Chapter 14
(Remy's P.O.V.)
"That many?"
"Yep."
"Weren't you tired?"
"Cherie, if I ached that much every day I would gladly just stay in bed until he came home."
"You're a man whore. You know that, right?"
"Why, because I like bat dick?"
Selena scoffed at me as I cracked up laughing. Two nights had gone by since me and Batman's little escapade. After doing some bit of research she and I had finally settled down once again. Though tonight we were not going out on a heist. Rather, Selena had said she had some dire news to tell me.
"Did you and him ever get to have that talk of yours?"
"No. When he came over we got distracted. Had a tumble in bed, and then he said he had to go. I haven't seen him since." I answered her. Selena nodded sagely at what I said. No doubt she had gone through the same thing herself. She glanced out over the city deep in thought.
"You said you had something to tell me, Cherie?" I asked her gently. Selena frowned, her face deeply troubled as she considered my question.
"Something big is going down, Gambit. I had a source tell me the Justice League has taken an interest in Gotham City." Selena told me gravely. I stared at her for several seconds unable to believe this news.
"Are you sure? You have proof?"
"Don't you think it's a bit strange it's been awfully quiet in Gotham the past couple of days?" Selena whispered to me urgently. As if I had not taken notice of this particular fact. I did have to admit things had been quiet lately. One of the reasons why we had decided to hold off our activities for a while.
"I was hoping it was just my imagination, Cherie. Or at the very least Batman did such a good job mopping the streets the rest of us decent criminals caught the hint." I answered her. Selena huffed shaking her head as she gazed out over the city. Perched lightly on the railing with one leg hanging down idly.
"No, Remy, something big is going down. I can feel it in the very air. It scares me." She turned to fixate her piercing green eyes on me. I nodded my head as I came up beside her. She didn't need to say anymore to me. Despite our backgrounds I knew she was concerned about me being caught.
"You know you and I are way to close, right?" I whispered to her. Even though we were several stories up away from prying ears I to felt how oppressed the air was. I even began to scan the skies just in case I saw a hint of blue coming at us.
"You don't have to tell me twice." Selena huffed slipping an arm around my shoulders. I grinned when she planted a kiss on my cheek. Even if I was with Batman I could still appreciate a beautiful woman when presented with one.
"Did you want to part ways for a bit until it livens up a bit?"
"Hell, no. Who's going to watch my back if we do?"
"Well, if you don't mind swaying your hips just a little more…"
"Gambit, you're disgusting."
"I'm a man with needs, Cherie. What can I say?"
"You're with a bat!"
"Bats aren't rodents like swamp rats are, Cherie. And yes, I looked it up. Bats are not really rodents."
"Seriously? You had to look that up?"
"Yes, I did. Sad, non?"
"You're hopeless. I think you need to- GAMBIT!"
I heard the whistling just as Selena shoved me out of the way. I grabbed her just in time to throw her to the side when the concrete crashed into the railing. Dumbfounded we stared at the spot where we had been standing only moments before. Below us I heard distant screams in the street as the block went crashing down. Together Selena and I looked up in the direction where the block had come from and froze.
I had sworn to myself if given the choice I would never take him on. It seemed fate had a terrible sense of humor as above us floated the one person possibly in the world every criminal feared. Who could send you scurrying into the deepest, darkest hole just in the hopes he would not find you. The one person in the world who was probably going to end up bringing about world peace single handedly.
Above us Superman floated only a few yards right above our heads. He seemed just as surprised to see us as we were him. Selena and I had completely frozen in place our jaws open at the sight of the hero. Superman's brow furrowed as he glared down at us recognizing us for who we were. I doubted he knew who I was, but he might know who Catwoman was. Just as he was about to say something I saw another block arching into the air. Where the hell where they coming from?
"Superman, behind you!" I yelled pointing like a crazy person. Selena stared at me like I had lost my damn mind just as Superman turned around. With just one hand he caught the block before throwing it back like a baseball. I didn't see who he threw it at, but I did hear a muffled squeal of surprise.
"Gambit, come on!" Selena hissed into my ear. I was about to tell her off when I saw the rest of them converging on the spot where we were at. My heart plummeted as they began to appear.
Wonder Woman, Hawk Girl, the Green Lantern, and from time to time I spotted a flash of red announcing the presence of the Flash. My eyes focused on Superman one more time just as he was dealing with another cinder block being thrown at his head. I nodded to Selena and together we jumped off the edge of the building.
Beside me I heard her whip crack to stop her fall. I myself charged my staff and slammed it to the ground to absorb the shock of landing. Together she and I beat the scene. We were practically flying by how fast we fled through the back alleys. Behind us I could hear yells as civilians panicked.
