Bingo prompt #12

Free Space

Whale, it seems i have come to a part to use the free space. I'm labeling this space as "Random angst". Tbh its not a trope or a cliche but whatever! (lets see who spots the chapter title and which other chapter title it connects with.) Enjoy~ *evil cackles in the distance*

The white noise of the city could never hope to pierce through Karkat's thoughts, no matter how loud it got. His eyes were trained on the pavement and on his shoes, taking one step after the other, a steady rhythm to contrast the rapid, anxious beat of his shattered heart.

He had done some really stupid shit before but he was nearly certain this topped the list. By some miracle of god, he managed to ruin three relationships in one day, hell, just in the past few hours; two of them his own and a third he really shouldn't have weaseled his way into in the first place. Then again, knowing Dave and John, they've already made up and were back on their usual shenanigans. His heart ached for that, he didn't know how they managed to be such good companions for one another. They probably hate you now. The words echoed in the back of his mind but he genuinely couldn't dispute it. There was no way to take back what he did, no matter how much he wished, begged or prayed for it.

A heavy sigh fell past his lips, unsure if it was from exasperation or just forgetting to breathe while so lost in thought. He had already cried more times than he could count today and he had a sneaking suspicion this wouldn't be the last time. It's never the last time. You cry and cry and that's all you're really good at.

Karkat paused in his tracks and clenched his fists, eyes squeezing shut as he choked back the fresh tears that threatened to spill again. He was glad to shut out the grayness anyways. Everything with him was grey, even the sky seems to have taken to the dull color. He clenched his teeth and set his jaw, sternly opening his eyes once more and letting the solid thud of his shoes hitting the pavement take over once more.

A few drops of water connected with the warm skin on the back of his neck, dripping down in small rivulets and soaking into his shirt. The grey pavement began to speckle with darker circles as raindrops sprinkled from the sky. His eyes trailed upwards once more, looking over the sky, consumed the slate grey of a brewing storm, shrouding out the bright blue that should be in it's place.

The sound of rain hitting the pavement steadily grew louder from the soft plops of little raindrops, hardly heard above the cars whizzing past to a downpour that drowned out even the sound of his heartbeat thrumming in his ears. Before he knew it, he was drenched and shivering and he finally lets go, hot tears falling over his cheeks while cold water hits and runs over his skin, the tears and rain mingling until he couldn't tell which was which. His dark black bangs were plastered to his forehead and he began to shiver much more violently. Even though it's summer, it doesn't always stop the rain from being cold, though Karkat had the sneaking suspicion he wasn't shaking from the cold so much as from his tears.

His feet slowly start to move again, slowly walking over to a small alleyway, breath coming out in a thin mist that dissipates within seconds. His fists clench and he turns his nose up to the grey sky, eyes squeezed shut to the downpour rushing over him and soaking him to the bone. His eyes felt hot and stung from the dryness of so many tears. The cold water washing over his face was almost refreshing but as he slid down the wall, the darkness began slowly overtaking him, the sun abandoning him behind the horizon.

Time slipped away, completely unnoticed, everything does: from the cars becoming scarce to the light fading from the sky. Briefly, Karkat thought about his family waiting for him at home but he wasn't ready to face that, not just yet. They could wait. Everything could wait. His eyes slowly close, focusing in on his breathing, taking it all one breath at a time.

Memories of mere hours ago fade back into his mind and hot tears once more mix with the cold rain. By the end of the day, canyons were bound to tear down his cheeks from the water constantly sliding down them. He didn't have the energy to sob, to cry, his eyes remaining closed as the tears slip from them and cascade down his cheeks and neck.

The one thing to break him from his trance was the barely recognizable click of something. Karkat's eyes slowly peel open but a gruff voice echoed through the alley before he could look up.

"Don't move, fucker." Karkat's heart once again began it's rapid beat in his chest, thrumming in his ears, nearly drowning everything else out. "Give me all you've got." Slowly, Karkat moves, hand reaching into his pocket. He hardly had anything on him but he wasn't going to test this guy. From the corner of his eye, Karkat could see the slight shake to the hand, causing the light from a nearby streetlight to gleam across the metal barrel of the gun. His mugger had on a hood that hid his face with dark shadow but he could still see the man's thin lips drawn into a nervous frown.

Time seemed to slow down, held at gunpoint as his hand pulls the wallet from his pocket and holds it up. Before the mugger can make a move for it, a loud voice rips through the silence.

"Get away from him, motherfucker!" The sudden voice made both men jump and a loud bang rang out through the alley. Time stood still and for a few split seconds of sheer shock and adrenaline, the pain doesn't register. The crunch of loose gravel on the pavement and the soft splash of two pairs of footsteps echo through the air as someone gives chase to the mugger.

Before Karkat recognized what was happening, before his brain had time to catch up to everything surrounding him, his cheek was in the cold, muddy puddle on the pavement.

5-name five things you can see.

His eyes struggled to focus, fading in and out. His eyes frantically looked around the dark and quiet alley. Grey pavement, muddy water, pale red tainting it, white mist from his mouth as he begins to hyperventilate, stars in his vision.

4-name four things you can feel.

As Karkat's mind begins to catch up, the pain begins ripping through his body, every slight shift, every twist roars through him. Warmth was spreading over his back and his chest, quickly turning cold from the rain which continued to relentlessly pour over him. Every panicked breath he took hurt more and more but he couldn't force himself to stop.

3-name three things you can hear.

Sirens wail in the distance, nearly drowned out by the pounding in his ears and in his head. Karkat could barely keep his eyes open but piercing through the coaxing pull of sleep were a set of footsteps returning. Karkat could recognize how choked his breathing was getting but the figure kneeled in front of his crumpled figure, a hand gingerly resting on his shoulder.

2-name two things you can smell.

The thick metallic scent of blood overpowers the fresh and cool scent of rain on the pavement. Karkat could taste it on his tongue and in the back of his throat now. But an all too familiar mixture of weed and cologne began to fill his nose instead and he desperately clawed and clung to consciousness, unsure if what he was seeing was truthful.

1-name something that makes you happy.

A voice tries to speak out but Karkat couldn't tell what they were saying. Were they shouting? The wail of sirens echo in the distance-or they're right there? Karkat couldn't know for sure since everything was oh so dull and it seemed like cotton was stuffed in his ears and in his mouth. Everything was fading and it was fading fast, despite how desperately he clung to the land of the waking. The voice sounded desperate, shaken and thick like a man facing the guillotine. Everything began to grow black and the last thing Karkat's eyes took in was dirty pavement covered in blood that was slowly being washed away by the rain that was unsympathetic to everything that had conspired. Darkness began to consume Karkat and finally, he gives in. He relents to the blissful, tempting pull of calm blackness that saved him from the chill which settled deep in his bones.

Name something that makes you happy

Quiet.
