Chapter 14: The Rift
The goodbye had been quick. No one blubbered, no one threw fits of anger or tried to make her stay, and it was the way Vega liked it. She and Xena stood in front of the grand ship their belongings packed up, or at least what they deemed necessary. Xena gave a hug to Bulma, but both girls felt they would see each other again and kept on smiling instead of sprouting tears. Bulma's mom, Bunny packed the fridge with goodies and even gave Xena a knapsack of delicious cookies and other baked goods.
As Vega went over the plans and new implants with the doctor, Xena looked around for Gohan who had promised to come see them off. Her eyes scanned the skies hopeful and then lit up when two lights spit out in the distance.
"There they are!" Xena shouted and waved to the skies laughing. Vega paused in looking over the schematics and shoved them back at the doctor.
"About damn time… i wasn't waiting forever." Vega grumbled crossing her arms over her chest. Both gohan and Goku landed with flourish. Gohan immediately ran up to hug his cousin, the two of them holding tight like twin siblings. The sentimental moment had Vega turning her eyes away, and sadly upon Goku who could only stare, and frown.
Her lips scowled in return and she held out a hand in a wave. "Kakarott…"
"Vega… are you dead set on going?" He didn't yell, didn't raise his voice… the statement was just a bit bitter, a bit disappointed, it seemed he already knew the answer to it.
"Mop up your tears, Kakarott. I've my own path, as you've yours. I'll be back to kick your keester and remind you just who of us is the better fighter."
That brought on a smile. Goku's face softened and he gave a heavy sigh. Walking close he lifted a hand and rubbed the top of her head. Her admired her cheeks going pink, and the smile widened. "I'll keep that in mind. So long as you promise to come back." He tilted her head up to stare down. When that stare lasted more than five seconds Vega averted her eyes the blush on her cheeks growing even redder.
"Yeah, we'll be back. You haven't see the last of me Kakarott."
"Good, it's a promise then…" surprising everyone around them Goku leaned down and gave her a firm kiss. Vega's body tensed up and her hands lifted up to press on his chest and push away… but she let the kiss linger, let herself take in one last deep breath and taste of him. The sounds of their shocked children, and stuttering friends became a buzz in her ears. Her lips matched his, the quick fever, the slow roll inside her chest making her cling onto him just a little longer.
Bulma cleared her throat loudly a few times before they finally parted. Vega's cheeks were burning and her hands stuff into her pockets to keep them off the saiyan male. "Now that's what I call a goodbye… See you, Kakarott." She strutted into the ship. "Xena, wrap up your own goodbyes."
Xena, still a bit gawked, cleared her own throat and ran a hand over the back of her neck and glanced to Gohan giving him a kiss on the cheek. "Like mother like daughter… later cuz." She hurried up behind, Gohan blushing and holding his cheek and shook his head rubbing the skin grumbling.
"Girls…"
"Women…" Goku said insync with him. Together they stood, watching as the ship powered up and began to slowly ascend. Inside the ship Vega sat in the pilot seat with Xena sitting beside her, buckled in and frowning.
"Mom… can I-" she bit her tongue when Vega snapped back.
"No, you can't." She pumped the power and the ship rockets out into the atmosphere.
~4 years since Vega's Departure~
The image of Frieza's Planet came into view… all that was left of the once proud Cold Planet was the scattering of rocks and debris from a terrible explosion. The terrible power that could have caused such an explosion brought on an terrible ache in Goku's chest. He could imagine her, eyes black and cold standing just outside the atmosphere of the planet, Xena tucked safely away inside the ship, and Vega's power resonating with such anger and need for revenge.
Then in a wink all of it exploded… a quick blast sent barrelling down into the planet's core causing it to rupture and explode. "An eye, for an eye, Frieza. Even if you are alive somewhere you have no home planet, no one to carry a legacy with." Her lips smirked evilly, "be grateful I decided to be so merciful."
Goku awoke with a start, his eyes wide and his heart galloping in his chest. The roar of the ship engines buzzed in his ear, but it was a sound he was used to, and it may as well had been deathly quiet. Slowly sitting up he pressed a hand to his face shaking and wiping the damp skin. "Oh man… that dream again."
He tossed off the covers, letting his feet press on the cold steel of the floor. His vision continued to blur trying to shake the sleep. He slowly rose to his feet, and the bathroom spalshing water on his face and shaking off the tension in his shoulders he began to stretch, making his way up to the main floor of the spaceship.
The control panel blinked at him. It was like a sort of game trying to find the right buttons to push, and levers to pull. Goku wasn't all that knowledgeable about technology, but images of Vega from their previous journey proved useful to him. He was also lucky to have brought Piccolo with him to help the guidance. He would have taken Gohan, but Chichi had been determined to catch Gohan up on his studies. Besides, Chichi hadn't been all that thrilled he was going off to find Vega in the first place.
"If you want to spend your time chasing after that Princess Saiyan Hussy, then do it on your own, I'm not going to allow you to drag our son through space just to clear your own conscience!"
The shrill of her voice brought on a shudder. "Oh man…" That's all he needed was a reminder of what waited for him at home. He checked the maps and scan results from their routes last night… and found nothing.
"Not here either…" Goku grit his teeth as his scanners picked up no signal of Vega's ship from the vicinity. "Where in the universe could she have gone? Bulma said she should be running out of fuel so they can't be that far away from Earth now, can they?"
"Unless they planned to never come back. Why don't you give up the search Goku, I think it's clear we're never gonna see that Saiyan Princess again." Piccolo spoke from behind him, he floated above the floor in a meditative state his face dead serious.
