The next day Jade felt completely on edge at school. Every move she made she was convinced someone could tell she was pregnant. Already two of her teachers had kept her back after class to talk to her about it and it felt like more and more people knew. At lunch after she paid for her burrito from Festus' truck she swore she overheard her name, Beck's name and someone else whispering about babies. Self consciously Jade pulled the sweater she was wearing further down before sitting down at the table with her friends.
'You know some maternity clothes are designed to hide the baby bump' Tori mentioned, after seeing Jades uneasy look.
'Oh my god, Tori would you just shut up about it!' Jade hissed irritated, looking around to make sure no one had overheard.
'I'm just trying to help' Tori said defensively.
'Well you're not!' Jade shouted, wishing Tori would just leave her alone.
'Ok, I'm sorry' Tori put her hands up, deciding it was best to just leave her be whilst she was in this foul mood. Jade shook her head stabbing at her lunch with her fork.
'Hey Jade, save some for the rest of us' Ryder Daniels walked over to the gangs table, smirking, obviously just wanting a rise out of her. Jade clenched her fist around her fork, desperately trying to ignore his snide comment. She looked down at her swollen abdomen, wondering if she actually looked as huge as she felt.
'Are you sure you want to eat all that babe? You're kinda filling out' Ryder said in a faux worried voice and Jade slammed her fork down and spun around.
'Why don't you go smash your head in a car door!' She shouted her eyes glistening with anger. Cat gasped putting her fingers in her ears whilst Robbie and Andre just glared in the direction of the older guy, thinking he deserved whatever he got from Jade at this point
'I'm just being honest.. you're kind of letting yourself go without Beck here' Ryder shrugged and Jades mouth dropped open gasping slightly.
'What is wrong with you?' Andre snapped, standing up having heard enough of the older guys taunts. Ryder just grinned, walking off, happy with the reaction he got. Andre sat back down but the atmosphere at the table was tense and for the first time in her life Tori wished Cat would start telling a crazy story about her brother to lighten the mood. After a long silence Jade pushed her plate forwards frowning.
'Jade. Come on, don't listen to that moron' Andre said, placing a comforting hand on the pale girls arm.
'I'm not' Jade pushed him off bluntly.
'Finish your lunch then' he said sensitively.
'I'm not hungry' Jade mumbled, standing up from her seat at the table and swinging her school bag over her shoulder.
'Ow shit!' Jade groaned, dropping her bag and rubbing her shoulder in pain. Andre bent down to pick up her bag as Tori jumped up to make sure she was alright.
'Are you ok? Tori approached the pale girl worried
'I'm fine' Jade grimaced.
'This is really heavy Jade.. seriously, let me take your theatre history book' Andre added in concern but Jade snatched the bag back off him before he could take it.
'Are you sure you're okay?' Tori ensured.
'I'm fine! Just give me space, you're suffocating me!' The pale girl shouted exasperatedly. Tori and Andre watched alarmed as she threw her bag over her other shoulder and stormed away.
The bell rang prompting the end of school rush in the corridors. Tori and Cat walked happily out of their costume design class in the direction of their lockers. Cat was carrying a dress that she'd spent weeks designing and she was delighted because she only had to add the final touches to it tonight and it would be complete.
'It really is gorgeous Cat, you're so talented!' Tori complemented Cat who giggled and jumped happily.
'Hehee, I'll design your wedding dress for yours and Andre's wedding day if you want!' Cat squealed hopefully.
'Yeah sure' Tori agreed, smiling nervously. She didn't attempt to explain to Cat that since her and Andre had only been dating for a month, marriage was the last thing on her mind. But it was amazing how quickly they'd both settled into the relationship. She figured it was because they were already so close that not much had changed. To some extent though, it did make her a little nervous. This wasn't like any of her past relationships which had been fast paced and over before she even had time to get used to it. But was nonchalance really what she was supposed to be feeling?
'Uh oh.. Jadey' Cat squeaked, hiding behind Tori. Tori looked around and saw Jade approaching.
'Whats up? Why are you hiding from Jade?' Tori questioned the little red head curiously.
'Because she's scary!' Cat exclaimed as though it was something she'd only just realised, 'She said she's going to stab Mr. Purple with her scissors and then threatened to squish me!'
'I'm sure she didn't mean it' Tori assured her.
'Yeah well I ain't taking any chances!' Cat hugged the stuffed giraffe tightly to her chest and ran in the opposite direction as the pale girl approached.
'Where's she running off to? Oh wait I don't care' Jade frowned watching the red head run off.
