The next morning I woke up to the phone ringing, I dragged myself out of bed to answer it and all I heard was a high pitched scream.
"Who the hell is this?" I asked annoyed at being woken up so early. Well it was only about 8:00 but I had stayed up late last night to console Jane who had another cry fest even though Charlie had left a week ago.
"LLLLLLIIIIIIZZZZZZZZZZZZIIIIIIEEEEEE" came from the other end of the line. "It's Charlotte! Guess what? Colin asked me to marry him and I said yes!" said Charlotte excitedly, I was in a shock. How could she? He was just so boring and annoying, but if Charlotte was happy then so was I.
"Char, that's great!" I said as enthusiastically as I could "When's the wedding?" I asked because even if I didn't like the groom much I could I could be excited about helping her plan her wedding.
"Oh, well Colin proposed because he didn't want to have a long distance relationship and he is being moved back to England to work at De Bourg software! So unless we want to get married in a week we're getting married in England in just over a month! Isn't it exciting?" she gushed, I was conflicted about this, I didn't want her to rush in to marriage but she seemed so happy. "Will you be my maid of honor?" she asked "If you say yes, you have to come with me to England and plan the wedding!" she declared.
"Charlotte I would love to be your maid of honor, and not just because of the vacation time, I can't wait to help you plan the wedding and everything!" I said excited.
"Oh, great" she said in a I-would-hug-you-if-I-was-there voice "So the itinerary is that Collin, you, and I will leave in on Wednesday and then stay there for about three weeks before everyone else arrives and then in about a week, assuming no disasters, Colin and I will get married and then everyone, including you, will go home and Colin and I will go on our honeymoon."
"Okay that sounds great!" I said "Why don't we meet for lunch to talk about the finer details?" I asked.
"Sure!" said Charlotte "Twelve at the new place you are working at?" she suggested.
"Perfect, and now I need to get ready for work so bye" I said
"Bye" she said and hung up. I sighed and told myself to be happy for my friend and not to worry because Charlotte never did anything rashly.
I walked from the hall where the phone cradle was and went back my bed room and looked at the clock. It was 8:30 and I had to leave for work in about twenty minutes, so I got on some clothes and went to make breakfast. When I was almost finished Jane came in, she had tear stains on her cheeks and her nose was all red, my hate for Charlie and Caroline doubled. Jane was insecure and he had taken her feelings and kicked them aside.
"Hey" I said softly "How are you doing?"
"I'm okay" she said softly "But, Lizzie I'm determined to get over it, we won't talk about it anymore. I'll get over it." she declared, I wasn't sure it would be that easy but I nodded, anything to pull her out of the rut she was in.
I smiled and asked "are you going to school today?" she had taken two days off last week under the pretense of being sick.
"No, I can't miss any more days of school, and the kids probably miss me" she said.
"Ohh, guess what! Charlotte's getting married!" I said
"Oh that's wonderful" said Jane "but if I want to be ready for work I need to get ready" She grabbed some food and walking back to her room to get dressed, I presumed.
"Okay well I'm going to work now so bye!" I yelled after her. I heard her yell an acknowledgement and then I walked out of the apartment.
When I got to the café Ed was already there and we made food for the shop together, the morning was pretty normal and then Maddie, Ed and I took turns eating at a table when it was Maddie's turn I walked up to her and asked her if I could have a month off because I had to leave the country to plan a friend's wedding.
She looked at me and said "If you can find a replacement then sure" and she went back to eating and I went back to the counter. Summer was starting in a week so I could probably get Kitty or Lydia to do it or maybe even Jane if she wasn't busy.
The rest of the day was normal until I got home and found Jane talking to our aunt who lives in Florida somewhere now, we don't see her much because it takes us so long to get there and Jane is busy for most of the year.
"Yeah…really?...That would be great…I'd love to, aunt Rachel…Okay, bye" she was talking while walking around in a circle. When she hung up she turned around to me and said "Lizzie! Guess what! Aunt Rachel asked me to come down to Florida for a visit" she said excited "And I said yes! So I'm going to Florida in a week for three weeks" she said jumping up and down from excitement.
"Awesome, that's going to be great! Now we will both be doing something cool this summer we can talk about!" I said, and hugged her.
"What do you mean?" she asked, I explained about the wedding plans and then she smiled "Oh that's great Lizzie now I won't be leaving you alone for three weeks." She hugged me and we grinned at each other.
"Now can you help me persuade Lydia or Kitty to take my job for a month" I asked
"Sure!" she said smiling, she called home and Kitty answered the phone. They talked but Kitty was going to some sort of camp for the summer so she couldn't cover me and just as Jane was about to hang up Lydia was given the phone and said she'd take the job as long as she got paid. I told Jane that she would and Jane relayed the massage.
So I was off to England!
