The day passed by Katerina and I exchanging stories and having a pillow fight. I had heard so many bad things about her by at least … everyone but if she was just a friend, she wouldn't make a bad one.
But by the late evening, I could feel my stomach clenching up from not having any food. I sat down on the sofa and curled up into a ball. I fell asleep. Katerina must have thought that I was just generally sleeping because she didn't wake me.
I was awoken early the next morning by Katerina shaking me. I groaned and turned over.
"Marie, are you okay?" Katerina asked.
"No," I murmured.
"What's wrong?" Katerina asked.
"I'm hungry," I murmured.
"Damn," she said.
I heard lots of rummaging and banging. Then finally the smell of food wasted towards me. Eggs?
"Sit up," Katerina said.
Obediently, I summoned all my strength and sat up. I gobbled down the omelet quickly and then drifted off to sleep. When I woke, I was feeling much better. I sat up on the couch and sighed. Katerina was sitting on the edge of the bed.
That's when the door opened. I looked up but Katerina didn't. Stephan stood in the doorway.
"Hello Katherine, hello Marie," he said quietly.
"Two days I've been waiting! I'm supposed to be free of Klaus's compulsion by now! he's supposed to be dead!" Katerina said through gritted teeth.
"We ran into complications," Stephan said.
"Like what?" I asked.
"It doesn't really matter," Stephan said. "I just need to find him. Do you have any idea where he might be?"
Suddenly Katerina used her speed to pin Stephan to the wall around the corner where I couldn't see them. I held back my wolf. I heard her say something but just at that moment I heard the door open. I shrank back into the couch.
"Klaus, you're back," I heard her say.
Klaus walked in the door, shortly followed by Elijah. I stared at Elijah. Had he known I was here all along? If he had I would kill him. Katerina walked around the corner holding Stephan by his jacket. What was she doing?
"Look who decided to come for a visit," Katerina said.
"You just keep popping up don't you," Klaus sighed as Elijah silently closed the door and gave me 'are you alright?' look. I stared at him in rage. I was in Klaus's frikkin' apartment and I had been for two days and he was asking me whether I was alright.
"I need your help," Stephan said quietly. "For my brother."
"Well, whatever it is, he's going to have to wait a tick," Klaus said. "You see, I have an obligation to my brother that requires my immediate attention."
Klaus walked past Stephan and Elijah walked up to him.
"You understand how important family is or you wouldn't be here," Elijah said to Stephan. "My brother gave me his word that he would reunite me with my own."
I stared in confusion. He buried them in the sea. Was he going to go and find them or something?
"And so I shall," Klaus said from behind Elijah.
I hadn't even noticed Klaus standing behind Elijah. Elijah turned to face him but Klaus shoved a dagger in his chest.
"No!" I screamed as I ran forwards but Katerina stopped me.
I felt my wolf rising up in anger and sadness as Elijah said something. I couldn't control the shift. I changed into my wolf form and bit down hard of Katerina's arm. She screamed in surprise but kicked me backwards so that I flung into the wall. I lay there in my wolf form trembling. I had no idea why I was trembling but I was.
I felt myself shift back into my human form and tears trickled silently down my cheeks. I didn't dare move forwards to Elijah. Klaus would kill me. I blocked out everything and just stared at Elijah's dead body, like I had done when we were in Stephan's basement.
"Now, what am I going to do with you?" Klaus muttered.
I turned my head to see that he had pinned Stephan up against the wall. Being sensible, Stephan didn't struggle. A few minutes later Klaus stabbed Stephan with a stake or something.
"Do you feel that? It's scraping against your heart," Klaus said. "The slightest little movement and you're dead."
Stephan cried out in pain.
"He's just trying to help his brother," Katerina said quietly from in between Elijah and me.
"The witches said you had a cure," Stephan said weakly. "Make me a deal. Just give me the cure and I'll do whatever you want."
Stephan still had that stake in his chest but at that comment Klaus pulled it out and left Stephan to collapse to the ground whilst he went over to the counter.
"Trouble is, I don't know if you'd be any good to me anymore," Klaus sighed as he poured some blood into a glass. I grimaced. "The way you are now, you're just shy of useless."
"I heard about this one vampire," Klaus began, "Crazy bloke, always on and off the wagon for decades. When he was off, he was magnificent. 1917 he went into Monterey and wiped out an entire migrant village … a true ripper," Klaus said standing up. "Sound familiar?"
"I haven't been that way in a very long time," Stephan said quietly.
"Well, that's the vampire that I could make a deal with," Klaus smiled as he took a sip of his drink. "That is the kind of talent I can use when I leave this town. Katerina, come here," Klaus said as he held out a hand for her.
Slowly and unhappily, Katerina walked forwards and unwillingly placed her hand in Klaus's. Klaus then took a much tighter grip and bit her wrist. Katerina yelped.
