Chapter IX "Naru and Mai"
Naru's P.O.V.
Its already 7 pm and all of us were so tired from investigating but still we didn't find anything new. I'm becoming a bit frustrated that we can't even have another way to stop this spirit from hurting mai, from hurting the one that I love. Base from what okuda said, I want to prevent on using the ritual that they made if it will only endanger mai more. In that ritual, a sacrifice will be needed and that sacrifice were the one that was hurt by the spirit and in this case the one that was being hurt was mai, that means she will be the sacrifice but I don't want that to happen.
"Noll…why don't we all rest now…we could still continue tomorrow…" said mother
"of course…you may all go back to your rooms now and get some rest…just make sure that you have the charm okuda gave"
"sure…what about you naru-bou?" asked ayako
"I'll be staying here…lin…make sure that everything will be cover tonight"
"of course…I'll be watching it…" said lin
"oliver…please don't over work yourself…" said masako but I didn't said anything in return instead I just nod. I just turn my back and review everything that we did today.
"oh! Okuda…what are you doing here?" said mother and that caught my attention
"nothing…just…mari needs to see you oliver…" he said but I can see in his eyes that he is somehow sad.
"when?"
"now…it's a bit important…"
"important? Can't it wait for tomorrow? Okuda...oliver is also tired…" said father
"father…I'm fine…does mai not feeling well?"
"no…but she somehow predicted something and she need to tell it to you"
"predicted something?" asked bou-san
"yes…"he said
"hmnn…but…" said mother
"mother…I'll go see mai now…if you all want to stay here and know what she said then you can stay but if not then you can all retire to you bed" I said and just walk into the door
"then…we'll just stay here and wait…" said bou-san
"takigawa-san…aren't you tired?" asked mother
"well…a bit but all of us were aware how important the information that will came from mai…right masako?" said bou-san
"yes…"answered masako
"then you're also staying masako-chan?" asked mother to masako
"yes…"
"*sign* alright we'll all wait for you to come back here noll…" said father
"then let's go okuda…" I said as I walk outside
"please don't worry…it will only be for a while" said okuda
"ok..just be careful…" said mother. After that, me and okuda just continue to walk toward the room of mai. When we reach it, okuda open the door for me and that's when I decide to walk inside. I saw mai currently sitting in her bed with her eyes close.
"Charles? Is that you?" asked mai. Why is she asking without opening her eyes as if she can't see.
"yes…and oliver is with me since you ask me to bring him here" said okuda
"thank you…naru…can you come closer?" asked mai
"mai…you…your eyes…" I said as I come closer to her bed
"well…about that…she still can't see…after all this barrier that I placed in her room, it still isn't capable enough to cover everything and make her see but she's safe for now…" said okuda while he sit on one of the sit far from the bed of mai.
"mai…are you alright?" I asked
"I'm fine naru…don't worry about my eyes…and Charles…place the number of Akashi in a paper and give it to naru…"said mai
"mari…please…"
"I know but it's just in case so that all you need to do is contact him and he will surely help you all…"
"alright" said okuda with a toned that really don't agree with mai
"mai…who is Akashi?" I asked
"Akashi… Abe no Akashi…he is the youngest son in the abe clan and he was the one who help us create that ritual…he know how the ritual works since I won't be able to perform it and Charles don't really know what to do with it that is why you need him in case you decided to do the ritual" said mai
"we will not use that ritual that you created...i'm looking for another to get rid of this spirit…"I said as my hand just reflexively reach mai's hand
"but…naru you will be needing his help…he isn't just capable on helping in the ritual but…he also has an ESP that is why you will be needing his help…so please just for once…listen to me and call him now…"
"mai…mai…what did you predict that okuda said when he fetch me from the base?" I asked
"about that…he…the spirit…still trying to get me…and we don't know what he will do next…" she said and this made me worry
"what do you mean?"
