XIV - Sisters

Looking back, Karin thinks that she should have seen this coming.

All the signs were there, and yet, she remained oblivious to the fact that her sister was a very, very meddlesome person.

The first time Ichi-nii brought home the girl should have been a flashing neon arrow to the true nature of her twin. The girl (Rukia, that was her name) was very much petite, with raven hair, flashing amethyst eyes, and a sharp tongue. Yuzu's eyes had flashed up the moment Rukia entered the Kurosaki household, a knowing smirk appearing on her face. The more often the raven-haired girl came by, the more obvious it became that Yuzu was very interested in the relationship her brother had with this mysterious woman.

Karin realizes now that the incident where Ichi-nii and Rukia accidentally found themselves in a locked room, where only moments later the rustling of clothes and moans and strange thumping noises could be heard from was likely planned by none other than Yuzu. Sweet, innocent Yuzu.

Really, the signs were all there. It was a miracle that it took Karin this long to understand what her sister was truly like.

The first time Hitsugaya Toushiro comes to the Kurosaki household is for a school project.

The teacher had picked the pairs for the upcoming history assignment, and Karin is lucky enough to have been paired with the top student in her class. The snowy-haired genius shrugs when Karin approaches him to invite him over so they can organize and coordinate their research.

The two decide to head over to the library first to see if they can pick up any other books concerning the topic of the Cold War, and by the time they arrive to Karin's home, Yuzu is already cooking up dinner.

"Yuzu, I'm back," Karin calls lazily as she slips off her shoes. "I'm heading up to my room, yeah?"

Yuzu sticks her head out the doorframe of the kitchen, hazel eyes immediately lighting up as they land on the handsome face of Hitsugaya. "If you need anything, I'm sure there are some condoms in Ichi-nii's drawer!" she pipes up before disappearing back into the kitchen.

Karin flushes dark red, and angrily yells at her twin. "Yuzu! This is for a school project!" she cries out, stressing the last two words.

Embarrassed, she quickly grabs the hand of an equally red Hitsugaya and tugs him up the stairs and into the relative safety and privacy of her bedroom (which she doesn't share with Yuzu anymore, thankfully).

"Sorry about that. Yuzu's not usually like this," Karin tries to explain, an awkward grin tugging at her lips.

"It's fine," Hitsugaya mumbles, white bangs covering his emerald eyes. Karin thinks that he is still blushing, but decides not to comment on it. "Come on, let's start on the project."

The two spend the next two hours going over multiple reports and books, analyzing the various causes and impacts the Cold War had on the global community. It's Yuzu's sudden voice that makes them snap their heads up from the books they're hunched over, eyes quickly glancing at the clock on the wall.

"Ah, it's already 7. Want to stay for dinner?" Karin offers, bookmarking the page she's on before closing the book.

Hitsugaya ponders this for a bit, before slowly nodding. "Alright. Thanks for your hospitality," he says politely.

The two head downstairs to a dinner table set with some bowls of rice, fried pork and cooked vegetables. Karin takes her usual seat and indicates for Hitsugaya to sit down too.

"Do you two usually eat alone?" Hitsugaya asks as he picks up some chopsticks.

"No, Otou-san usually eats with us, but he's working a night shift today," Yuzu explains. "Ichi-nii used to eat with us all the time too, but he's at university now."

Hitsugaya notices that she doesn't mention anything about their mother and raises a snowy eyebrow, ready to ask.

"Our mother's dead," Karin said, cutting him off before he even has the chance to question them. "She died when we were 5."

"I'm sorry," Hitsugaya says quietly, feeling somewhat guilty for treading into seemingly dangerous waters.

"Don't worry about it," she replies with a smile.

The second time Hitsugaya comes over is to give Karin the work she's missing because of her fever.

Yuzu is carrying some porridge up to her sister's room when the doorbell rings. She hurriedly sets the tray down on Karin's bedside drawer before rushing downstairs to open the door. A delighted grin appears on Yuzu's feminine face when she sees who it is; the bright eyes of Hitsugaya Toushiro stare back at her warily.

"Hitsugaya-kun! It's been three weeks, hasn't it? Please come in," she smiles warmly, gesturing for him to enter.

"I don't mean to intrude. Here," he says, handing a pile of papers to Yuzu. "It's Kurosaki's classwork."

It's at this moment when Karin decides to make an appearance, stumbling down the stairs in an attempt to see the owner of the voice that had drifted into her room. "Hitsugaya, what are you doing here?" she asks, eyes still glazed over from her fever.

"Kurosaki," he says, eyes widening and face colouring ever slightly. "You don't look well. Go back to sleep," he says softly, concern shining in his eyes.

"Why did you come? You could've just given my work to Yuzu at school," Karin says, stubbornly ignoring his previous words. "I know you two have no classes together, but it's still gotta be easier to find her in the halls instead of coming all the way over to my house."

Yuzu giggles into her hands. "Isn't it obvious, Karin-chan? He wanted to see you!"

The tips of Hitsugaya's ears redden and he ducks his head down in an attempt to hide his blush. "Go back to bed," he simply repeats from before.

"Yes, yes, go back to your bed Karin-chan!" Yuzu says. "You too Hitsugaya-kun, I'm sure you want to go up there with her," she continues as she tries to drag Hitsugaya inside.