"No, no, no," she murmured as she looked at her wrist.
Klaus then bit into his own wrist and fed her his blood. She wiped her mouth on her sleeve and then her wrist began to heal.
"You want your cure?" Klaus asked as blood trickled from his mouth down to his chin. I cringed in the corner. "There it is."
Klaus wiped away the blood from his chin with his hand and sighed.
"You blood is the cure," Stephan said.
"You gotta love mother nature," Klaus smiled. "Let's talk, you and I."
Klaus took Stephan around to the counter. I sat in the corner. My gaze turned back to Elijah's body. I didn't even dare move towards it. I didn't even dare to move.
I tuned out of what the hybrid was doing. I tuned out of everything. I tuned out so much that I could hear my own hear beating away slowly. Beat … beat … beat … beat … beat. Elijah was dead and this time, I had no chance of un-daggering him. Last time Elena and I had managed it but this time … this time Elijah was going to have to stay dead. Dead for as long as Klaus wanted him to be dead for.
Even though I had tuned out of everything, somehow I was still aware of what was going on. Klaus was trying to persuade Stephan to go with him. Once he was persuaded Klaus made him drink a blood bag, and another. I wasn't counting. I wasn't thinking. My mind was blank even though I was aware of what was happening.
Finally I tuned out completely. There was silence other than my heart beating. There was just Elijah and me.
"It's okay, you're doing great," Elijah smiled as I breathed heavily.
"You … you think so?" I asked trying to catch my breath.
"Yes, of course. It's taking you less and less time to change by will. I mean, you started off at ten minutes," Elijah smiled.
"And where am I now?" I asked looking up at him.
"Five," he smiled.
I smiled in return.
"Elijah!" I called out into the house. "Elijah! Elijah, it's not funny anymore!" I shouted.
I walked along the corridor, taking one foot after the other. Where the hell was he? I had made dinner and even laid out the table.
"Your food will get cold!" I warned. There was no answer. "Fine, I'll eat by myself."
I turned around and began walking down the stairs when Elijah appeared in front of me. I jumped back in surprise and held back my wolf.
"You know it's rude to start a meal without everyone else," Elijah smiled.
I smiled and sighed as I walked down the stairs with Elijah following me.
"Don't be a grump," he said.
"Perhaps I like being a grump," I answered.
Suddenly we were at the kitchen table. I let out a yelp of utter surprise and he laughed. I playfully hit his shoulder before we tucked into our meal.
"Now what to do with you little wolf," Klaus sighed.
I didn't take my eyes off Elijah but I was aware that Klaus was crouching next to me. I was also aware of the smell of human blood that clung to the room. It made me want to throw up.
"I think I could make use of you on our little trip," Klaus said more to himself than to me.
A small tear trickled down my face. I needed Elijah. He was the one who helped to control my shifts. He had trained me to control my shifts unless they were too powerful to control. Elijah had helped me through so much. What had I done for him? I had been present at three of his deaths.
"Don't be like that love," Klaus sighed. "We're going to go and have some fun."
I watched in silence as Elijah was fitted with a coffin and hauled off into the travel crate that I assumed had the rest of his siblings inside. I wasn't listening to Klaus and Stephan but I had nothing better to do, so I tuned into their conversation.
"I've been around a long time Stephan," Klaus said. "I rarely get played for a fool. Besides, she won't get far. You two will help me see to that."
I lifted my head and looked at Klaus for a moment and then Stephan. I wasn't sure who I felt safer around. Stephan was now a ripper but Klaus had killed Elijah and the rest of his siblings. It was an extremely hard choice so in the end I decided that keeping away from both would be best.
"What is it you really want from me?" Stephan asked.
"All will be explained in time once we leave this tragic little town," Klaus said as he put his hand on Stephan's shoulder.
"Then are we done here?" Stephan asked. "Can we go?"
"No quite," Klaus replied. "You see I have a gift for you, Stephan." Klaus then turned around. "Come here, sweetheart. Don't be afraid."
A girl who looked about three years older than me walked over to Klaus. A sick feeling rose in my stomach.
"See, I want to make sure you honor our deal, Stephan," Klaus said as he brushed the girl's hair away from her neck. "That you'll be of use to me."
Klaus bit into her neck and my stomach immediately clenched into a tight ball. I moved my eyes to the floor as the girl cried.
"I could have compelled her to behave, but a real ripper enjoys the hunt," I heard Klaus say but I didn't dare to look up at him or the girl … or Stephan for that matter.
I heard the girl's feet running away from us as she screamed. I stayed where I was as Stephan disappeared and then Klaus. I didn't dare to move for the fear that Klaus would come back and make me suffer was too high.
So I stayed and blocked out all the noises around me and just concentrated on how my heart was beating.