Neither of us risked a glance backwards. Call us cowards if you want to, but there was no way in hell we would be able to take on the League all at once. Besides, Selena and I had no quarrel with them. Except for the part where we're criminals and their super heroes. Behind me I heard shouts as the heroes yelled to one another. By the time Selena and I stopped running I swore we had gone at least a couple of miles.
My chest ached as I leaned on my staff. Breathing hard to catch my breath as I was bent halfway over. Selena had a hand over her heaving chest as she leaned up against a filthy wall. She took her goggles and I saw her face was dripping with sweat. I tried to say something, but my lungs ached to much to say much of anything. I could only shake my head as I sat down heavily on some stairs in the alley we had come into. Hardly caring about the rats scurrying around my feet in the trash.
"Shit, I've never run so fast in my life. I'm so out of shape." Selena complained tiredly. I grinned at her, unable to help myself.
"We didn't run, Cherie, we flew. Don't feel to bad. We got pretty far for the most part." I pointed out closing my eyes. I struggled to catch my breath as I leaned against the wall. She was equally tired as well.
"Let's head home. If shit is going down I don't want to be caught in the middle of it. Or, if I am, at least they can't accuse me of doing anything." Selena huffed checking her whip. I nodded my head as I scanned the skies. We had managed to get farther then I had first thought we had. In the distance though I could still hear fighting, the sounds of gun blasts, and on the wind even an evil cackle.
"Alright, Cherie. Call me when you get to safety." I said to her.
We parted ways in the alleyway each taking a different route. Neither one of us was going to head straight home of course. First we would continue to go in the opposite direction, circle around, and then head way off course from our real destination before finally coming home. I knew Selena might be able to hide herself. I felt nervous though because Superman's eyes had locked with mine a split second before. I also kicked myself for having yelled out a warning to the hero. He was the man of steel! A cinder block being thrown at him would be nothing more than a leaf!
I rather felt then heard someone sneaking up behind me. I whirled just in time to bring up my staff. I felt a shock as Green Lantern's force slammed into me. Our eyes locked for only a split second before I charged my staff. Shoving back the green energy as I hissed at him unable to help myself.
Interesting fact: Green Lantern energy apparently does not work against pure kinetic energy.
Lantern's construct immediately faded off. He glared at me as I glared back at him. A quick check showed we were alone. I didn't see Superman or any other of the heroes coming to take me down. At the same time though the bastard had me trapped. He knew it too. The only way out was either to run straight past him or turn around to head towards the end of the alley. It was several yards away from freedom in either direction.
"I remember you." Lantern stated calmly. I said nothing, my eyes narrowing as I considered my options. He was frustrated by how his ring hardly worked against me. Anything he could throw at me could disappear.
"Good job against Sinestro last time, cher. You kicked his ass." I replied deciding to play it off. Maybe he hadn't seen me with Catwoman. I could only hope she was well out of sight when this man had shown up. Green Lantern frowned at me, but still he kept his distance.
"You get around a lot, don't you? So, let me take a guess…bad guy, right? You coming quietly or do I have to drag you kicking and screaming back to the police station?" Green Lantern demanded.
I'll admit, I was rather surprised the man had given me a choice. At the same time I sensed energy building up behind me. Whirling I withdrew two cards from my pocket. Throwing the first charged one at him before making a dash for it. I saw the green wall he had been building up to my escape. Fleeing in the opposite direction I threw my card. To my delight the wall vanished into thin air.
Behind me I heard cursing as I made my escape. Already drawing a third card to charge as I made my way down the street. Disappearing into another alleyway as I dodged around garbage bins. Leaping clear of piles of trash as I desperately tried to think of a way to shake this guy off. Sewers? Maybe. Killer Croc was on the loose though. And I already knew a few people had gone missing down there. Workers, mostly, but I didn't know which was worse. Killer Croc or the League capturing me only to find out what I truly was. Bad enough two of them had seen my face not counting Batman.
It was when I was dashing across the street I nearly got run over. Some idiot billionaire's limo nearly clipped me as it screeched to a halt. I just jumped over the hood of the car pausing only long enough to realize I had run into another line buildings. There was no way to squeeze in between them either. They were old apartment complexes, and stupid me had ended up right in front of them. Either I broke into the house and took a family hostage or kept on running.
"Hey! Cajun, get in!"
I froze at the sound of the voice. There was no way in hell he could be here right now. No way he and I could have crossed paths again after all this time. Yet when I turned my head I saw him. Dressed in a black suit with his long blond hair flowing down his shoulders. For a second I could do nothing but gape at him. In the dim light from the street lights he seemed to glow. Standing with the door to his limo open as he gazed at me intently with those deep amber eyes of his.
