Chapter 14
Viper
I stood in a dark room, my vision completely black. "Hello?" I called out. "Can anyone hear me? Rosalene? Lia? Someone?"
No answer.
Glancing around at my surroundings, I realized I was in some sort of void. "So you live..." I turned around to face the direction the voice came from. "I wasn't sure if you'd be strong enough to live through the binding. Looks like I was wrong."
"Binding?"
"Yes." a figure emerged from the darkness, standing in front of me. I found myself staring at an exact copy of...me.
"What are you?"
"You." I... he... it replied. "At least, I am now." I was silent. "I know you can already feel it. That fire growing inside of you. The unquenchable thirst to kill. The rage."
"You're wrong."
"Maybe. But eventually, you won't be able to resist. You and I are one." he approached me, placing his hand on my shoulder. Looking into his eyes, they weren't my own. They looked...reptilian. "Come to me when you seek my power."
He turned into a cloud of smoke, the smoke then entering my body. "Don't keep me waiting...hero."
Sitting up, I threw the covers off of me, my breathing quick and heavy. With each breath, I felt a slight sting from heat. "Viper!" Rosalene squealed before wrapping herself around me. "You're okay! Thank god!"
Looking down, I felt myself relax, knowing Rosalene had been by my side. "Of course I'm okay." I smiled, returning the embrace.
"The doctors weren't sure if you'd make it." she said, burying her face in my chest. "They didn't know what was wrong with you, but your temperature was beyond hot. They said they were surprised your brain hadn't been fried."
"It was that bad?"
"Yes!" I felt her tears dampen my shirt a bit. "They had to use ice to force your temperature down. You were unconscious for a whole week!"
"A week?" I repeated. "Was there anything else wrong with me?" I asked her.
"They found this." she gently took my right arm into her hands. Looking down, I noticed most of my body was wrapped in bandages. "Look." Rosalene gently rolled up my sleeve, revealing a circular scar with a burn mark on the underside of my arm. "Nobody knows what it is."
"It's definitely strange."
Suddenly, the door to the room opened as a handmaiden walked in. "You're awake." she said surprised before shaking her head. "The King and Queen had asked we give this to you." she walked over and handed me a letter.
"Thanks." unfolding it, I began to read.
"What's it say?" Rosalene asked.
Finishing the letter, I got up from the bed with a slight wince. "It's ready."
"What's ready?"
"My surprise for you." I told her. Grabbing my shirt, pants and shoes, I put them on. Heading for the door, I grabbed my cloak off the coat rack, wrapping it around myself before opening the door. "Come on."
"You shouldn't be standing!" Rosalene rushed over to me.
"Why not? I feel fine...mostly."
She pouted, clearly a bit annoyed. "Fine. If you're sure you're okay."
"Good."
A few minutes later
I had my hands covering Rosalene's eyes. "Why can't I just see it?" she asked.
"You will." I told her. "In just a few more steps." turning down the alley, I stopped in front of her house. Pulling my hands away, I smiled as Rosalene gasped.
"I-It's my...it's my home!" she covered her mouth. "Jack, you didn't-!"
"Of course I did." I replied. "Is it like how you remembered?"
"It looks just like it did when I was a kid." she rushed to the door and opened it, heading inside. Following her, I watched as she ran from room to room. "The rooms are all the same! The only thing that's different is the furniture placement."
"So, you like i-" I was cut off as Rosalene tackled me to the ground, her lips pressing against mine.
"I love it!" she smiled. "And I love you, too!"
Sayori
Finally arriving at the capital, I could hardly believe it took us so long to walk here. Out of breath, I placed a hand on my stomach. "Can we find a place to rest?" I asked.
The others glanced at each other. "You two look for Jack while I take Sayori someplace to sit." Monika told Yuri and Natsuki. "We'll be in an Inn."
"Okay." Yuri nodded. "We'll be back in a few hours. Hopefully Jack will be with us."
"Come on, Sayori." Monika placed her arm around me and we started searching for an Inn.
Viper
Rosalene pushed me onto the bed, her lips pushed against mine. "What's gotten into you?" I asked once we pulled away.
"What?" she smirked. "I can't give you a gift in return?"
"I didn't mean it in a bad way." I said, pulling her close. "I like this side of you."
"Well then, let me show you a few more parts of me you might enjoy." she pulled her shirt over her head, tossing it to the ground.
She seemed a lot more direct than the last time we did this. And I was loving it.