"mari…" said okuda who is now beside mai
"naru…just listen and call him…that spirit is way to dangerous than you all imagine…he will may not kill me but seeks to make me his"
"NO! STOP! Mai…you will not be his and you will just stay here…okuda will protect you…all of us will protect you…I promise that…"
"naru…I know…but please…please…call him ok?"
"alright…okuda…"
"here is his number…introduce yourself unto him and tell him about mari…I know he will be rushing over here immediately if it's about mari…" said okuda as he hand over a piece of paper unto me
"alright"
"naru..."
"mai…just trust us and we will succeed…okuda…with her at all times…
"oliver…mari is important to me more than my life…"
"Charles…can I have a chat with naru…alone?"
"of course…I'll just be staying outside…" said okuda but before he leave, he kiss the forehead of mai then leave the room.
"naru…" said mai, I somehow felt a bit awkward or rather uncomfortable that the two of us were now alone in her room.
"Mai…about the letter you send to me…I want you to know that I plan to end my engagement with masako…" I said
"why?"
"because….because she isn't the one that I love and my parents knows that…but father still insisted about this whole marriage or engagement…"
"naru…you may not love masako now but eventually you will learn how to love her"
"no…even if the girl that I love will disappear or die…I will never love another woman again…she is my life…the only one who capture my heart and no one else…"
"naru…masako loves you so much…"
"she is fully aware that I don't love her…she also know who is the girl that I love…that is why…it won't really matter to her if I cancel our engagement"
"but...naru…"
"mai…do you even know who is the girl that I love?"
"no…"
"she disappear 5 years ago…I keep on looking for her…I came back and all they have told me was she still wasn't found and don't have even a single idea where she is…I got engage to masako even though my parents know that I love another woman but my father doesn't acknowledge her…but I didn't give up until yasuhara finally found some information of her whereabouts…it a relief for me that I can at least feel that I'll be able to find her…but then yasuhara gave an information that she was already engage to be married to someone else…"
"naru…don't tell me…"
"let me finish mai…"
"ah…ok…"
"yasuhara also gave an information before that she was re-adapt and became the starting point for them to start looking for her…but before we came here our last case was just a day ago and because okuda was the one who requested this case to my father that I need to immediately see this case…while yasuhara and keichi-san will be going to the house where they said that she might be since one of her friend was a friend of keichi-san told us that she is currently here in japan…then yasuhara came here and said that she was here…then finally I meet her but she was blind…okuda was carrying her like a bride…seeing her in that state made my heartache…and now…she is right here…suffering because of the spirit in this house…" I said as I look at mai and saw that she was now crying
"naru…*sob*sob*sob*"
"it's you mai…"I finally said it
"no…it can't be…" said mai as she now covers her face with her hands
"no mai…it's you and only you…so believe me mai…"
"but naru…"
"mai…please believe me…I love you more than myself…I will protect you…so please…believe me…" I said as I go much closer to mai and hug her as I finally confess my true feelings for her.
"naru…I-I-…."
"don't…I'll wait for your answer after this case…by then I want you to promise me that you will be strong…and wait for me…can you?" I said as I now loosen my hug to her and just face her while holding her face. She then place her hand above mine that is still in her face while her face slowly ease up and then finally smile even just a little, with that I finally saw her smile even if it's a little bit. By that I can do my best in order to solve this case so that mai will be safe again.
"I will wait for you naru…"she said
"right…so rest now…I need to go back to the base now…they are all waiting for me…" I said as I let go of her face and stand up.
"naru…call him…you will need him when I suddenly disappear…"
"what do you mean? You won't disappear…that spirit won't be able to go in here and get you…"
"right…but still call him ok?"
"I promise…now rest…" I said
"ok…" she said as she now lay down in her bed to rest
"I'll be going back now and I will call okuda back…"
"yes…thank you naru…" she said. After that I go outside and there okuda is just waiting across the door of mai's room.
"done?"