"You coming or what? Those guys are after you." Sabretooth snapped at me. He seemed annoyed at my hesitation. I raised my eyes and caught sight of Nightwing. Our eyes met as I began to approach Victor. I had no choice, really. Either keep running with my already aching legs or get a free ride.
Satisfied with my answer Victor got back into the limo. I reached out with one hand to touch hood of the limo. Just to make sure it was real. I knew word of this would get back to Batman. No doubt he would question my activities. What was I doing? Did I have relationship with Sabretooth?
Get Batman. I mouthed to Nightwing. He gave me a slight bow of his head before disappearing from sight. Taking a deep breath I shook myself off. Getting into the limo alongside Sabretooth.
Once the door shut behind me the limo began to move. It was rather spacious in the back. I looked around suddenly feeling out of place in such luxurious surroundings. Sabretooth sat at the far end of the limo drinking some type of wine. He gazed at me intently as I sat there. Exhausted, sweaty, smelling of garbage, and no doubt dirty from my run in the alleyways. When I turned to look at him he gave me a wicked grin. Showing off a mouthful of fangs I remembered only to well.
"Been a while since I last saw you, hasn't it?" Sabretooth asked me. I nodded my head still weary from my flight.
"Never thought you would be the one to live like this." I stated waving to our surroundings. Sabretooth looked around as if noticing it for the first time. He shrugged his shoulders as if he could care less.
"I had a few investments to draw on when the world went to shit. I've done well for myself since then. You can say I retired." Sabretooth explained swirling the wine in his glass. As if realizing he had company he took out another glass from a small compartment. I blinked, wondering how the world the wine had got into the new glass as he held it out for me.
"You can have some if you want. Where are you headed?" Sabretooth asked me.
I hesitated, really not wanting to draw closer to him. Unlike five years ago however Sabretooth seemed perfectly in control of his mental facilities. If anything he was completely relaxed in these posh surroundings. I sipped some of the wine to cover up my hesitation. Peering out the window as if considering the offer. I winced when I saw the Green Lantern fly over the rooftops. He did indeed glance in the direction of the limo, but he made no move to stop it. I felt my mouth go dry when I realized the car was not going very fast.
"We're going the speed limit. It would look suspicious if we were speeding away." Sabretooth told me simply. I winced, but nodded my head in understanding. He made a good point.
"At the moment I'm just trying to get away. After that I just planned on….heading somewhere to lay low." I answered carefully. Sabretooth nodded saying nothing about my brusque manner with him. I'll give the blond feral props for not being rude with me.
"If you've got nowhere to be want to come to my place? You can stay there until all this shit blows over. At this rate I doubt the League is going to be tracking down a thief when they have crazy people to deal with."
"Do you know who they were fighting?"
"To be honest, I have no damn clue. There's so many fucking super villains going around like rampant STDs I stopped trying to keep track of them. Probably some guy who thought he could take over by yelling his bloody head off. He'll find out he's in over his head soon enough."
I tried not to laugh at the annoyed tone Sabretooth had about the entire situation. He made a good point. We remained quiet after that for the rest of the car ride. I quietly drank my wine wishing I had eaten before I had gone out tonight. Usually I can hold my drink pretty well, but the wine must have been stronger then it tasted. When we got to his place Sabretooth handed me a pair of sunglasses to wear. He also had me change out of my clothes and dress in a spare black suit. Granted, the suit was a little tight on me since it used to belong to one of his bodyguards. After quickly combing back my hair into a neat ponytail I stepped out of the limo with him.
A doorman at the front of the huge building bowed as we entered through the revolving doors. Sabretooth, or Victor as he told me he preferred to go by now. People greeted him as he came in with smiles and bows. Despite the fact I was posing as his executive assistant I was still shocked by the change in him. When we stepped into the elevator there was a pretty girl in there who beamed at us. Asking politely which floor we wished to go on.
"My home please, my dear." Victor said to her.
"Right away, Mr. Creed." The girl said politely. She sounded like a twittering bird as she pressed a button on the console. The elevator immediately began to rise as I stood their stiffly. My hands clasped behind my back pretending I was James Bond. Well, I suppose I probably could be. Sneaking into enemy headquarters disguised as one of his most trusted men? I'm copyrighting that shit.
It only took a few minutes before she reached the condo. Victor thanked the woman as he stepped out into a short hallway. There were only a few doors as he took out a keycard. He swiped it and there was a soft click. Victor pushed the door open letting me enter after him before letting the door fall shut. When I saw what was inside I swear my jaw dropped for the second time that night.
"Yeah, it ain't what all the other billionaires have. I'm not like Bruce Wayne though. Why the hell he has that huge fucking mansion when he's the only person living there with one butler I'll never know. I mean, what does one person need with all that damn space?" Victor complained as he began to undo his tie. He tossed it onto the back of a chair followed soon by his suit. He also took off his shiny black shoes and tossed those into the corner as well.
