Chapter 14
"I've totally heard a few people in my other classes talking about you two. Either you're selling it like a door-to-door salesman earning commission or you seriously are falling for Mr. Smythe, Kurt. I don't know how I feel about that."
The teacher smiled, rolling his eyes as he swiped his card at the gas station.
"And to be real with you, Mr. H, I'd rather you let me know if you are beginning to fall for him," Blaine said over the phone, making Kurt roll his eyes even more as he pumped gas into his car. "As a matter of fact, I'm going to need to give my approval of any guy you date going forward. You're not that great a judge of character…"
"Shut up, Blaine." Kurt was smiling when he said it and Blaine laughed, but Kurt seriously didn't want his student to feel that way. "You know good and damn well that I have no romantic attachment to Mr. Smythe, and I doubt you'll have to worry about me dating anyone for a while. After this is over, I'm focusing on any and everything else but dating."
Kurt heard Blaine's hum of approval of what he said in his earpiece and smiled. "But you're very hot, Mr. Hummel. You have to remember that. You'll have a hard time staying single in New York. Tons of successful, hot gay guys giving you the eye."
"You sound so corny."
Blaine laughed.
"But back to what we're actually supposed to be talking about…" The man stretched as he watched the meter. "You say your classmates are talking about Smythe and me, and I know that the faculty is—they can barely shut up about it."
"Not a lot of interesting things happen in McKinley, Mr. H."
"I guess not." Kurt returned the pump to its place and accepted his receipt from the machine. "All that matters is it won't take long for word to reach Principal White's ears and then things should be perfect."
Kurt could tell the student was moving around on the other end of the phone. He was probably getting ready to go to his older brother's house. "Yeah."
Kurt got into his car and started it up, fixing the headset as he continued the conversation. The week had been going well as far as their agenda went. Everything was going smoothly. On Monday, Blaine told Sebastian that he was going to let the man have sex with him to keep quiet, and eventually Sebastian agreed with him that they'd go through with it for over the weekend. On the other front, Kurt was keeping up appearances, and he was such a great actor that he trained himself not to puke whenever the man kissed him. People were believing that they were together, and that was the point of this all. The hardest part probably was having to stay away from Blaine but he and the boy were working it out. "I have to find a way to get your name to come up in conversation without it being too obvious."
"Conversation with whom?" Blaine asked.
"With the other teachers and even Mr. Smythe. It would be great for them to think that you know— that the two of us are still working together and everything is fine, just like it's been since I've gotten here. I may try something tomorrow in the Teacher's Lounge."
Blaine said ok. "Cool. Maybe you can write me a letter of recommendation as well? It'd mean a lot. I just filled out an application to Columbus State Community College and I want them to know that while most of my grades have been shit, I am changing my tune. Also that I am going to be serious."
Kurt pulled onto the road and began to drive towards his home. "And you are serious, right?"
"Incredibly."
"I'm glad to hear it."
On the other side of town, Blaine neglected to ride his motorcycle to his older brother's place, opting to walk instead. It was a beautiful day. He crossed over to the other side of the street and spoke. "I have to admit I am really nervous about this thing with Smythe. No matter how great it's going. … I'm kind of afraid that I might end up hitting him before this whole operation is over."
"And if you do that," Kurt began. "Our whole plan will definitely blow up in our faces. Don't worry about it, ok? He'll get his. I'll see to it."
Blaine nodded. A calm, comfortable silence fell between the two of them and as the teen thought about how much things were going to change soon, he voiced his thoughts. "When will you be leaving for New York anyway?"
Kurt smiled sadly as he drove. "You miss me already huh?"
"More than you understand."
"I miss you too." Kurt stopped at a red light, resuming with the conversation before an entirely new one could start. They were doing ok. No need to get sidetracked and mess up the plan. "I have an audition next weekend so I'll be heading there early on Saturday, probably have dinner with Rachel, and then I'll be back the next day. But as for when I actually pack my glad rags and make the big move, that won't happen until Mrs. Frances is back."
Blaine sighed; phone against his face as he turned the corner. "My days with you are numbered. That stinks."
Kurt was quiet.
