kitchen.

Marcus turned towards me. "That he did. That's why I said they were dangerous."

I stayed at the foot of the stairs as Marcus looked around the dining room and kitchen. I needed to warn Four, but it was too late.

"Tris? Are they gone?" Four called from upstairs.

Marcus came whirling in to the entryway, his face red. "So someone is here! And I know who!"

I was panicked as Four appeared at the top of the stairs, his face paled as he saw Marcus, but reddened just like my boss's. It was apparent they knew each other, and I wondered how.

"You!" Marcus hissed as Four descended the stairs. "Decided you liked Abnegation better, did you?"

"Hardly, Tris is the only good thing about it," Four retorted, although he looked nervous, even afraid.

"What's going on?" I asked, trying to mediate the panic that would not be stopped.

"You think you are going to get away with this?" Marcus spat, completely ignoring my question. "The faction leaders will be furious! It will be so wonderful."

"Four what is going on? How do you know Marcus?" I pleaded, and he looked at me with pitiful eyes.

Marcus laughed, and answered himself. "What? You don't see the family resemblance?"

I looked between him and Four, and they did look alike, with the same lips and dark hair. The eyes were different, though. Four's were blue, and Marcus had dark eyes, almost black. Four looked at me helplessly.

"Tris, I-"

"You mean he's never told you?" Marcus cut him off. "Oh, this is just too good. And you still call him by his stupid little nickname. You don't even know his real name. His given name. How could you claim to love him when you don't even know the first thing about him?" Marcus smiled evilly.

I stared at Four. It was true, I didn't even know his real name, and now Marcus was apparently related to him. But how could that be if Four was in Dauntless?

"Go on, Four," Marcus prodded him. "Tell her, you can't possibly lie anymore."

Four looked at the floor, and hot tears formed in my eyes.

"Tell me," I confronted him. "He's right. I should know."

"Marcus is my father. I transferred to Dauntless," he revealed. Then he looked at Marcus, "There, happy?"

"Tobias," I muttered. "This whole damn time you were Tobias? And when did you want to tell me, right as they were about to kill us?"

He looked at me coldly. "You don't know that they would have caught us. Not until he came along."

Marcus watched the two of us with a satisfied expression. "I would have eventually. I saw you two the other night with my own eyes."

Tobias looked like he wanted to jump at his father, but he stayed in place. "You're a terrible person."

Marcus ignored him, looking at me. "I expected more from you, Beatrice. My own apprentice. You could have had so much in life, but now, now you have to go."

I stared at him. "What are you doing in Abnegation? You are the most selfish person I have ever met. Get out."

Marcus shut his mouth and pressed it to a line. After a moment he said, "Fine. But you will hear from me. And the other leaders."

With that he walked out and slammed the door behind him.

"I'm glad you aren't mad-" Tobias started, but I cut him off.

"I am mad," I told him. "I just didn't want to let Marcus think he's won, although he has. I can't believe you didn't tell me, or that I was stupid enough not to notice."

"You aren't stupid," Tobias muttered, but then louder, "I just didn't want you to think that I was a kicked puppy."

"Why would I think that?"

Tobias looked at me but slowly took his jacket off and pulled up his t-shirt sleeve, around his bicep was a ring of bruises that were faint, but were still noticeable.

"He abused me, Tris. I left Abnegation because of that."

"I'm sorry. I'm not mad, and you aren't a kicked puppy. You're better than him, and what is fighting going to do now? We're already caught."

Tobias smiled. "Very true."

"I'm glad I met you, Four."

He smirked. "Call me Tobias, it's good to hear that name again."

"I love you, Tobias. I wasn't sure at first, but I am now."

"I love you too. I knew it the whole time."

I walked over and hugged him, and buried my face in his neck.

"You want a tour of Dauntless?" he asked.

"I sure would," I answered.