"Maybe he's secretly gay. Makes sense if you think about it."
"I bet he has a secret S&M room he never tells anyone about. How much you want to bet there's a secret entrance too?" Victor asked me as he moved away towards a dining area.
I took off my glasses following Victor's lead. I jumped when I saw an actual stuffed tiger of his namesake with snarling teeth glaring at me. I studied it for a few seconds before taking off my own borrowed suit of clothes. I didn't ask what had happened to my other outfit. I had kept the few items I had on me close to me after handing over my dirty clothes. Logan's dog tags, Batman's batarang, my deck of cards, wallet, and of course my Bo staff which I collapsed to a more manageable size.
I had to give Victor props for having a nice place. It was wide and spacious. Just perfect for a person like him who liked a lot of space. Coming back in from the kitchen I saw Victor had poured himself another drink. I took off my shoes as well to place beside the feral's. They had begun to pinch my feet and were driving me insane. I also noticed somehow the feral had lost his shirt.
Sitting down on his black leather couch Victor seemed to have completely forgotten about me. He set his drink beside him on a table by his elbow. Picking up a newspaper he began to read it. From time to time licking his index finger delicately before turning a page. I tried not to watch him do this. It seemed oddly sexual for a man his size to do something so cat like. He had all the grace of Catwoman, but with a finesse I doubt even she could duplicate. Selena reminded me more of a liquid shadow rather than the brute force of a lion Victor had.
"How long have you been living here?" I asked him. Victor raised his amber eyes to lock me in his gaze for a split second. Then his eyes fell back down to the newspaper as he continued to read.
"About three years I think? I started the company up not to long ago back then. Traveled around a bit, and then after the League took over I decided to lay low. I still travel from time to time but only on business. What about you?" Victor asked me politely. I came around to sit down on the other side of the couch. When I did Victor held out his glass to me with a questioning look. I accepted it and took a drink.
"Good scotch."
"Thanks, it was a gift."
"Well, I looked for other mutants for a time. I never found anyone. I think…they're all dead. Except for you." I answered leaving out the part about finding a partner. Victor nodded in understanding as he took back the scotch. I blinked as the room felt it was moving beneath my feet. Damn, since when had I lost my resistance to alcohol so easily? The scotch hadn't even tasted that strong. If anything, it was actually a bit bitter.
"Sorry to hear that, Cajun. Maybe they're like you and went into hiding. I stopped looking after a while. I figured if they didn't want to be found it would be better that way. Dragging them out into the open would only put their lives in danger." Victor answered me. I opened my mouth to say something, but instead only a small sound came out.
I began to sense something was very wrong. I tried to get up but only made it a few steps before I fell over. My breathing hitched as blood began to pound in my ears. My felt my heart beat picking up as I tried to speak. All that came out were a few slurred sounds which made no sense. From the couch I saw Victor watching me coolly as I struggled to make a coherent noise.
"Hey, I got him. You can come out now." Victor said looking up from where I was. He made a signal with his hand and I heard a rustle as if curtains were being moved. I could only just barely move my eyes. The room around me had begun to spin. I felt scared I would throw up and choke on it.
A pair of black boots showed up in my field of vision. They were right by my head as I felt myself descend into a panic. I tried to move, but instead a knee appeared beside the boots. A second later a black gloved hand appeared above my head. Instead of suffocating me like I swear it was going to do I felt a hand gently cradling my head. Cushioning my skull as a face appeared above mine. Even while it was masked it was the last person in the world I had ever expected to see again. At first, I actually even thought I was gazing at Batman. Then with a shock I realized who it was.
"Rims, calm down. Breathe slowly, okay? We drugged you. You're going to be fine. No one is going to hurt you." Wolverine said quietly to me. His gruff voice sounded exactly the same the last time we had spoken. I opened my mouth feeling tears run down the side of my face. The white slits of Wolverine's mask narrowed. I felt his thumb graze my cheek as he wiped my tears away gently.
"I'm sorry I had to resort to this, Cajun. Your life is in danger though. The less you know the better. A lot of shit has been going on behind your back and you're in the center of it. Just trust me, alright? Now go to sleep. You'll feel sick when you wake up but you're in no danger of dying. I promise, I ain't going to let anyone lay a hand on you." Wolverine whispered to me.
As if on cue my mind began to shut down. As I closed my eyes as my mind began to go blank I distantly thought of how Logan smelled the same too. The same cigar like breath and slightly stained teeth. Dressed in his black ops outfit, a black version of his usual yellow and blue spandex uniform, I had to admit it was a vast improvement.
I didn't have a chance to form another thought before sank below the surface.