"Selfishness aside though, I'm both proud of you and happy for you Mr. H."
"And the same goes for you with your college application, Mr. A."
Blaine smiled. "Thank you. Didn't get in yet, though."
"You will." Kurt pulled off. He had one hand on the steering wheel as he began, turning onto Main Street. "We're going to do something before I go, for sure. I promise."
"Alright." Blaine nodded to a guy from the football team as they passed each other on the sidewalk. "It can't be a Friday though. Friday evenings are reserved as date nights for this guy I'm talking to."
"Is it the guy you went to see yesterday?"
Blaine smiled. "Yeah, Andrew. He's good company."
Kurt hummed. "And his name isn't Brandon?"
Blaine laughed, shaking his head. "I swear this one is real. He's no 'you' Kurt, but he actually exists. Give me some credit."
Kurt laughed too, ignoring how much he disliked the idea of Blaine being with another guy even though that's what Kurt wanted him to do. Well, it wasn't so much a want as it was a need. It was necessary for Blaine to move on, and have a healthy relationship. He deserved that much. "That sounds good. If he is a real person, I am incredibly happy for you."
Blaine smiled, stopping as he stepped onto his brother's block. "He's real, but I don't believe that incredible happy nonsense you just spewed."
"Why not?"
"Well, if you are that happy then it means you didn't really care. You should be a tad bit upset. I know if you were with someone you actually liked instead of Smythe, I'd hate it. Hell, I hate that you're with Smythe and it isn't even real."
Kurt pulled into his parking space and took a deep breath. "I just want you to have a chance to be incredibly happy. I'll put it that way."
Blaine looked around the quiet Lima neighborhood. "Listen, I'm going to let you get back to your afternoon. I'm about to go hang out with Cooper and Lily. I'll see you in class tomorrow."
Kurt nodded. "I'll see you then."
"Oh, and I'll be late to tutoring because of this meeting I have with my guidance counselor. Maybe 10 minutes or so. It should be short."
"Great," Kurt said, grabbing his things to exit the car. "That works perfectly. It'll give me an excuse to go into the guidance counselor. I'll start working on your letter of recommendation in there and sell this plan some more to the faculty."
Blaine smiled, pulling out his key. "You're brilliant, you know that?"
Kurt closed the car door with his hip and locked it with his key remote. He smiled at Blaine's last words and shook his head. "Hug Lily nice and tight for me."
"Will do. Later, Mr. H."
"See you tomorrow, Blaine."
…
As of late, there was nothing Blaine hated more than Mr. Smythe's class. It was terrible because Blaine loved to play music, and he got to learn a lot as he played piano there. But Smythe himself was so disgusting and the teen could not stand the sight of him or the sound of his voice.
Luckily, it was now near the end of the class—only a few minutes from the bell ringing. Mr. Smythe said something that Blaine hadn't been listening to but he did see the man wink at him and smirk before returning his focus to the rest of the class. Blaine balled up his fist but looked away.
Mr. Hummel said he would handle it but Blaine wanted in on the fun as well.
When the bell rang, Blaine was the first one out of the room. Sebastian wasn't surprised by that. He knew that his student hated his guts, and he had no doubt it had everything to do with Kurt, and maybe a little bit to do with what he was asking of him so that he'd keep quiet. But since Blaine cared about Mr. Hummel so much, he was willing to sleep with Sebastian just so the man would keep their little love affair quiet. No matter how much Blaine denied it, his music teacher wasn't stupid. He knew there was something going on. Even with that, he did want to make the experience as enjoyable for Blaine as it'd be for him, so they'd definitely take their time this weekend. He had it all planned out.
In the hallway, Blaine stopped when he felt a hand reach out to grab him. He turned around, pulling his earphones out and smiling at one of the twins. "Anastasia. What's up?"
The blue eyed girl reached for his phone and turned off his music. "I just saw Principal White so you don't what to get caught listening to music during school, dummy."
He rolled his eyes. "Is that all?"
"Nope." She stepped aside so a few freshman could rush to their next class. "I'm going to need that letter of recommendation over the next couple days. My uncle is waiting on the application so that he can push you through. Technically he isn't in admission but Amelia and I put in a good word so…"
"And I love you both for it." Blaine put one earbud back in. "I asked Mr. H. to write one and he's going to have it done really soon. Thanks again. Soon, ok?"