'She said you threatened her' Tori said frustratedly. She was trying to be patient with her because she knew her pregnancy hormones were probably out of whack and were part of the reason she was behaving so badly recently. But Cat was so innocent, she didn't deserve to be treated that way.
'She probably deserved it' Jade crossed her arms.
'You aren't being very nice to people' Tori sighed pulling some books out of her locker and putting them in her bag.
'People are annoying' Jade shrugged, but the movement was accompanied by a wince and Tori noticed it.
'Whats wrong with your shoulder?' Tori frowned.
'It's nothing' Jade replied defensively.
'Do you have that antenatal appointment now?'
'Shhh! Don't say it out loud' Jade shushed her, looking around anxiously.
'Well can I come?' Tori asked. She had been worried about Jade's health for a while now and now this stuff with her shoulder was the final straw. She needed to see for herself that Jade and the baby were ok because she knew if something actually was wrong, it was extremely unlikely Jade would admit it.
'I'm not six years old and you're not my babysitter' Jade snapped irate.
'No a six year old would be a lot less work!' Tori glared back at the pale girl.
'I can go on my own!'
'Well I haven't got a ride home, everyones left.. If you don't take me then I'll have to walk' Tori pleaded
'Good you could use the exercise!' Jade turned walking away.
'It's ten miles!' Tori exclaimed following her. Jade quickened her pace exiting the building and making her way out to the car park. Tori realised Jade was never going to willingly let her come so she knew she'd have to try another tactic and began to run in the direction of Jades car.
'What? Are you actually serious right now? Outrunning me!' Jade shouted as Tori reached the car and climbed inside the passenger seat. When Jade caught up with her she climbed in the drivers seat and glared angrily at her. Tori folded her arms and faced the front, remaining firm on this one. Jade eventually huffed and started the car beginning the half hour drive to her doctors surgery.
'You're stressed' Dr Rose said after she'd finished the examination. Jade looked anxiously up at the doctor and Tori put down the book she'd been reading and frowned.
'Your blood pressure is too high. It's not so high that we need to be worried, but just take it easy for a while' Dr Rose reassured her before changing the subject 'Everything else is fine, you're baby is growing nicely and you're a healthy weight and size for 26 weeks.'
'Am I done?' Jade asked bluntly.
'Yes, you're done, unless you have any other issues we need to discuss?' Dr Rose asked and the pale girl shook her head
'Jade..' Tori intervened 'Tell her about what happened today at lunch.' Jade rolled her eyes, she didn't see why Tori was making such a big deal over it.
'My back and shoulder have been aching thats all' Jade downplayed.
'Ok, well some aching is normal considering the amount of growing she's been doing recently. But mind if you just slip the side of your dress down so I can take a look at your shoulder just in case?'
Although Jade wanted to leave she obliged, hoping Dr. Rose would be able to give her something for the constant aching she was suffering. As soon as Jade lifted her dress down Tori's eyes widened. Her shoulder was completely swollen and bruised and Tori wondered why she hadn't said something sooner.
Dr. Rose asked her all the usual suspect questions. Did someone do this to her? Did she fall? But Jade shook her head at everything. She went on to examine the brunettes shoulder, asking her to move it and applying pressure to it which caused the pale girl to seethe in pain.
'It looks nasty but it's just a bad sprain' Dr Rose concluded, typing out a prescription for some safe pain killers. 'At this stage in your pregnancy your ligaments and joints are much looser so it's likely you just lifted something wrong. But really you shouldn't be carrying anything heavier than 10lbs at the moment and until your shoulder heals, I recommend you avoid carrying anything of substance at all.'
'What?' Jade cried exasperatedly.
'It should heal in as little as a two weeks if you rest it, but if you continue carrying heavy objects you'll only make it worse and that's certainly not going to help you when you have a new-born to lift' Dr. Rose said seriously.
'Fine' Jade said simply, slipping her dress back up and pulling on her sweater. Dr. Rose handed her the prescription and Jade bent to lift her bag.
'Ah!' Tori scolded, swooping in and picking up the bag for her. Jade rolled her eyes and walked out of the doctors surgery. She couldn't face an argument right now, she just wanted to get back to Tori's and curl up in bed.
The drive home was silent as most of their car rides where these days. Tori could tell Jade was in pain from the look on her face each time she had to pull the break and the first thing the pale girl did when they got back to the house was down the pain killers. Tori was desperate to say something but the pregnant girl was obviously not in a talkative mood and went straight upstairs to her room before she had the chance to talk.