"yeah…thank you…I'll be going back to the base now…"
"oliver…if you truly love her…listen to her and call Akashi…you may see him as a rival for mari's love but mari will still choose you…but Akashi will protect mai will everything that he knows in order to save her just like the time when we are just testing ritual…akashi's brother was the sacrifice but the spirit…started to hurt mai before it leave the monk that it possess and then the ritual was finish because of him since he doesn't want to see mari get hurt anymore…that is why…you need to call him and trust him…" he said
"alright…I will do as you have said…" I said and just go back to the base. When I reach the base everyone were waiting for my return. Everyone are sitting in the sofa that is inside the room except for lin who watching the monitors.
"ah! Noll…how is she?" asked mother while father is beside her. Misaki-san, satou-san and haruto-san had gone home while yasuhara, keichi-san and madoka are now doing their investigation and research about this house.
"mai's fine but…"
"but?" asked ayako
"even with all the barrier that surrounds her room…her eye sight is still…"
"you mean…she's still blind" said father
"yes…"
"that's cruel…" said mother
"my little sister…when will she be able to be safe? I just can't take it anymore…she is here to forget everything that happen to her in London but this…this is happening to her…" said yuu-san who is now being hug by his lover seniichi-san while saying those sad things about mai.
"I still don't know but…lin…"
"yes?" answered lin while I go near him
"can you dial this number now?" I asked
"alright…"he said as he now begin to dial the number of that Akashi. While I explain to everyone what mai said to me.
"right now…the one that lin is currently calling is a friend of mai and okuda who help them make the ritual that mai gave to us…his name is Abe no Akashi…"
"wait! Abe! You mean he came from that famous clan of omnyouji?" asked bou-san
"yes…he is the youngest son of the Abe no clan…that is why mai and okuda were able to get permission to make those charms and rituals…it is because of their connection with them…"
"and why do you need to call him? All of you can solve this case right?" said father
"it's because mai requested it…?"
"doesn't she trust us? She knows us well or is it that she already forgotten about our abilities?" said ayako with some kind amused voice.
"I don't think so…but she said that Akashi-san will be able to help us… also okuda said to that 'if you really want to save her then listen to her and call Akashi…he will do everything in his power to help you save her' something like that" I said avoiding to say the real thing that okuda said
"but at least trust our abilities!" shouted ayako
"I'm sure that mai trust all of you but at least accepting a help from other people won't hurt you…rather will help you all to solve this case much faster" said yuu-san
"naru…phone…its him" said lin as I get the phone from lin.
"please excuse me…you now all go back and rest…we'll just continue tomorrow…" I said while they just nodded in agreement and leave for the day.
*PHONE CONVERSATION*
"hello" said the person on the other line which is Akashi-san
"hello…is this Abe no Akashi?" I asked
"yes…who is this?"
"this is shibuya kazuya from shibuya psychic research"
"ah…how may I help you shibuya-san?"
"well…the little sister of our client said that I need to call you because you can surely help us"
"the little sister? Who is it? What is her name?"
"her name is Sakai Mai…"
"SAKAI MAI! As in Mai-chan?!"
"yes…and Okuda Charles also recommended me to call you…"
"hmnn….what is it about? Psychic research group….hmnnn…don't tell me your hunting ghost?"
"yes…and we are currently doing an investigation in the house of sakai-san that is said to be hunted by spirits…then they said that mai-san was the main victim of it…okuda-san now confines her in her room and already placed a barrier to protect her from the spirit but…she is still blind…"
"still blind?"
"yes…when we arrived here…she was already blind and it seems that she can't walk properly because of the spirit…but when okuda-san gave her a charm she was able to temporarily see us but it's effect wasn't that long"
"of course…if the spirit's desire for his target then he will focus only on her and her alone with all his might…okuda knows that…that is why he is placing a barrier for her own protection…"
"I see…so can you go here?"