Anastasia smiled. "Ok Blaine."
"See you fifth period." He waved and jogged through the halls, trying to make it on time for math.
…
Kurt's day had went by rather slowly. He didn't know why it was moving at such a snail's pace, but thank goodness it was Thursday and there was only one more day before relaxation.
Well, not exactly. There wasn't much time to relax when you were involved in a scandal as illegal as Kurt was, but he still couldn't wait for a day off from McKinley.
His fifth period class ended and Blaine walked up to his desk after saying goodbye to Nick. He smiled at his teacher as Kurt packed up a few things. "Meet back here after my meeting with the guidance counselor?"
Kurt smiled back. "Sounds like a plan to me. I'll stop in at the Teachers' Lounge and get you a coffee this time."
Blaine smiled. "How sweet of you."
"Time is of the essence, Blaine."
They went their separate ways and Kurt jogged quickly down the hall to the lounge. Someone was coming out and said hello to him as he entered. Sebastian was already there, warming up his lunch for the day, and he smiled when he saw his 'boyfriend'.
"Hello Mr. Hummel. You look amazing today."
Kurt smiled at him before 'playfully' rolling his eyes away, placing his things on the table. "Hello everyone."
"I think I forgot you worked here," Madame Michele told him. "You barely come into the lowly teachers' lounge anymore. Blaine's in here more than you are. Welcome back!"
Kurt laughed as he took a seat. "I know I've been missing in action but, speaking of Blaine, he went to see his guidance counselor so I had some free time."
Sebastian smiled and walked over, taking the seat directly next to him. Kurt ignored the feeling of disgust in his throat and slid a little closer to him. "I would rather talk about your day outside of Blaine Anderson."
"Well, so far so good." Kurt said, grabbing a pen and paper from his bag. "It's actually a little better now that I'm with you."
The chemistry teacher Mr. Johnson rolled his eyes, making the other faculty laugh. "You two are really sickening."
Kurt laughed as he began to write.
"What're you doing?" Sebastian questioned. The music teacher glanced over at Kurt's writing as he dug into his food.
"I'm starting a draft of Blaine's letter of recommendation. I said he should ask you since he wants to study music but he seems to think that you really hate him." Kurt stopped and looked at his make-believe boyfriend. "And while I know that isn't true, he seriously believes it. I decided to help out anyway."
Madame Michele made a face. "Why would he think that?"
"I don't hate him. He's just constantly disrespectful in my class. I guess he's been calming down a bit but his overall attitude… you guys know."
The teachers shrugged. The gym teacher focused on eating. Blaine finished all of his gym credits in junior year so there was no need for him to be in on this discussion.
"He's made a great turnaround if you ask me." Mr. Johnson said.
"Me too," added the French teacher.
Kurt nodded. "And when he and I began, we had our issues, but now he's serious about college and has been focused on doing what he needs to. I'm really proud."
Sebastian glared at Kurt for a moment. He must've really thought he was stupid. There was something going on. "He's got all of you fooled. There's no way in hell a school is accepting him, I don't care if you attached wads of cash to that acceptance letter. Besides, a kid like that can't completely turn around in a matter of weeks. I'm pretty sure he's still a piece of shit."
The room went quiet.
Kurt tried his hardest not to smile. Well that was after he imagined beating the shit out of the man sitting next to him for saying the things about Blaine he'd said. But seriously, Sebastian's dislike for Blaine just allowed Kurt to hit the jackpot. Now, there were a few witnesses that knew how Sebastian really felt about the student. It sounded a lot like hate instead of a mild dislike for him because the bad boy tended not to listen. Mr. Smythe said just what Kurt needed him to.
When the History sub went back to writing and the room remained quiet, Sebastian tried starting up another conversation—one that wasn't centered around any of the children. Kurt checked his watch and stood up.
"I better get back to my classroom. We're going to get a quick French lesson in. Call me tonight?"
Mr. Smythe ended up looking over Kurt's body possessively before he nodded. "Yeah, I will. Later, gorgeous."