Jade never came down to dinner that evening, but Tori just let her be. She went to the store later that evening and whilst she was there she phoned Andre and told him about everything that happened with Jade and her shoulder. Neither knew what they could do to help, other than offer to carry her school books but she was not going to like that one bit. Around 9o'clock that night Jade finally emerged from her room. Tori was sat in the living room reading a book when the pregnant girl approached her.
'Hey' Tori smiled surprised. She was beginning to worry that Jade wouldn't come out of her room all night.
'Could you paint my toenails?' Jade rushed her words out uncomfortably 'I can't reach them.'
'Sure' Tori said trying not to make a big deal out of it. It was only a small thing but Tori knew how much Jade hated asking for help so it was a big step. Jade sighed handing over a small bottle of black nail polish and some other nail stuff before sitting down the other end of the couch. Tori placed a cushion on her lap and patted it indicating for Jade to pull her feet up on to it.
'Do you want me to file them?' Tori asked trying to spark a conversation, but the brunette didn't answer, just spaced out. Tori began filing, deciding that Jade needed a bit of TLC right now. They were silent the whole time as Tori carefully painted each of the goths toenails. She was just beginning the top coat when Jades phone rang.
'Hey' Jade answered her phone. The silence in the room meant Tori could just about make out that it was Beck who had called.
'How are you?' Beck asked brightly.
'I'm fine' Jade answered, but her voice cracked as soon as the lie left her lips. Tori stopped what she was doing and looked up just as couple of tears splashed down onto Jades pale cheeks. Tori hastily looked away and continued painting Jades toenails. This was nothing like the dramatic crying Tori was used to seeing from Jade. It was quiet and vulnerable and somehow that was worse. Everything was quiet for a while as Jade just listened to Beck talk about work.
'You sure you're ok?' Beck asked Jade warily, noticing how quiet she was being.
'Yeah' Jade whispered into the phone, tears choking up her throat
'I miss you so much babe' Beck said softly, not quite believing her.
'Miss you too' Jade replied, another teardrop rolling down her cheek. The phone call only lasted a couple more minutes as Beck was called back to set. He ended the call and Jade closed her eyes desperately trying to stop the flow of tears.
Placing the nail polish on the coffee table, Tori pushed Jades legs off her lap and put her arms around her gently, careful not to press on her shoulder.
'It's gonna be ok' Tori said sensitively, her heart going out to her. Jade wailed weakly, covering her eyes with her hands and Tori wondered if she should have guessed this would happen after everything that happened recently.
'I need him back now Tor' Jade whispered as more and more pent up tears escaped her blue eyes.
'Not long now' Tori said softly, stroking her hair as she continued to cry. Jade was a complete mess of tears in her arms, obviously letting something out that had been building up for a while. Tori knew she'd been missing Beck, but maybe she hadn't paid attention to how much. She also might have been a little preoccupied with her own boyfriend to spot that Jade was reaching breaking point.
Suddenly the baby decided it was her turn for some attention and kicked hard twice. Tori pulled away as Jade rubbed circles on her stomach trying to soothe her baby daughter.
'Can I?' Tori asked. Jade nodded, moving her hand from her stomach allowing Tori's to replace it. Tori bent down so that her face was close to Jades stomach.
'Hey cheeky, why are you kicking Mummy?' Tori asked in a cute, baby voice. Jade stopped crying and looked down at Tori confused.
'Aww you don't like it when Mummy's sad' Tori cooed.
'Vega, what are you doing?' Jade asked in a croaky voice, but Tori ignored her just talking to her stomach.
'What was that? You think Mummy deserves chocolate cake? Well if you say so.' Tori grinned, jumping up from the sofa and heading directly to the kitchen, she knew when she went to the shops before buying that chocolate cake on impulse must have been for a reason. Whilst Tori was gone Jade had time to calm herself down, taking a couple of deep breaths and wiping her eyes. She looked a little more herself by the time Tori came back with two bowls of chocolate cake.
'You're dumb' Jade informed her, accepting one of the bowls.
'It made you smile though' Tori pointed out. Jade looked down at the bowl of chocolate cake and gave a small smile as Tori sat down next to her. 'You okay?'
'Not really' Jade replied honestly.
'What can I do to help?' Tori asked sadly.
'Just..' Jade sighed looking down at the chocolate cake. Was there actually anything that could make her feel better? Her heart ached for Beck. She needed Beck. She needed him more than she'd ever needed him before. But she couldn't have him for three whole weeks. Jade looked up and her eyes met Tori's concerned ones. 'Just distract me.'