"I will…I'll arrive by tomorrow night…by that time i want you to keep on protecting her while I'm on my way there…and when I arrive I will keep her close to me…so that she will be safe…so by that time don't lose her"
"I will…then…we'll see you tomorrow night…thank you…"
"Of course…please…tell okuda that if he can still strengthen his barrier...keep it strong for mai-chan…she's a danger magnet and I can sense that something might happen to her…that is why please…please…keep her with all of you always…don't lose her…"
"we will…"I said and after that I ended the call.
*END OF CONVERSATION*
"Lin…tomorrow place one camera in mai's room…he said that something might happen to her and we need to keep a close eye on her…" I said to lin.
"I will…you can now rest while I keep a close eye in the monitor…" said lin. And with that I rest in the sofa and sleep in there so that by tomorrow I will have enough energy to work all day. I hope that nothing will happen to mai.
Mai's P.O.V.
I was so shock when naru confess his true feelings towards me and that what we are feeling for each other is the same. Right now, naru just left and minutes later Charles enter the room and went directly at me.
"Mari…I will try to strengthen the barrier…that is why I need your help to share some of your energy even for a little so that spirit will not entirely sense you…" said Charles
"we can't do that…he will find me…" I said
"I see…hmnn…then I will add a little of my energy to this barrier so that it will strengthen for a bit…"
"thank you Charles…"
"mari…did you tell him?"
"no…but I told him that he must call him…I know by now that he can predict that I might disappear…and with that he will tell naru to keep on eye on me…tomorrow he will be placing a camera here…"
"hmnn…mari…I will protect you…" he said as he hold my hand tightly
"I know Charles…I know…and I believe that all of this will eventually end"
"yes…it will…akashi will help us…"
"right…" I said that and with that we both started to rest. Tomorrow will be a difficult one since I know that the spirit will try his best to get me. I just hope that Akashi will arrive soon and I ask naru to call him not because I don't trust the abilities of the SPR but for the safety of everyone. Another is that, the spirit might succeed on getting me and with akashi's ESP or psychic ability he will be able to help them all look for me before it's too late. They need him more than they imagine not just because he is part of the Abe no clan but because of his great ability.
Naru's P.O.V.
Its morning and I just woke up and saw lin still watching the monitors. I suspect that everyone are still asleep, that is why I decided to just go back to my room and take a bath. Minutes later or rather after taking a bath and had gone back to the base, everyone is in there already eating their breakfast.
"ah! Noll…have you already eaten your breakfast?" asked mother
"not yet…I'll be getting it now…"
"no need…everyone's food were already served by the maids minutes ago…yours are over there at the table" she said
"then I'll be eating now…also lin…did you already place a camera at her room?" I asked lin while going to the table to eat my breakfast.
"yes…actually okuda-kun get them here a while ago before you wake up…he said that 'mari told me that you will be needing to place a camera at her room to keep an eye on her' something like that…that is why I gave him a set of camera that he will be setting up"
"good.."
"also…I just receive the network of that camera and you can now see mai's room here…" said lin as he point unto one of the monitors while everyone including me just go and see what is currently happening into mai's room. And there I saw that mai is still asleep while okuda is beside her bed reading a book.
"look at her…she look like an angel sleeping like that" said ayako
"yeah…as if that nothing is going on in these house that keeps on harming her" agreed bou-san. I do agree too, since just by looking at mai's face its s if she isn't being target. That is why I decided to just go back to the table and finish my breakfast.
"oh! Mai-san's waking up…" said john
"but wait…it looks like she's having a nightmare…" said masako
"lin…volume up the speaker" I said and lin did it so. I walk towards the monito to see what is happening to mai
(happening in mai's room that is being shown on the monitor)
"AAAAHHHHHH!" shouted mai on the screen
"Mari? Mari…Mari…wake up! Mari..wake up! It just a nightmare…Mari!"