Kurt smiled, pouring a cup of coffee for his student and then leaving. "Later."
…
Blaine returned to his History classroom and knocked lightly on the door, opening it when he heard Mr. Hummel instruct him to go inside. He closed the door behind himself but didn't lock it—those days were over—and as he approached his teacher who sat behind his desk, Blaine smiled proudly and dragged a chair over to him. "Looks like I can graduate on time if I pass everything. No summer school for me!"
Kurt clapped and gave him a cheer. "I told you that you could do it. And I'm always right."
Blaine rolled his eyes and took a seat, smiling at the coffee his teacher handed him. "Thank you. Sorry I was a bit late but Jeff saw me in the hall and wouldn't stop running his mouth."
"Don't worry about it." Kurt put some of the papers he was grading to the side. "So is there anything that you need help with? I know you're doing ok with your French…"
Blaine put his phone on the desk and took out his notebook. "We have an exam tomorrow so I'm just going to go over my notes. You can do what you need to."
Kurt smiled. "Good. By the way, Mr. Smythe put his foot in his mouth in the teachers' lounge in front of our fellow staff so that worked out perfectly. He may be more jealous of you than you are of him."
Blaine smirked, flipping through pages. "He needs to be. I could take you from him if I seriously wanted to." He winked and reached over to touch his teacher's hand, laughing when Kurt slapped it.
"Behave yourself." The man was blushing but licked his lips and went back to what he was doing.
Blaine sighed. "Fine." He smiled at Kurt and then looked back down, mumbling French to himself. On the teacher's desk, Blaine's phone vibrated, causing the screen to light up. Kurt looked at it and realized it was a text from someone, but what really caught his eye was the lock screen Blaine had as his wallpaper. He picked up the phone before his student could reach for it and stared. That must've been Andrew.
"Oh, that's Andrew."
Kurt continued to look at it. "You have a text from your brother." He passed the phone over and Blaine accepted it, reading the message. "And you and Andrew look good together. I'm happy he's real."
Blaine smiled at that. "Thank you." The picture of the two of them was pretty PG—just Blaine with his tattooed arm around the brown haired boy as Andrew smiled, but they did look nice together. "We're just getting to know one another now but, I really think I'll ask him to be my boyfriend soon."
Kurt watched his student as he replied to the text message. "That's great."
Blaine nodded, placing the phone back down and returning to his work. Kurt looked at the device and then sat back, hating the envy he felt towards this boy he didn't even know. It was really pathetic.
"So have you two kissed yet?"
The sound of nonchalance in the History substitute's voice made Blaine look up with a smirk. He knew that Mr. Hummel was full of it right now, and the way that the man refused to look at him as he pretended to rifle through papers said it all. "If you weren't in a happy relationship with Mr. Smythe, I'd totally think you had the hots for me."
Kurt smirked at that, giving Blaine his attention now. "I guess I don't want to think about someone else getting to have you in that way even though—"
"Even though you're the one who told me to move on and find someone my own age."
Kurt nodded, looking away. "That's exactly what I was going to say. That doesn't mean I stopped having feelings for you."
Blaine closed his notebook. It was evident he wasn't going to get any studying done right now. "We haven't kissed. Yet."
Kurt didn't answer.
"And just because I'm trying to move on with this guy who I think is totally sweet doesn't mean that I've stopped having feelings for you either. But then again I'm pretty sure you know how I feel for you Kurt and that won't change."
Kurt nodded. "Same."
Blaine took a deep breath and looked around the empty classroom. "Maybe we can talk about this some more later on. It's much too risky here."
"You're right," his teacher said, eager for the conversation to end. "I just know he better treat you right."
Blaine smiled at him. I love you too, idiot.
…
The next day, Kurt and Sebastian were each approached by Principal White before the school day had even begun. The man told them that he knew what was going on because not only had the staff been whispering things, but students were saying things too. He stressed the importance of there being no PDA during school hours, and Kurt wondered if it was more because of them being two men or because it was strictly due to professionalism. Not that it mattered anyway, because these rules were like heaven to the substitute. Now he could stop touching and pretending to like touching Sebastian Smythe. Everyone knew. This was exactly what he needed.