"No… she promised she and Xena would come back. Something's happened and I know it." He sat cross legged on the chair staring at the charts with a hard frown. "Maybe she was right… maybe Frieza was still alive and he-"
The screen blipped at him shaking him out of his worry. Disappointment ran over his face when he noticed it was just a transmission from home. "It must be Bulma…" He pressed a button the screen popping up and Bulma's face appearing. The curly afro hairdo she had changed looked like it was inspired by the gravity defying do the Saiyans possessed.
"Did you find her?" Bulma asked her eyes hopeful. "Did the scanners pick anything up?"
"No, she doesn't appear to be anywhere nearby. We may be chasing ghosts according to Piccolo."
"Don't talk like that… I don't want to think about what might have happened. Maybe she just slipped past the radar, I mean you guys DID take that detour to the Yardrat system."
Yardrat… what started as a quick pit stop for supplies and repairs turned into a great training session. The people on that planet taught him so much, about techniques and strategy, they were all very wise and peaceful. He was glad to see Frieza's reign hadn't touched them.
"Either way you guys should get back. You've been gone for months and Chichi's been in and out of here with Gohan waiting for you two to come back." Bulma leaned back in her chair. "Vega's a big girl, she and Xena will figure something out and they'll be back, I have faith in that."
"Alright… we're actually pretty close to home so we'll be there in a couple hours. Call Chichi for me and have them meet us at Capsule."
"Already on it! See you soon, Goku!" Bulma hanged up and sighed rubbing her temples. She glanced at the phone, preparing for the headache that would come with the call to Chichi's house. Picking up the receiver she dialed.. and listened to the dull ring as she waited for an answer.
~At Mt. Paos~
Gohan watched wide eyed as his mother chased his terror tutor off the property. Chichi's obsession with an education had her hiring the man to push his studies to the next level, but the strict professor was not only harsh with his words, but his habit of "whipping" students into shape had Chichi second guessing his influence in her son's life. The coup de grace was when the abusive Mr. Shu had put down Goku for never being around, and calling him worthless and that Gohan fought to measure up to him.
It had boiled her, sure Goku was flaky, but he was no dead beat. Goku was the sweetest man she knew despite his lack of a brain and a steady job. After all who was it that went fishing for dinner, gathered firewood, and made sure that she and the rest of the world were safe from harm?
It pained her to admit it but she missed the man. She could stay angry and bitter about his affections towards Vega, but that didn't stop her from loving him. Chichi straightened herself out as she entered the house. She fussed with her hair and clothes, and cleared her throat. "Gohan, clean yourself up and then I want you back on those books young man."
Gohan poked his head out of his room grinning. "Okay, thanks mom!" He gave a chuckle as he went to the bathroom and wiped the blood away from where he'd gotten whipped across the face. The ring of the phone buzzed in his ear, and he vaguely heard his mother answer with a brisk, "hello?"
"Chichi? It's Bulma."
"Oh, Hello Bulma I wasn't expecting you to call. I don't suppose you've heard from my no good husband have you?" She started washing dishes holding the receiver against her ear and shoulder.
"Actually that's why i've called. I just got off the receiver with Goku and he and Piccolo are on their way back. They're a couple hours out but they'll be here soon."
The plate slipped out of her hands and she cradled the phone in both hands now. "WHAT!? Really? Goku's coming home! Oh I'm so happy… ah wait.. what about Vega?"
"No word from her, but Goku and I agree that if Vega decides to come back, she'll come back. We'll just let her be and do what she needs to."
Chichi couldn't hide the smug satisfaction off her face. "That's great to hear… I'll collect Gohan and we'll see you soon!" She hangs up and screams at Gohan. "Gohan put up your books into a bag and get ready! We're going to South City!"
She turned around and saw Gohan had already packed his bag and was sweating and panting unable to hold in his excitement. "I'm ready! Let's go!"
~Capsule Corps~
The landing pad was prepped, and the calculations for Goku and Piccolo's arrival were set. Bulma sat back down tracking their ship as they made their final approach. She poured her fifth cup of coffee giving a deep sigh as she took the scent of the dark liquid. She went to take the first easing sip, and ended up jolting and spilling it down her top. "Crap!"
The loud obnoxious beeping from the transmitter had her teeth set in the growl. "Goku you have the worst…. wait a minute..." She read the number… it wasn't Goku's ship. This number was unfamiliar to her. Startled she pressed the answer button and gave a gasp as Vega's wounded face flashed across the screen.
"Vega!"
"Bulma… Where's Kakarott?" She breathed heavily holding her side as she sat in the chair.
"In space… but he'll be arriving back soon, we're making the final preparations for his arrival right now." Bulma eyed her and fear pitted in her gut. "What in the name of Kami happened to you?"
"I don't have much time to explain. I'm not sure how long I can hold this transmission. I'm on my way back to Earth, but I'm not alone. Frieza's on his way, in fact he's bypassed right by me, he'll be touching down at least an hour before I will even break the atmosphere."
"You're kidding!" Bulma jumped to her feet her face fear struck. "Frieza's on his way here? Why? How did he survive?"
"I don't have time to explain." the reception was fading in and out. "My ship isn't fast enough to catch up so the only one who has a chance against him is Kakarott. Tell him when he touches down to suit up and man up."
"Vega you're the one who defeated him last time, how are you so sure that Goku…"
"I don't know if he can beat him or not, but I'm telling you now that if Kakarott can't hold him off til I get there…" she let out a shuddering breath. "You can kiss the Earth goodbye." there was a dreaded silence followed by static of a cut reception.
I think I rushed this a bit, not to mention misnaming the chapter but I felt the filler I had made between the years were a bit boring and drawn out so instead I went with a time skip instead. I hope you guys are okay with it.
