Her arms slipped silently around his middle as he stood in the ruins if their former base, gazing at the sky while tendrils of dawn peeked over the horizon.
"Don't go," she mumbled into the armor plating, as though she might convince the scarab that inhabited his body to change his resolve. Jaime brought his hand up to cover both of hers.
"I've got to, Cass. I'm the only one that can." He tilted his head further back until it touched hers.
He felt her face shift, cheek pressed against the metallic scarab. Her grip tightened. "I just...I can't...Jaime, you gotta come back," Cassie pleaded, her voice wavering with the tears she was trying to hold back. "I'll go out of my mind I swear! I won't be able to handle it if-"
Jaime spun her around and pulled her tight to his chest, completely armoring down so he could feel her real and alive in his arms. "Cassie, I always come back to you," he murmured, running his fingers through her windswept hair, holding her even closer as sobs shuddered through her shoulders.
She pulled back to stare into his eyes, daring them to contradict his statement.
"Always?" It came out more as a demand than a question.
"Always," he promised, kissing her forehead. And she believed him. Because his dark brown eyes never told her anything but the truth.
