Hello everyone! It's been crazy recently, so that's why I haven't updated. Even as I write this, I'm sick! However, I'm determined to get a chapter out for you guys. This next chapter is basically White Rose City Central, so I hope you all enjoy!
The day after the team dinner, Ruby surprised Weiss by going into The Way the Cookie Crumbles while her shift was still going on.
"Hi, Weiss!" She chirped cheerily as the heiress came out from the back room, a tray of cookies in her hand. The brown-haired girl behind the counter shot a glance at the two of them, then leaned over, her arm draping over the glass case.
"I'm not even gonna ask. Anyways, welcome to The Way the Cookie Crumbles. What can I get you?" She drawled, not sounding very interested.
"I'll take this one, Coco." Weiss offered. Coco pushed her shades farther up on her face and shrugged in response, pushing open the door to the back room and disappearing behind it. At Ruby's questioning look, Weiss decided to fill her in. "That's Coco." Weiss explained. "Coco's grandmother runs this place, and Coco's a bit too unrestrained to hold down most lines of work. She doesn't like this job much, though. She says it's too dull." Weiss explained. Ruby looked confused.
"Why would anyone not be excited about cookies?" Weiss tried her best to look disappointed, but had to bring her hand up to her face to hide her smile.
"What are you doing here, Ruby? Aren't you supposed to be out performing tricks?" Weiss asked.
"I helped Yang at the autoshop earlier, and the manager decided to pay me. So I have the day off!" Ruby replied with a wide smile. "Anyways, can you give me a dozen chocolate chip cookies, please?" Weiss nodded.
"Sure thing." Weiss packed Ruby's cookies in a bag and the two went over to the cash register. Once Ruby had finished paying, she got a mischievous grin on her face.
"Such quick service! And-"Ruby took a cookie out of the bag and took a bite. "-such delicious cookies, too! And what a beautiful employee!" Weiss attempted to keep a straight face, but her red cheeks made it difficult. "In fact-" She leaned in conspiratorially. "-I think I might be falling in love with you!" Weiss blushed even harder.
"Ruby, don't-" She was interrupted when Ruby leaned forward and gave her a swift peck on the cheek. Before she could say anything else, Ruby was at the door in a flash of rose petals.
"See you, Weiss!" With a wink and another flash of rose petals, she was gone, leaving only a paper rose on the cash register. After a few quiet moments, another voice piped up.
"You've got it bad, huh?" Weiss whirled around to see Coco standing in the doorway to the back room, her shades lowered to reveal eyes shimmering with mirth.
"I don't-How dare-I-How long have you been standing there?" Weiss burst out, unable to string a coherent sentence together. Coco pushed her glasses back up on her face, an infuriating smile on her lips.
"Long enough to see that you and her would make an adorable couple." When Weiss didn't respond, she added, "What? No scathing retort? You're losing your edge, Schnee." When the heiress began to stutter and hurl accusations again, Coco just laughed.
"Hey, I can see that you're dying to chase after her. So go."
"I-You-What?" Weiss was caught off guard once again by Coco's suggestion.
"You like the girl. So go get her. I'll cover your shift." When Weiss gave her a questioning glare, the fashionista shrugged. "I guess I'm a hopeless romantic, okay? Now get out of here before I change my mind." Weiss didn't need any more provocation.
Weiss caught up to her within a few minutes. Ruby hadn't gone too far, so it wasn't too difficult.
"Ruby!" Weiss called out, and instantly the magician turned around.
"Weiss! I thought you were at work."
"I was, but Coco offered to cover my shift." Weiss replied, intentionally leaving out the reason why. Ruby beamed.
"That's great! You can come get some coffee with me. Come on!" Ruby grabbed Weiss's arm, refusing to take no for an answer. Not that Weiss would have refused anyways.
They stopped at a quaint little cafe, with Ruby insisting that she pay for Weiss and then dragging the heiress to a table by the window.
"I still can't believe you got a frappuccino. It's 40 degrees outside!" Weiss exclaimed, hands tightly wrapped around her chai latte. Ruby chuckled.
"What can I say? It's delicious." Ruby replied after taking a sip. Weiss glanced worriedly at the scythe-wielder's drink.
"You didn't get decaf, did you? Oh no. The last thing the world needs is a Ruby Rose hopped up on sugar and caffeine." Ruby pretended to pout, and Weiss looked away so she wouldn't have to look at her teammate's adorable, irresistible face. Ruby was the master of puppy dog eyes.
"Hey, I'm not that bad! I actually have a lot of caffeine throughout the day." Weiss scoffed.
"That explains a lot. Why don't you try cutting back?" Ruby shook her head at this.
"Nope. I can't." Weiss furrowed her brow.
"You can't? Why not?"
"My semblance requires a lot of energy. One time my dad got on a health kick and made Yang and I stop eating dessert for a week. I almost had to go to the hospital. Depending on how much I use it, I need about double the regular calorie intake for someone my size." Weiss was surprised. She had always been somewhat jealous of Ruby's semblance, especially since conjuring up glyphs wasn't necessarily useful in a scientific setting. She often wondered why Ruby didn't always do all her work sped up, but this explained it.
"Is that usually the secret to your magic tricks? Your semblance?" Weiss asked. Ruby nodded.
"A large chunk of them, at least. I don't do all of them like that. It feels like cheating, y'know?" Weiss nodded, even though she really had no idea what Ruby meant. At that moment, Ruby took her by the hand and led her out of the shop.
"C'mon! I have something cool to show you!"
Ruby's idea of 'something cool' was the top of a huge apartment complex. She scaled the fire escape while dragging Weiss along for what was one of the most nerve-wracking climbs of her life.
"Remind me why I agreed to this again." Weiss muttered, scowling.
"Because it's really cool up here and because you're my friend and you love me." Ruby replied. Weiss smiled slightly, but felt her heart sink at the word 'friend.' She felt selfish even thinking about it. The heiress was already lucky enough to have a friend like Ruby, and who in their right mind would ask for more?
"Also...Um...I didn't bring you up here just because I like the view. I mean, I do like it! But...Well, here." For once, Ruby just handed her a paper rose. No theatrics. Or so Weiss thought. The moment she took it, the rose disintegrated into petals, which all had the same message. Date me?
Weiss looked at Ruby, who wore a sheepish grin and was already beginning to ramble.
"I know that we're only just now starting to be good friends and I'm probably really annoying and you might not even like girls but I figured it was worth a shot and you're really pretty and nice and I like you so I was hoping you liked me too and I-"
"Ruby!" Ruby stopped dead in the middle of her sentence, looking hopeful.
"Of course I'll date you, you dolt."
Sorry about the short chapter! Hopefully the ending will make up for it! Also hopefully I'll be less sick next time I write this. Anyways, please review if you have anything you want to say.
As always, thank you for reading and have a great day.