After Sebastian left to get ready for Band class, the other two men continued to talk. Mr. White further suggested to Kurt once the two of them were alone that since he wasn't a permanent teacher, he may want to think this over. If anything were to happen between them, it could affect whether or not Mr. Hummel wanted to stay at McKinley, and being that the principal really wanted him to stay, he was pretty much against the relationship to begin with. Kurt knew he was leaving anyway, whether or not they did, but this brought about a perfect set up. He said that he'd think about it and he'd even talk to Mr. Smythe about it, because initially he didn't want a relationship in the workplace but decided to give them a shot.
"I hope Mr. Smythe didn't pressure you into being with him?"
"Oh, definitely not," Kurt told him as he sat in the man's office. "Actually, one of our students so how hard he'd been trying for weeks—Blaine—and suggested that I should give him a chance. I do think he's a nice guy and if the situation was different, I would've dated him much sooner," he said. "But I just feel weird about the teachers and even the students knowing and about Mr. Smythe showing me off… if it doesn't work out, we'll both look really unprofessional. Well, just stupid."
Principal White nodded. "Then why would you consent to a relationship with him?"
Kurt shrugged; his acting pretty freaking fantastic if he had to say so himself. "He's a great guy, and some of the other teachers said that I should at least give him a shot. We do have a good time together when we hang out as friends, I'll admit that. And I do think it has potential, as long as we're careful at work, why not?"
The man looked at him, nodding slightly.
"He's been trying to get with me for a long time and I gave in," Kurt said with a smile. "I hope I don't regret it. But I think he and I will have to discuss things and maybe we can agree to go back to being just friends if it does come to that."
"Even though he seems to be really into you?" The man shook his head. "I don't know, Mr. Hummel."
"I think he'd want to do what's best for himself as a professional."
"We'll see."
Kurt looked at the clock on the wall. This surprise meeting went great. Now, when he decided to call things off and Sebastian tried to out Blaine and Kurt, it would seem he was a disgruntled rejected ex-boyfriend. "Thanks for the talk, Mr. White. I'm going to go set up for my first period class. I hope I can come back and chat with you again? If I ever have any concerns, I mean."
The heavyset man stood up and nodded emphatically. "Of course. I have the best interests of you and the students here in mind."
Kurt nodded to him and said thanks again before leaving the room with a smile on his face.
…
So it's Friday. That's date night, right? Where are you taking Mr. Andrew? –K.H.
Blaine said goodbye to Nick and Jeff as the two left his place. He combed a hand through his hair, reading the message. All day long he'd been thinking about this; about his teacher and how much he missed him, and how things had pretty much gone south. He thought about how Andrew would probably be a good guy for him to have around, and maybe they'd stay together for a while, who knew. But there was one thing Blaine was sure about and that was who he wanted to be his first… who he wanted to give himself to before he had to settle for dating other guys.
That was definitely Kurt Hummel.
We're going to this carnival type of gig with Nick and Jeff and some of his Warbler buddies. –Blaine
Sounds like a lot of fun. I hope you have a blast. –K.H.
Blaine got up to his room and sat on the bed, thinking hard before typing out his response. He didn't know how Kurt would take this, and he saw rejection in the near future. But he had to try anyway.
I was thinking about spending the weekend with you if you aren't too busy. I know that Sebastian is expecting me tomorrow so you have Saturday free, but what about Sunday. Can I have your Sunday too? –Blaine
As expected, it took more than 10 minutes for a response. Blaine pretty much knew all of the thoughts that would run through his teachers head. First would be the 'no way is this a good idea' and then 'we can't because we're doing this plan and it's going well' and then 'but I really miss him' followed by 'if you stand up Smythe and he finds out it's because you're with me, we're toast'. But he knew his teacher would be eager to hear more. When he finally got a response, it said just that.
What would you like to do? We can't exactly go out and we can't exactly visit one another's house… -K.H.
Blaine flexed his hand after taking off the wrapping once and for all. It had healed nicely. He typed a reply and waited for Kurt to either deny him or grant him his wish.
