Chapter 14
Training Richard to use his powers wasn't going as planned. As in, it wasn't going at all. After his twenty-second failing attempt to move a shadow to his side, we were both getting frustrated. The shadow didn't budge from the crevice, no matter how much concentration he put into doing so. I tried giving him advice about relaxing and thought processes, but it all seems to be useless. Finally, he stood abruptly. He sighed fiercely and scrubbed his face. I watched his back as he turned away from me in frustration. I sighed silently through my nose, disappointed at seeing him so irritated. Maybe it's my fault. Maybe I'm not the teacher he needs right now. Actually, I know I'm not the teacher he needs. I'm trying. But that's not good enough. I know this. I padded towards my discouraged boy. As I neared him, I reached out my hand for my fingers to touch his back but hesitated the last second. The self-conscious thirteen-year-old girl spoke up inside me. Would he want you touching him? I shook her out of my head. I hate her so much! All she ever does is hold me back. I placed my whole hand on his back to prove her wrong. His skin burned beneath my palm. He must have really been concentrating.
I stood beside him and let him calm himself for a moment, just standing there. "Frustration won't help you. Ever." I told him. "Just breathe and-" He stepped away from my touch and walked towards the opening leading towards the area where the team hung out. I lowered my hand, feeling like I had just been slapped. I curled my empty hand into a fist and tried to shut out the crying coming from the self-conscious girl who always held me back. I followed after him.
He was sitting on the couch, holding his head in his hands. I crossed in front of him and as soon as I sat, he spoke. "Isn't there someone who knows what they're doing?" He whispered, without looking at me. I took a deep breath without answering. I didn't really need to, he was ranting at this point. "You said something about siblings? Brothers and sisters who can do what I can do? I know you're trying and all, but I need this and-"
"No." I cut him off. I knew he would ask about his siblings. I didn't want to have this conversation. He looked pained, so I didn't look at him. I was a coward in that moment. "Why? I know my mother told you not to bring me to camp, but that doesn't mean you can't bring camp to me! I know you want to teach me but you don't know how, and-"
"No!" My hand flew out, catching his and holding it. My other hand shook slightly with unwanted memories as it brushed escaped hair behind my ear. "Richard, please." I whispered, unable to meet his gaze, so I stared in front of me. He placed his hand on top of mine, and began to pry it off of his. I didn't realize I had been crushing it. "Eli?" He asked, concern colouring his words. He was starting to understand that something wasn't right. I didn't look at him. I couldn't, wouldn't, didn't, wasn't going to look at him.
"Eli!" His voice grew louder. He grabbed my shoulders and forced me to look him in the eye. I felt as if he could see my soul. I tried to look away but he grabbed my face, his fingers hot from recent concentration and perhaps even adrenaline. I met his glorious eyes as he asked, "What happened to my family?" But how do you do it?
How do you tell someone that they're family might be dead?