"AH! CHARLES! CHARLES! Huhuhuhu *sob*sob*sob*" cried mai
"shhh….its alright…I'm right here…I won't leave you…ssshhhh…." Comfort okuda
"he...he...*sob*sob*...where is akashi...i need him now...AH!" said mai then hold her stomach
"Mari! what's wrong? are you hurt somewhere?" asked okuda
"it hurts..."
"where?"
"h-here..." said mai as she remove the blanket and lift up a little of her upper cloths.
"this is!...mari...does it hurt too much?"
"yeah..."
"that doesn't surprise me...here hold this..."
"charles...what's wrong in my stomach...it hurts so much..."
"mari...wait here for a minute..." said okuda while kinda going to the camera.
"hey! oliver...i know all of you hears me now...i need a medic here...mari's wound is light but it won't stop bleeding..." said okuda then go back to mai's side
"charles...it hurts...aaahhh!"
"hmnn...AH! MARI! NO WAY!...OLIVER HURRY UP! SOMEWHAT A LOT OF WOUNDS ARE SHOWING UP AT THE STOMACH OF MARI AND ALL OF IT WERE BLEEDING! SO HURRY UP! MARI...MARI HOLD ON..." shouted okuda.
(on the base)
"ayako..come with me to the room of mai...you're a doctor that is why we need your skills in that field right now..." i said as i motion on going out of the room.
"ah! yes...of course...ah! can bou go with us... might need his help..." asked ayako
"i don't think so...if you need a hand you can just ask me or okuda..having so many people inside mai's room might danger her more"
"eh...then...ok...but i need to get my kit in our room"
"that's fine...we'll go there first for you to get it but we must hurry up now...mai needs our help now..."
"ah! of course...lets go" said ayako. after we had gone out of the base and go to the room of ayako and bou-san for her to get her medical kit. When ayako already had her kit we go straight to the room of mai to aid her fast. Okuda opened the door while ayako hurried to the bed wherein mai is currently lying.
"mai...don't worry...i'm here now...okuda-san...i need you and naru to hold her..." said ayako while me and okuda just did what she told us. I go to the left side of mai and hold out her hand while okuda is on her right side with ayako.
"mai...this might hurt a bit but it will be for disinfecting...ok?"
"hai..."answered mai
"ok..."said ayako as she started to disinfect mai's wounds that seems to me hurts so much because mai keep on struggling and shouting 'it hurts', it really seem painful. why does she even have this wounds and where did she got all of this?
"there...all done..."
"mari...are you alright?"asked okuda
"hmnn...yeah...i'm fine now...thank you ayako"
"no...not yet...here...drink this pill...its a pain reliever..."
"ok..." said mai as she drinks the pill that ayako gave to her
"she needs rest and she must took the pill whenever the wounds hurts..."she said to okuda
"ok...but how deep is her wounds? it just won't stop on bleeding a while ago..." asked okuda
"well...it wasn't that deep like the other wounds that needs to be stitch...as you have said a while ago...its just a light wound but it just keep on bleeding...about that...i don't really know why but its as if someone keep on pressing it that the blood keeps on flowing out..." said ayako
"what do you mean?" i asked
"well...mai...what do you feel right now?"
"he...he...is close to me now...he can hurt me like this now...means one thing...the next time is...i will be in his hands completely" said mai while crying, her tears keep on coming down her eyes.
"mari...no...i'll protect you with everything i got...he won't be able to get you..." said okuda
"i know..."
"mai...i promise akashi-kun that we will a close eye to keep you with us that is why...he won't be able to get you no matter what" i said.
"thank you everyone...that gave me courage..." said mai. After that me and ayako had gone back to the base. I saw everyone in a sad state, that is obvious since for sure they saw everything that happen in mai's room. Just thinking of what mai said a while ago makes me worry so much. I don't want to lose her for another time especially by some spirit in this house. If only i could do something for her...if only i could protect her more like okuda but the only thing that i could do right now is to keep on eye on her and wait for akashi to arrive.