Hitsugaya quickly sidesteps Yuzu, before backing out the door. "I-I'm busy. Get better Kurosaki," he stammers before heading off into the black night.

"Yuzu! You have to stop doing that!"

Hitsugaya starts coming more and more often. At first, they have excuses like math tutoring sessions, or another history assignment, but soon they start to run out. They all know that he's coming over for reasons that are very much non-academic, and very much raven hair and grey eyes.

It's about two months after their initial history project when Yuzu realizes that they're making significant progress.

"Ha, what was that about beating me, Toush?"

"Just you watch Karin, I'll win the next battle."

(It was just like her twin sister to play video games with a guy, Yuzu thinks.)

But what really catches her attention is that Karin is now addressing Hitsugaya with a nickname, and the seemingly strict Hitsugaya is calling her by her first name.

Yuzu smiles.

Karin feels dread settling in the bottom of her stomach when Hitsugaya kisses her for the first time.

It isn't that she doesn't like him; on the contrary, she thinks that there is no other person who she would rather share her first kiss with. Butterflies are dancing in her stomach and she feels lightheaded, euphoria filling her lungs as his soft lips caress her own.

But the dread sits there like a stone, and Karin knows it's because it won't be long before Yuzu finds out. And then all hell will break loose.

The summer arrives and Yuzu notes with suspicion that Hitsugaya is literally coming to their house every single day after school.

On the days that she walks home with the two, she is met with disappointment that they never hold hands or even brush arms. Nonetheless, she is determined to get them together.

"Karin-chan, Hitsugaya-kun, would you two help me out with some chores please?" she asks as the three enter the Kurosaki house. "I have a ton of homework for tomorrow, so could you please go into Ichi-nii's room and help clean out some boxes? I'll need those in the kitchen."

The two shrug and agree, and Yuzu cheers silently.

"Thanks a bunch!" she says as they enter Ichi-nii's room. Stealthily, Yuzu closes the door shut and with a click!, the door is locked. (It's times like these that Yuzu is glad that some of the rooms in this house can only be unlocked from the outside).

Yuzu rushes away before her sister can start questioning her about what just happened, and heads to the kitchen with a gigantic grin on her face.

Inside the room, Karin sighs.

"She must've done the exact same thing with Ichi-nii and Rukia," she says as she slides to the ground. "Sorry Toushiro, I didn't actually expect her to do this."

Hitsugaya grins at her, emerald eyes flashing. "What are you apologizing for? There are worse things than being stuck in a room with a girl who I have regular make-out sessions with."

Karin grins back, grey eyes twinkling. "We should try and be quiet. I don't want to give Yuzu the satisfaction of thinking she got us together."

Hitsugaya nods as his hands reach toward Karin to pull her closer. He pulls her flush against his own body, and in moments, the two are lying entangled on the ground.

It's hours later when Yuzu finally heads back upstairs. Although there was an initial thump of what she thinks were bodies falling onto the floor, there were no sounds after that. Defeated, Yuzu proceeds to open the door, dismayed to find the two innocently reading books on the ground.

"Hey Yuzu. I don't know if it was an accident, but the door got locked. The boxes are over there," Karin says, not looking up from her book.

Yuzu sighs.

Yuzu cannot believe her eyes when she walks in on Karin and Hitsugaya making out.

The two are on the kitchen counter, hands at each others' hair and waists. Yuzu had been late because she had to go buy groceries, so Karin and Hitsugaya had gone home first.

This is definitely not what Yuzu had expected to see.

"You two... are together?"

Bodies freeze as they turn towards Yuzu's voice, before immediately moving far, far away from each other.

"Y-Yuzu. Hey," Karin says as she tries to arrange her hair and clothing into something presentable.

Awkward moments of silence pass before Yuzu squeals loudly and clasps Hitsugaya's hands.

"I knew you two would get together! Make sure you take good care of Karin-chan, ok Hitsugaya-kun? There are condoms in Ichi-nii's drawers still, so please use them. I'll leave you two then! I just realized that I need to go to the library!"

Before either Karin or Hitsugaya could respond, Yuzu dumps the groceries on the floor, picks up her bag, and dashes out the door.

"I'm expecting details later, Karin-chan!"

"Well, it's not so bad, is it?" Hitsugaya mumbles against her ear. "She would have found out sooner or later."

Karin shrugs. "I suppose so. At least that wasn't as bad as when your sister found us in her bed."

Hitsugaya blushes at the memory. "Momo had been bugging me about you for weeks at that point. Don't even get me started on Matsumoto."

"Your busty cousin? That's hilarious."

Karin thinks that maybe it's not so bad. Yuzu might be meddlesome (and quite perverted) but at least she knows that she supports them. Ichi-nii on the other hand would likely threaten to kill Hitsugaya on the spot when he found out about their relationship.

But, Karin thinks, that's a story for another time.

I hope you guys enjoy! I ended up not participating in HitsuKarin Week 2014 unfortunately, but please do continue to look forward to future instalments anyway. Who knows, I might end up using one of the prompts.

Anyway, I would absolutely adore you if you reviewed, so please and thank you!
