I sound like some type of advertiser when I tell you people to keep reading. Haha. Enjoy!

"I'm sorry, but I don't know who you are."

This person's- Maxon, I guess- jaw drops in shock. Without looking away from me, he dismisses Gavril with the wave of his hand, who bows and leaves.

"America?" he says softly. I nod my head up and down slowly, looking up at him in confusion.

"That's my name, and who are you?"

"I'm Maxo-" he starts.

"Well, I know that!" I snap, but when I see his utterly hopeless and despairing expression, I look down in shame. "I'm sorry, but can you tell me who you are?"

"God, America, do you really forget who I am?" Maxon asks, his voice wavering. I nod, still looking down.

"I guess, but I'm not sure if I forgot you, considering the fact that I don't know who you are."

"Oh, no, no, no," Maxon mutters. "Nurse!" Not a second after he calls, my nurse comes rushing in.

"Y-yes, Your Majesty?" she answers with a rushed curtsy. Maxon turns back to face me.

"Tell Nurse Kaia what you just asked me," he commands.

"Um, can you tell me who he is?" I say, gesturing to Maxon. Nurse Kaia's eyes widen at my question. She quickly composes herself, though, and faces Maxon, beckoning for him to follow her. Maxon gets up and follows her out the door, but not before gazing back at me for a second.

I hear hushed murmurs from outside my door, but I can only distinguish a few quiet words.

"She…remember…I know … do something...we will…"

Finally, after an eternity of trying to make out the whispers, the two people come back in. Maxon sits at the edge of my bed, while Nurse Kaia comes directly in front of me, looking me straight in the eye.

"Do you remember why you're here at the palace?" she asks, as if this is a test.

"Of course. It's for the Selection," I say, dragging out my reply, confused. Nurse Kaia nods and writes something on her clipboard, looking at Maxon with an 'I told you so' look on her face.

"Do you remember who the other remaining girls are?" she continues.

"Yeah…they're Kriss, Celeste, and Elise," I reply, staring at her weirdly. She nods and repeats what she did after I answered the first question.

Besides the Prince, who are the remaining members of the Royal Family?"

"King Clarkson and Queen Amberly," I reply without missing a beat.

"Do you remember everything? Like, your whole life?" she questions right after.

"Well, of course!" I exclaim. "Why wouldn't I?" I feel like I'm an experiment being analyzed with her cautious and precise movements

Nurse Kaia looks at me curiously, then asks, "So what's the name of this Selection's Prince?"

"Oh, it's-" I stop, my sentence falling apart. I know everything, my family, the Elite, Gavril and the rebels, King Clarkson's threats, and even Aspen's appearance at the palace, but whenever I think of the Selection, the spot that should have the Prince's name is blank.

"I-I don't remember," I say, not in sadness, but in wonder. Of how I could forget our Prince, heir to the throne of Illea! However, I do feel a pang of longing for something- or maybe someone-, but it's as if a chunk of my memory has been taken out.

Nurse Kaia does a double take after I answer her question, clearly expecting me to say the name of the person.

"Oh?" she asks, my reply sparking interest. "Tell me more."

"Well, I remember my family, Mom, Dad, May, Gerad, Kota, Kenna, and now, Astra, my niece. (I know I called her Lyris, but after checking, I realized that her name was Astra! Sorry!)

I also know all the Elite, oh, and I remember that Asp-" I stop abruptly, refraining from telling them about Aspen, my ex, coming to the palace. There's a nagging feeling at the back of my mind, saying that I shouldn't say anything about him, and if I do, it would be in private. But in private with who?

Obviously, I didn't say anything about Gavril and the rebels, since I would most likely be executed or stripped of my Caste.

"Um, yeah, I remember everything, but the Prince of Illea, I guess," I cover awkwardly, hoping no one caught my mistake. I'm not sure why I kept it in myself.

Maxon's expression turns from slightly hopeful to absolutely crushed, like someone threw a weight on his shoulders, leaving him to carry it. Nurse Kaia, however, looks more intrigued than ever. She looks at me curiously, as if begging me to tell more. But what more could I tell her? I've already said everything that I know.

"Hmm, well before I leave, I'll just tell you that Maxon is the Prince of Illea." Nurse Kaia stands up and strides out the door, leaving me to gape at her.

Soon after she leaves, Maxon stands up to go, his expression showing how uncomfortable he's feeling around me. I feel like I should care more about him, but when I try, I feel nothing. Nothing at all, not even a shred of compassion, care, or fondness. I still feel like I should, though, and that something's missing.

I lie down, thinking that it'd be best to just get some sleep, but I stare up at the ceiling, knowing that there should be more to what people have told me. I just don't know what it is.

Occasionally, I hear a desperate voice in my ear, saying things like, "You just told me you loved me," or "Please, please remember me," until I block everything out.

A sharp slam causes me to wake up with a start. I hadn't even realized that I'd fallen asleep. Nurse Kaia stands at the entrance with a worried look on her face.

"Lady America, I have some, ah, news for you. Would you like me to call Prince Maxon in too?" she asks.

"Okay," I say, for some reason feeling the need to have him by my side. Nurse Kaia nods stiffly and leaves to fetch Maxon. After I tell her, I immediately begin questioning myself. Why did I want Prince Maxon, someone I don't even know, or remember, to be with me?

A few minutes later, she comes back in with Maxon following her. He sits down in his previous position, running his hands through his hair. I can't help but notice how handsome he is.

"After asking you a few questions and talking with my colleagues," Nurse Kaia starts. "I've come up with a hypothesis. I think that you have gotten a slight case of amnesia. However, in many ways, it's not exactly slight.

"After the recent events and you getting shot, you have lost all memory of Prince Maxon. We're not positive of how it works, as you still remember the Selection, even though it's closely tied to Prince Maxon, but we do know that you do not remember anything about him.

"We don't know when you'll remember him again, or if you will at all."

At this, Nurse Kaia stands to leave, but not before saying a few last words to Maxon, who is outright frozen in horror. A thousand things flit through his alarmed stare, and they come and go too quickly to comprehend.

"Oh, and Prince Maxon? If Lady America never regains her memory, you might want to eliminate her."

Okay, that wasn't even a good cliffhanger. So I really hope I don't get any "mad" reviews. I'll give you virtual cookies! (::) (::).