We can go somewhere. Maybe drive to Columbus. I'll get a hotel. We deserve a break, don't you think? –Blaine
Definitely, but the thing is would this be a smart choice to make? –K.H.
We'll be fine. I just… I've been thinking, and I want you to be my first. Even if we can't be together, the fact of the matter is I choose you. –Blaine
And after we spend this weekend together, everything will go back to normal. I won't bother you. We can resume the plan. I'll go have as happy a life as I can with Andrew. You have my word. –Blaine
Would we be driving there separately? –K.H.
Blaine smiled.
Yes. I think that would be for the best. –Blaine
I want to be your first, Blaine. –K.H.
God, if anyone ever sees these messages. –K.H.
I won't let anything happen to us. Don't worry. –Blaine
There wasn't a response for a while. Blaine got up to get dressed for the outing with his friends. By the time he zipped up his sweater, a reply finally came through.
Book the reservation. –K.H.
…
Kurt couldn't believe he was doing this, but he knew he wanted this more than anything he'd ever wanted. Blaine was so important to him and though they'd been through so much together, the ups and definitely the downs, he wanted this to be a memory he took to New York with him. He wanted Blaine to have this memory as well. They would be away from each other for a while and probably wouldn't be as close as they wanted to after that, but he knew that he could make this experience beautiful for Blaine.
Besides that, Kurt really, really wanted to make love to him.
On the drive to Columbus, the man got a few texts from Sebastian. He was claiming that he wouldn't be able to do anything today because something came up with his mom, and while Kurt knew the real reason was because Sebastian made plans with Blaine, he smiled and called him back, explaining it was ok. Little did the music teacher know, Blaine wouldn't be showing up and he wasn't going to have as good a time this weekend as he'd planned.
The drive was two hours. Blaine was already at the hotel when he got there, and they smiled nervously at one another as Blaine led the way to the room he reserved. They dropped their things down and Kurt watched the 18 year old blush as he looked at the bed they'd spend the night on.
"I was thinking we could go grab a bite to eat, and then I wanted to look around campus at the college. I know it won't be extravagant but, I just wanted a glimpse."
Kurt nodded at him with a smile. "We can go to the Aquarium too. It'll be like a real date we never got to have."
Blaine smiled at that. "Yeah."
"Speaking of dates." The two of them left the hotel room and slowly walked side by side back to the elevator. "How was the carnival last night?"
Blaine shrugged. "It was fun but I couldn't stop thinking about you. He did give me a cheek kiss goodnight."
Kurt smiled. I'm going to give you so much more. "That's sweet."
…
They spent the day out and about doing things they could never do while they were together back in Lima. There wasn't a fear of getting caught around here. At one point, Blaine reached for his hand and Kurt smiled, fighting against the voice in his head that told him to pull away. He didn't have to. Not today.
They toured the campus of the college and then went for a walk through the park, and ended up kissing in front of the butterfly fish in the aquarium. It was soft and sweet, and Blaine was much gentler than he used to be—at first he'd be so eager but now, he took his time and made Kurt weak in the knees.
This was mainly a bad idea because Kurt was falling all over again in the span of a few hours. After this weekend, he would have to walk away from Blaine and go to a whole new state, pretending that he didn't feel the things he did or do the things that made him happy. He'd have to know that Blaine was back in Ohio with Andrew or whomever, and that he was miles away missing out. But on top of all of that, he couldn't deny that he wanted to experience all of this.
They got back to the hotel room around 7. Blaine was already blushing at the thought of what the night would entail as he stepped out of his shoes and smiled at his teacher. "I'm supposed to be meeting up with Mr. Smythe right now in some sleazy motel room back in Lima."
Kurt rolled his eyes at that. "Can we not talk about him at all?"
"Deal," Blaine said quickly. "I…" He blushed. "I'm going to get in the shower. You can order room service if you'd like."
Kurt watched him for a while before smiling; the older man licking his lips. "Can't I join you?"
He tried not to laugh as Blaine showed just how much of a virgin he was, gulping hard. "Y-Yeah, I mean you c-can if you want. I don't m-mind at all."
"Good," Kurt answered plainly, staring Blaine in the eyes.
"Good." Blaine nodded.
